What is most strikingly new about the transcultural is its sudden ubiquity. Following in the wake of previous concepts in cultural and literary studies such as creolization, hybridity, and syncretism, and signalling a family relationship to terms such as transnationality, translocality, and transmigration, ‘transcultural'terminology has unobtrusively but powerfully edged its way into contemporary theoretical and critical discourse. The four sections of this volume denote major areas where ‘transcultural'questions and problematics have come to the fore: theories of culture and literature that have sought to account for the complexity of culture in a world increasingly characterized by globalization, transnationalization, and interdependence; realities of individual and collective life-worlds shaped by the ubiquity of phenomena and experiences relating to transnational connections and the blurring of cultural boundaries; fictions in literature and other media that explore these realities, negotiate the fuzzy edges of ‘ethnic'or ‘national'cultures, and participate in the creation of transnational public spheres as well as transcultural imaginations and memories; and, finally, pedagogy and didactics, where earlier models of teaching ‘other'cultures are faced with the challenge of coming to terms with cultural complexity both in what is being taught and in the people it is taught to, and where ‘target cultures'have become elusive. The idea of ‘locating'culture and literature exclusively in the context of ethnicities or nations is rapidly losing plausibility throughout an ‘English-speaking world'that has long since been multi- rather than monolingual. Exploring the prospects and contours of ‘Transcultural English Studies'thus reflects a set of common challenges and predicaments that in recent years have increasingly moved centre stage not only in the New Literatures in English, but also in British and American studies.

This book considers the place and value of knowledge in contemporary society. “Knowledge” is not a self-evident concept: both its denotations and connotations are historically situated. Since the Enlightenment, knowledge has been a matter of discovery through effort, and “knowledge for its own sake” a taken-for-granted ideal underwriting progressive education as a process which not only taught “for” and “about” something, but also ennobled the soul. While this ideal has not been explicitly rejected, in recent decades there has been a tacit move away from a strong emphasis on its centrality, even in Higher Education. The authors address the values that inform knowledge production in its present forms, and seek to identify social and cultural factors that support these values.Against the background of increasingly restrictive conditions of academic work, the first section of this volume offers incisive critiques of Higher Education, with examples drawn from Australia and New Zealand. The second group of chapters considers how academics have viewed, and have tried to adapt to, present circumstances. The third section comprises papers that consider epistemological issues in the generation and promulgation of knowledge. The chapters in this volume are indicative of the work that needs to be done so that we can come to comprehend – and perhaps try and improve – our relationship to learning and knowledge in the 21st Century.This timely book will be of particular interest to workers in higher education; it should also inform and challenge all those who have concerns for the future of the intellectual life of our civilization.

Following the warm reception given to The Idea of Education, a volume of papers in this same Rodopi Series, a second conference around similar themes was held at Oxford University and this book is the result. This edited book provides the reader with a fairly representative, coherent and cohesive statement of the 2003 Oxford conference. Quoting the Chancellor of Paris University with regretting that “in the old days … lectures were more frequent … but now the time taken for lectures is being spent in meeting and discussions” our keynote Frank McMahon made the profound observation that some of the issues around education have been with us for a surprisingly long time. The majority of studies on the quality of life have been conducted in Western contexts and are based on Western participants. Comparatively speaking, there are only a few studies that have been conducted in different Chinese contexts. Also, there are fewer QOL studies based on children and adolescents, or studies that examine the relationship between QOL and economic disadvantage. In addition, more research is needed to address the methodological issues related to the assessment of quality of life. This volume is a constructive response to the challenges described above. Laura Zapfe's aim is to explain how education system and school characteristics affect the gender gap in mathematics and reading competencies. She adapts the macro-meso-micro model. At the micro level, she uses theories, e.g., gender-specific socialization, highlighting how gender-specific expectations and stereotypes cause gendered interest and skills and therefore gender differences in mathematics and reading. Deriving a macro-meso-micro link, she explains how education system characteristics such as competition, differentiation, and standardization, and school characteristics could increase or decrease the gender-specific socialization effects, leading to larger or smaller gender gaps in mathematics and reading competencies. On this basis, she performs a cross-national comparison of 78 countries participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, combined with further researched macro data with three-level mixed-effects models. The results show that boys have an advantage in mathematics, girls have an advantage in reading, the gender effects are slightly higher for reading, and the gender effects at the school level are more pronounced than those at the country level.

Hierfür wird mit einem systemtheoretischen Organisationsverständnis sowie einer äquivalenzfunktionalistischen Theorietechnik operiert und eine Beschreibung der organisationalen Funktionslogiken, ausgehend vom Bezugsproblem unklarer rationaler Technologien in Forschung und Lehre, entwickelt.Der Einbezug organisationaler Funktionslogiken erzeugt ein weiterführendes Verständnis der digitalen Transformation an Universitäten. Deborah Luise Lutz explores support work relationships, the relationships between people with intellectual disabilities in receipt of a personal budget and their support workers. Through the methodology of Institutional Ethnography, she specifically investigates how personal budget policies that organize support work in Germany and Australia influence support work relationships. She found that the policies of personal budgets are connected to people's views and expectations about the support work relationship and the support work context that influence the relationship. The author argues that disability research, policy and practice need to be cognisant of this interconnection to improve the quality of support work relationships.

This book shows what kind of theoretical and methodological bases should pertain to contemporary job analysis. The authors describe the European Questionnaire for Job Analysis as a new psychometric and econometric tool to measure the specific job requirements for work efficiency in the particular job positions in a company. Job analysis is primarily an object of interest in work and industrial psychology. However, currently there is an increasing number of interdisciplinary researchers, that is psychologists collaborating with economists, sociologists and other social science representatives, on work position analysis. This book is an introduction to reconstructive foreign language research using the documentary method. It contains an intensive reflection on social practices and the role of language awareness within the context of the instructional interaction in the foreign language classroom. Der Band stellt dar, inwiefern Teamarbeit bei Lehrkräften an berufsbildenden Schulen in Hessen mittlerweile implementiert ist und inwiefern ihre Einstellung und Motivation bezüglich Teamarbeit deren Qualität beeinflusst. Die Autorin nutzt standardisierte Items als methodischen Zugang. Ihre deskriptiv und inferenzstatistische Analyse bezieht sich auf eine große Stichprobe von Lehrpersonen an verschiedenen berufsbildenden Schulen in Südhessen. Die Autorin stellt fest, dass Teamarbeit mittlerweile an berufsbildenden Schulen etabliert ist, wenngleich deren jeweilige Ausprägungen von Team zu Team zwischen relativ pragmatischen und sehr internalen Ansätzen schwanken. Übergreifend sind die befragten Lehrkräfte tendenziell positiv gegenüber Teamarbeit eingestellt und schätzen deren Qualität mehrheitlich als hoch ein.

Where young people grow up makes a decisive difference to their life chances. Drawing on case studies from ten European cities, this book looks at how the local environment and the services available for young people affect their socialization. What comes to the fore are the local matters. On the one hand, there are experiences of discrimination and marginalization due to distance and isolation, decay and neglect but also related to piecemeal and top-down approaches to youth and social services. On the other, we find signs of positive transformation and drivers of social innovation: community building projects, the revitalization of abandoned places, appreciative approaches to servicing and a whole array of tactics that young people deploy to overcome their daily struggles.

Die Bologna-Reform hat mit dem Ziel, einen gemeinsamen europäischen Hochschulraum zu schaffen, in der deutschen Hochschullandschaft zu zahlreichen Veränderungen geführt. Unter anderem waren die Hochschulen angehalten, wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung als dritte Säule neben Forschung und Lehre zu etablieren. In einer qualitativ angelegten Evaluationsstudie untersucht die Autorin in diesem Zusammenhang einen weiterbildenden Masterstudiengang. Dabei interessierte besonders, aus welcher Motivation heraus Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sich für diese Weiterbildungsform entschieden, ob die formulierten Erwartungen erfüllt wurden, das Studium erwachsenengerecht gestaltet war und ob bei den Einschätzungen geschlechtsspezifische Aspekte eine Rolle spielten.

This book investigates the nature of identity formation among economically backward adolescent Muslim girls in northern India by focusing on the interstitial spaces of the ‘home'and ‘school'. It examines issues of religion, patriarchy and education, to interrogate the relationship between pedagogy and religion in South Asia. This book presents a Facebook study on members of the Cusp Generation, or those born before the “great digital divide” of 1995. This delineation allows for a discussion on the possible socio-cultural implications of Facebook use for people of all ages. Members of the Cusp Generation are in a unique position as “part digital natives” to easily acquire and use new media technologies, while being more critically aware of the personal, social, and cultural effects that may arise from them thanks to having some memory of the pre-digital era. Drawing on identity theories rooted in critical theory and cultural studies, the author shows that there are potential constrictions on people's agency in their Facebook use caused by consumer discourse, Facebook's hyperreal nature and structure, psychological predispositions, and the potential for avatar attachment. In raising concerns over the impacts of technology-based communication, this book explores how the medium of Facebook extends and exacerbates processes of offline social reproduction and discusses how the positive social and political aspects of Facebook can be enhanced. The findings contribute to academic discussions in the fields of cultural studies and Education and can be applied to the development of critical media literacy for curriculum and pedagogy.
