This book brings together English translations of thirteen research papers published in recent years by Chinese historians, sociologists, and educators. These papers investigate various dimensions of the legacy of China's historic The Christian Universities which continues to inspire higher education reform in China even in the twenty-first century.This book focuses on Christian Universities, which fostered a particularly notable Liberal Arts Education in the Chinese context. Besides embracing some ideals in common with Liberal Arts Education developed in the West, their Liberal Arts Education curriculum had an emphasis on readings in the classics, history, philosophy, religion, ethics, and literature which conveyed traditional Chinese values. The Christian Universities also shared a strong commitment to moral formation, community service, and global citizenship education. This book emphasizes Liberal Arts Education that focused on the whole person, whereacademic knowledge, skills, and character were equally valued. The book presents distinctive characteristics of the study of Christian higher education in China and the interplay between globalization and localization.

This open-access book documents the issues and developments in mathematics textbook research as presented at the Fourth International Conference on Mathematics Textbook Research and Development (ICMT 4), held at Beijing Normal University (China) in November 2022. It showcases research and practical experiences from the mathematics textbook research field from over 20 countries and reflects the current trend of curriculum reform globally in terms of mathematics textbook research. This book traces the process of producing testimonio with the children of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), an insurgent group during Peru's internal war (1980–2000). It examines how the group navigates post-war struggles over memory while dealing with the ‘children of terrorists'stigma. Drawing from a cycles of inquiry approach, the book theorizes three movements for memory work: a realist presentation of testimonial narratives, a ‘politics of memory'engaging with the conditions of production and a ‘poetics of memory'that troubles memory, voice and representation for qualitative inquiry in post-war contexts. The notion of academic freedom dates back to the creation of universities and has long been understood to be central to their vocation. This freedom has come under attack by different actors throughout its history. In the current context, rising threats to democracy and human liberties, the corporatization of research, concerns about diversity and increased societal polarization, are putting a considerable pressure on its exercise. However, academic freedom is also a concept that suffers from persistent ambiguities associated with the general notion of freedom as well as debates about the function of universities. This edited collection addresses the question of academic freedom by situating it in its broader global context. More conceptual treatments contribute to an understanding of academic freedom as distinct and separate from, although related to, freedom of expression, or student rights. These conceptual treatments are combined with studies of actual struggles over the scope of academic freedom in specific universities. This open access book presents the conceptual and operational foundations of the IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (2023), which is designed to assess how well students are prepared for study, work, and life in a digital world. The study measures international differences in students'computer and information literacy (CIL): their ability to use computers to investigate, create, participate and communicate at home, at school, in the workplace and in the community. Participating countries also have an option for their students to complete an assessment of computational thinking (CT). The ICILS assessment framework articulates the basic structure of the study. It provides a description of the field and the constructs to be measured. It outlines the design and content of the measurement instruments, sets down the rationale for those designs, and describes how measures generated by those instruments relate to the constructs. In addition, it hypothesizes relations between constructs so as to provide the foundation for some of the analyses that follow.

This volume provides a broad outlook on migrant youth and schooling in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and the United Kingdom. With the influx of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) on the landscape of higher education, it has become apparent that institutional policy, practices, and procedures for student success must be understood from an empirical and practitioner standpoint. This edited book offers current scholar/practitioners the opportunity to evidence empirical-based strategies and practices at HSIs relating to student success.

This open access report presents the European results from the third cycle (2022) of the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS). Eighteen countries and two benchmarking participants (the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein) administered the European student questionnaire to target grade students. The purpose of the European student questionnaire is to explore specific European-related civic and citizenship issues derived from the overarching ICCS 2022 assessment framework. It includes questions on students'opinions on European-related civic and citizenship issues such as students'sense of European identity, students'opportunities for learning about Europe, students'attitudes toward free movement of European citizens, the European Union, and cooperation among European countries. It also includes questions on students'sustainable behaviors and those related to political consumerism. ICCS 2022 data allows education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, and measure progress in their educational policies.

This book explores the strategies of governments in Doha, Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah in the Arab Gulf to attract offshore campuses of foreign universities. These campuses, predominantly Western, are drawn by policies creating transnational education zones (TEZs) that offer infrastructures, legal exceptions and administrative benefits, while evoking vibrant international academic communities. Governments expect TEZs to develop local higher education and drive economic transformation towards knowledge-based economies. Adopting a cultural political economy perspective, the book integrates insights from urban and economic geography with debates on the Gulf's political economy and transnational higher education. Through qualitative interviews and document analysis, it reveals how governments leverage the zones and their offshore campuses to generate contingent skilled labour and position their cities as international education hubs. This work highlights how governments, driven by the economic imaginary of the knowledge-based economy, create exceptional spaces to navigate the global-local dynamics of transnational higher education.

During this uncertain time, teacher education has never been more needed for West-East dialogues and Reciprocal Learning. Xu and Connelly's concept of reciprocal learning aims to harmonize the West-East dichotomy and foster appreciation in education and understanding of each other's culture and history. This book focuses on the field work done by the Teacher Education Research Team with chapter contributors from Canadian and Chinese professors, graduate students and pre-service teachers who have been deeply engaged in the RLP. Following Xu and Connelly's conceptual framework of “Reciprocal Learning as Collaborative Partnership,” the book begins with knowing the Teacher Education RLP followed by doing the West-East reciprocal learning through the program. It concludes with a discussion of the envisioned future of the RLP and commentaries from distinguished scholars in teacher education, one from the West and the other from the East.

This book covers the construction of international education research community in the 1950s-1990s, and the growth of its ‘disembedded'laboratory i.e. networks, spaces, materiality, travelling, translations. The book follows a sociology of science theoretical framework in order to examine the research-archive of the Swedish internationally renowned educational scholar Torsten Husén (1916-2009). The archive reveals the shifting and heterogenous transnational networks that contribute to the development of social science research beyond fixed time and space dimensions, and that extends social science beyond individual ideas, researchers, environments, institutions and universities. These are practices that create, mobilise, sustain and challenge relations between actors in innovations, knowledge creation and various social activities. In other words, the archive represents the socio-material manifestation not only of the intellectual trajectory of a key education actor but the growing organisation of a whole scientific field at the time.
