This book is devoted to the topic of mathematical skills development, which was the focus of Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory. This book examines educators and parents'practices of corporal punishment of preschool-aged children in school and at home in Tanzania, considering why it is that many children in Tanzania are still subject to corporal punishment. It explores the attitudes of parents, teachers, and educational leaders about corporal punishment, in the context of existing government policies, laws, and regulations, using interviews, questionnaires and observation. Corporal punishment is widely and frequently used by both parents and teachers as a way of maintaining discipline, with most regarding it favourably as a means of behavioural modification. Furthermore, the book shows that the use of corporal punishment in Tanzania is influenced by cultural norms and religious beliefs, teacher qualifications and parents'levels of education, past experiences of corporal punishment, and related beliefs about the practice. Crucially, there has not yet been a societal-level legal framework established to protectchildren from the harms involved.

It is widely accepted that interactions between adults and infants change over time and babies play a dynamic role in their interactions with those who care for them. Acknowledging that their sense of self is moulded by these experiences, and reflected in their own behaviours later in life, this book focuses on the development of an infant's sense of self from the moment of birth, into school, and beyond. In Between Teaching and Caring in the Preschool, John C. Pruit argues that preschool teaching is more than a set of roles and duties tied to institutional expectations. Drawing on two years of ethnographic fieldwork, twenty-three interviews and countless conversations with preschool teachers, and analysis of preschool documents, Pruit opens the black box of the preschool to show the complexity of the preschool teacher identity as it unfolds in everyday practices of teaching and caring. His analysis of preschool teachers'talk and interaction addresses pertinent sociological and early childhood education themes, including classroom management, social control, emotions, and identity construction. He demonstrates there is more going on in the preschool than teaching young children and caring for them. Through practices of classroom management and teaching language, preschool teachers socialize children into education contexts and exert social control in and through teaching practices. By managing emotions, preschool teachers also manage impressions of themselves and the preschool. He also shows how preschool teachers use resources like Montessori pedagogy and their lived experience to construct authenticity. Pruit concludes that institutions, such as ECE, shape identities within and away from the institution.

This book re-theorizes the relationship between pedagogy and play. The authors suggest that pedagogical play is characterized by conceptual reciprocity (a pedagogical approach for supporting children's academic learning through joint play) and agentic imagination (a concept that when present in play, affords the child's motives and imagination a critical role in learning and development). These new concepts are brought to life using a cultural-historical approach to the analysis of play, supported in each chapter by visual narratives used as a research method for re-theorising play as a pedagogical activity. Whenever a cultural-historical approach is applied to understanding pedagogical play, the whole context of the playful event is always included. Further, the child's cultural environment is taken into account in order to better understand their play. Children from different countries play differently for many reasons, which may include their resources, local cultural beliefs about play and specific pedagogical practices. The inclusion and acknowledgement of social, cultural and historical contexts gives credence and value to understanding play from both child and adult perspectives, which the authors believe is important for the child's learning and development.
