Each year, millions of high school students consider whether to continue their schooling and attend and complete college. Despite evidence showing that a college degree yields far-reaching benefits, critics of higher education increasingly argue that college “does not pay off” and some students - namely, disadvantaged prospective college goers - would be better served by forgoing higher education. But debates about the value of college often fail to carefully consider what is required to speak knowledgeably about the benefits –what a person's life might look like had they not completed college, or their college counterfactual. In Overcoming the Odds sociologist Jennie E. Brand reveals the benefits of completing college by comparing life outcomes of college graduates with their college counterfactuals. Drawing on two cohorts of nationally representative data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics National Longitudinal Surveys program, Brand uses matching and machine learning methods to estimate the effects of college completion across students with varying likelihoods of completing four-year degrees. To illustrate her findings, Brand describes outcomes using matched vignettes of college and non-college graduates. Brand shows that four-year college completion enables graduates to increase wages and household income, while also circumventing unemployment, low-wage work, job instability, poverty, and social assistance. Completing college also increases civic engagement. Most of these benefits are larger for disadvantaged than for more advantaged students, rendering arguments that college has limited benefits for unlikely graduates as flawed. Brand concludes that greater long-term earnings, and less job instability and unemployment, and thus more tax revenue, less reliance on public assistance, and high levels of volunteering indicate that public investment in higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds yields far-reaching collective benefits. She asserts that it is better for our society when more people complete college. Overcoming the Odds is an innovative and enlightening exploration of how college can transform lives.

Many of the problems we face now are more complex than in earlier times, requiring broadly based approaches our traditional silo specialisations are ill-prepared to deal with. They involve technologies whose range of positive and negative effects are not well understood. Many of these problems are global in nature and can no longer be treated just as local issues. Our current approach to education does not adequately prepare us to tackle these problems.New approaches to education are needed to prepare us for the changes that are to come. The future of our planet, our civilisation, our community and our economy depend on it. This book proposes changes that will better prepare us for this future.

While there has been an increase of Black women faculty in higher education institutions, the academy writ large continues to exploit, discriminate, and uphold institutionalized gendered racism through its policies and practices. Black women have navigated, negotiated, and learned how to thrive from their respective standpoints and epistemologies, traversing the academy in ways that counter typical narratives of success and advancement. This edited volume bridges together foundational and contemporary intergenerational, interdisciplinary voices to elucidate Black feminist epistemologies and praxis. This book presents the creative, arts-based and educative thinking resulting from a “21 day autoethnography challenge” set of self-guided prompts arising from the large-scale collaborative, creative, and global project to explore Massive and Microscopic Sensemaking during COVId-19 Times. It employs a guiding methodological framework of critical autoethnography, narrating the macro and micro experiences of COVID-19 from a first-person, and critically, culturally-informed perspective. The book features chapters creatively responding to the 21-day pandemic experiment through digital autoethnographic artworks, writings, and collaborations. It allowed authors to build embodied sensibilities, practice autoethnographic forms of writing and making, and transform personal experiences through the COVID-19 moment into critical understanding of scale, sense-making, and the relationality of humans, nonhumans, and the planet.

Schulabsentismus als das illegitime Fernbleiben von Unterricht und Schule wurde lange Zeit als vor allem städtisches Problem gesehen. Vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmenden Peripherisierung von ländlichen Bildungslandschaften mit entsprechenden Problemstellungen stellt sich die Frage, ob sich Schulabsentismus auch in diesen Regionen ausbreitet und wie damit umgegangen wird. In einer triangulativen Mehrebenen-Studie wurde diesem Forschungsdesiderat aus Sicht von Lehrkräften und weiteren Expert•innen nachgegangen.

Closing the Achievement Gap is made up of six articles. The first paper examines Cleveland's restructuring initiative in light of two theories on early adolescent development: person-in-environment theory and the focal theory of change. This is followed by a study that illustrates the difference in academic performance between low-income children and their peers, minority children and their classmates, and those schools that serve a majority of children from low-income families and those that serve a more advantaged population. The third article summarizes key findings of a study that examined the reform efforts of three large urban school districts and a portion of a fourth that had been successful in improving student achievement and reducing racial achievement gaps. It also discusses the implications for research and technical assistance. Next, survey data on 15,800 high school students from three urban school districts is used to investigate the impact of school-level support for higher educational attainment and school racial composition on students'actual educational aspirations. The final article explores whether reading books during summer vacation improves fall reading proficiency and whether access to books increases the volume of summer reading.
