This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Dagstuhl-Seminar on Efficient Algorithms for Global Optimization Methods in Computer Vision, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in November 2011. The 8 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected by 12 lectures given at the seminar. The seminar focused on the entire algorithmic development pipeline for global optimization problems in computer vision: modelling, mathematical analysis, numerical solvers and parallelization. In particular, the goal of the seminar was to bring together researchers from all four fields to analyze and discuss the connections between the different stages of the algorithmic design pipeline.

This volume collects the papers accepted for presentation at the 12th Int- national Conference on “Advanced Concepts for Intelligent Vision Systems” (ACIVS 2010). Following the?rst meeting in Baden-Baden (Germany) in 1999, whichwaspartofalargemulticonference,theACIVSconferencethendeveloped into an independent scienti?c event and has ever since maintained the tradition of being a single track conference. ACIVS 2010 attracted computer scientists from 29 di?erent countries, mostly from Europe, Australia, and the USA, but also from Asia. Similar to the digital revolution in photography of fifteen years ago, today digital methods are revolutionizing the way television and movies are being made. With the advent of professional digital movie cameras, digital projector technology for movie theaters, and 3D movies, the movie andtelevision production pipeline is turning all-digital, opening upnumerous new opportunities for the way dynamic scenes are acquired, video footage can be edited, and visual media may be experienced.This state-of-the-art survey provides a compilation of selected articles resulting from a workshop on Video Processing and Computational Video, held at Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in October 2010. The seminar brought together junior and seniorresearchers from computer vision, computer graphics, and image communication, both from academia and industry, to address the challenges in computational video. During this workshop, 43 researchers from all over the world discussed the state of the art, contemporary challenges, and future research in imaging,processing, analyzing, modeling, and rendering of real-world, dynamic scenes.The 8 thoroughly revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 30 lectures given at the seminar. The articles give a good overview of the field of computational video and video processing with a specialfocus on computational photography, video-based rendering, and 3D video.

The pixelization paradigm states as a postulate that pixelization methods are rich and are worth exploring as far as possible. In fact, we think that the strength of these methods lies in their simplicity, in their high-density way of information representation property and in their compatibility with neurocognitive processes. • Simplicity, because pixelization belongs to two-dimensional information visualization methods and its main idea is identifying a “pixel” with an informational entity in order to translate a set of informational entities into an image. • High-density way of information representation property, firstly because pixelization representation contains a third dimension—each pixel's color—and secondly because pixelization is a “compact” (two-dimensional) way of representing information compared with linear one-dimensional representations (Ganascia, p.255). • Compatibility with neurocognitive processes, firstly because we are thr- dimensional beings and thus we are intrinsically better at grasping one- or two-dimensional data, and secondly because the cerebral cortex is typically a bi-dimensional structure where metaphorically the neurons can be assimilated to “pixels,” whose activity plays the role of color (Lévy, p.3). The pixelization paradigm may be studied along two related directions: pixelization and its implementation and pixelization and cognition. The first direction—pixelization and its implementation—may be divided into two parts: pixelization theory and pixelization application.
