This book constitutes the extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers from the 13th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management, IC3K 2021, on October 25–27, 2021. The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 crisis.The 9 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 103 submissions. The purpose of the IC3K is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners on the areas of Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management. IC3K is composed of three co-located conferences, each specialized in at least one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Text, Speech, and Dialogue, TSD 2018, held in Brno, Czech Republic, in September 2018. The 56 regular papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference, NooJ 2017, held in Kenitra and Rabat, Morocco, in May 2017. The 20 revised full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 56 submissions. NooJ is a linguistic development environment that provides tools for linguists to construct linguistic resources that formalize a large gamut of linguistic phenomena: typography, orthography, lexicons for simple words, multiword units and discontinuous expressions, inflectional and derivational morphology, local, structural and transformational syntax, and semantics. The two volumes LNCS 9041 and 9042 constitute the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computational Linguistics and Intelligent Text Processing, CICLing 2015, held in Cairo, Egypt, in April 2015. The total of 95 full papers presented was carefully reviewed and selected from 329 submissions. This book constitutes the proceedings of the International Workshop on Clustering High-Dimensional Data, CHDD 2012, held in Naples, Italy, in May 2012. The 9 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 15 submissions. They deal with the general subject and issues of high-dimensional data clustering; present examples of techniques used to find and investigate clusters in high dimensionality; and the most common approach to tackle dimensionality problems, namely, dimensionality reduction and its application in clustering.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the JSAI-isAI 2014 Workshops LENLS, JURISIN, and GABA which took place on November 2014, in Japan. The 26 contributions in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 57 submissionsfrom the 3 workshops (LENLS11, JURISIN2014, and GABA2014). LENLS (Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics) is an annual international workshop on formal semantics and pragmatics and it focused on the formal and theoretical aspects of natural language. JURISIN (Juris-informatics) 2014 was the 8th event in the series, the purpose of this workshop was to discuss fundamental and practical issues for juris-informatics, bringing together experts from a variety of relevant backgrounds, including law, social science, information and intelligent technology, logic and philosophy (including the area of AI and law). GABA (Graph-based Algorithms for Big Data and its Applications) 2014 was the first workshop on graph structures including string, tree, bipartite- and di-graph for knowledge discovery in big data. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss ideas for realizing big data integration, including algorithms with theoretical / experimental results.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Information and Software Technologies, ICIST 2012, held in Kaunas, Lithuania, in September 2012. In both the linguistic and the language engineering community, the creation and use of annotated text collections (or annotated corpora) is currently a hot topic. Annotated texts are of interest for research as well as for the development of natural language pro­ cessing (NLP) applications. Unfortunately, the annotation of text material, especially more interesting linguistic annotation, is as yet a difficult task and can entail a substan­ tial amount of human involvement. Allover the world, work is being done to replace as much as possible of this human effort by computer processing. At the frontier of what can already be done (mostly) automatically we find syntactic wordclass tagging, the annotation of the individual words in a text with an indication of their morpho syntactic classification. This book describes the state of the art in syntactic wordclass tagging. As an attempt to give an overall view of the field, this book is of interest to (at least) two, possibly very different, types of reader. The first type consists of those people who are using, or are planning to use, tagged material and taggers. They will want to know what the possibilities and impossibilities of tagging are, but are not necessarily interested in the internal working of automatic taggers. This, on the other hand, is the main interest of our second type of reader, the builders of automatic taggers and other natural language processing software.

Hypertext, eine neue Art der Informationsdarstellung, ist innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einem auf zahlreichen Fachkonferenzen diskutierten Thema im Umfeld von Informatik, Informationswissenschaft, Künstlicher Intelligenz, Linguistik, Psychologie und Lerntheorie geworden. Die Faszination, die von diesem Medium auf Forschung, Entwicklung und Anwendung gleichermaßen ausgeht, beruht auf der prinzipiell nichtlinearen Organisation der Hypertexteinheiten und den benutzerfreundlichen Formen des ebenfalls nichtlinearen, flexiblen Zugriffs auf die Einheiten in einem Hypertextsystem. In dieser Einführung in die Hypertextmethodik werden die wesentlichen Elemente von Hypertextsystemen, die Informationseinheiten und Verknüpfungsarten sowie die hypertextspezifischen Navigationsformen, ausführlich theoretisch und anschaulich am Beispiel existierender kommerzieller und experimenteller Hypertextsysteme behandelt. Besonderer Wert wird auf den Zusammenhang von Hypertext und Information Retrieval und die Einsatzmöglichkeiten von Hypertext in Lernumgebungen gelegt. In theoretischer Hinsicht wird untersucht, ob sich Hypertextbenutzer mit Vorteil gegenüber anderen Medien die Information erarbeiten können, die sie aktuell in kritischen Situationen benötigen, ob und wodurch also gegenüber traditionellen linearen Formen ein'informationeller Mehrwert'erzielt wird. Außerdem wird die Möglichkeit diskutiert, mit Hilfe von Textanalyseverfahren und Techniken der Wissensrepräsentation Hypertexte aus Texten automatisch aufzubauen. Das Buch enthält eine umfassende Bibliographie und im Anhang ein Glossar und eine strukturierte Beschreibung der wichtigsten gegenwärtig erhältlichen oder in Entwicklung befindlichen Hypertextsysteme. Der Autor, Professor für Informationswissenschaft an der Universität Konstanz, wurde 1990 für dieses Buch mit dem SEL-Preis'Technische Kommunikation'ausgezeichnet.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue, TSD 2013, held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, in September 2013. The 65 papers presented together with 5 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 148 submissions. The main topics of this year's conference was corpora, texts and transcription, speech analysis, recognition and synthesis, and their intertwining within NL dialogue systems. The topics also included speech recognition, corpora and language resources, speech and spoken language generation, tagging, classification and parsing of text and speech, semantic processing of text and speech, integrating applications of text and speech processing, as well as automatic dialogue systems, and multimodal techniques and modelling.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of ten international workshops, OTM Academy, Industry Case Studies Program, EI2N, INBAST, Meta4eS, OnToContent, ORM, SeDeS, SINCOM and SOMOCO 2012, held as part of OTM 2012 in Rome, Italy, in September 2012. The 66 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 127 submissions. The paper cover various aspects of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), middleware, Internet/Web data management, electronic commerce, enterprise modelling, workflow management, knowledge flow, agent technologies, information retrieval, software architectures, service-oriented computing, and cloud computing.

This book is organized into thirteen chapters that range over the relevant approaches and tools in data integration, modeling, analysis and knowledge discovery for signaling pathways. Having in mind that the book is also addressed for students, the contributors present the main results and techniques in an easily accessed and understood way together with many references and instances. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to signaling pathway, including motivations, background knowledge and relevant data mining techniques for pathway data analysis. Chapter 2 presents a variety of data sources and data analysis with respect to signaling pathway, including data integration and relevant data mining applications. Chapter 3 presents a framework to measure the inconsistency between heterogenous biological databases. A GO-based (genome ontology) strategy is proposed to associate different data sources. Chapter 4 presents identification of positive regulation of kinase pathways in terms of association rule mining. The results derived from this project could be used when predicting essential relationships and enable a comprehensive understanding of kinase pathway interaction. Chapter 5 presents graphical model-based methods to identify regulatory network of protein kinases. A framework using negative association rule mining is introduced in Chapter 6 to discover featured inhibitory regulation patterns and the relationships between involved regulation factors. It is necessary to not only detect the objects that exhibit a positive regulatory role in a kinase pathway but also to discover those objects that inhibit the regulation. Chapter 7 presents methods to model ncRNA secondary structure data in terms of stems, loops and marked labels, and illustrates how to find matched structure patterns for a given query. Chapter 8 shows an interval-based distance metric for computing the distance between conserved RNA secondary structures. Chapter 9 presents a framework to explore structural and functional patterns of RNA pseudoknot structure according to probability matrix. Chapter 10 presents methods to model miRNA data and identify miRNA interaction of cross-species and within-species. Chapter 11 presents an approach to measure the importance of miRNA site and the adjacent base by using information redundancy and develops a novel measure to identify strongly correlated infrequent itemsets. The discover association rules not only present important structural features in miRNAs, but also promote a comprehensive understanding of regulatory roles of miRNAs. Chapter 12 presents bioinformatics techniques for protein kinase data management and analysis, kinase pathways and drug targets, and describes their potential application in pharmaceutical industry. Chapter 13 presents a summary of the chapters and give a brief discussion to some emerging issues.

The last decade has been one of dramatic progress in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This hitherto largely academic discipline has found itself at the center of an information revolution ushered in by the Internet age, as demand for human-computer communication and informa­ tion access has exploded. Emerging applications in computer-assisted infor­ mation production and dissemination, automated understanding of news, understanding of spoken language, and processing of foreign languages have given impetus to research that resulted in a new generation of robust tools, systems, and commercial products. Well-positioned government research funding, particularly in the U. S., has helped to advance the state-of-the­ art at an unprecedented pace, in no small measure thanks to the rigorous 1 evaluations. This volume focuses on the use of Natural Language Processing in In­ formation Retrieval (IR), an area of science and technology that deals with cataloging, categorization, classification, and search of large amounts of information, particularly in textual form. An outcome of an information retrieval process is usually a set of documents containing information on a given topic, and may consist of newspaper-like articles, memos, reports of any kind, entire books, as well as annotated image and sound files. Since we assume that the information is primarily encoded as text, IR is also a natural language processing problem: in order to decide if a document is relevant to a given information need, one needs to be able to understand its content.

Information systems are large repositories of factual and inferential knowledge intended to be queried and maintained by a wide variety of users with different backgrounds and work tasks. The community of potential information system users is growing rapidly with advances in hardware and software technology that permit computer/communications support for more and more application areas. Unfortunately, it is often felt that progress in user interface technology has not quite matched that of other areas. Technical solutions such as computer graphics, natural language processing, or man-machine-man communications in office systems are not enough by themselves. They should be complemented by system features that ensure cooperative behavior of the interfaces, thus reducing the training and usage effort required for successful interaction. In analogy to a human dialog partner, we call an interface cooperative if it does not just accept user requests passively or answer them literally, but actively attempts to understand the users'intentions and to help them solve their applica­ tion problems. This leads to the central question addressed by this book: What makes an information systems interface cooperative, and how do we provide capabilities leading to cooperative interfaces? Many answers are possible. A first aspect concerns the formulation and accep­ tance of user requests. Many researchers assume that such requests should be formulated in natural language.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 5th International Information Retrieval Facility Conference, IRFC 2012, held in Vienna, Austria, July 2-3, 2012. The 12 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 17 high-quality submissions. IRF conferences wish to bring young researchers into contact with industry at an early stage. The advances in wireless communication technologies and the proliferation of mobile devices have enabled the realization of intelligent environments for people to c- municate with each other, interact with information-processing devices, and receive a wide range of mobile wireless services through various types of networks and systems everywhere, anytime. A key enabler of this pervasive and ubiquitous connectivity environments is the advancement of software technology in various communication sectors, ranging from communication middleware and operating systems to networking protocols and applications. The international conference series on Mobile Wireless Middleware, Operating Systems, and Applications (MOBILWARE) is dedicated to address emerging topics and challenges in various mobile wireless software-related areas. The scope of the conference includes the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation of middleware, operating systems, and applications for computing and communications in mobile wireless systems. MOBILWARE 2010 was the third edition of this conference, which was made p- sible thanks to the sponsorship of ICST and Create-Net and most importantly the hard work of the TPC and reviewers. Similar to the last successful editions, we had 35 submissions from 23 different countries this year, reflecting the international interest for the conference topics. After a thorough review process, we finalized an excellent technical program including 18 regular papers and 4 short papers.

A big amount of important, ‘economically relevant'information, is buried within the huge mass of multimedia documents that correspond to some form of ‘narrative'description. Due to the ubiquity of these ‘narrative'resources, being able to represent in a general, accurate, and effective way their semantic content – i.e., their key ‘meaning'– is then both conceptually relevant and economically important. In this book, we present the main properties of NKRL (‘Narrative Knowledge Representation Language'), a language expressly designed for representing, in a standardised way, the ‘meaning'of complex multimedia narrative documents. NKRL is a fully implemented language/environment. The software exists in two versions, an ORACLE-supported version and a file-oriented one. The technology of arti?cial intelligence is increasing its importance thanks to the rapid growth of the Internet and computer technology. In Japan, the annual conference series of JSAI (The Japanese Society for Arti?cial Intelligence) has been playing a leading role in promoting AI research, and selected papers of the annual conferences have been published in the LNAI series since 2003. This book consists of award papers from the 21st annual conference of JSAI (JSAI 2007) and selected papers from the four co-located workshops. Seven papers were awarded among more than 335 presentations in the conference and 24 papers were selected from a total of 48 presentations in the co-located workshops: Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics 2007 (LENLS 2007), the International Workshop on Risk Informatics (RI 2007), the 5th Wo- shop on Learning with Logics and Logics for Learning (LLLL 2007), and the 1st International Workshop on Juris-informatics (JURISIN 2007). The award papers from JSAI 2007 underwent a rigorous selection process. Firstly, recommendations were made from three people (Session Chair, session commentator and one PC member) in each session, and then recommended - pers were carefully reviewed and voted for by PC members for?nal selection.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed joint post-proceedings of the 17th and 18th annual conferences of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, JSAI 2003 and JSAI 2004, and co-located international workshops, held in Niigata, Japan in June 2003 and in Kanazawa, Japan in May/June 2004 respectively. It features a number of award winning papers as well as revised full workshop papers from these conferences.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 7th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2006, held in Alicante, Spain, September 2006. This is a special KES conference, as it is the 10th in the series, and as such, it represents an occasion for celebration and an opportunity for reflection. The first KES conference was held in 1997 and was organised by the KES conference founder, Lakhmi Jain. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 the KES conferences were held in Adelaide, Australia. In 2000 the conference moved out of Australia to be held in Brighton, UK; in 2001 it was in Osaka, Japan; in 2002, Crema near Milan, Italy; in 2003, Oxford, UK; in 2004, Wellington, New Zealand; and in 2005, Melbourne, Australia. The next two conferences are planned to be in Italy and Croatia. Delegate numbers have grown from about 100 in 1997, to a regular figure in excess of 500. The conference attracts delegates from many different countries, in Europe, Australasia, the Pacific Rim, Asia and the Americas, and may truly be said to be ‘International'. Formed in 2001, KES International has developed into a worldwide organisation that provides a professional community for researchers in the discipline of knowledge-based and intelligent engineering and information systems, and through this, opportunities for publication, networking and interaction.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Natural Language Processing, FinTAL 2006, held in Turku, Finland in August 2006. The book presents 72 revised full papers together with 1 invited talk and the extended abstracts of 2 invited keynote addresses. The papers address all current issues in computational linguistics and monolingual and multilingual intelligent language processing - theory, methods and applications.

The?fth campaign of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) for Eu- pean languages was held from January to September 2004. Participation in the CLEF campaigns has increased each year and CLEF 2004 was no exception: 55 groups submitted results for one or more of the di?erent tracks compared with 42 groups in the previous year. CLEF 2004 also marked a breaking point with respect to previous campaigns. The focus was no longer mainly concentrated on multilingual document retrieval as in previous years but was diversi?ed to include di?erent kinds of text retrieval across languages (e. g., exact answers in the question-answering track) and retrieval on di?erent kinds of media (i. e., not just plain text but collections containing image and speech as well). In ad- tion, increasing attention was given to issues that regard system usability and user satisfaction with tasks to measure the e?ectiveness of interactive systems or system components being included in both the cross-language question - swering and image retrieval tasks with the collaboration of the coordinators of the interactive track. The campaign culminated in a two-and-a-half-day workshop held in Bath, UK, 15–17 September, immediately following the 8th European Conference on Digital Libraries. The workshop was attended by nearly 100 researchers and s- tem developers.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine in Europe, AIME 2001, held in Cascais, Portugal in July 2001. The 31 revised full papers presented together with 30 posters and two invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 79 submissions. Among the topics addressed in their context on medical information processing are knowledge management, machine learning, data mining, decision support systems, temporal reasoning, case-based reasoning, planning and scheduling, natural language processing, computer vision, image and signal interpretation, intelligent agents, telemedicine, careflow systems, and cognitive modeling.

th This volume contains the papers presented at the 13 International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (EKAW 2002) held in Sig enza, Spain, October 1-4, 2002. Papers were invited on topics related to Knowledge Acquisition, Knowledge Management, Ontologies, and the Semantic Web. A total of 110 papers were submitted. Each submission was evaluated by at least two reviewers. The selection process has resulted in the acceptance of 20 long and 14 short papers for publication and presentation at the conference; an acceptance rate of about 30%. In addition, one invited paper by a keynote speaker is included. This volume contains 8 papers on Knowledge Acquisition, 4 about Knowledge Management, 16 on Ontologies, and 6 papers about the Semantic Web. This was the second time (EKAW 2000 being the first) that the event was organized as a conference rather than as the usual workshop (hence the acronym: European Knowledge Acquisition Workshop). The large number of submissions (110 versus the usual 40-60) is an indication that the scientific community values EKAW as an important event to share experiences in the Knowledge Technology area, worthy of being organized as a prestigious international conference. Knowledge is the fuel of the upcoming Knowledge Economy. Therefore, we believe that conferences such as EKAW, that focus on Knowledge Technologies, will continue to play a major role as a platform for sharing and exchanging experiences and knowledge between key players in the area.

CICLing 2001 is the second annual Conference on Intelligent text processing and Computational Linguistics (hence the name CICLing), see www.CICLing.org. It is intended to provide a balanced view of the cutting edge developments in both theoretical foundations of computational linguistics and practice of natural language text processing with its numerous applications. A feature of the CICLing conferences is their wide scope that covers nearly all areas of computational linguistics and all aspects of natural language processing applications. The conference is a forum for dialogue between the specialists working in these two areas. This year our invited speakers were Graeme Hirst (U. Toronto, Canada), Sylvain Kahane (U. Paris 7, France), and Ruslan Mitkov (U. Wolverhampton, UK). They delivered excellent extended lectures and organized vivid discussions. A total of 72 submissions were received, all but very few of surprisingly high quality. After careful reviewing, the Program Committee selected for presentation 53 of them, 41 as full papers and 12 as short papers, by 98 authors from 19 countries: Spain (19 authors), Japan (15), USA (12), France, Mexico (9 each), Sweden (6), Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Russia, United Arab Emirates (3 each), Argentina (2), Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Ukraine, UK, and Uruguay (1 each).
