- Abstract
This new edition brings to life Tobias Smollett's fourth novel, The Life and Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves. No annotated edition of the work existed before the second half of the twentieth century, and this comprehensive edition by Robert Folkenflik and Barbara Laning Fitzpatrick features more accurate text as well as scrupulous textual and critical information. Also included in the detailed introduction is a unique examination of Sir Launcelot Greaves, the first illustrated serial novel, in relation to the engravings by Anthony Walker.Sir Launcelot Greaves was a groundbreaking novel for Smollett. Published in British Magazine beginning in January 1760, it was the first major work by an English novelist to have been written specifically for serial publication. The novel, Smollett's shortest, differs stylistically from his previous works. The most attractive of his heroes, Sir Launcelot is virtuous and strange, and he is surrounded by a Smollettian menagerie whose various jargons are part of this novel's linguistic virtuosity and satire. Sir Launcelot's character is an English naturalization of Quixote. Although Sir Launcelot, unlike Quixote, is not the object of the author's satire, an idealistic madness is central to both characters. In Smollett's work the theme of madness is integral to the relationship between self and society as the work ponders both the constitution of madness and the alternatives to revenge.Sir Launcelot Greaves, though not Smollett's most heralded work, has not received the recognition it deserves. Folkenflik and Fitzpatrick present a definitive edition that will be appreciated by scholars and lovers of eighteenth-century literature.

Mark Twain and Mark Twain
- Abstract
TRAVEL BACK IN TIME WITH MARK TWAIN'S CLASSIC NOVELWritten by Mark Twain in 1889, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court tells the story of Hank Morgan, the quintessential self-reliant New Englander, a 19th-century engineer from Connecticut. After a severe blow to the head, Hank awakens to find himself inexplicably transported back in time and space to early medieval England during the reign of King Arthur. After a bit of confusion and his capture by one of King Arthur's knights, Hank realizes where he is and uses his technological knowledge to fool people into believing that he is a powerful magician. He becomes a rival of Merlin, who appears to be a fraud next to him, and gains the trust of King Arthur.Hank tries to make people's lives better by attempting to modernize the past. He is disgusted at the way the Barons treat the common people and tries to implement democratic ideas and reforms but is unable to change things and prevent the death of King Arthur.Twain wrote the book as a caricature of the romantic notions of chivalry and a satire of servitude and sovereignty. He celebrates plain and simple ingenuity as well as democratic values. Through this story where the past and present collide, Twain exposes the fragility of both utopias, destroying the myth of the romantic ideal as well as his own era's faith in scientific and social progress.“You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus”

7. Women of Wonder - The Darker Sex

- Abstract
Let's be clear. We are all equal under the law. However, even in these more modern times that is not an absolute and still remains a distant ambition for many. In the days when Britain ruled the waves and bestrode the world as its policeman and plunderer in chief it also subjugated half of its own people to second class status. Women were chattel and property. There were some exceptions based on wealth and birthright but for the overwhelming majority your lot was to fall in with the rules and do as you were told. Many did.But whilst male society sought to place obstacles in the path to equality, it could not deny their literary talents, which many times they circumvented by using male pseudonyms. However, the soaring sales of magazines and periodicals during the Victorian Age meant they had voracious appetites for literature, whatever the sex of its gender.Dozens of authors appeared to fill the need. Narratives had new ideas. Characters were emboldened by societal changes and the female voice taking responsibility. The women included here are talents that dazzle. Put them up against anyone and they rise to the top. Whether they remain with an avid readership today or faded to obscurity with the passing of the times their quality remains undimmed. They still speak to us with a clear and unique voice.

James Joyce and James Joyce
- Abstract
James Joyce's deeply personal and “most memorable novel” (H. G. Wells) detailing the spiritual and artistic awakening of Stephen Dedalus, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics line. James Joyce's semi-autobiographical first novel explores the author's own love-hate relationship with Ireland through Stephen Dedalus, Joyce's literary alter ego. Dedalus yearns to be an artist, but must first overcome the aspects of Irish society, like school and the church, that he feels restrains his creativity and stifles his soul. Joyce's use of experimental literary techniques, including stream of consciousness, is on full display in his first novel, which he further develops in his later works, Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake.

He was acquitted by the Sixth Correctional Court of the Seine Tribunal and condemned by puritans for the themes of adultery, criticism of the clergy, and the bourgeoisie. - Abstract
In March 1917, Book 4 the willing and unwilling participants of the Russian Revolution try to make sense of their next steps amidst unraveling chaos. One of the masterpieces of world literature, The Red Wheel is Nobel prize–winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's multivolume epic work about the Russian Revolution told in the form of a historical novel. March 1917—the third node—chronicles the mayhem, day by day, of the Russian Revolution. Book 4 presents, for the first time in English, the conclusion of this four-volume revolutionary saga. The action of Book 4 is set during March 23–31, 1917. Book 4 portrays a cast of thousands in motion and agitation as every stratum of Russian society—the army on the front lines, the countryside, the Volga merchants, the Don Cossacks, the Orthodox Church—is racked by the confusing new reality. Soldiers start to fraternize across trenches with the enemy. The Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, the emperor's uncle, arrives at military headquarters to assume the supreme command but is promptly dismissed by the new Provisional Government. Even this government holds no power, for at every step it is cowed and hemmed in by a self-proclaimed and unaccountable Executive Committee acting in the name of the Soviets—councils of workers and soldiers. Yet the Soviets themselves are divided—on whether to call for an end to the war or for its continuation, on whether to topple the Provisional Government or to let it try to govern. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, Lenin quietly dictates his own terms to the German General Staff, setting the stage for his return to Russia.

If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something. In this volume that most heinous of crimes is explored and dissected by the minds of our classic authors who show that the taking of another's life in print is so real that the possibility arises that they have carried out this deed in reality. - Abstract
Occult and Supernatural fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that exploits or is centered on supernatural themes, often contradicting naturalist assumptions of the real world. In its broadest definition, supernatural fiction overlaps with examples of weird fiction, horror fiction, vampire literature, ghost story, and fantasy. Elements of supernatural fiction can be found in writing from the genre of science fiction. Amongst academics, readers and collectors, however, supernatural fiction is often classed as a discrete genre defined by the elimination of'horror','fantasy', and elements important to other genres. The one genre supernatural fiction appears to embrace in its entirety is the traditional ghost story. - Abstract
Twenty-eight-year-old Dorothy Hare leads a life of drudgery and self-abnegation in the house of her father, the rector of Knype Hill, helping him stave off his creditors and making costumes for fund-raising events. When, after being invited to dinner by Mr Warburton, a local atheist and libertine, she is glimpsed in his arms by the village gossip, Mrs Semprill, Dorothy suffers a breakdown and, struck by amnesia, embarks on journey that will see her join a group of vagrants, pick hops in the fields of Kent, stay in a hotel for “working girls” and sleep rough on the streets of London. Perhaps the most experimental among his writings, A Clergyman's Daughter, first published in 1935, is Orwell's second work of fiction – and one that, in its depiction of a protagonist who rebels against and is ultimately vanquished by the society that oppresses her, is a clear prefiguration of later novels such as Keep the Aspidistra Flying and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

- Abstract
Matthew Phipps Shiell was born in Montserrat in the West Indies on the 21st July 1865 and was believed to be illegitimate. He was educated at Harrison College, Barbados before moving to Englsand in 1885 to work as a teacher and translator. He soon began to write and published a series of short stories in The Strand magazine and other periodicals. Some of his works were as a writer for hire and it seems probable that even his first novel ‘The Rajah's Sapphire'(1896) was one of these.Perhaps his best-known work was ‘The Purple Cloud'(1901) and it is still considered an important early work of British science fiction. His first marriage to the Parisian-Spaniard, Carolina Garcia Gomez in 1898 provided him a muse for a character in ‘Cold Steel'(1900) and several short stories. They separated around 1903 and his daughter was taken to Spain after Lina died the following year. Money seemed to be at the heart of the marriage's problems. Shiel, like many writers wanted to write literature but his finances needed more commercial fare. With his more artistic efforts failing to provide he collaborated with Louis Tracy on a series of romantic mystery novels. In 1902, Shiel published in book form ‘The Weird o'It'which he described as a'true Bible or Holy Book'for modern times and its attempt to present'Christianity in a radical way.'Soon after Shiel turned his pen to contemporary themes with an historical novel about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. But he faced declining sales and tried to boost them by returning to a previous success ‘The Yellow Danger'. These efforts failed to capture any meaningful sales. By 1914 Shiel was in prison for'indecently assaulting and carnally knowing'his 12-year-old de facto stepdaughter. He served sixteen months of hard labour.Over the next decade Shiel wrote five plays, dabbled in radical politics and translated pamphlets for the Workers Socialist Federation. In 1919, he married Esther Lydia Jewson. The marriage lasted a decade but fell apart over his sexual interest in and possible abuse of his wife's young female relatives. Financially life was difficult, but he was helped in 1931 to obtain a Civil List pension despite his criminal record. Shiel published 25 novels, several collections of short stories, essays poems and plays. M P Sheil died on the 17th February 1947. He was 81.

- Abstract
Móric Jókay de Ásva was born on the 18th February 1825 in Komárom, then in the Kingdom of Hungary but now part of Slovakia.Due to his timid and delicate constitution he was educated at home until the age of 10 and then sent away to complete his studies at the Calvinist college at Pápa.At 12 his father died, and he was pushed to honour him by replicating his career as a lawyer. He studied hard and completed the curriculum at Kecskemét and Pest. He won his first case as a newly graduated lawyer. But he found a career in law to be dull and, encouraged by the positive reaction to his first play, he moved to Pest in 1845. There he published, first in a newspaper, and then as a novel ‘Hétköznapok'(‘Working Days'). It was acclaimed as a masterpiece. To add to his promise he was appointed as the editor of Életképek, the leading Hungarian journal. In 1848 he married the actress, Róza Laborfalvi. That same year Europe was awash with revolutions and Jókai, a moderate Liberal, enthusiastically supported the nationalist cause and its decision to depose the Habsburg dynasty. The attempt failed. He was now classed as a political suspect and threw himself into his literary career, writing dozens of novels, many of them masterpieces, stories, essays and the like. In total he wrote several hundred volumes, many of them in the local Magyar language which helped arrest its declining relevance in society.By 1867 the political temperature had cooled, and he entered parliament as well as becoming the editor a government journal he had founded. His skills were much admired and helped the government navigate through several difficult matters. His wife died in 1886 but although grief-stricken he continued to work and to write. In 1897 the king appointed him a member of the upper house. Two years later he caused a minor scandal by marrying the young 20-year-old actress, Bella Nagy. At the time he was 74.Mór Jókai died in Budapest on the 5th May 1904. He was 79.

-
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Jack London, Ambrose Bierce, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Jack London, and Ambrose Bierce
- Abstract
Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author's brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens'across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author? The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature. Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something. In this volume our classic authors from decades past look forwards into the future in their many ways. Their stories predict and expect many things. Intriguingly they interlace Sci-Fi with flavours and themes of other genres creating weird and wonderful stories that hold our attention with each turn of the page and fascinate our minds with their premise and execution.
