This book layouts historic and future perspectives at the introduction of technology into education systems: On the one hand, the book attempts to explain why despite numerous attempts, technology has struggled to integrate successfully into the education system for over a century; on the other hand, it explores whether this trend will persist in the foreseeable future, questioning if emerging technologies, like virtual reality or Gen-AI will ever be embraced by education systems worldwide, and introducing a hypothesis that these technologies will become inevitable so that education systems will have a little choice in adopting them. The underlying perspective is that education systems need to prepare for this new future and better start doing so now. This book seeks to extend perspectives on professional identity in education. Chapters consider the notion of expertise, the impact of managerial approaches, the importance of communities of practice, and the effects of increasingly marketised approaches.By using narratives, the book opens up a ‘conversation'about this important topic. Educators and leaders from a variety of settings will explore their professional experiences and the impact these have had on forming values in the professional role. By drawing on personal experience, individual authors will consider some of the challenges they have encountered as part of identity formation. The significance of organisational cultures is discussed throughout the book and explores the ways in which individual autonomy is both threatened and claimed. Issues discussed include the frequent changes imposed through government initiatives and the social perception of education professionals when compared to other professional roles. Since the first English translation of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970), critical breakthroughs in education have been diffcult to establish and flourish. In turn, dismantling and rebuilding these systems are not a destination, but a dialectical practice negotiated across time and space to continually challenge the hegemony that aims to increase the vulnerability of those already at risk of violence. But just as these ideologies have invaded so many of our social environments, we must disrupt these systems with our own counter-narration to expose the contradictions that sustain epistemological obedience and education that limits the possibilities for further change in society. This book champions phenomenology's place in networked learning theory, research, and practice. The book illuminates and showcases something of the powerful richness, depth, and novel insights offered by phenomenological perspectives on human experience to invoke a fundamental rethinking of experience in networked learning. It also signals the broader learning technology community to acknowledge and engage with these perspectives. The editors and authors have collaborated to bring a renewed focus upon the human facet of networked learning. As our world becomes more digitally enmeshed, infiltrated, and contested, the need to investigate and convey, at maximum fidelity, the lived experience of learners, teachers, and other stakeholders in education becomes paramount. Through phenomenological inquiry, we disclose the complex dance between the human and the technical, spotlighting how individuals engage, navigate, and find meaning within virtual yet embodied landscapes. This book examines the impact of neoliberalism on the academisation of the English school system. The growth of multi-academy trusts (MATs) has been a significant change in the English educational landscape. While some schools have been forced to join MATs, many of them have made this change because their governing board has chosen to do so. The author of this book examines the reasons why many governing bodies have still decided to join a MAT, despite numerous controversies linked to them. He applies the theory that neoliberalism perpetuates itself by creating crises which require more neoliberal policy solutions. Using three case-study schools, the extent to which various crises in the English education system have encouraged governing boards to join MATs is studied. The book will be of interest to academics and students of education policy, schooling, and the sociology of education.

This book is a curated collection of international chapters focused on the reform of K-12 schools. Three key, yet different cultural, economic, and political settings are highlighted: Australia, the UK, and the US. Within their own context, each author details the required reforms that would maximize learning for all students. The intersectionalities of factors such a race, gender, class, ethnicity, disability, language, and economic inequities, are interrogated for their impact on the efficacy of reform strategies. Authors explore both a range of dysfunctional factors which have historically limited the efficacy of school reform initiatives, and detail a variety of forward-looking and cutting edge alternative reforms. Thus, this text can serve to stimulate a much need dialogue about the reconceptualization of schools in the future. Moreover, the cross-cultural analysis can focus this dialogue on both the similarities and differences in varying cultural settings.

A number of scholars within the social sciences and the humanities have elaborated on the cultural and psychological dimensions of living through social, economic and political crises. Still, developments during the last decade have created an awareness that something fundamental of the human condition is at stake, especially for the young generation growing up today, with a devastating environmental crisis, globalization, large scale migration, the impact of digitalization and so forth. The consequence has been increased polarization between nations, communities, and people, where the dialogue for human understanding seems to vanish. The basic rationale underlying this book is that education is a key social system where learning to take different perspectives, to stimulate dialogue and intersubjectivity are fundamental for social and cultural development. We bring together scholars from North-America and Europe, but with relevance on a global scale. The four sections in the book cover theoretical explorations referring to the power and generativity of the writings of the Norwegian scholar Ragnar Rommetveit (section 1), diverse chapters and examples on the societal conditions for dialogue and the role of education (section 2), empirical illustration on the role of digital technologies (section 3), and micro-analytical studies of learning dialogues at home, in kindergarten and school (section 4).

Ausgehend von der theoretischen Grundannahme, dass Sprachtherapie als Bestandteil von Bildung anzusehen ist, werden Interaktionen zwischen Sprachtherapeut•innen und Kindern im vorschulischen Bereich über einen ethnographischen Zugang untersucht. Die zentrale Frage der Arbeit lautet, inwieweit Kindern in diesem frühkindlichen Bildungskontext Teilhabe ermöglicht wird. Die Autorin kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Praktiken der Sprachtherapie von einer starken Machtasymmetrie gekennzeichnet sind, die die Sprachprofessionellen in Form von fortlaufenden Evaluationen und dem Einfordern von formal festgelegten monolingualen Kurzantworten aufrechterhalten. This volume introduces sociology as a foundational discipline of education. Education is a central structuring mechanism in shaping societies, making it a core focus for sociology. This book chronicles the school envisioned by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1933 to serve Arthurdale, the New Deal government-created community in north-central West Virginia. Arthurdale was founded to house unemployed miners and their families and provide them with opportunities to receive healthcare and obtain gainful employment. Roosevelt had a particular interest in the education of children, feeling that education and social life were profoundly intertwined within a community. With that in mind, in 1934, she hired Elsie Ripley Clapp—an educator and leader in the Progressive Education movement—to design and implement the school, as well as oversee the social life of Arthurdale as a whole. In addition to covering the Arthurdale School's birth, life, and dissolution, Rosenberg discusses how the lessons of the school might serve the culture of education today, especially as an element of a comprehensive approach to community revitalization.

The book provides a dynamic, cross-sectional, multidisciplinary perspective and dialogue to illuminate the challenges humans face in their interactions with data in their individual postdigital contexts in local communities. It offers unique insights from real cases, collaborations, and projects to extend existing academic theories and frameworks, applied to human data interactions, disadvantage, and digital skills. The book takes the novel approach of establishing co-authorship between cross-sector practitioners from the wider community (such as local authorities, councils, policy makers, small businesses, charities, education and skills providers, and other stakeholders) with international academics and researchers who write about humans, digital skills, and data. This develops an enabling cross-sector environment throughout the book that not only furthers broader understandings concerning data, disadvantage and digital skills in postdigital society, but also shares a template to support others who may wish to adopt this approach to co-authorship and knowledge exchange. The book revisits the Human Data Interaction (HDI) framework (Mortier, Haddadi, Henderson, McAuley, and Crowcroft 2014) through many diverse cross-sectoral perspectives. These are co-authored under the HDI framework's key tenets of: agency, legibility, negotiability and resistance. These tenets form the main sections of the book, with chapters examining these concepts through both interdisciplinary academic literature and cross-sector dialogue with individuals and agencies from the wider community who work with diverse and often disadvantaged groups.

Through examining school uniform policies, the editors and their authors highlight the embodied choices that contribute to a socio-materialist understanding of democracy and social justice. This volume focuses on the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), education, to look at sustainability from various angles with the purpose of challenging preconceptions about what sustainable education might entail and how it should be conducted. To this end, the book assembles scholars from various research fields and disciplines, who are willing to be at the cutting edge regarding sustainability and education on all levels with students in the ages of 6-15. Through this approach, the text points towards a “wild pedagogy” in line with post-sustainable thinking. This involves agency and the role of nature itself as a co-educator, and promotes cultural changes, and explorative processes of finding “the wild” – the unknown, and complexity in nature – and thus of challenging the human need for control. This approach is also, in line with the 2030 Agenda, an attempt to move from advocating predetermined behavioural change to embracing a pluralistic perspective on sustainability, based on holistic views on education. Vor dem Hintergrund eines expandierenden Privatschulsektors einerseits und der Konzeption der für allen gemeinsamen Grundschule andererseits untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit, ob private Grundschulen in Deutschland Bildungsungleichheiten verstärken. Betrachtet werden einerseits die Selektivität der Privatschulwahl und andererseits die Effekte, welche der Besuch einer privaten Grundschule auf die Kompetenzentwicklung hat. Beide Aspekte werden auf Basis von Daten des Nationalen Bildungspanels untersucht. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass die Wahl einer privaten Grundschule insbesondere in städtischen Gebieten und in Ostdeutschland vom Bildungsniveau und vom kulturellen Kapital der Eltern abhängt. Wird die soziale Selektivität der Privatschulwahl berücksichtigt, zeigt sich kein Effekt privater Beschulung auf die Entwicklung von Lese- und Mathematikkompetenzen.

This book provides a narrative account of the experiences of twenty former scholarship students from historically disadvantaged communities who attended elite public and private secondary schools. It draws on in-depth, one-on-one semi-structured interviews conducted with former scholarship recipients who were between the ages of 19 and 24 years at the time of the interviews. Various themes are explored, specifically focusing on elite schooling in relation to the experiences and navigational practices of the scholarship recipients and the adjustments that they felt they needed to make in order to fit into the elite school space.The book analyses and discusses the reflective experiences of students who were awarded a scholarship to attend an elite secondary school. It reveals that accepting the gift of a scholarship is far more complex, multi-layered, and at times harsh and even painful for the individual recipients than is possibly realized by those involved in thispractice. This book contributes to academic educational debates within the sociology of education, elite schools and schooling in the post-apartheid South African context.

This book examines education transfer, specifically focusing on pedagogic transfer, and analyzes what happens when lesson study is introduced into foreign contextual settings. Lesson study, a professional development approach that originated in Japan 150 years ago, has been widely considered one of the best practices for collaborative professional development. There is an underlying assumption behind education transfer that when “best practice” is transferred to another country, it will generate a similar effect and improve schooling quality. Since pedagogic practice is socially constructed, the best practice in one setting may not be meaningful in another contextual setting. This book makes a unique contribution to the field of comparative education by offering a sociological examination of why pedagogic transfer often fails to bring expected benefits. It is comprised of three parts. Part I, ”Pedagogic Transfer and Lesson study,” provides contextualized analysis of lesson study in Japan and abroad and presents how the meaning of practice is always reinterpreted against the local educational context. Part II presents a sociological analysis of Indonesian teachers'practice based on ethnographic fieldwork. It conceptually analyses the nature of the teacher community and their practice and is presented as “teacher strategies.” The concept showed that teacher culture and practice are not fixed but constantly negotiated within the institutional setting.Part III, “Sociological Understanding of Pedagogic Transfer,” builds on the analyses in Part I and II and provides a theoretical understanding of the issue of pedagogic transfer. Professional responsibilities of teachers, collegiality, and teaching expertise in Japan and Indonesia are compared to understand how the meaning of lesson study was reconstructed in the Indonesian setting. This book examines the consequences of educational segregation from the perspective of social cohesion.
