The foundation of this framework is a collaboration between schools, communities, and families, which calls for support from educational boards and local governments. Following international tragedies like the Turkey-Syria earthquake of 2023, as well as the ever-changing difficulties posed by climate change, DCRE has to be given priority immediately. Our book proposes a comprehensive strategy that includes governance, capacity building, education in schools and the community, and technology integration. Our insights, analyses, and practical policy suggestions are based on multidisciplinary research and worldwide case studies, with the goal of strengthening resilience and cultivating a generation committed to sustainability. 'This book is a first approach to the meaning of historical-critical pedagogy. The process of elaborating on this pedagogical current is underway, with contributions from different scholars. As for me, I am engaged in a long-range research project, conducted at an irregular pace, with no deadline to finish; an investigation that aims to trace the course of education from its remote origins, guided by the concept of'mode of production'. It is a matter of explaining how changes in the forms of production of human existence have historically generated new forms of education, which, in turn, influenced the process of transforming the corresponding mode of production. This work is developed from studies about the principles of the Christian Lutheran education and the administration of confessional schools in the context of the pedagogic ideas in the south of Brazil (1824-1997). This subject is of general interest, as it can be verified by the selection of articles published in the magazines of the Lutheran Churches in Brazil. This administration encompasses the director, the professor, and the parents, so that they may work together in search for a clear view of the mission, that is, the meaning of the existence of a confessional school. The aims of this research is to clarify questions in the History of Education, as well as in the administration of private and confessional schools. The following problem is raised: What are the Christian principles and the pedagogic tendencies and approaches which orient the administration of Lutheran confessional schools in south Brazil (1824-1997)? A survey of the publications of IELB (Igreja Evangélica Luterana do Brasil) and of IECLB (Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana do Brasil), from 1824 to 1997. The year of 1824 was chosen because that year is considered, because of the German immigration, as the beginning of the arrival of the Lutheran ideas in Brazil. Max Weber?s comprehensive method is used because is adequate for the analysis. One may affirm that the social action management in a Lutheran confessional school continues to be the quest to make the Christian principles concrete.

This book explores an under-researched but vital part of education: the first year at primary/elementary school. The work shows that children's progress varies enormously from school to school, class to class and child to child. This variation is important because the more progress that children make in that first year of school, the higher their academic attainment at the end of compulsory schooling. The iPIPS (international Performance Indicators in Primary Schools) project, upon which this book is based, has been able to provide deeper insights into some of the key issues within and across different contexts whilst highlighting new and some ongoing issues. Despite all the work there remain unanswered or new puzzling issues which are also explored. We need to know how to improve the education at that stage and, more broadly, we need greater clarity about when children should be taught to read and be introduced to formal arithmetic, in other words, when they should start school. We also need to be clearer about whether, when and how young children should be assessed. The book will suggest some answers but it will raise important questions and dilemmas for which we do not, as yet, have answers.

This book presents how neoliberal trends, as reflected in the grouplised school structure, affect teachers'professional learning and daily practice, and discusses how teacher agency is enabled and constrained at both individual and collective levels.The author interviewed teachers and administrators from eight different grouplised schools. He argues that the neoliberal trends in high-stakes accountability largely constrained teacher agency. School grouplisation was generally top-down, and a bottom-up structure is needed to support teachers'professional growth. Collective agency and administrator support could protect students against the neoliberal trends in education by enabling teachers to make conscious, moral decisions and take actions in their daily practice. He further identifies principles of invoking collective agency among teachers and proposes suggestions for educational reform implementation in neoliberal contexts.Policymakers, school administrators and teachers interested in grouplised schools and collective agency may find this book insightful.

This book offers critical perspectives on global literacies, connecting research, theory, and practice. An emerging concept in the literacy field, many scholars agree on the need for students to develop global literacies, yet few agree on a widely accepted definition. Based on a synthesis of the literature, the editors formulate a definition of global literacies with four dimensions, including: literacy as a human right in all nations around the world; critical reading and creation of multimodal texts about global issues; intercultural communication and reciprocal collaboration with globally diverse others; and transformative action for social and environmental justice that traverses borders. Using a decolonising framework, the book interrogates the diversity of migrant experiences in the global South and North.The book brings together researchers and practitioners from education, childhood studies, sociology, and linguistics to debate and theorise key methodological and empirical issues in migrant children's experiences through education. It focuses on how diverse forms of global mobilities are key to transforming educational experiences of children and considers the interplay of class, race, gender, geography, and learning settings. By doing so, the book uncovers particular challenges for addressing sustainable development goals relating to education and inclusive development. Diversifying the study of migration and development, the book challenges the Eurocentrism of the discipline and contributes to ongoing efforts to liberate the field from labels and discourses that further marginalise migrant children.Using an intersectional and decolonising approach to address an important gap in the diversity of migrant experiences, the book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and students in the field of migration studies, sociology of education, intercultural education, and international development.

This book focuses on cartographies as epistemology and visual strategy, highlighting three major axes: corporeal, affective, and nomadic learning. Based on the onto-episte-methodological and ethical displacement from reductive approaches, the book emphasizes new ways of understanding arts, research, teaching and learning processes at the university and beyond. Contributions highlight practices focused on dialogue, sharing, readings and philosophical discussions which allow educators to move away from what is typically thought of as ‘correct', and reinforce the importance of a decolonized approach to learning and knowledge, understanding the (re)search process as an imperfect journey in becoming.

This volume contributes to the advancement of comparative education in the world, more specifically in expanding understandings of the discourse of comparative education vis-à-vis educational transformation. Throughout the text, three critical elements that reflect comparative education as an open, inconclusive discourse come up: (1) There is sufficient pedagogical space for dissonance. It is always possible to compare one's own authenticity with the epistemological position others hold dear and argue for. (2) The contributions in this book should not be read as absolute pieces of writing as that would undermine the flexible nature of education. It is important to point out that the opinions of the authors are temporary moments of attachment to persuasive claims. However, these claims are not cast in stone as new views continue to emerge from epistemological (re)positioning. (3) Our own reading of the book corroborates our interest in comparative education as a continuous discourse in the making. The contributions of scholars at the third symposium organized by WCCES provided a platform for them to pursue their knowledge interests. In addition, these interests have and will or ought never to be homogenous for that would be incommensurate with a defensible practice of comparative education.

This book describes and analyses experiences of teaching and learning language, culture and literature based on telecollaboration, an approach that creates interactions between groups of learners from different countries through the integration of a series of virtual and intercultural collaborative tasks to the curricula of undergraduate and graduate courses. The experiences analyzed in this volume come from two telecollaborative projects developed by the São Paulo State University (UNESP), in Brazil, with universities from other countries: the Brazilian Virtual Exchange (BRaVE) Program and the Teletandem Brasil Project. The BRaVE Program aims at fostering an online collaborative learning modality that promotes intercultural contact and the exchange of ideas by connecting Brazilian undergraduate or graduate students with students from different higher education institutions around the world. The Teletandem Brasil Project is based on a mode of telecollaboration (teletandem)that creates a virtual, collaborative and autonomous context for learning foreign languages in which two students help each other to learn their own languages or a language of proficiency. They do so by using the text, voice and webcam image resources, and by adopting the three principles of tandem learning: autonomy, reciprocity, and separate use of both languages. Language, Culture and Literature in Telecollaboration Contexts will be of interest to both educational researchers and teachers as it presents, on the one hand, an innovative tool to promote the democratization of foreign language learning; and, on the other hand, discusses how telecollaborative projects can contribute to the training of language and literature teachers.

With a strong focus on decoloniality and social justice, this volume brings together critical theories, concepts, and practices on TESOL from multiple Brazilian perspectives. The chapters showcase the work of teachers and teacher educators in confronting sociopolitical issues in Brazil, including in the domains of democracy, language education, and knowledge production, as well as prevailing issues within TESOL itself. Contributions stem from an eclectic range of analytical orientations that reflect ontological and epistemological diversity while demonstrating why, where, and how TESOL is done in Brazil. This text explores how the dynamics of globalization and privatization have influenced State policy and impacted education reform in Honduras. It makes the argument that understanding education reform in post-colonial contexts requires that scholars go beyond a surface-level description of such trends as privatization to consider, in addition, the ways that the logics, practices, and relationships that characterized colonialism continue to be embedded in the apparatus of modern States. The first part of the volume documents historical trends and the evolution of privatisation in Honduras, while the second part explicitly engages in an extended discussion of State theory, before shifting to present a framework for depicting how these logics are the foundational layer upon which states and global governance have been constructed. The framework draws upon scholarship from political economy, world systems, and post-colonialism to depict the'ethos of privatization'at the core of post-colonial States, wherein what drives the system is private benefit, in the interest of individuals and their networks, but not in the interest of those outside the State. Applying this unique framework to the case of Honduras and offering empirical analysis of the Honduran education sector, the changing role and priorities of the State, and the increasing involvement of international organizations, NGOs, and private actors in the provision of education, the text increases understanding of how State theory interacts with broader global dynamics to impact education. Sustainability is now a widely spread concept, and much progress has been achieved since the 1970s, when it started to be widely discussed. At present, many international organizations and scientists are active in implementing sustainable development as a whole and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular. Nevertheless, the main research agenda is being led by some countries, providing a good opportunity for other nations and regions which have not yet been so active, to bring their viewpoints to the global discussion. One of these regions is Latin America. Consistent with the need for more cross-sectorial and cross-cultural interactions among the various stakeholders working in the field of sustainability in Latin America and beyond, this book pursues two main aims: a) to provide research institutions, universities, NGOs, government agencies, and enterprises from the region with an opportunity to present their works in the field of sustainability and b) to document and promote ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of sustainability projects, especially successful initiatives and good practice across the Latin America region. Last but not least, a further aim of the book is to present methodological approaches and experiences deriving from case studies and projects, which aim to show how sustainability may be enhanced in practice.

This book consists of stories of struggles in science education presented by a network of science educators working in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Britain, and the United States. The common goal of these educators is to produce more socially/ecologically just models and practices of science education. The book considers and reworks the key-terms of current social justice: agency, realism, justice, and power. Its first section explores re-inhabiting science in the quest for more just worlds including reterritorializing science within emergent theories of critical realism, engaging citizens activists with corporate science, and challenging neoliberalism and the forces that organize (structure) knowledge. The second section redefines praxis of science education itself through nuanced explorations of agency, decolonialism, and justice in ways that emphasize complexity, hybridity, ambivalence, and contradiction. The stories of this international group capture individual and collective efforts, motivated by a persistent sense that science and science education matter for questions of justice.

In this book, the authors'post-capitalist approach to change focuses less on what we need to dismantle and more on what educators and activists are building in its place.
