This book aims to demonstrate how scholars in recent times have been utilizing egodocuments from various angles and providing an opening for the multivocality of the sources to be fully appreciated. The first part of the book is concerned with the significance of egodocuments, both for the individual him/herself who creates such documents, and also for the other, who receives them. The author approaches the subject on the basis of his own personal experience, and goes on to discuss the importance of such documents for the academic world, emphasizing more general questions and issues within the fields of historiography, philosophy of history, microhistory, and memory studies. The second part of the book is based upon a photographic collection – an archive – that belonged to the author's grandfather, who over decades accumulated photographs of vagabonds and outsiders. This part seeks to explore what kind of knowledge can be applied when a single source – an archive, document, letter, illustration, etc. – is examined, and whether the knowledge derived may not be quite as good in its own context as in the broader perspective.

The Remaking of Archival Values posits that archival theory and practice are fields in flux, and that recent critical archival discourse that addresses neoliberalism, racism, and the legacies of colonialism and patriarchy represents a disruption not only to established principles but also to the values that underpin them.Using critical discourse analysis and comparing theory and practice from the UK and the Anglophone world, Hoyle explores the challenges faced by scholars, institutions, organisations, and practitioners in embedding new values. She demonstrates how persistent underlying discursive structures about archives have manifested from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Qualitative and participatory research in the UK shows how conceptions of archival value arise, are expressed, and become authorised in practice at international, national, and local levels. Doch das ist bloss das vorläufige Ende eines vielschichtigen historischen Prozesses. Basierend auf einer historischen Ethnografie des Fotoarchivs des Schweizer Ringier-Verlags geraten Akteure, archivarische Praktiken und institutionelle Logiken unter die Lupe. Sie geben den mannigfaltigen Digitalisierungsprozessen von Fotografien seit den 1970er-Jahren Kontur. Dabei wird in verschiedenen historisch-medialen Konstellationen deutlich, wie und mit welchen Beweggründen Bilder an Geschichte geknüpft worden sind. Der Fall Ringier ermöglicht so zugleich eine praxeologische Reflexion über das Verhältnis von Fotografie, Archiv und Geschichte.

Este libro indaga sobre el papel de los archivos, las bibliotecas y los museos en la producción, conservación y transmisión de la memoria y los dispositivos culturales y comunicativos del recuerdo. Se pregunta además por los lenguajes, las narrativas, los actores, los lugares físicos y simbólicos, las instituciones, las tradiciones y las formaciones sociales que constituyen parte del repertorio de experiencias que configuran el entramado documental que le da sustento a la memoria. Así mismo, busca ampliar las perspectivas de análisis sobre el campo de los archivos de Derechos Humanos, las historias de vida, los procesos sociales de resistencia política, las memorias subterráneas que están en tensión con los discursos dominantes, las manifestaciones estéticas, los movimientos sociales y todas aquellas expresiones que, derivadas de la experiencia, nos permiten acercarnos, cada vez más, a la comprensión de las sociedades en las que vivimos.

Cuando una historiadora o un historiador publica una obra, tendemos a imaginarla como resultado de operaciones analíticas que incluyen la lectura de bibliografía, la puesta a prueba de avances parciales en congresos de expertos (que permiten refinar las hipótesis o el método) y laboriosos procesos de escritura y reescritura. Pero también podemos preguntarnos por una zona de su oficio que el libro terminado no suele dejar a la vista: los meses (o años) pasados en bibliotecas, hemerotecas, reparticiones públicas que guardan fondos documentales, materiales en variable estado de conservación que hablan los lenguajes del pasado. Esa tarea artesanal está hecha de tanteos y aproximaciones (¿dónde conseguir los números que faltan de ese magazine policial?, ¿y si finalmente hay que comprarlos por Mercado Libre?), imprescindibles estrategias de acceso (¿cómo ganarse el favor del archivero para que el material siga ahí, a mano, mañana?), padecimientos cotidianos (¿y si esa colección por la que tanto se luchó permanece'muda'y resulta que se perdió un tiempo precioso?, ¿podremos descifrar los trazos casi ilegibles en esas cartas que parecían decisivas?). Estas páginas registran –entre la crónica, el ensayo y el diario personal– una experiencia hecha de rutinas, pequeñas o grandes frustraciones y peripecias deliciosas, que a veces llevan a momentos de'iluminación súbita', como los llama Carlo Ginzburg. Con humor, con destreza de narradora que comenta sólo lo que conoce muy a fondo, Lila Caimari capta esa etapa de la investigación en que'la'obra no existe todavía, muchos rumbos son posibles y todo parece inestable. As sites of documentary preservation rooted in various national and social contexts, artifacts of culture, and places of uncovering, archives provide tangible evidence of memory for individuals, communities, and states, as well as defining memory institutionally within prevailing political systems and cultural norms. By assigning the prerogatives of record keeper to the archivist, whose acquisition policies, finding aids, and various institutionalized predilections mediate between scholarship and information, archives produce knowledge, legitimize political systems, and construct identities. Far from being mere repositories of data, archives actually embody the fragments of culture that endure as signifiers of who we are, and why. The essays in Archives, Documentation, and Institutions of Social Memory conceive of archives not simply as historical repositories but as a complex of structures, processes, and epistemologies situated at a critical point of the intersection between scholarship, cultural practices, politics, and technologies.
