This book centralizes the importance of using culturally relevant models within health promoting schools (HPS) to promote the participation of Black students. In current HPS models Black students are often overlooked. The author presses beyond the mainstream, science-focused research on HPS to grapple with issues of power, prejudice, and oppression and focus on the social determinants of health. By focusing on social constructs as a constraint to Black students'wellbeing (rather than only disease), chapters present a multidimensional whole-school intervention aimed at comprehensively bridging the empowerment gap between Black students and historically privileged students.

This book shows how creative methods, drawing on innovative arts-based and design-based approaches, can be employed in health education contexts. It takes a very broad view of ‘health education', considering it as applying not only in school settings but across the lifespan, and as including physical education and sexuality education as well as public health campaigns, health activist initiatives and programmes designed for training educators and health professionals. The chapters outline a series of case studies contributed by leaders in the field, describing projects using a wide variety of creative methods conducted in a variety of global contexts. These include a rich constellation of arts-based and design-based methods and artefacts: sculptures, dance, walking and other somatic movement, diaries, paintings, drawings, zines, poems and other creative writing, body maps, collages, stories, films, photographs, theatre performances, soundscapes, potions, rock gardens, brainstorming, debates, secret ballots, murals and graffiti walls. There are no rules or guidelines outlined in these contributions about ‘how to do'creative approaches to health education. However, the methods in the case studies the authors describe are explained in detail so that they can be adopted or re-invented in other contexts. More importantly, these contributions provide inspiration. They demonstrate what can be done in the field of health education (however it is defined) to go beyond the often stultifying and conventional boundaries it has set for itself. Creative Approaches to Health Education demonstrates that creative approaches can be used to inspire those working and teaching in health education and their publics to think and do otherwise as well as advance health education research and pedagogies into new, exciting and provocative directions. It will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in education and health-related fields who want to explore and experiment with creative methods and craftivism in applied inquiry.

This book presents an international perspective on health education and specifically the influence that context has on this aspect of education. The focus includes both formal and non-formal health education and the factors that impact upon its effectiveness, particularly in non-Western and non-English-speaking contexts (i.e., outside the UK, USA, Australia, NZ, etc.). Welcome or not, most citizens in Western countries are unable to go through a day without receiving a dose of health information. This book examines the ways in which ordinary people locate and digest the amount of health information available today, focusing on the unexplored'middle'place of human and technical mediators.

The Research in Participatory Education Network (RIPEN) was initiated by the Research Programme for Environmental and Health Education at the Danish School of Education, University of Aarhus, in 2003. It embraces a broad spectrum of researchers, scholars, students, and practitioners of participatory education, working in or from Europe, North America, Africa, and Australasia. Given the international scope of the network and the range of interests it now has, as initiators and early participants in the network the editorial team invited RIPEN to discuss what a critical perspective on participatory approaches to education might mean for education and the environment, health and sustainability, and how network members might research and substantiate their claims and ar guments. Following the introductory chapter on the scope of this collection, 19 chapters illustrate the contributors'responses to that invitation. Our focus on critical perspectives was prompted by earlier work by Majid Rahnema in Wolfgang Sachs's (1992), Development Dictionary. Critiquing concepts of participation in a volume that set out to stimulate cultural, historical, and anth- pological debate on the key concepts of development, Rahnema (p. 126) wrote: Participation, which is also a form of intervention, is too serious and ambivalent a matter to be taken lightly, or reduced to an amoeba word lacking any precise meaning, or a slogan, or fetish, or for that matter, only an instrument or methodology.

This book brings together recent international scholarship on the links between education and health, and recent research evidence evaluating the processes and outcomes of health promoting schools initiatives. The book arises out of the Education and Health in Partnership conference, which took place in Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands in September 2002. The key aims of the conference were to focus on effective partnership working for health in schools and to consider the evidence base for health promoting schools programmes. A significant outcome of the conference was the Egmond Agenda, which outlines the principal components for success in establishing health promoting schools.Contributors from across Europe, the United States, South Africa and Australia present findings from national health promoting school projects, with a particular emphasis on the promotion of mental health.The volume will be of interest to all education and health professionals interested in the contributions of schools in promoting health, empowerment, action competence and wellbeing of young people.
