- Abstract
Developmental Science: An Advanced Textbook is the most complete and up-to-date advanced introduction to the field available today. Since its initial publication, the key purpose of this advanced textbook has been to furnish inclusive developmental perspectives on all theoretical, methodological, and substantive areas in developmental science. This eighth edition is no exception, as it continues to underscore the dynamic and exciting status of contemporary developmental science. In this eighth edition, Marc H. Bornstein and Michael E. Lamb have invited international experts to prepare original, comprehensive, and topical treatments of all major areas of developmental science; they are masterfully woven into a single coherent volume. The substantive chapters cover essentials of their main topics, with close attention paid to cultural, lifespan, and applied perspectives. Many chapters in this eighth edition are new, and those carried forward from the seventh edition have been extensively revised. This volume therefore represents faithfully the current status of scholarly efforts in all aspects of developmental science.Ideal for advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses, this advanced textbook is accompanied by two sets of supplementary materials: pedagogy files for students include chapter outlines, things to think about before reading the chapters, glossaries, and suggested readings; and ancillary files for instructors include a PowerPoint deck of tables and figures, classroom assignments, essay questions, multiple-choice questions, and short-answer questions.

- Abstract
This book is the first of two volumes that aim to serve as a comprehensive guide for professionals working with neuropsychological interventions especially designed for children. This first volume presents the theoretical foundations, tips and guidelines for neuropsychologists to develop different interventions, such as stimulation and early intervention with a focus on promoting neuropsychological health; habilitation, appropriate for work with neurodevelopment disorders; and rehabilitation, in cases of structural alterations. In this sense, it reflects the editors'concern to provide material with practical tips, but theoretically grounded, and truly useful to professionals in clinical and also school contexts. This first volume is divided into two parts. The first addresses the theoretical and practical foundations of child neuropsychological assessment and intervention. Neuropsychological assessment is discussed, with a focus on its role in guiding intervention. Also, different types of interventions are presented, and a taxonomy is offered, according to its differential objectives of promotion or remediation and the target population (typical development, functional or structural alterations of the Nervous System), leading to the suggestion of three types of interventions in neuropsychology in both clinical and school contexts: 1) Early preventive Intervention; 2) Habilitation and 3) Rehabilitation. Cognitive stimulation in different contexts, such as school, family and clinical, is also discussed, exploring how teachers and parents can also collaborate in intervention processes, expanding the possibilities for action beyond the clinical context. A section concludes by addressing the importance of the feedback and the neuropsychological assessment report. The second part focuses specifically on stimulation and rehabilitation, offering chapters that target specific skills such as attention, memory, executive functions and academic skills, among others. The chapters summarize evidence, bring tips and illustrate existing materials and programs, in a continuous articulation between theory-evidence-practice. Originally published in Portuguese and now available in English, Neuropsychological Interventions for Children – Volumes 1 and 2 will be of interest to professionals working with neuropsychology in clinical and school contexts. It will also be useful in neuropsychology teaching contexts (specialization courses in neuropsychology and related areas) and for students and professionals in interface areas, such as Psychology, Education, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy among others. The translation of the original Portuguese version of this book into English was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
As trends continue in U.S. schools toward a more racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse K-12 student population, school-based professionals have an important role in supporting students'mental health and learning. Practitioners, including school psychologists, school counselors, and social workers, are expected to have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to provide culturally responsive services with the goal of promoting safe, supportive, and inclusive schools. In Culturally Responsive School-Based Practices, Anisa N. Goforth and Andy V. Pham provide foundational knowledge and practical strategies for conducting culturally responsive assessment and promoting the resilience and well-being of culturally and linguistically diverse populations, including refugee, immigrant, racial and ethnic minoritized students, and English-language learners. The book integrates cultural humility and social justice, and emphasizes positive psychology and collaborative approaches that minimize the use of deficit thinking. With case examples, practical resources, discussion questions, and opportunities to engage in self-reflection or critical reflexivity, educators and practitioners who deliver educational and mental health supports in schools will be able to develop and demonstrate cultural humility, cultural responsiveness, and advocacy within educational settings.

- Abstract
Why should inquiry - the engine for independent, curiosity- and interest-driven, life-long learning - be a curricular imperative, and its presence a criterion for excellent education? Is it possible to teach inquiry skills systematically and to engage learners in being inquirers across elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schooling? To answer these urgent questions, this book pulls together more than four decades of expert opinion, quantitative research, and qualitative research on inquiry in different disciplines, school subjects, and levels of education; and presents a dozen different pedagogical, philosophical, and disciplinary traditions within which evidence and rationale are found for building learning and teaching experiences around inquiry-based curricula Inquiry in Education, Volume I: The Conceptual Foundations for Research as a Curricular Imperative is the first book to gather all these sources together, to build a cross-disciplinary case for inquiry as the central core of sound curriculum design, and to offer an organized interpretation of this large body of knowledge from a variety of perspectives and for different educational purposes. A companion volume, Shore, Aulls, & Delcourt, Eds., Inquiry in Education, Volume II: Overcoming Barriers to Successful Implementation, focuses on a corollary question: If inquiry is such a good thing, why is it not universal practice? What barriers stand in the way, and how can teachers overcome them?Inquiry in Education, Volume I is intended for scholars, faculty, and students of education, and for practitioners at all levels of schooling who support inquiry-oriented reforms in education and who want to learn more about how to use inquiry in their own practice.

- Abstract
The Power to Learn: The Benefits and the Promise of Personalized Instruction advances the notion that personalized instruction is the direction that schools must take if all students are expected to succeed with difficult learning challenges. Based on the premise that all students are capable, this book offers practical information so that schools can be designed or redesigned to meet individual students where they are academically and to challenge them toward deeper learning. Unlocking their capability is best accomplished by implementing a process labeled DPIE: diagnosis, prescription, implementation, and evaluation. Examples dating back to the early 20th century are described that show the idea is derived from historical antecedents and twenty-two research-based strategies and tactics are offered. Also included are five exemplary schools from preschool to high school.

- Abstract
While concerns regarding the poor reading progress made by too large a minority of children feature with monotonous regularity in both popular and professional critiques of contemporary schooling, we are perhaps in danger of underestimating the significant progress that has been made by reading scientists. Much of this progress in reading research and theory, however, has yet to filter through to the work of teachers in classrooms. As the title makes clear, the focus of this book is on this recent research and its implications for teachers, educational psychologists and others working in schools. This book brings together nine essays written by leading experts in the field: Kate Nation, Kathleen Rastle, Jennifer Buckingham, Rhona Stainthorp, Jonathan Solity, Kerry Hempenstall, Linda S. - Subjects
- Psycholinguistics, Language policy, Multilingualism, Language and culture
- Abstract
This book is a synthesis of important topics in studying multilingualism: dynamic multilingualism, translanguaging, language policy, bilingual education, and bilingualism and cognition. The author as an immigrant herself integrated personal and dramatic experiences around most of the topics to show how they influence the lives of immigrants around the globe. The author's aim is to reach the readers in a personal way. The issue of translanguaging and social justice is crucial for the book. The studies on bilingualism and cognition give amazing results on how bilingual children profit from increased metalinguistic awareness, abstract thinking, creativity, working memory, attention control, to name just a few. Bilingualism is shown to be a real gift for human understanding. The original feature of this book is the integration of excerpts of the interviews the author conducted with the experts in the field of bilingualism: Ellen Bialystok, Jim Cummins, Ofelia Garcí a, Christine He lot, Nancy Hornberger, and Catherine Snow. For each topic their opinions are combined with future directions in the research on bilingualism that can certainly inspire other researchers in the field. Finally, this book is called Drama of Multilingualism: Literature Review and Liberation, and it is exactly that, informing and affecting those who want to embark on this dramatic journey of exploring multilingualism.

- Abstract
This book examines the global movement of putting more emphasis on students'social and emotional development in education. It provides some order in the unstructured multitude of desirable socio-emotional educational objectives and ambitions that have resulted from this movement and builds on a careful conceptual analysis. It starts out by examining the roots of the movement and discusses different emphases. Next it makes use of instructional and psychological constructs and theories to arrive at meaningful categorizations of major domains and types of social-emotional “skills”. One of the key assumptions is that social and emotional attributes are malleable by means of educational interventions. The book reviews available research evidence for this assumption, taking into account psychological studies and meta-analyses. It then creates new evidence based on a new meta-analysis, which concentrated on the effects of educational interventions on skills associated with the conscientiousness factor of the Big5 taxonomy. In the final chapter, the book discusses the implications for educational policy and practice; a discussion in which attention is given to political and ethical questions about the desirability of treating social and emotional attributes as educational goals.

- Abstract
Cognitive Development and Cognitive Neuroscience: The Learning Brain is a thoroughly revised edition of the bestselling Cognitive Development. The new edition of this full-colour textbook has been updated with the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, going beyond Piaget and traditional theories to demonstrate how emerging data from the brain sciences require a new theoretical framework for teaching cognitive development, based on learning. Building on the framework for teaching cognitive development presented in the first edition, Goswami shows how different cognitive domains such as language, causal reasoning and theory of mind may emerge from automatic neural perceptual processes. Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Development integrates principles and data from cognitive science, neuroscience, computer modelling and studies of non-human animals into a model that transforms the study of cognitive development to produce both a key introductory text and a book which encourages the reader to move beyond the superficial and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Cognitive Development and Cognitive Neuroscience is essential for students of developmental and cognitive psychology, education, language and the learning sciences. It will also be of interest to anyone training to work with children.

- Abstract
Many students today struggle with stress and anxiety caused by increasing academic, social, and extracurricular demands. This book provides school psychologists, counselors, teachers, and other school faculty with guidelines for improving students'mental and physical well‑being, which in turn leads to improved academic performance and happier, better-adjusted students. Chapter authors review important considerations related to the benefits, limitations, and potential risks associated with implementing mind–body interventions in school settings. In addition to general guidelines, they review specific practices in depth—including yoga, mindfulness, physical activity, and hypnosis—presenting a three-tiered model for delivering services universally, with targeted groups, and with individuals. They also discuss how these and other interventions can be used to target specific issues such as eating disorders, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and trauma. Illustrative case studies demonstrate how to implement these interventions in realistic scenarios. Collaboration between mental health professionals, faculty, and parents is emphasized throughout the volume so that students'mind–body health is addressed both at school and at home.

- School shootings--Prevention
- Abstract
This book calls for a multidimensional and comprehensive approach to reduce the number of school shootings, rather than the simplistic unidimensional strategy that is commonly advocated. Based on meta-analyses examining which variables are most often related to positive changes in violent student behavior, it also integrates other research and historical trends in order to formulate recommendations regarding how to reduce school shootings. The topic of school shootings is one of the most vital issues in society today, because: 1) schools should be the safest places on Earth for children, 2) if students do not feel safe, they are not going to learn very well in school, and 3) it is of such great concern to parents and society at large, as evinced by the degree of news coverage that school shooting incidents receive.Sadly, despite the gravity of the problem, many people tend to either respond in an emotional way or propose simplistic solutions. Gun control legislation alone will not solve the problem; instead, it calls for a multi-disciplinary and multifaceted approach, involving parents, teachers, schools and healthcare. This book investigates the status quo, goals, and solutions, pursuing a fact-based approach. This book is of special interest to the academic community, national leaders, and other policymakers. It is also suitable for courses on education, psychology, sociology, criminal justice and other areas of law. It will also appeal to the general audience.

- Abstract
This volume – now in its second edition – has been completely updated to provide the most comprehensive and accessible handbook of practices and tools for the clinical assessment of child and adolescent intelligence. Designed specifically as a teaching tool, it provides students with an accessible guide to interpretation and applies the same interpretive systems across many tests. It emphasizes the proper interpretation of intelligence tests within the context of a child's life circumstances and includes several devices to enhance the logical processes of assessment, beginning with test selection and concluding with the reporting of results. In addition, Clinical Assessment of Child and Adolescent Intelligence: - Stresses the importance of the interpretive process over the value of specific tests - Fosters a deeper understanding of the intelligence construct - Emphasizes learning by example, using valuable case studies and vignettes designed to provide students with concrete models to emulate This edition covers all facets of intelligence testing, including detailed explanations of test interpretation, theory, research, and the full-range of testing options for preschoolers through adult clients. New chapters have been introduced on neuropsychological approaches, adolescent and adult intelligence, including coverage of WAIS-III and KAIT, and achievement and intelligence screeners have been added. And although designed primarily as a text for beginning graduate students, the book is also useful as a'refresher'for clinicians who are looking for updated assessment information.

- Abstract
Enhancing Teacher Education, Development, and Evaluation examines the complex role that recent educational reforms have played in the teaching profession. The failure of programs like Race to the Top to benefit teaching and learning outcomes has yielded many questions about what went wrong and how a research-based plan for true systemic progress could actually work. Covering inaccurate narratives about schools and student achievement, evidence for teacher effectiveness, and the history and repercussions of Race to the Top, this book culminates with a proposal for future research and policy initiatives that more accurately and more equitably prioritize the measurement and improvement of teaching and learning. Five concise yet comprehensive chapters invite teacher and principal educators, teachers and school leaders in training, district administrators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to better understand the implications of and possible paths beyond misguided reform efforts. An overview of the recent past and an inspiration for the immediate future, this definitive analysis offers insights into how more reasonable, empirically derived strategies will ultimately foster more successful schools.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This edited volume provides a venue for scholars whose work challenges the typical, static conceptions, and methods of studying creativity. More specifically, the book will serve as an effort to introduce more dynamic definitions, conceptions, and approaches for studying creativity in the context of educational practice. By doing so, it feeds the strong contemporary need for more dynamic conceptions of creativity in educational settings. This is particularly important given the fast evolution of modern society and the widespread consensus that efforts to develop creative potential should be democratized -- extending well beyond the boundaries of the gifted subset and the walls of the classroom. This work recognizes that more dynamic perspectives on creativity are necessary for understanding its complexity, value, and meaning in educational contexts.

- Abstract
The first volume of its kind, this provocative book evaluates the construct of cultural competence from multiple perspectives. At the intersection of diverse disciplines and domains, contributors argue for greater clarity in understanding the cultural competence construct, a deeper level of analysis as to its multifaceted components, and call for concrete practical objectives and science-based means of measurement. Serious, nuanced discussion addresses challenges, strengths, and limitations of current cultural competence practice in terms of sociocultural concepts (e.g., race, ethnicity) and practical concepts (e.g., sensitivity in the therapeutic relationship, treatment efficacy). In addition, contributors identify future directions for research, training, and practice with the potential to spur the further evolution of this clinically important construct. This timely book: Critiques the cultural competence construct and its evaluation as it is currently disseminated within applied psychology. Compares and contrasts how cultural competence is defined within clinical, school, and counseling psychology. Analyzes difficulties and challenges in understanding the cultural competence construct as evaluated through the lens of closely related fields outside of applied psychology. Spotlights complexities in cultural competence issues pertaining to specific populations. Sets out implications for education and training, offering a detailed outline for an ideal college course in cultural competence With this level of reasoning and rigor, Cultural Competence in Applied Psychology is sure to stimulate long-overdue dialogue and debate among professionals across a wide variety of fields, such as clinical psychology, social work, child and socialpsychology, psychotherapy, school psychology, and counseling.
