In the twenty years since Ray Land and Erik Meyer published their first paper on Threshold Concepts, there has been a steady stream of papers mulling over their original suggestions that learning, far from proceeding in an orderly fashion, is instead a process of struggle – perhaps alienation and confusion – that puts students in a troublesome liminal ‘in-between'state. As their understanding develops, liminality gives way to transformational insight whereby a whole field of study comes, often quite abruptly, into focus. There is a gain but often also a loss: in this new world, old certainties, assumptions and even aspects of our identity can be left by the wayside. Threshold Concepts in the Moment is the sixth collection in the series on the subject of Threshold Concepts, following the 8th Biennial Conference held in 2021, anchored at London's UCL but running online across the world. Its contributors, who range from ‘old hands'to new members of the community finding their feet, mull over the insights of the threshold concepts framework in higher education, scrutinise their own fields of study, explore the implications of liminality for pedagogy and becoming professional practitioners, and consider the broad implications for pedagogy of factoring in the troublesomeness of knowledge and learning.

Writing can be a tortuous process in any discipline. However, it can be particularly daunting in science, technology, engineering, the arts or architecture, and mathematics (henceforth, STEAM). In fact, it is not uncommon for most STEAM professionals to say things like,'As an engineer, I write only when I have to…'or'engaging in science is easy for me but sitting down and writing my manuscripts are so painful'or'I'm really good at math but I'm a terrible writer…'However, writing can become an easier process in STEAM especially when one's ideas are fleshed out and organized in a systematic manner. While there are a number of books or articles on reading and writing in specific STEM disciplines, at present, there are no books or supplementary materials that serve to support STEAM learners, practitioners, and even researchers in becoming better critical writers. Writing Critically in STEAM will be the first book of its kind to focus primarily on what the scientist, technology specialist, engineer, artist, art historian, or architect, and mathematician needs to know in order to become a finer writer in one's field. In addition, given the current post-truth zeitgeist, Writing Critically in STEAM addresses the essential issue of evidence as a means of supporting scientific and scientifically related claims.

There are a number of books focused on the craft of college-level teaching. However, the vast majority of those books are tailored to tenure-track faculty. A number of specialty books also have been published, including texts on balancing teaching and research, techniques for teaching certain types of students (e.g., first-generation), and techniques for teaching for certain types of instructors (e.g., African-American women). Online resources are available, but locating material can be time-consuming.The target audience for The Essentials of College Teaching: A Guide for New and Adjunct College Instructors are adjunct (non tenure-track) instructors. Adjuncts now constitute 76.4% of U.S. faculty across all institutional types, with a staggering 80% at two-year institutions. Although teaching a heavy load, adjuncts are not typically included in on-campus professional development opportunities to improve their teaching skills. This book would be particularly helpful for first time or relatively novice college-level instructors, including doctoral graduate students teaching their first sections, new community college instructors, and new four-year college and university instructors.It's designed to get novice instructors through their first term, nerves intact and students satisfied. This book addresses the transformation of primary education in the former Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. It follows the overall transformation of education and school policy and offers original insights into the everyday life of the schools at that time. It also provides a unique perspective on the whole transformation process. The work discusses the school environment in the context of specific local characteristics, such as parents, community, regional institutions, and national and international contexts. The book specifically focuses on the changes in primary school management in terms of economics, organization, and personnel. The processes of pedagogical change are an essential theme of the book. They cover how teachers proceeded through the changes in their work at the time of the transformation and the reasons for their resistance to change, including the challenges that the transformation introduced into their work and personal lives. The book also monitors how the teachers navigated the selection and use of new textbooks and tools, such as digital tools. The work originates in historical-pedagogical research, based primarily on the oral history method and complemented by the study of contemporary documents.

This book examines the structural and cultural factors that explain the persistence of an attainment gap between white and Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students in UK universities. So-called ‘deficit'approaches have long represented the orthodoxy in higher education strategy-making, yet they overlook the structural and institutional factors that reproduce attainment gaps. Whereas students already in possession of the right ‘academic capital'are made to feel validated and empowered in their learning, BAME students – particularly those from working class backgrounds – may feel marginalised by dominant hierarchical cultures on campus.This book provides an important and unique contribution to the study of racial equity in higher education. Die Sportwissenschaft favorisiert seit über 30 Jahren spielorientierte Methoden zur Vermittlung von Sportspielen, doch im sportunterrichtlichen Alltag dominiert nach wie vor eine Orientierung an der Technik. Die zentrale Frage ist, wie Lehrpersonen spielorientierte Methoden effektiv umsetzen können und welche professionelle Unterstützung sie dabei benötigen. Ein Forschungsteam der Pädagogischen Hochschule Zürich hat ein Konzept für die Umsetzung der Spielmethode'Teaching Games for Understanding'entwickelt und evaluiert. Die Studie untersucht, wie sich eine Orientierung am Spiel in der Unterrichtspraxis zeigt und unter welchen Bedingungen sie gelingen kann. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein qualitatives Forschungsdesign mit Längsschnittcharakter und unter Verwendung von Interviews und Unterrichtsbeobachtungen angewendet. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass die spielorientierte Vermittlung von Sportspielen bei Lehrpersonen gut ankommt und sich langfristig etablieren lässt. Diese Methode fördert nicht nur fachliche Ziele, sondern auch überfachliche Kompetenzen bei den Lernenden. Die größte Herausforderung für Lehrpersonen besteht darin, schülerorientiert zu unterrichten und echte Partizipation zu ermöglichen. Planungssicherheit, kognitiv aktivierende Lernaufgaben und Kooperation unter Lehrpersonen sind Schlüsselfaktoren für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung spielorientierter Vermittlungsmethoden.
