Excerpt:'The Owl shows its blue and gilt cover on the bookstalls every Saturday morning. Thursday nights are therefore nights of turmoil in the offices in Fleet Street. They are always wearing nights; more so, of course, in hot weather than in cold. They are nights of discomfort for the office-boy and of something worse for the editor. Spencer Hastings edited The Owl, and owned a third of it; and the little paper's success showed him to possess both brains and capacity for hard work. For a man of thirty-three he had achieved much; but that capacity for work was hard tested—especially on Thursday nights. As to the brains, there was really no doubt of their quality. Take, for instance, The Owl “specials.” After he had thought of them and given birth to the first, The Owl, really a weekly review, was enabled to reap harvests in the way of “scoops” without in any way degenerating into a mere purveyor of news.'

The Convenient Marriage by Georgette Heyer is a delightful Georgian romance that blends humor, charm, and a touch of intrigue. Set in the late 18th century, the novel follows the story of the spirited Horatia'Horry'Winwood, a seventeen-year-old girl who impulsively offers herself in marriage to the wealthy and much older Earl of Rule to save her family from financial ruin. Horatia's elder sister, Elizabeth, was initially intended to marry the Earl, but she is in love with another man. To prevent her sister's unhappiness and to secure her family's future, the determined and headstrong Horry proposes to Rule herself. Intrigued by her audacity and charmed by her youthful innocence, Rule agrees to the marriage. As Horatia navigates her new life as the Countess of Rule, she finds herself entangled in the sophisticated and sometimes treacherous world of London society. Her marriage of convenience soon faces challenges, including the machinations of the devious Lady Massey and the return of Rule's former flame, the beautiful and manipulative Lady Caroline. Excerpt:'Ever since the “first breakfast,” groups of passengers had been trooping down the gang-plank, hurrying with guide-book and satchel to “do” Naples, Vesuvius, Pompeii, etc., before the steamer should sail again in the evening. An angular chap in proper steamer négligé lounged contentedly on the starboard rail and watched them go. By eight o'clock he seemed to have the starboard rail to himself. At that hour he was leaning heavily forward, presumably watching the ant-like stevedores loading and unloading the steamer, but he was quite aware of another lone passenger, slowly moving towards him. He had seen her come on at Genoa—anyone would have noticed the clean-cut, tailor-made figure—and on the journey from Genoa to Naples he had noted her once or twice striding the deck alone; but he did not know even so much as her name. He did not know her, but, as she came up to him and lingered at the starboard rail, he knew instinctively that he would borrow money from her.'

George Eliot and George Eliot
- Abstract
“Nothing is so good as it seems beforehand.”Silas Marner is a simple weaver from Lantern Yard, an impoverished area of Northern England. He is the main protagonist who is wrongly accused of being a robber. Silas loses his sweetheart, reputation, and as a result, has to move out of the town. He dedicates the next fifteen years of his life to earning money. Despite developing an unhealthy obsession, he is still the same just and honest person albeit rather stingy by this time as monetary enrichment became the sole purpose of his being. But when injustice strikes again, Silas is about to change his perception of life forever. What he first considers to be the ultimate disaster of his existence, turns into the thing that gives a new meaning to his life. This moral tale will set things in the right place presenting a picture of justice and love that rise above ignorance and greed. The work is regarded as a pastoral novel and a moral tale with fairytale elements. A notable feature is Eliot's representation of the effects of industrialisation. Indeed, upon Silas's return to his home town in his old age, he can barely recognise the town where new buildings and factories have been erected. The author deploys her signature technique of setting the novel in a more distant past, which gives her the advantage of scope and hindsight. Published a year before Hugo's world-famous Les Misérables, Silas Marner tackles many similar tropes as effectively and authentically but in a more condensed form – in particular, finding the meaning in life when there seems to be nothing left to hold on to.The Legend Classics series:Around the World in Eighty DaysThe Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Importance of Being EarnestAlice's Adventures in WonderlandThe MetamorphosisThe Railway ChildrenThe Hound of the BaskervillesFrankensteinWuthering HeightsThree Men in a BoatThe Time MachineLittle WomenAnne of Green GablesThe Jungle BookThe Yellow Wallpaper and Other StoriesDraculaA Study in ScarletLeaves of GrassThe Secret GardenThe War of the WorldsA Christmas CarolStrange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeHeart of DarknessThe Scarlet LetterThis Side of ParadiseOliver TwistThe Picture of Dorian GrayTreasure IslandThe Turn of the ScrewThe Adventures of Tom SawyerEmmaThe TrialA Selection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan PoeGrimm Fairy TalesThe AwakeningMrs DallowayGulliver's TravelsThe Castle of OtrantoSilas MarnerHard Times

- Abstract
The English interwar writer Arthur Ransome, best known for the ‘Swallows and Amazons'children's books, is noted for popularising the pattern for “holiday adventure” stories. A writer of various genres, his first success, ‘Bohemia in London', is a partly autobiographical account of his early days. He also published a noted general ‘History of Story-Telling', as well as landmark critical works on Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde. P.G. Wodehouse and P.G. Wodehouse
- Abstract
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. His creations include the feather-brained Bertie Wooster and his sagacious valet, Jeeves; the immaculate and loquacious Psmith; Lord Emsworth and the Blandings Castle set; the Oldest Member, with stories about golf; and Mr Mulliner, with tall tales on subjects ranging from bibulous bishops to megalomaniac movie moguls. Born in Guildford, the third son of a British magistrate based in Hong Kong, Wodehouse spent happy teenage years at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life. After leaving school he was employed by a bank but disliked the work and turned to writing in his spare time. His early novels were mostly school stories, but he later switched to comic fiction. Most of Wodehouse's fiction is set in his native United Kingdom, although he spent much of his life in the US and used New York and Hollywood as settings for some of his novels and short stories. Wodehouse worked extensively on his books, sometimes having two or more in preparation simultaneously. He would take up to two years to build a plot and write a scenario of about thirty thousand words. After the scenario was complete he would write the story. Early in his career he would produce a novel in about three months, but he slowed in old age to around six months. He used a mixture of Edwardian slang, quotations from and allusions to numerous poets, and several literary techniques to produce a prose style that has been compared to comic poetry and musical comedy. - Abstract
Ian Lancaster Fleming was a British writer who is best known for his postwar James Bond series of spy novels. While working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War, Fleming was involved in planning Operation Goldeneye and in the planning and oversight of two intelligence units, 30 Assault Unit and T-Force. He drew from his wartime service and his career as a journalist for much of the background, detail, and depth of his James Bond novels. The Bond books were written in post-war Britain, when the country was still an imperial power. As the series progressed, the British Empire was in decline; journalist William Cook observed that'Bond pandered to Britain's inflated and increasingly insecure self-image, flattering us with the fantasy that Britannia could still punch above her weight.'The books should be read in publication order. The exception is book 10 - The Spy Who Loved Me which is best read out of sequence, earlier or later in the series, so as not to break up the main sequence of 9 - Thunderball, 11 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 12 - You Only Live Twice, and 13 - The Man With the Golden Gun which MUST be read in that order. 2 - Live and Let Die must be read before 6 - Doctor No. Contents: Casino Royale Live and Let Die Moonraker Diamonds Are Forever From Russia, with Love Dr. No Goldfinger Thunderball The Spy Who Loved Me On Her Majesty's Secret Service You Only Live Twice The Man with the Golden Gun For Your Eyes Only Octopussy and The Living Daylights

John Wyndham created some of the most intriguing and intelligent science fiction of the 20th century. Some of his works were set in post-apocalyptic landscapes. His best known works include The Day of the Triffids (1951), filmed in 1962, and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957), which was filmed in 1960 as Village of the Damned, in 1995 under the same title, and again in 2022 in Sky Max under its original title. But some readers consider that The Chrysalids was really his best. The ideas in The Chrysalids are echoed in The Handmaid's Tale, whose author, Margaret Atwood, has acknowledged Wyndham's work as an influence. Wyndham also wrote several short stories, ranging from hard science fiction to whimsical fantasy. - Abstract
Set on the eve of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland, The Monastery is full of supernatural events, theological conflict and humour. Located in the lawless Scottish Borders, the novel depicts the monastery of Kennaquhair (a thinly disguised Melrose Abbey, whose ruins are still to be seen near Scott's own home at Abbotsford) on the verge of dissolution, and the fortunes of two brothers as they respond to a new social and religious order. Highlights of the narrative include a moving encounter between two representatives of opposing sides in the Reformation controversy who had been students together in less troubled times, and the final formal procession of the Kennaquhair monks as the Reformed forces arrive. A talking-point when the work was first published, the mysterious spectral White Lady, guardian of the magical Black Book, still intrigues readers. A strong comic element is provided by Sir Piercie Shafton with his absurd linguistic mannerisms fashionable at the English court. The narrative is preceded by one of Scott's most charming and playful introductory exchanges between the fictional local antiquary Cuthbert Clutterbuck and the Author of Waverley.

Stephen Leacock and Stephen Leacock
- Abstract
Stephen P H Butler Leacock FRSC was born on 30th December 1869 in Swanmore, near Southampton, England. He was the third of eleven children. The family emigrated to Canada in 1876, settling on a 100-acre farm in Sutton, Ontario. There Leacock was home-schooled until, funded by his grandfather, he was enrolled into the elite private school Upper Canada College in Toronto. Academically he was very strong. In 1887, at age 17, he became head boy and then proceeded on to the University of Toronto to study languages and literature. Despite completing two years of study in only one, he was obliged to leave the university because his father, an alcoholic, had abandoned the family and finances could not be stretched to continue his attendance. Leacock now enrolled in a three-month course at Strathroy Collegiate Institute to become a qualified high school teacher with a regular income. He worked at Upper Canada College from 1889 through 1899 and later resumed his studies part-time at the University of Toronto, graduating with a B A in 1891. It was during this period that he was first published in The Varsity, a campus newspaper. But his passion was now economics and political theory. In 1899 he enrolled for postgraduate studies at the University of Chicago and earned his PhD in 1903.Leacock had married Beatrix Hamilton in 1900 and 15 years later the couple had their only child, Stephen. In time father and son developed a love-hate relationship, partially caused by his son's diminutive stature of only four feet. Accepting a post at McGill University Leacock would remain there until he retired in 1936. In 1906, he wrote ‘Elements of Political Science', quickly adopted as a standard textbook for the next two decades and his most profitable book. He also began public speaking and lecturing, and took a year's leave of absence in 1907 to speak throughout Canada on the subject of national unity. Leacock had submitted humourous articles to the Toronto magazine Grip in 1894, and was soon published in other Canadian and US magazines. In 1910, he printed privately a collection of these as ‘Literary Lapses'. Acquired by the British publisher, John Lane, it was released in London and New York. He was now a commercially successful writer. There soon followed ‘Nonsense Novels'(1911) and the sentimental favourite, ‘Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town'(1912). His ‘Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich'(1914) is a darker collection that satirizes city life. Collections of sketches continued to be published almost annually, filled with a mixture of light-hearted whimsy, parody, nonsense, and satire. In later life, he wrote on the art of humour writing and published biographies on Twain and Dickens. Together with continued speaking tours he also added to his non-fiction with many well-regarded and award-winning volumes on Canada.Politically Leacock was a social conservative and a partisan Conservative. He opposed women's right to vote and had a varied record on non-English immigration. He was a champion of Empire but an advocate of social welfare legislation and wealth redistribution, but he often caused friction with his racist views towards blacks and Indigenous peoples.Leacock has for some time been forgotten as an economist, but it's often quoted that in 1911 more people had heard of him than had heard of Canada. For the decade after 1915 Leacock was the most popular humorist in the English-speaking world.Stephen Leacock died on 28th March 1944 of throat cancer in Toronto, Canada. He was 74. He was buried in the St George the Martyr Churchyard, Sutton, Ontario.

- Abstract
A “sharp, amusing story” (The Guardian) about the fountain of youth and its implications for women's rights, by one of the twentieth century's most brilliant—and neglected—science fiction and horror writers, whom Stephen King called “the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced.” “It was a genius move for John Wyndham to center an age-slowing narrative on women, who are still today pressured to remain youthful-looking forever, or succumb to social invisibility.... Wyndham was uniquely gifted at skewering humankind's foibles while maintaining a shred of hope that our better angels would prevail.”—Kate Folk, from the introduction What if humans discovered the secret to prolonged life? Francis Saxover and Diana Brackley, two biochemists investigating a rare lichen, separately discover that it has a remarkable property: It slows the aging process almost to a halt. Francis, realizing the horrifying implications of an ever-youthful wealthy elite, decides to keep his findings a secret. But the younger and more daring Diana sees an opportunity to overturn the male status quo and free women from the career-versus-children binary—in short, a chance to remake the world.

- Abstract
The Duel is a novel by Russian author Aleksandr Kuprin published in 1905. It is generally considered his best work; even though Kuprin's 1896 short story Moloch first made his name known as a writer it was The Duel (1905) which made him famous. Because of it'Kuprin was highly praised by fellow writers including Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, Leonid Andreyev, Nobel Prize-winning Ivan Bunin'and Leo Tolstoy who acclaimed him a true successor to Chekhov. The story concerns an intelligent young officer, Second Lieutenant Romashov, stationed at a dull military garrison in southern Russia where he can not stomach his sadistic and stupid colleagues and military life. He falls in love with the wife of a superior officer, a cold and calculating woman whose one ambition is her husband's advancement. The affair leads in the end to the duel of the title, both externally, and figuratively through the young man's naive dreams of grandeur confronting the degeneration of military life and society of the time.

- Abstract
Western novelette by W C Tuttle, published in Adventure magazine. Excerpt:'It was the year of the big drouth in the valley of Moon River; a season when every blade of grass was worth its weight in gold to the cattlemen, who watched with jealous care over their unstaked portions of the range and guarded closely their almost dry water-holes. Day after day through the long summer the merciless sun had baked the grass-roots; browning the land; burning below the surface, until a puff of wind would drift the soil, as a wind drifts dry snow. Even the sage and greasewood turned from purple to brownish-gray. Along the river, which wound its way through this crescent-shaped valley, the leaves of willow and cottonwood hummed paper-dry in the hot winds, while the river, itself, was shrunken to half its normal Summer stage. The range cattle were red-eyed, hollow of flank and dust-colored and when they stopped to graze their panting nostrils would send up tiny puffs of smoke-like dust. In all that valley of rolling hills, which sloped upward on both sides to the hazy heights of the Shoshone Mountains, there was no sign of green vegetation. Riding down the slope of one of these hills, heading toward the river, came a tall, thin cowboy, unshaven and unshorn. The expression of his thin face was serious as he squinted into the hazy distance and spoke softly to his rangy bay horse— “Bronc,'f this ain't the best place I ever seen t'commit murder in, then my name ain't ‘Skeeter Bill'Sarg.” The horse sniffed suspiciously at the dry grass, but did not crop at it.'

- Abstract
Serious Reflections During the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe with his Vision of the Angelick World, first published in 1720 and considered a sequel to The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, is a collection of essays written in the voice of the Crusoe character. Expressing Defoe's thoughts about many moral questions of the day, the narrator takes up isolation, poverty, religious liberty, and epistemology. Defoe also used this volume to revive his interest in poetry, not the satiric poetry of the early eighteenth century, but the more inspirational verse that appeared in some of his later works. Serious Reflections also includes an imaginative flight in which Crusoe wanders among the planets, a return to the moon voyage impulse of Defoe's 1705 work The Consolidator. Illuminating the ideas and philosophy of this most influential of English novelists, it is invaluable for any student of the period.

- Abstract
John Waring seems to have everything to look forward to. He's just been elected as president of Corinth University, and his engagement has been confirmed to an attractive local widow, who loves him dearly. But then there appears on the scene a beautiful and mysterious young woman who's quite clearly lying about who she is. At sight of her, Waring is clearly more than startled. Later that night he continues to work alone in his study, all doors locked, and the following morning he's found dead at his desk, stabbed in the jugular. Aside from the locked doors, just to make matters more mysterious there's no trace of the weapon. There are, however, small footprints in the snow outside the study's French windows, and these lead toward the boarding house where the Mystery Girl is lodging. (goodreads)

- Abstract
Silas Marner is a lowly weaver who is wrongfully accused of a crime, loses the woman he loves and the respect of his conservative neighbors. Shamed and broken, he attempts to build a new life without the reminder of everything he's lost. In the early nineteenth century, Silas Marner, is part of a small congregation where he earns a living as a weaver. When the group is suddenly robbed, members suspect Silas, prompting him to leave and embrace a life of isolation. His attempts to rebuild are thwarted when his own small fortune is stolen forcing him to start all over. Despite a desire for solitude, Silas stumbles across an abandoned child and decides to raise her as his own. Her presence changes his outlook, creating something he never thought he'd have – a family. Eliot examines the dangers of oppressive institutions that cast away members without mercy. It addresses groupthink and a fear of individualism. The story is a cautionary tale that emphasizes the importance of perspective, empathy and hope. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Silas Marner is both modern and readable. Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. The American author and creator of the folk character Uncle Remus, Joel Chandler Harris produced a wide body of works, reflecting his life and interests in the Deep South. - Abstract
Aleksandr Kuprin was born in Narovchat, Penza in Russia on 7th September 1870.At 3 his Father died and 3 years later he and mother moved into the Widows'Home in Kudrino, Moscow. His initial education at the Razumovsky boarding school was to cause him many childhood grievances, but he was popular amongst his peers and already a fine storyteller. In 1880 Kuprin enrolled at the Second Moscow Military High School and his interest in literature began in earnest along with the writing of several poems and some translations of foreign verse. In autumn, 1888 he entered the Alexander Military Academy in Moscow and graduated two years later as a sub-lieutenant and was posted to the 46th Dnieper Infantry Regiment for the next four years. In 1889 he published his debut short story ‘The Last Debut', based on the real life incident of the suicide by poisoning on stage of the singer Yevlalya Kadmina in 1881. Three years later came ‘Psyche'.He continued writing and in 1894 resigned from the Army with the publication of ‘The Enquiry'. The appearance of this story written and signed by an officer made further time in the military difficult. On a five-year-long trip through the South-West of the country he took up many jobs; dental care, land surveying, acting, circus performer, psalm singer, doctor, hunter, fisherman, all of these varied experiences were later used in his fiction. In summer 1894 Kuprin arrived in Kiev and began work for local newspapers Kievskoe Slovo, Zhizn i Iskusstvo, and later Kievlianin. He kept up his other contributions for newspapers further afield.Eight of his sketches were printed in book form in March 1896. His second collection ‘Miniatures', the following year, earned high praise from a certain Leo Tolstoy. In 1896 Moloch, Kuprin's first major work was published, a critique of the rapidly expanding Russian capitalism and a reflection of the growing social unrest in the country.By 1901 his reputation had earned him an invitation to St Petersburg to work on a popular monthly magazine. Here he met and befriended Anton Chekhov and Ivan Bunin and joined a literary society of the emerging young realist writers including Gorky, Bunin, and Leonid Andreyev. Marriage came in February 1902 to the daughter of the editor of Mir Bozhy raising gossip of nepotism. His long hours and responsibilities working for the monthly left him little time for his own writing. In 1904 Kuprin started working on ‘The Duel'. This novel, first conceived during his army years, and commenting on the'horror and tedium of army life,'was published in May 1905. For him it was cathartic for literature, a sensation. After the 1905 Revolution Kuprin became openly critical of the regime and put under secret police surveillance. Another brush with the law brought him a fine and ten days'house arrest. From 1905 he put himself forward as an elector to the first State Duma for the city of Petersburg. He also made several quite daring adventures; an air balloon flight with the renowned sportsman Sergey Utochkin, then to the Black Sea depths as a diver and accompanied the airman Ivan Zaikin on several airplane trips. In 1907 he divorced his wife and married Yelizaveta Geinrikh, who, in 1908, gave birth to their daughter Ksenia. In October 1909 Kuprin was awarded the prestigious Pushkin Prize, jointly with Bunin. In 1908 Kuprin started working on ‘The Pit', his most ambitious and controversial novel. This study of prostitution appeared in parts in 1909, 1914, and the third in 1915. Part I provoked controversy but Parts II and III only indifference and the beginning of a creative decline. As World War I broke out, Kuprin opened a military hospital in his Gatchina home, then visited towns on the Western front. As a reserve officer, he was called up in November 1
