The papers feature ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of the Advanced Science and Technology, such as communication and networking; ubiquitous multimedia computing; security technology and information assurance; computer science, software engineering and applications thereof; bio-science and bio-technology; u- and e-service, science and technology; database theory and application; control and automation; signal processing, image processing and pattern recognition; as well as grid and distributed computing.

Since its first edition in 2003, the XML Database Symposium series (XSym) has been a forum for academics, practitioners, users and vendors, allowing all to discuss the use of and synergy between database management systems and XML. The symposia have provided many opportunities for timely discussions on a broad range of topics pertaining to the theory and practice of XML data management and its applications. XSym 2010 continued this XSym tradition with a program consisting of 11 papers and a keynote shared with the 36th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2010). We received 20 paper submissions, out of which 8 papers were accepted as full papers, and 3 as short papers. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous and careful review by four referees. The contributions in these proceedings are a fine sample of the current research in XML query processing, including XPath satisfiability, approximate joins, pattern matching, linear index construction for trees, dynamic labeling, and XQuery update translation based on schema. The papers focus on recent advances in detecting fu- tional dependencies, modeling complex XML twig pattern output, promoting sem- tics capability of XML keys, and searchable compression of Microsoft office do- ments. In addition, we include a paper that shares lessons learned from real XML database development.

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the 10th annual event of the International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing (ICA3PP). ICA3PP is recognized as the main regular event covering the many dimensions of parallel algorithms and architectures, encompassing fundamental theoretical - proaches, practical experimental projects, and commercial components and systems. As applications of computing systems have permeated every aspect of daily life, the power of computing systems has become increasingly critical. Therefore, ICA3PP 2010 aimed to permit researchers and practitioners from industry to exchange inf- mation regarding advancements in the state of the art and practice of IT-driven s- vices and applications, as well as to identify emerging research topics and define the future directions of parallel processing. We received a total of 157 submissions this year, showing by both quantity and quality that ICA3PP is a premier conference on parallel processing. In the first stage, all papers submitted were screened for their relevance and general submission - quirements. These manuscripts then underwent a rigorous peer-review process with at least three reviewers per paper. In the end, 47 papers were accepted for presentation and included in the main proceedings, comprising a 30% acceptance rate.

It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the symposia and workshops on parallel and distributed computing and applications associated with the ICA3PP 2010 conference. These symposia and workshops provide vibrant opportunities for researchers and industry practitioners to share their research experience, original research results and practical development experiences in the new challenging research areas of parallel and distributed computing technologies and applications. It was the first time that the ICA3PP conference series added symposia and wo- shops to its program in order to provide a wide range of topics that extend beyond the main conferences. The goal was to provide a better coverage of emerging research areas and also forums for focused and stimulating discussions. With this objective in mind, we selected three workshops to accompany the ICA3PP 2010 conference: • FPDC 2010, the 2010 International Symposium on Frontiers of Parallel and Distributed Computing • HPCTA 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on High-Performance Computing, Technologies and Applications • M2A 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on Multicore and Mul- threaded Architectures and Algorithms Each of the symposia / workshops focused on a particular theme and complemented the spectrum of the main conference. All papers published in the workshops proce- ings were selected by the Program Committee on the basis of referee reports. Each paper was reviewed by independent referees who judged the papers for originality, quality, contribution, presentation and consistency with the theme of the workshops.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Future Gene- tion Communication and Networking (FGCN 2010) – one of the partnering events of the Second International Mega-Conference on Future Generation Information Te- nology (FGIT 2010). FGCN brings together researchers from academia and industry as well as practit- ners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of communication and networking, including their links to computational sciences, mathematics and information technology. In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 228 papers submitted to the FGCN 2010 Regular Sessions. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were - cepted for FGIT 2010, while 45 papers were accepted the FGCN 2010 Regular S- sions. Of the 45 papers, 8 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume published by Springer in LNCS series. 29 papers are published in this volume, and 8 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of the FGCN 2010 International Advisory Board and members of the International Program Committee, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing this volume of proceedings, including SERSC and Springer.
