The book explores the relationships between the personality traits of Polish university students learning English as a foreign language and their use of language learning strategies (LLS). It provides a solid theoretical background for the investigation of the interface between the two constructs, describes the applied analytical procedures in detail, and reports the results and implications of a large-scale study. Chapter 1 presents multiple perspectives on the investigation of human personality and presents insights from a selection of studies into the role of personality in foreign language learning. Chapter 2 addresses the construct of LLS, while Chapter 3 links strategy use to other individual learner characteristics, with a focus on personality. Chapter 4 sets the methodological framework for the empirical investigation, describes the rationale for conducting the study, and includes a thorough description of analytical procedures. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie stehen Gesprächsanalysen natürlicher sprachlicher Interaktionen zwischen Lehrpersonen, Grundschülern und Grundschülerinnen sowie deren Sorgeberechtigten – sogenannte „Lernentwicklungsgespräche“. Die Autorin entwirft ein interaktionistisches Verständnis von Partizipation. Mit dieser Perspektive gelingt es, soziale Ordnungen in Lernentwicklungsgesprächen in Bezug auf die Partizipation der Teilnehmenden zu rekonstruieren. Ihre Bedeutung erhält die Studie u. a. im Kontext des (grund)schulpädagogischen Diskurses um die Individualisierung von Unterricht. Welche Lernstile, Lernstrategien und welchen Lernerfolg haben berufstätige Studierende? Dieser Frage gehen vier Professorinnen und Professoren unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen der AKAD University Stuttgart in der vorliegenden Studie nach. In der quantitativen Untersuchung werden die Effekte einzelner Lernstrategien auf den Lernerfolg in Abhängigkeit von Lernstiltypen mit Hilfe einer Faktorenanalyse nachgewiesen. An der zugrunde liegenden Online-Erhebung beteiligten sich mehr als 1.000 Studierende. Ergänzt werden die detaillierten quantitativen Analysen durch eine qualitative Untersuchung der Lernbiographien berufstätiger Studierender, von denen hier einige exemplarisch vorgestellt werden. Die Forschungsergebnisse dieser Arbeit eröffnen neue Perspektiven für die wissenschaftlich fundierte Weiterentwicklung und Neuausrichtung von Lernszenarien für berufstätige Studierende.

Nicht immer funktioniert das Lernen im Studium wie geplant. Arbeitsprobleme beim selbstregulierten Lernen sind ein altbekanntes Phänomen, welches in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wenig wissenschaftlich untersucht wurde. Die vorrangige Beschäftigung mit Lernstrategien ließ die Frage nach dem Gelingen bzw. Misslingen der Selbstregulation als solcher hintenanstehen.Die Studie beschreibt und erfasst verschiedene Formen von Arbeitsproblemen im Studium. In mehreren Untersuchungen wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Beziehungen Probleme in den Bereichen von Arbeitszeit und -aufwand, von Arbeitseffektivität sowie von Arbeitserleben und Arbeitsloslösung zu Lernmotivation, Lernstrategien und Studienerfolg haben. Dabei werden verschiedene Formen habitueller Lernmotivation unter Ausblendung motivationsfremder Komponenten erfasst, um den in der Forschung zu beobachtenden Bias zugunsten intrinsischer Motivation zu überwinden. Da der bisherige Fokus auf kognitiven Lernstrategien dazu geführt hat, dass die grundlegende Schwierigkeit vieler Studierender, sich selbst zum Lernen zu bewegen, nicht genügend Beachtung fand, werden Strategien der Selbstmotivierung herkömmlichen Lernstrategien an die Seite gestellt.
