- Abstract
Networked learning is learning in which information and communications technology (ICT) is used to promote connections: between one learner and other learners; between learners and tutors; between a learning community and its learning resources. Networked learning is an area which has great practical and theoretical importance. It is a rapidly growing area of educational practice, particularly in higher education and the corporate sector. This volume brings together some of the best research in the field, and uses it to signpost some directions for future work. The papers in this collection represent a major contribution to our collective sense of recent progress in research on networked learning. In addition, they serve to highlight some of the largest or most important gaps in our understanding of students'perspectives on networked learning, patterns of interaction and online discourse, and the role of contextual factors. The range of topics and methods addressed in these papers attests to the vitality of this important field of work. More significant yet is the complex understanding of the field that they combine to create. In combination, they help explain some of the key relationships between teachers'and learners'intentions and experiences, the affordances of text-based communications technologies and processes of informed and intelligent educational change.

- Abstract
This book follows on previous works addressing sustainable development research in the Asia-Pacific region. It mainly focuses on India, a country currently facing immense challenges in the form of climate change, rapid urbanisation, and population pressures in its journey to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Expecting to surpass China in terms of population in the near future, India needs to develop its own solutions in order to uphold its commitments under the Paris Agreement. This book makes a contribution in that direction by presenting case studies on various aspects of the built environment, from education to managing cities, procurement, and considerations for a circular economy. The papers gathered here offer a vital resource for government policymakers, educators, and current and future professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and expertise they need in order to overcome today's complex challenges in the built environment.

- Abstract
This book contains papers in the fields of Interactive, Collaborative, and Blended Learning; Technology-Supported Learning; Education 4.0; Pedagogical and Psychological Issues. With growing calls for affordable and quality education worldwide, we are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of post-secondary education and pedagogical practices. Higher education is undergoing innovative transformations to respond to our urgent needs. The change is hastened by the global pandemic that is currently underway. The 9th International Conference on Interactive, Collaborative, and Blended Learning: Visions and Concepts for Education 4.0 was conducted in an online format at McMaster University, Canada, from 14th to 15th October 2020, to deliberate and share the innovations and strategies. This conference's main objectives were to discuss guidelines and new concepts for engineering education in higher education institutions, including emerging technologies in learning; to debate new conference format in worldwide pandemic and post-pandemic conditions; and to discuss new technology-based tools and resources that drive the education in non-traditional ways such as Education 4.0. Since its beginning in 2007, this conference is devoted to new learning approaches with a focus on applications and experiences in the fields of interactive, collaborative, and blended learning and related new technologies. Currently, the ICBL conferences are forums to exchange recent trends, research findings, and disseminate practical experiences in collaborative and blended learning, and engineering pedagogy. The conference bridges the gap between ‘pure'scientific research and the everyday work of educators. Interested readership includes policymakers, academics, educators, researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, school teachers, industry-centric educators, continuing education practitioners, etc.

- Abstract
The Evaluative Study of Action Research presents all eight published papers as part of the six-year, global, Evaluative Study of Action Research (ESAR) in one volume. The study sought to enhance the academic rigour of Action Research (AR) and provide greater evidence of its impact. This research contained in this book shows, in a cohesive way, how the ESAR exemplifies original research incorporating new methodologies to create new knowledge. An Evaluative AR framework and indicators were created for initial qualitative data collection with six initial case studies using interviews, survey, documentary analysis, and Goal Attainment Scaling methods. The initial study was followed by a large-scale mixed method survey with 174 projects from across the globe. Almost all projects exhibited positive elements linked to AR precursors (focus clarification, stakeholder engagement, funding), processes (phased, planned yet flexible activity, data collection and analysis, ongoing collaboration and leadership), and outcomes/impacts (change, knowledge mobilisation and continuing action). The results of the ESAR, elaborated in this volume, offer important indications for how to create the sort of respectful engagement that is required for collective strength in solution based, innovative, change. This book will be a valuable resource for: action researchers throughout the world; postgraduate research students, academics and libraries; evaluators; and anyone in communities who wishes to know how to create sustainable change.

- Abstract
ITS 2000 is the fifth international conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The preceding conferences were organized in Montreal in 1988, 1992, and 1996. These conferences were so strongly supported by the international community that it was decided to hold them every two years. ITS'98 was organized by Carol Redfield and Valerie Shute and held in San Antonio, Texas. The program committee included members from 13 countries. They received 140 papers (110 full papers and 30 young researchers papers) from 21 countries. As with any international conference whose proceedings serve as a reference for the field, the program committee faced the demanding task of selecting papers from a particularly high quality set of submissions. This proceedings volume contains 61 papers selected by the program committee from the 110 papers submitted. They were presented at the conference, along with six invited lectures from well known speakers. The papers cover a wide range of subjects including architectures for ITS, teaching and learning strategies, authoring systems, learning environments, instructional designs, cognitive approaches, student modeling, distributed learning environments, evaluation of instructional systems, cooperative systems, Web based training systems, intelligent agents, agent based tutoring systems, intelligent multimedia and hypermedia systems, interface design, and intelligent distance learning.

- Abstract
The papers which make up this volume have for the most part emerged from the work of a team of young researchers based for varying periods at the Department of Educational Studies of the University of Oxford as part of an international network funded by the European Union. The network, known as PRESTiGE (Problems of Educational Standardisation and Transition in a Global Environment), involves teams at six European universities, each of which can only employ young researchers from Member States other than that in which it is situated. The Oxford part of PRESTiGE has been concerned with the interpretation, transmission and implementation of European Union education and training policy in four Member States: France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. As the leader of the Oxford team I had the good fortune to work with young researchers from Denmark, Germany, Greece, Sweden and Portugal. Their work is included here. So too are contributions from Jake Murdoch (a member of the Dijon team, based at the Université de Bourgogne) and Professor António Nóvoa, the leader of the Lisbon team. Together the papers (which we have allowed to overlap to some extent, so that each one can be read independently) represent a genuinely international collaborative effort to understand the intentions and the effects of EU education and training policy, and we hope that they will contribute to further discussion of the important issues that those with an interest in European co-operation and development will wish to pursue.

- Abstract
The question of inclusive education is one which many societies are attempting to address. It is a fundamentally serious and complex issue raising challenges that cover conceptual, organizational, pedagogical, curricular and socio-economic concerns and questions. In this edited collection of papers the reader is confronted with these challenges through, on the one hand, a critical informative analysis of some of the key existing ideas and, on the other, a series of alternative insights and questions requiring further exploration and debate. Adding to the overall qu- ity of the book is the much needed cross-cultural dimension in terms of insights, knowledge, understanding and difficult questions. This is an important book in which new research and interpretations are reported on and discussed. Overall, the papers provide a serious critique of such factors as: the limitations of existing definitions of inclusive education; the narrowness of the focus within which inclusive issues are too often presented; the negative impacts of marketisation, performativity and the standards agenda on the realisation of inclusive values and practice and the constraints of significant socio-economic inequalities and disadvantages within and between communities and schools. These raise serious questions concerning the extent to which schools can make a positive difference in the lives of many pupils.

- Abstract
This special edition of the Educational Communications and Technology Yearbook Series bears a title of “Learning Environment and Design: Current and Future Impact”. It provides a timely forum to share theoretical and practical insights in both the local and international contexts in response to the fact that new media and technologies have infiltrated and shaped the learning environments from mere physical spaces into multifaceted possibilities, impacting the ways individuals teach and learn. Designs of learning environments to harness technologies appropriately to engage learners better, as well as the roles of learners and educators play in this changing learning environment, are examples of important global issues in the discourse of the contemporary educational developments. Having gathered a diverse collection of research papers written by scholars and practitioners in the fields of education, communication and humanities across Asia, Australasia, Europe and the United States, this book gives readers a cross-cultural background on the developments of technological designs and educational practices, investigating areas in redefining of quality education; online learning and blended learning; new media in education; gamification, AI, and innovative learning technologies. Aimed to catalyze knowledge exchanges and provide fresh views on interdisciplinary research, the book sheds light on how emerging technologies can be adapted in the fields of education and communication, so as to facilitate the current and future designs of learning environments to improve learners'performances.

- Abstract
This book presents the status quo of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education, with a focus on China and the 17 Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs), including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia (the “17+1” cooperation mechanism, as an incubator for pragmatic trans-regions cooperation platform, created by China and the 17 CEECs). With recent advances in ICT in China and the CEECs, it has assumed increasingly important roles in education, including the improvement of the quality of teaching and learning, as well as the promotion of equity in education. The significant contribution of ICT in education is an enabler to achieving the goals of the “17+1 cooperation” mechanism between China and the CEECs, which has attracted considerable attention worldwide, given fresh impetus to cooperation between the two parties, and opened a new chapter in China-CEEC cooperation. The contributors, all of whom hail from these 18 countries, describe the state-of-the-art of ICT in education in their respective country, and focus on three major aspects, namely: the country profile, general status of education development, and ICT in education. In turn, leading experts in educational informatization research compare the situations in different countries. Taken together, the papers offer valuable insights for policymakers and educators on how to integrate ICT into educational processes, and on inter-regional cooperation with regard to ICT in education.

- Abstract
This volume follows the publication of Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences. This new book presents additional topics not discussed in the previous volume. It examines key topics such as partial credit analysis of data, common person linking, computing equating constants, investigating discrimination, evaluating dimensionality, how to better utilize Wright Maps, how to design tests and surveys using Rasch theory, and many more. The book includes activities which can be used to practice the theme of each chapter and to test the reader's understanding of Rasch techniques. Beginning and ending with a conversation between two students, each chapter provides clear step-by-step instructions as to how to conduct an analysis using the chapter theme. The chapters emphasize applications for the beginner learning Rasch and provide guidance for composing a write-up of an analysis for a presentation, paper, thesis or report. This book explores in detail many importantyet often rarely discussed topics in Rasch. With its easy-to-read language and engaging format it reaches a wide audience of scientists, clinicians, students, researchers and psychometricians, providing a valuable toolkit for practical users of Rasch analysis. – Dr. Eva Fenwick, Clinical Research Fellow, Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) Assistant Professor, Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore It is an easy to read book and provides immediate guidance for those wishing to conduct a Rasch analysis. The “conversations” between students in each chapter provides a welcome introduction to each topic. – Prof. Maik Walpuski, University Duisburg-Essen, GermanyThe lessons learned in their first book are extended by providing insightful demonstrations of some of the more complex concepts and techniques used in applying Rasch models. – Dr. Michael R. Peabody, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, Illinois, USAI am amazed with the ability of these authors to communicate complicated knowledge, and the ability to make this highly complicated knowledge accessible to new learners guiding every step of the way. Through this book we get important knowledge about techniques and the different areas of use for Rasch methods in the human sciences This is truly an important book for students and researchers. – Prof. Charlotte Ringsmose, Aalborg University, Denmark

- Abstract
Beat burnout with time-saving best practices for feedback For ELA teachers, the danger of burnout is all too real. Inundated with seemingly insurmountable piles of papers to read, respond to, and grade, many teachers often find themselves struggling to balance differentiated, individualized feedback with the one resource they are already overextended on—time. Matthew Johnson offers classroom-tested solutions that not only alleviate the feedback-burnout cycle, but also lead to significant growth for students. These time-saving strategies built on best practices for feedback help to improve relationships, ignite motivation, and increase student ownership of learning. Flash Feedback also takes teachers to the next level of strategic feedback by sharing: How to craft effective, efficient, and more memorable feedback Strategies for scaffolding students through the meta-cognitive work necessary for real revision A plan for how to create a culture of feedback, including lessons for how to train students in meaningful peer response Downloadable online tools for teacher and student use Moving beyond the theory of working smarter, not harder, Flash Feedback works deeper by developing practices for teacher efficiency that also boost effectiveness by increasing students'self-efficacy, improving the clarity of our messages, and ultimately creating a classroom centered around meaningful feedback.

- Abstract
In this compilation, the authors address how school staff can support excessively anxious adolescents. It is important that teachers are equipped with the knowledge to identify anxiety disorders in students given their increasing prevalence. An approach is presented with the goal of facilitating educational transformation for indigenous languages through research, with Afrikology as a compass for the agenda of decolonising the language of teaching and learning in an open distance and e-learning setting. Progress in Education. Volume 63 also sets out to develop an understanding of Taiwanese English language teachers'levels of intercultural sensitivity and their willingness to teach interculturally, as the English language is used as the medium of communication in a wide variety of international and intercultural settings. The general and developmental characteristics of students with visual impairment are described, and information regarding the educational processes of students with visual impairment is presented. A study is included which examines how to best support English learners as they develop as writers of opinion papers though a multiple case study in a 4th grade English as a second language classroom. The authors discuss the empirical results of novel tools in the context of writing in order to better understand the relationship between technology and writing instruction. The educational and psychological importance of fables for child development is highlighted, underlining how they, if used appropriately, can become valuable and effective didactic tools. Lastly, the authors highlight the typical challenges and deficiencies in information literacy knowledge, as well as skills that are recognized among undergraduate students. Opportunities to improve the information literacy of undergraduate students (particularly in cognitive levels) are also discussed.

- Abstract
In recent years, scholarly interest in Ancient Athens has been enlivened by spectacular archaeological discoveries. The new finds from the pre-Classical city called for a synoptic reassessment of the material remains, their interpretation and the previous methodological approaches, since the dense records of later historical phases had shaped the perception of Athens before the Persian Wars. Under theses premises, the International Workshop held at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in February 2017 invited its participants to rethink early Athens. The papers assembled in this volume aim to question traditional perspectives and offer a multidisciplinary framework for the discussion of archaeological, literary and epigraphical testimonia.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: A, University of Warwick (Institute of Education), course: MA Drama and Theatre Education, language: English, abstract: The teaching of foreign languages, and especially that of English as a Foreign Language, has undoubtedly undergone massive changes in Romania during the last decades. A general openness towards innovation and transformation is to be noticed in the post-revolutionary Romanian education system. The study of a foreign language is to be accompanied by elements of literature, culture and civilization, to which students are widely exposed. If, on the one hand, teenagers are encouraged to become active learners, teachers, on the other, are supposed to keep up with all major transformations and find the best way to help their students engage with their studies. My practical attempts to stimulate teenagers'involvement with the study of a different culture via literature have proved to me that drama is an extremely valuable method to be employed, as it is immediate and engaging, it allows for questions to be raised and thus it will infinitely enrich classroom discussion. It makes paths open out into roads not even thought about before, it makes written texts come alive, it colours perspectives and brings depth into our viewpoints. It contains in it the capacity to make us continuously (re)consider and (re)shape ourselves and the world that we share. The aim of this research paper is to bring into discussion a case study developed in a Romanian upper secondary school and observe what the theory it was inspired by looks like in a practical environment. Thus, the first chapter focuses on a variety of concepts such as cultural identity, the exploration of alternatives, as well as drama and literature as tools in the search for new, fresh perspectives. The second chapter discusses the paradigms that influenced my research design, the data gathering methods I employed for my specific purposes, problems encountered and practical considerations that were taken into account. I also see this chapter as the bridge linking the theory referred to (Chapter 1) and the practice it continuously informed and reshaped (Chapter 3). As a study, it is meant – at its turn – to open new perspectives towards the teaching of English literature. My hope is that it can be of any interest to my colleagues, or to anybody attempting to challenge the youth of today to listen carefully and purposefully to somebody else's stories.

- Abstract
Although computer-based tests (CBT) have been administered for many years, improvements in the speed and power of computers coupled with reductions in their cost have made large-scale computer delivery of tests increasingly feasible. CBT is now a common form of test delivery for licensure, certification, and admissions tests. Many large-scale, high-stakes testing programs have introduced CBT either as an option or as the sole means of test delivery. Although this movement to CBT has, to a great extent, been successful, it has not been without problems. Advances in psychometrics are required to ensure that those who rely on test results can have at least the same confidence in CBTs as they have in traditional forms of assessment. This volume stems from an ETS-sponsored colloquium in which more than 200 measurement professionals from eight countries and 29 states convened to assess the current and future status of CBT. The formal agenda for the colloquium was divided into three major segments: Test Models, Test Administration, and Test Analysis and Scoring. Each segment consisted of several presentations followed by comments from noted psychometricians and a break-out session in which presenters and discussants identified important issues and established priorities for a CBT research agenda. This volume contains the papers presented at the colloquium, the discussant remarks based on those papers, and the research agenda that was generated from the break-out sessions. Computer-Based Testing: Building the Foundation for Future Assessments is must reading for professionals, scholars, and advanced students working in the testing field, as well as people in the information technology field who have an interest in testing.

- Abstract
Identification of Learning Disabilities: Research to Practice is the remarkable product of a learning disabilities summit conference convened by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) in August 2001 and the activities following that summit. Both the conference and this book were seen as important preludes to congressional reauthorization of the historic Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) scheduled for 2002 and subsequent decision making surrounding implementation. The OSEP conference brought together people with different perspectives on LD (parents, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers) and resulted in this book, which examines the research on nine key issues concerning the identification of children with learning disabilities. Coverage includes alternative responses to treatment, classification approaches, processing deficit models, and approaches to decision making.Chapter Structure-- Each of the first nine chapters is organized around a lengthy, issue-oriented paper, which presents the most current research on that topic. These primary papers are then followed by four respondent papers that reflect a variety of viewpoints on the topic.Summarizing Chapter -- A small group of researchers (listed in the final chapter) dedicated an enormous amount of time to summarizing the research and developing key consensus statements regarding the identification of children with learning disabilities. Their work is sure to have a tremendous impact on future discussions in this area.Expertise-- The following well-known scholars have helped summarize the vast amount of research presented in this book as well as the consensus statements derived therefrom: Lynne Cook, Don Deshler, Doug Fuchs, Jack M. - Abstract
This special issue was motivated by the move from research to operations for computerized delivery and scoring of complex constructed response items. The four papers presented provide an overview of the state of the art for such applications. The issue begins by describing the range of computer delivered formats and computerized scoring systems that are currently in use. The remaining papers provide three views of validity in the context of computer delivered and scoring assessments. It is hoped that together, these articles will provide the reader with both an appreciation of the state of the art for computer-automated scoring systems, as well as a perspective on the issues that must be considered and the evidence that must be collected to produce automated scoring systems that allow for valid inference.
