This book focuses on scientific terminology and phraseology in research papers in the domains of new technologies which remain to be highly specialized means of communicating. It approaches scientific communication both from the theoretical and practical perspective with the use of corpus linguistics methodology. The current study is a holistic and comprehensive approach to message construction starting from the macrostructure of a research paper, via terminology and phraseology, ending with the pragmatic aspects, all of which contribute to communicating research results.The book will be an indispensable aid for language researchers and translators as well as anyone interested in scientific communication, particularly in technical and empirical domains.

The book offers a comprehensive overview of current research in Slavic linguistics from a theoretical and experimental perspective and from a variety of languages. The selected papers from the 11th European Conference on Formal Description of Slavic Languages (FDSL 11) that took place at the University of Potsdam in 2015, illustrate the advancement of Slavic linguistic studies and their outreach for the development of general linguistics. The guest paper by Noam Chomsky at the beginning of the book sets a clear sign in this direction and may be taken as an acknowledgement of the field.

Methods in Dialectology is a venerable institution, having started in 1972 in London, Western Ontario, Canada. This book is a collection of papers presented at Methods XVI in Tachikawa, Japan, in 2017. It was the first time Methods took place in Asia. In this volume, the emphasis is on diverse methods and diverse research questions. Many of the papers focus on language innovation, language change, corpus studies and linguistic atlas from different perspectives. At the same time, methodological innovation is very much in focus. Its emphasis meant that several papers showcased cutting-edge quantitative techniques that allow dialectologists to address questions that had been thought impossible to answer only a few years ago.

This book is a selection of papers presented at the 11th International Conference on Middle English (ICOME11), held at the University of Florence, Italy from 5 to 8 February 2019. The papers, organised under three headings “Textual Interlacing,” “Borrowing and the Lexicon,” and “Language at Different Levels,” interface different fields of linguistics, literature and philology in the context of Medieval England and offer a holistic view of current research within Middle English studies. The contributors employ a wealth of different new and traditional approaches and methodologies, and deal with materials ranging from canonical literary works to scientific and practical texts, including electronic corpora and databases.

The papers compiled in the present volume reflect the key theme of the most recent Duo Colloquium sessions – contextuality. The psychological notion of context has been central to translation research for decades, and it has evolved along with the development of translational thought, translation types and tools. The theme of contextuality can be understood at any level, from the geopolitical to the textual, and embraced by both academic and professional considerations of translational and interpreting phenomena. It is centred on context, contexts and/or decontextualisation in translation and interpreting theory and practice from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Discussing the above-mentioned notions is the subject of the present volume.

TRANSLATA III ist die dritte einer Reihe von Konferenzen zur translationswissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung. En La Historia de la lengua, la dialectología y el concepto de cambio lingüístico en el pensamiento de Eugenio Coseriu se estudia el pensamiento del lingüista rumano desde el punto de vista histórico. El análisis tiene como punto de partida la tesis básica de Sincronía, diacronía e historia, a saber, el hecho de que el cambio lingüístico ha sido, a lo largo de la historia de la lingüística, un pseudoproblema y, en consecuencia, ha habido una serie de consecuencias en la reflexión en torno a esta ciencia. A partir de ahí se dan dos tipos de trabajos. Por un lado, los que tienen un carácter sobre todo teórico, que puede llegar a convertirse en aportaciones al conocimiento sobre la historia de la lingüística. Por otro lado, hay varios estudios sobre la repercusión de la dialectología en el desarrollo de la historia de las lenguas, específicamente el español.

Das Testament stellte den wohl wichtigsten Rechtsakt im Leben eines römischen Bürgers dar. Diese zentrale Bedeutung des Testaments für die antike römische Gesellschaft ist nicht nur aufgrund der literarischen Überlieferung erschließbar, sondern wird vor allem auch durch die eindrucksvolle Masse an Rechtstexten zu diesem Thema belegt. Das kunstvolle Regelungsgeflecht, welches gewährleisten sollte, dass der «letzte Wille» Wirksamkeit erlangte, sowie die Frage, wie die Grundsätze des Testamentsrechts praktischen Niederschlag in den überlieferten Dokumenten fand, war Gegenstand einer internationalen Tagung im November 2020. Die Schriftfassungen der Beiträge von führenden Experten aus Deutschland, Italien, Ungarn und der Schweiz sind im vorliegenden Band versammelt.

This volume collects selected papers written by young translation scholars who were CETRA 2014 participants. This book analyses the heterogeneity of translational norms, diversity of cultures and the challenges of intercultural transfer. The authors analyze a wide array of source texts, from the translations of contemporary prose and audiovisual products into Brazilian, Japanese and Swedish, to renderings of texts more distant in time, such as the Bible and «Golestân» written in medieval Persian. The book also concentrates on selected meta-level issues, such as the integrity of the discipline and its language, as well as the development of translation competence. The norm-focused and culture-related framework offers considerable research potential for Translation Studies.

The topic of the book is the relationship between mind and language on all levels of linguistic research. Over the past decade, the cognitive approach to language and its methodology have started to permeate other areas of linguistic study, which, in turn, is opening up room for new types of research and resulting in new knowledge that contributes to explaining not only the linguistic phenomena, but also how they function in a linguistic community and contemporary society. The book tries to reflect these new developments. It consists of 11 chapters organized into three thematic sections: language and mind from linguistic perspective, the language and mind of the translator, and language and mind from the teacher's perspective.

This book comprises a compilation of papers authored by researchers who took part in the 5th International Conference on Economic, Business, Financial, and Institutional Translation held at the University of Alicante in 2023. The Philosophical Transactions and the letters preserved in the Royal Society's archives provide precious insights into the making of science and the workings of the Republic of Letters in the early and late modern periods. This book investigates the Royal Society's relations with Italy through a socio-historical and critical linguistic analysis of the papers concerning Italian research published in the Transactions and of the epistolary exchanges between the Society's Fellows and Italian scholars. The aim, from the linguistic perspective, is to describe the features and development of papers based on Italian research published in the journal, as well as the discursive aspects that characterise the exchanges between the two countries. Ultimately, from the historical and cultural point of view, the study will provide a picture of the development of Anglo-Italian relations in scientific context from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century.

As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.

This volume comprises 17 papers that are dealing with European pluricentric languages where there are some issues of contact and conflict. An overview about all European languages and of those that are pluricentric is also provided. Central topics are human rights for non-dominant varieties, and conflicts in pluricentric languages on the Iberian peninsula and on the British Isles. Several papers also deal with languages from a different point of view, with languages where the status of pluricentricity is disputed (Albanian, Post-Yougoslav-languages). For the first time the pluricentricity of Finno-Ugric languages is dealt with alongside papers about the pluricentricity of Russian. This is the seventh volume that is published by the'International Working Group on non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages'.

This book aims at bridging language research and language teaching and contains four sections. This volume contains a collection of papers that deal with Romance linguistics from two broad perspectives: multilingualism and language acquisition. This book offers a selection of sixteen papers presented at the 29th international annual conference of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society held in 2015. The aim of this book is to provide a comparative analysis of intra- and inter- linguistic features, setting a benchmark for future typological studies. It contrasts cognitive and functional aspects of causative, agent-deprofiling, and resultative constructions in two typologically distant languages: English and Urdu. The detailed nature of the contrastive analysis opens doors for future research on the complexities of each construction and, by extension, of both languages. The study is framed within the field of cognitively-oriented constructionist approaches to language, specifically within the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), proposed by Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal. With its cross-linguistic dimension, it develops central aspects of this model at the argument-structure level and provides evidence of the role of high-level metaphor and metonymy in the motivating grammatical phenomena.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 60th International Academic Week organized by the Southeast Europe Association in October 2022. The event brought together scholars to discuss the various facets of international return migration from diverse destination countries back to Southeast Europe. Within this volume, the concept of return takes on a dynamic and multifaceted character. It is seen not as a one-way journey but as an ongoing, non-linear, and reversible process consisting of multiple stages. This approach recognizes that migration is a journey with many dimensions, involving mobility in various directions. Language pedagogy is constantly informed by developments in Applied Linguistics. Furthermore, there is lively communication with neighbouring disciplines such as Literary and Cultural Studies. The present volume reflects this fruitful fluidity. It is a tribute to the linguist Martin Pütz, whose work has always been guided by this interdisciplinary spirit.

This book offers a collection of papers tackling aspects in the fields of Applied Linguistics, discourse analysis, teaching and translation. This volume expands the discussion on the language management (LM) framework through two themes: interests and power, which are driving forces of the LM process, observable and describable at every step. It consists of thirteen contributions analyzing diverse situations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Authors focus on a range of topics, including the role of language ideologies in various types of institutions, such as higher education institutions and language cultivation centers, the struggle to maintain minority languages, the positions of the actors involved in the process of making policies concerning foreign language teaching, or the processes that learning and choosing to use foreign languages entail. Emergent insights into the commonalities in the ways in which interests and power guide or underlie the management of language, communication, and sociocultural problems contribute significantly to the strength of LM as a sociolinguistic framework.

The Festschrift volume consists of 42 contributions by 55 authors from 13 countries. The papers, written in Catalan, English, French, Russian and Spanish, treat data from these and some other languages (Arabic, BCS [Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian], Czech, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, Upper Kuskokwim Athabaskan [Alaska], Shughni [Pamir]). They pertain to virtually all branches of'core'synchronic linguistics (with occasional excursions into diachrony, literary theory, philology and religious studies): semantics, lexicology / lexicography, syntax and morphology. Linguistic Landscape studies examine language(s) in public spaces. This study focuses on the interplay of language, space and sociocultural context: Yaoundé's Linguistic Landscape is examined with respect to its multilingual and multimodal nature. Next to a sociolinguistic framework, a (socio)cognitive analysis is also put centre stage.

This book presents the first large-scale investigation of the structure and functions of linguistic impoliteness and impoliteness metalanguage in contemporary British children's fiction. The study ties together findings from pragmatics, language acquisition research, literary studies, and translation studies with novel data-driven insights. The study shows that children's fiction prefers direct, unmitigated impoliteness tokens to highlight key aspects of plot and characterisation. Impoliteness metalanguage is used to clarify impoliteness events to the child. The study provides a framework for the investigation of impoliteness in translation, which gives evidence of pragmatic differences, as well as differing views of children's cognitive abilities in two linguacultures.

This book contains a selection of papers on issues of current interest in syntax and morpho-syntax. Most topics pertain to the question of the relation between word order and syntactic structure. The discussion starts with a proposal of extending the theory of relativization to reason clauses. It continues with the analysis of the realization of focus in Basque and the discussion of current views on the syntax of cleft constructions. Next, an inquiry into the rigidity of sentence left-periphery is offered in a cross-linguistic perspective. The two final contributions discuss feature-free derivations in syntax applied to a single morpho-syntactic problem, and the question of gradient acceptability of Polish sentences featuring possessive items in the context of the competition between their reflexive and pronominal forms.

What is identity and how do we construct identity? Why do we have to deconstruct identities again? And what is the role that language policy measures and anti-discriminatory actions play in this process? This volume deals with the topic of identity formation in the Slavic region. It opens with an extensive general introduction to the topic of identity. In its core part, measures meant to enable politically correct speech and anti-discriminatory language are presented for different Slavic languages and cultural spheres. Political correctness, antidiscrimination, and antisexism play an important role in the Slavic region when it comes to influencing language and the use of language. Three additional papers concern Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech and textology of literary works in Russian.

The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Fifth International Symposium Russian Grammar: System–Usus–Language Variation, from September 22 to 24, 2021, at the University of Potsdam (Germany). The selected essays tackle the issues that arise when Russian Grammar meets new linguistic paradigms (such as corpus linguistics) and new challenges (such as heritage languages). The relevant findings are discussed with a particular focus on an updated version of the 1980 Academy grammar of Russian.

This book offers a range of empirically-based case studies in the field of cultural linguistics and neighbouring disciplines such as intercultural pragmatics and language pedagogy. The first section explores intercultural communication and cross-linguistic/cross-cultural investigations in settings such as Brazil, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, Morocco, France and Canada. The second section focuses on applications of cultural linguistics in the field of foreign language teaching. By drawing on English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language contexts, the case studies presented further examine the ramification of cultural linguistics in the language classroom, enabling a better understanding of culture-specific conceptual differences between learners'first and target language(s).

The papers collected in this volume present multiple views on the skills required of LSP teachers and their preparation for the profession. The authors, whose experience comes from diverse educational contexts, ponder on the nature of the necessary knowledge and know-how as well as on the methods used in the professional training of the LSP teachers. The authors have undertaken to formulate a proposal, based on both empirical data and personal experience of the teachers, which would provide us with operational and effective methodological solutions to　be employed while teaching　language for specific purposes. Les textes réunis dans le présent volume exposent les idées relatives aux compétences des enseignants des langues de spécialité et aux parcours de leur préparation au métier. Issus de divers contextes éducatifs, les auteurs s'interrogent sur la nature des savoirs et savoir-faire ainsi qu'aux modalités de leur formation. Cette réflexion, qui prend appui sur les données empiriques ou les expériences personnelles, s'oriente vers la proposition des résolutions méthodologies opérationnelles au service de l'enseignement des langues sur objectifs spécifiques.

The present volume is a collection of 14 papers written by several international scholars who examine a variety of descriptive and theoretical issues topical in current phonetic and phonological research. This is done through a meticulous analysis of a rich body of data, often obtained experimentally, taken from such languages as Gothic, Sanskrit, Old Chinese, Malaylam, Japanese, Polish, Hungarian, English and Portuguese as well as through theoretical considerations which carry broader implications for the study of sound systems.

As cognitive scientists continue to probe into the nature of the human mind, it is increasingly clear that research into cognition cannot be dissociated from the context in which our mental activity occurs. The papers collected in this book testify to the growing interest in adopting a broad characterisation of what counts as relevant context. The vices of seeking essences behind complex phenomena should not go unnoticed, the primary, and possibly the most crucial, downside of this approach being a reductionist treatment of the human mind. With this book, the authors want to show that humans are not merely brains, minds, speakers, learners, readers, etc., but, first and foremost, complex beings who communicate within and beyond the contexts of their own cultures.

For decades, the focus of Metaphor Studies laid on Conceptual Metaphor and its role in the human conceptual system. This study, however, focuses on metaphor in communication. Its aim is to shed light on how commenters in online debates discuss EU-related topics via Scenario Negotiation, expressing and negotiating their points of view via Metaphorical Scenarios. The study offers a review of current metaphor theory and practical approaches and proposes an Integrated Model of Scenario Negotiation. The results are based on context-sensitive, qualitative analysis of data which stem from a corpus of online debates from the Guardian's Comment is free section. The discussion illustrates the genre-specific conceptual-communicative functions of Scenario Negotiation in naturally occurring discourse.

This book is a collection of papers pertaining to some of the current problems of language description couched in terms of recent advances of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics. The analyses conducted by the authors examine the interrelation between culture, discourse, grammar and cognition, with a particular focus placed on the nature and role of formulaic language.

Der Band vereinigt 14 österreichische Beiträge (12 Papers, 2 Poster) zum Internationalen Slawistikkongress 2018 in Belgrad. Acht linguistischen Beiträge betreffen klassische und innovative Bereiche der Sprachwissenschaft von Syntax und Lexikografie über Gender und Codeswitching bis Fachsprache und Internet, ein Beitrag behandelt Texte der Slavia Orthodoxa. Die behandelten Sprachen sind Polnisch, Serbisch, Russisch, und Ukrainisch. Vier literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit postjugoslawischen Literaturen (bosnischer, kroatischer und serbischer) und deren Thematisierung von medial vermitteltem Gedächtnis und Erinnerung; ein weiterer Beitrag behandelt die russisch-orthodoxen Hymnographie des 16. This book offers a collection of papers that, taken jointly, show the academic potential of English Studies – its most contemporary lines of investigation seen against the area's traditional concerns. The chapters illustrate a cross section of research in English literature, linguistics, language teaching and translation studies – disciplines traditionally pursued at Departments of English. They also show an expansion of the core philological lines of research into other areas of knowledge, such as semiotics or comparative and cognitive studies. The book thus makes a strong case that the philological ethos, reflected in the Polish translation of «English Studies» as filologia angielska, still constitutes a valuable academic formula.

This volume contains articles based on the presentations given at the Nordic Prosody XII conference, which was held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway) in August 2016. The contributors investigate various prosodic aspects, including intonation, rhythm, speaking rate, intensity, and breathing, using approaches ranging from phonetic and phonological analysis to speech technology methods. While most of the studies examine read speech, some of them explore the prosodics of spontaneous speech. The languages that receive most attention are Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic as well as Estonian, Latgalian and Polish. In addition to the larger Nordic languages, several papers focus on regional languages spoken in these areas.
