This book constitutes the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Formal Engineering Methods, ICFEM 2022, held in Madrid, Spain, in October 2022. Software programs are formal entities with precise meanings independent of their programmers, so the transition from ideas to programs necessarily involves a formalisation at some point. The first part of this graduate-level introduction to formal methods develops an understanding of what constitutes formal methods and what their place is in Software Engineering. It also introduces logics as languages to describe reasoning and the process algebra CSP as a language to represent behaviours. The second part offers specification and testing methods for formal development of software, based on the modelling languages CASL and UML. The third part takes the reader into the application domains of normative documents, human machine interfaces, and security. Use of notations and formalisms is uniform throughout the book. This festschrift was written in honor of Andrew William (Bill) Roscoe on the occasion of his 60th birthday, and features tributes by Sir Tony Hoare, Stephen Brookes, and Michael Wooldridge. Bill Roscoe is an international authority in process algebra, and has been the driving force behind the development of the FDR refinement checker for CSP. He is also world renowned for his pioneering work in analyzing security protocols, modeling information flow, human-interactive security, and much more. Many of these areas are reflected in the 15 invited research articles in this festschrift, and in the presentations at the'BILL-60'symposium held in Oxford, UK, on January 9 and 10, 2017.

This Festschrift volume, dedicated to He Jifeng on the occasion of his 70th birthday in September 2013, includes 24 refereed papers by leading researchers, current and former colleagues, who congratulated at a celebratory symposium held in Shanghai, China, in the course of the 10th International Colloquium on Theoretical Aspects of Computing, ICTAC 2013. The papers cover a broad spectrum of subjects, from foundational and theoretical topics to programs and systems issues and to applications, comprising formal methods, software and systems modeling, semantics, laws of programming, specification and verification, as well as logics. He Jifeng is known for his seminal work in the theories of programming and formal methods for software engineering. He is particularly associated with Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP), the theory of data refinement and the laws of programming, and the rCOS formal method for object and component system construction. His book on UTP with Tony Hoare has been widely read and followed by a large number of researchers, and it has been used in many postgraduate courses. He was a senior researcher at Oxford during 1984-1998, and then a senior research fellow at the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) in Macau during 1998-2005. He has been a professor and currently the Dean of the Institute of Software Engineering at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. In 2005, He Jifeng was elected as an academician to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of York. He won a number of prestigious science and technology awards, including a 2nd prize of Natural Science Award from the State Council of China, a 1st prize of Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education of China, a 1st prize of Technology Innovation from the Ministry of Electronic Industry, and a number awards from Shanghai government.

The present volume contains the proceedings of the Third IPM International Conference on Fundamentals of Software Engineering (FSEN), Kish, Iran, April 15–17, 2009. FSEN 2009 was organized by the School of Computer Science at the Institute for Studies in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) in Iran, in cooperation with the ACM SIGSOFT and IFIP WG 2.2. This conference brought together around 100 researchers and practitioners working on di?erent aspects of formal methods in software engineering from 15 di?erentcountries.ThetopicsofinterestinFSENspanoverallaspects offormal methods,especiallythoserelatedtoadvancingtheapplicationofformalmethods in software industry and promoting their integration with practical engineering techniques. The Program Committee of FSEN 2009 consisted of top researchers from 24 di?erent academic institutes in 11 countries. We received a total of 88 submissions from 25 countries out of which the Program Committee selected 22 as regular papers, 5 as short papers, and 7 as poster presentations in the conferenceprogram.Eachsubmissionwasreviewedbyatleastthreeindependent referees, for its quality, originality, contribution, clarity of presentation, and its relevance to the conference topics. This volume contains the revised versions of the regular and short papers presented at FSEN 2009. ThisvolumecontainstheproceedingsofFM2003,the12thInternationalFormal Methods Europe Symposium which was held in Pisa, Italy on September 8–14, 2003. Formal Methods Europe (FME, www. fmeurope. org) is an independent - sociation which aims to stimulate the use of and research on formal methods for system development. FME conferences began with a VDM Europe symposium in 1987. Since then, the meetings have grown and have been held about once - ery 18 months. Throughout the years the symposia have been notably successful in bringing together researchers, tool developers, vendors, and users, both from academia and from industry. Unlike previous symposia in the series, FM 2003 was not given a speci?c theme. Rather, its main goal could be synthesized as “widening the scope. ” Indeed, the organizers aimed at enlarging the audience and impact of the symposium along several directions. Dropping the su?x ‘E'from the title of the conference re?ects the wish to welcome participation and contribution from every country; also,contributionsfromoutsidethetraditionalFormalMethodscommunitywere solicited. The recent innovation of including an Industrial Day as an important part of the symposium shows the strong commitment to involve industrial p- ple more and more within the Formal Methods community. Even the traditional and rather fuzzy borderline between “software engineering formal methods” and methods and formalisms exploited in di?erent?elds of engineering was so- what challenged.

The third in a series of international conferences on Integrated Formal Methods, IFM 2002, was held in Turku, Finland, May 15–17, 2002. Turku, situated in the south western corner of the country, is the former capital of Finland. The? conference was organized jointly by Abo Akademi University and Turku Centre for Computer Science. The theme of IFM 1999 was the integration of state and behavioral based formalisms. For IFM 2000 this was widened to include all aspects pertaining to the integration of formal methods and formal notations. One of the goals of IFM 2002 was to further investigate these themes. Moreover, IFM 2002 explored the relations between formal methods and graphical notations, especially the industrialstandardlanguageforsoftwaredesign,theUni?edModelingLanguage (UML). The themes of IFM 2002 re?ect what we believe is a growing trend in the Formal Methods and Software Engineering research communities. Over the last threedecades,computerscientistshavedevelopedarangeofformalismsfocusing on particular aspects of behavior or analysis, such as sequential program str- tures,concurrentprogramstructures,dataandinformationstructures,temporal reasoning, deductive proof, and model checking. Much e?ort is now being - voted to integrating these methods in order to combine their advantages and ensure they scale up to industrial needs. Graphical notations are now widely used in software engineering and there is growing recognition of the importance ofprovidingthesewiththeformalunderpinningsandformalanalysiscapabilities found in formal methods.
