Telephus, son of Heracles and king of Mysia, was a key figure in the Trojan War. Both enemy and ally of the Achaeans, he fought against them, was wounded and then cured by Achilles, and led Agamemnon's army to Troy. This book is the first comprehensive study on his myth. It investigates fragmentary artefacts and texts, offers new readings and interpretations, and frames the evidence in its socio-political, historical, and cultural contexts. What results is a view of an ever-changing myth embedded in diverse cultural milieux, a product and a catalyst of cross-cultural exchanges, and an instrument of soft power. After assessing the sources, this book provides a contextual history of the myth, from the seventh to the first centuries BC, paying particular attention to cultural contacts in the context of migratory movements and consequent hybridisation of different social and cultural systems; repurposing and remodelling of cultural products to follow specific agendas; cultural policy and propaganda enforced through mass media and used as soft power; and more besides. All texts are translated and thus fully accessible to readers interested in myth, migration studies, cross-cultural studies, cultural history, and literary criticism.

Die Kibyratis im südwestlichen Kleinasien und die angrenzenden Gebiete Pisidiens sind für die Altertumswissenschaft in vielerlei Hinsicht interessant und ergiebig. Nachdem sich österreichische Forscher bereits um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert dieser Region widmeten, erbrachte in jüngster Zeit eine über zwei Jahrzehnte durchgeführte archäologisch-historische Untersuchung neue Ergebnisse. Eine große Zahl der im Rahmen dieser Forschungsreisen gefundenen Inschriften, vor allem aus der römischen Kaiserzeit, sind der Gegenstand des Bandes. Sie werden durch bisher unveröffentlichte Texte aus dem Archiv der ehemaligen „Kleinasiatischen Kommission'der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien ergänzt, übersetzt und ausführlich kommentiert. Dabei finden Fragen der historischen Geographie, der Onomastik, der Prosopographie, der antiken Religionen und der Wirtschaft im ländlichen Raum die ihnen gebührende Beachtung, deren Untersuchung vor allem auf den Gebieten der Onomastik und der Wirtschaft neue Erkenntnisse bringt.

The volume continues the publication of The Rendel Harris Papyri (vol. I, 1936; vol. II, 1985), offering editions, with translations and interpretations, of eighty-one Greek papyri. Three are literary or subliterary, the others documentary. With a few exceptions, the texts included are from Oxyrhynchus. They range in date from the early first to the late seventh/early eighth century, but the majority come from late antiquity, with about twenty of them dating from the fifth century.

Die Arbeit macht zum ersten Mal die ganze Breite der frühen Sophoklesrezeption fassbar: Ein großes Spektrum an Gattungen und Autoren bezieht sich bereits zu seinen Lebzeiten, aber auch im weiteren Verlauf der Antike auf diesen athenischen Tragödiendichter. Andere Texte setzen sich mit Sophokles'Person und mit seinem Werk auf vielfältige Weise auseinander, und in Sophokles'früher Rezeptionsphase werden auch eine große Anzahl seiner Dramen über die sieben später kanonischen Tragödien hinaus aufgegriffen und geschätzt. Das umfangreiche Corpus der erhaltenen Sophoklesrezeptionen analysiert die Arbeit eingehend und deutet sie anhand einschlägiger Beispiele vor allem aus dem 5. und 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. aus. Darüber hinaus zeigt Hannah Brandenburg, dass viele bis heute weit verbreitete Ansichten über Sophokles und seine Stücke schon von seinen Zeitgenossen geprägt wurden und sich in den folgenden Jahrhunderten verfestigten, darunter auch die Vorstellung, Sophokles sei der beste Tragödiendichter.

This is a Festschrift offered by friends and colleagues to papyrologist and ancient historian Peter van Minnen. The volume contains the edition or re-edition of 52 papyri and ostraca, dating from between the third century BCE and the eighth century CE. Their subjects vary from Demosthenes to the delivery of camels in early Islamic Egypt, and their provenances stretch from the Eastern to the Western Desert, and from the Egyptian Nile valley to Qasr Ibrim in northern Nubia. All texts are published with transcription, translation, commentary and colour photographs. In addition, there are five studies, reflecting the honorand's wide-ranging interests.

In this book Professor Pritchett offers five original essays under the titles: Thucydides'Pentekontaetia; Thucydides 1.61.3-5; Diodoros'Pentekontaetia; The Solar Year of Thucydides; Aetiology sans Topography. The initial lengthy essay focuses on seven crux passages in which Thucydides in Book 1 describes the growth of Athenian power, maintaining against recent critics that they are presented in chronological order. The study combines a review of the manuscript tradition with regard to corruptions in toponyms and numerals and a personal autopsy of the ancient sites. In a separate essay, Pritchett adduces new arguments in defense of Thucydides'seasonal chronological scheme. In the last essay, he takes sharp issue with a recent publication which attempts to attribute the origin of the ancient accounts of the Messenian wars and the battles of Hysiai, Thyreatis, and Phigaleia to legends evolved at festivals.

The Seleukid kingdom was one of the greatest states of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to India; it is also one of the least known. This reference work lists all the people whose names are known who lived in that kingdom, classifying them into rulers, officials and subjects, and in each case noting their activity. In addition all the foreigners whose lives affected the Seleukid state are listed.The Gazetteer lists the places which were included in the kingdom, classified as regions, including provinces and peoples, or settlements, whether cities or villages, with a description of their place in its history. In addition the institutions of the kingdom, the social and political glue which made it work, are noted and briefly described.

Professor Pritchett, questioning the patron-izing and dismissive tone which a group of scholars has reserved for Herodotos, devotes his attention to four works of the past decade which have to do with Herodotos'source-citations, his epigraphical listings, his record for Scythia, and the treatment of the topography of Thermopylai by a geomorphological survey team, as well as some miscellaneous writings. His procedure is to take up passage by passage the examples where Herodotos has been charged with falsification in an effort to show that there exists in the literature evidence which mutes the allegations. He concludes with sections on a general appraisal of Herodotos by specialists and a discussion of Herodotos'audience. The monograph is of general interest to students of Greek historiography. There is an index of the Herodotean passages which are scrutinized.

Hartmut Leppin unternimmt den Versuch, die Geschichte des griechischen Wortes parrhesía, oft als Freimut übersetzt, von seinem Beginn in der attischen Demokratie bis zur christlichen Spätantike zu verfolgen. Er berücksichtigt dabei auch nicht-klassische Sprachen wie Syrisch, Koptisch und Hebräisch, um die intellektuelle Verflechtung in der antiken Mittelmeerwelt zu verdeutlichen. Es zeigt sich, dass dem Wort ein großer Geltungsanspruch innewohnte, dass dieser sich aber in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten höchst unterschiedlich ausnahm. Daher werden verschiedene Adressaten betrachtet: Mitbürger, Vertraute, Mächtige und Gott. In Auseinandersetzung mit der modernen Forschung, die stark von Michel Foucault beeinflusst ist, macht Hartmut Leppin deutlich, dass die Parrhesie zwar eine kritische Tonlage wählte, aber in einem hohen Maße dazu beitrug, das jene, die sich ihrer bedienten ihr Gesicht wahren konnten.

Diodoros of Sicily's book XIX is the main source for the history of the Diadochoi, Alexander the Great's Successors, from 317 to 311 BCE. This book provides an updated view of our knowledge about Phrygian, an Indo-European language attested to have been spoken in Anatolia between the 8th century BC and the Roman Imperial period. This multidisciplinary study takes a fresh look at Judean history and biblical literature in the late fourth and third centuries BCE. Historians have shed new light on the nature of the Hellenistic empires and the relationship between the central power and local entities in ancient imperial settings, and the redating of several biblical texts to the third century BCE challenges the traditional periodization of Judean history.Bringing together Hellenistic history, the archaeology of Judea, and biblical studies, this volume appraises the early Hellenistic period anew as a time of great transition and change and situates Judea within its broader regional and transregional imperial contexts.

Holy Island is a small island just off the west coast of Anglesey, North Wales, which is rich in archaeology of all periods. Between 2006 and 2010, archaeological excavations in advance of a major Welsh Government development site, Parc Cybi, enabled extensive study of the island's past. Over 20 hectares were investigated, revealing a busy and complex archaeological landscape, which could be seen evolving from the Mesolithic period through to the present day. Major sites discovered include an Early Neolithic timber hall aligned on an adjacent chambered tomb and an Iron Age settlement, the development of which is traced by extensive dating and Bayesian analysis. A Bronze Age ceremonial complex, along with the Neolithic tomb, defined the cultural landscape for subsequent periods. A long cist cemetery of a type common on Anglesey proved, uncommonly, to be late Roman in date, while elusive Early Medieval settlement was indicated by corn dryers. This wealth of new information has revolutionised our understanding of how people have lived in, and transformed, the landscape of Holy Island. Many of the sites are also significant in a broader Welsh context and inform the understanding of similar sites across Britain and Ireland.

Cirene, unica colonia greca d'Africa, fu una metropoli di grandi dimensioni e di spiccata monumentalità, soprattutto a partire all'età ellenistica. Dalla sua riscoperta archeologica all'inizio del XX secolo, è stata oggetto di una serie di studi da parte di numerosi ricercatori, che hanno permesso di avere un'immagine ampia e articolata della città e della sua storia. Un settore di ricerca che ancora non era stato approfondito riguarda il tema della gestione idrica, da intendere come analisi dei processi e dei mezzi che permettevano alla città di usufruire dell'acqua meteorica e di falda - dunque i sistemi di approvvigionamento e di smaltimento idrico -, ma anche come la valutazione del ruolo che l'acqua assumeva all'interno dei diversi contesti spaziali (per esempio nei santuari). Il volume è suddiviso in due sezioni inerenti al ciclo dell'acqua nell'area urbana ed extra urbana, all'interno delle quali si è scelto di adottare una divisione in capitoli e sottocapitoli, in relazione alle linee topografiche che contraddistinguono la storia dell'urbanistica del sito. Tutte le strutture in qualche modo legate con l'acqua sono state mappate, descritte e documentate; quando possibile, in riferimento a condotti e ambienti ipogei, è stata effettuata anche un'indagine diretta all'interno delle strutture. Il lavoro rappresenta una sintesi organica del materiale edito in materia per il sito di Cirene e per le principali città della Cirenaica (in appendice), che si avvale anche di bibliografia di difficile reperibilità e di archivio. A questo materiale si integrano i dati ottenuti negli ultimi anni, risultato di indagini autoptiche. Obiettivo finale è quello di fornire un quadro diacronico inerente al ciclo dell'acqua a Cirene, presentando tutta la documentazione archeologica ed epigrafica esistente, funzionale al tema della ricerca. Cyrene, the only Greek colony in Africa, was a metropolis of great size and great monumentality, especially from the Hellenistic age onwards. One topic of research that had not yet been studied in depth concerns the theme of water management, to be understood as an analysis of the processes and means that allowed the city to use rainwater and groundwater - i.e. water supply and disposal systems - but also as the evaluation of the role that water took on within the different spatial contexts (for example in sanctuaries). The work represents an organic synthesis of the material published on the subject for the site of Cyrene and for the main cities of Cyrenaica, which also makes use of archive documents and bibliography of difficult access. To this material are integrated the data obtained of in recent year's surveys. The final objective is to provide a diachronic picture inherent to the water cycle in Cyrene, presenting all the existing archaeological and epigraphic documentation, functional to the theme of the research

John Chrysostom remains, along with Augustine, one of the most prolific witnesses to the world of late antiquity. As priest of Antioch and bishop of Constantinople, he earned his reputation as an extraordinary preacher.In this first unified study of emotions in Chrysostom's writings, Blake Leyerle examines the fourth-century preacher's understanding of anger, grief, and fear. These difficult emotions, she argues, were central to Chrysostom's program of ethical formation and were taught primarily through narrative means. In recounting the tales of scripture, Chrysostom consistently draws attention to the emotional tenor of these stories, highlighting biblical characters'moods, discussing their rational underpinnings, and tracing the outcomes of their reactions. The edition collects and presents all papyri and ostraca from the Ptolemaic period, connected to Jews and Judaism, published since 1957. It is a follow-up to the Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum (= CPJ) of the 1950s and 60s, edited by Victor Tcherikover, which had consisted of three volumes – I devoted to the Ptolemaic period; II to the Early Roman period (until 117 CE); and III to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. The present book, CPJ vol. IV, is the first in a new trilogy, and is devoted to the Ptolemaic period. The present and upcoming volumes supplement the original CPJ. They present over 300 papyri that have been published since 1957. They also include papyri in languages other than Greek (Hebrew, Aramaic, Demotic), and literary papyri which had not been included in the old CPJ. Aside from quite a number of papyri in these categories, the present volume (of over 100 documents) includes 21 papyri from Herakleopolis in Middle-Egypt that record the existence of a Jewish self-ruling body – the politeuma. These papyri put an end to a long-standing dispute over whether such a Jewish institution had ever existed in Egypt.

Dieser Band enthält die zwischen 1893 und 1908 entstandenen Arbeiten Max Webers zur Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte des Altertums, darunter den bekannten Vortrag'Die sozialen Gründe des Untergangs der antiken Kultur'(1896) sowie eine Untersuchung zur'germanischen Sozialverfassung'. Vor allem aber sind sämtliche drei Fassungen der ursprünglich im Handwörterbuch der Staatswissenschaften erschienenen'Agrarverhältnisse im Altertum'abgedruckt, von denen die umfangreiche letzte Fassung (1907/08) zu Recht als Webers bedeutendstes Werk zur Antike gilt. Weber geht hier unter Einbeziehung von Mesopotamien, Ägypten und Israel den grundlegenden Fragen der sozialen und ökonomischen Strukturen des Altertums zwischen'Oikenwirtschaft'und'Kapitalismus'und den Auffassungen von Mommsen, Meyer, Bücher und Rostovtzeff nach. Er insistiert dabei auf sorgfältiger Begriffsbildung und übergreifender Strukturanalyse. Dieses auch heute so frisch wie zu seiner Entstehungszeit wirkende Hauptwerk des Bandes kann als eine Art Manifest für ein gesellschafts- und wirtschaftsgeschichtlich verstandenes Altertum gelten, das für Weber ein aufschlußreiches Pendant zur modernen Kulturentwicklung bildete. Die Edition legt kritisch überprüfte Texte aller Abhandlungen vor, dokumentiert die Entstehungsgeschichte der einzelnen Arbeiten anhand der Briefe und belegt dabei die Zusammenhänge zwischen Webers nationalökonomischer Vorlesungstätigkeit (bis 1898) und seinem Interesse an der Antike. Die durch ein ausführliches Glossar ergänzten Erläuterungen liefern zahlreiche Hinweise auf die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen von Webers Ausführungen.

Können Christen in der antiken Polis gemäß ihrem Glauben leben? Dieser Frage stellten sich die Kirchenväter immer wieder. Eine besonders prominente Stimme in dieser Diskussion war die des Johannes Chrysostomos (ca. 349‒407), der in zwei der bedeutendsten Metropolen seiner Zeit, in Antiochia und Konstantinopel, wirkte. Johannes zählt zu den schärfsten Kritikern des urbanen Lebens in der Spätantike, vor allem der Theaterdarbietungen und Vergnügungen. Gleichzeitig musste er seinen Gemeinden Möglichkeiten aufzeigen, wie Christen den reinen Glauben in der Stadt bewahren und nach außen demonstrieren konnten. Jan R. Stenger untersucht das Bild des städtischen Raumes, das der Kirchenvater dabei entwarf, und die rhetorischen Strategien, mit denen er die Christianisierung und Humanisierung der klassischen Polis zu erreichen suchte. The Aitolians have had a bad press, regarded as pirates and brigands, and their state as a pirate state built on terrorist tactics. This book treats them as what they really were, a normal Hellenistic state. They constructed an original and successful polity which provided peace and prosperity for its inhabitants, and played a major part in Greek history for a century and a half.The approach is chronological, beginning with the origin and formation of the league and its early expansion, and then dealing with its long duel with Macedon, and concluding with its destruction by Rome.This is the first full account of the history of the league which approaches it as an independent state rather than as the enemy of other states and peoples. It complements the standard histories of the other Hellenistic states.

This aim of this work is to provide part of the basis for the study of a widely misunderstood people of Ancient Greece, the Aitolians. It is the people of any society who are its constituents, and only when we know who they were and what they did can that society be properly investigated.By accumulating a list of all known Aitolians, their origins, parentage, their place in the society, and any other details discoverable, it is possible to reconstitute Aitolian families, and to study various sections and aspects of their society.The prosopography and the studies based on it form part of the essential background for the author's history of The League of the Aitolians (published by Brill earlier in 1999), and they also form a contribution to the study of the society which was Ancient Greece.

Good communications, bad communications, miscommunications, or no communications at all have driven everything from world events to the most mundane of interactions. At the broadest level, communication entails many registers and modes: verbal, iconographic, symbolic, oral, written, and performed. Zum Buch Im Jahr 431 v. Chr. standen sich mit dem Ersten Attischen Seebund und dem Peloponnesischen Bund zwei in etwa gleichstarke Machtblöcke unversöhnlich und voller Mißtrauen gegenüber. Violent conflict between individuals and groups was as common in the ancient world as it has been in more recent history. Detested in theory, it nevertheless became as frequent as war between sovereign states. The importance of such ‘stasis'was recognised by political thinkers of the time, especially Thucydides and Aristotle, both of whom tried to analyse its causes. Violence, Civil Strife and Revolution in the Classical City, first published in 1982, gives a conspectus of stasis in the societies of Greek antiquity, and traces the development of civil strife as city-states grew in political, social and economic sophistication. Aristocratic rivalry, tensions between rich and poor, imperialism and constitutional crisis are all discussed, while special consideration is given to the attitudes of the participants and the theoretical explanations offered at the time. In conclusion, civil strife in the ancient world is compared to more recent conflicts, both domestic and international.
