This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Programming Multi-Agent Systems held in Toronto, Canada, in May 2010 in conjunction with AAMAS 2010, the 9th International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. The 7 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers cover a broad range of mostly practical topics like decision component of agent systems; practical examples of programming languages; interaction with the environment, and are thus organized in topical sections on reasoning, programming languages, and environments.

This book constitutes the 13th edition of the annual Multi-Agent Programming Contest, MAPC 2018, and presents its participants. The 2018 scenario and all its changes from previous competitions are described in the first contribution, together with a brief description and analysis of the five participating teams and a closer look at the matches. It is followed by a contribution from each team, introducing their methods and tools used to create their agent team and analyzing their performance and the contest.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Human Factors in Computing and Informatics, SouthCHI 2013, held in Maribor, Slovenia, in July 2013. SouthCHI is the successor of the USAB Conference series and promotes all aspects of human-computer interaction. The 38 revised full papers presented together with 12 short papers, 4 posters and 3 doctoral thesis papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 169 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: measurement and usability evaluation; usability evaluation - medical environments; accessibility methodologies; game-based methodologies; Web-based systems and attribution research; virtual environments; design culture for ageing well: designing for'situated elderliness'; input devices; adaptive systems and intelligent agents; and assessing the state of HCI research and practice in South-Eastern Europe.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Declarative Agent Languages and Technologies, DALT 2011, held in Taipei, Taiwan, in May 2011. The volume contains 6 revised selected presented at DALT 2011, 7 best papers from the DALT series over the years, explaining how the research developed and how it influenced and impacted the community, the state-of-the-art and subsequent work, and two invited papers from the DALT Spring School, which took place in April 2011.

DALT aims to make formal methods and declarative technologies and approaches available to and understood by a broader segment of the multi-agent research community; the papers are organized in topical sections on BDI rational agents, communication, coordination and negotiation, as well as social aspects and control systems.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 12th International Workshop on Computational Logic in Multi-Agent Systems, CLIMA XII, held in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2011. The 22 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 43 submissions. The purpose of the CLIMA workshops is to provide a forum for discussing techniques, based on computational logic, for representing, programming and reasoning about agents and multi-agent systems in a formal way. This volume features five thematic special sessions: secrets and trust, knowledge and beliefs, logics for games and social choice, cooperation, logic and languages, and norms and normative multi-agent systems.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Declarative Agent Languages and Technologies, DALT 2009, held in Budapest, Hungary, on May 11, 2009, as a satellite workshop of the 8th International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, AAMAS 2009. The 11 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited lecture and 3 invited papers from the AAMAS main conference - substantially enhanced after the workshop - were carefully selected from 17 initial submissions. The papers combine declarative and formal approaches with engineering and technology aspects of agents and multiagent systems and focus especially on areas such as the semantic web, service-oriented computing, web services, security, and electronic contracting.

The present book includes a set of selected papers from the First International Conf- ence on Agents and Artificial Intelligence (ICAART 2009), held in Porto, Portugal, during January 19–21, 2009. The conference was organized in two simultaneous tracks: “Artificial Intelligence and Agents.” The book is based on the same structure. ICAART 2009 received 161 paper submissions, from more than 37 different co- tries in all continents. After a blind review process, only 26 where accepted as full papers, of which 21 were selected for inclusion in this book, based on the classifi- tions provided by the Program Committee. The selected papers reflect the interdis- plinary nature of the conference. The diversity of topics is an important feature of this conference, enabling an overall perception of several important scientific and tech- logical trends. These high-quality standards will be maintained and reinforced at ICAART 2010, to be held in Valencia, Spain, and in future editions of this conf- ence. Furthermore, ICAART 2009 included five plenary keynote lectures given by Juan Carlos Augusto (University of Ulster), Marco Dorigo (IRIDIA, Free University of Brussels), Timo Honkela (Helsinki University of Technology), Edward H. Shortliffe (Arizona State University) and Paulo Urbano (University of Lisbon). We would like to express our appreciation to all of them and in particular to those who took the time to contribute with a paper to this book.

The earliest work on agents may be traced at least to the?rst conceptualization of the actor model by Carl Hewitt. In a paper in an AI conference in the early 1970s, Hewitt described actors as entities with knowledge and goals. Research on actors continued to focus on AI with the development of the Sprites model in which a monotonically growing knowledge base could be accessed by actors (inspired by what Hewitt called “the Scienti?c Computing Metaphor”). In the late1970sandwellinto 1980s,controversyragedinAIbetweenthosearguingfor declarative languages and those arguing for procedural ones. Actor researchers stood on the side of a procedural view of knowledge, arguing for an open s- tems perspective rather than the closed world hypothesis necessary for a logical, declarativeview. In the open systemsview,agentshad armslength relationships and could not be expected to store consistent facts, nor could the information in a system be considered complete (the “negation as failure” model). Subsequent work on actors, including my own, focused on using actors for general purpose concurrent and distributed programming. In the late 1980s, a number of actor languages and frameworks were built. These included Act++ (in C++) by Dennis Kafura and Actalk (in Smalltalk) by Jean-Pierre Briot. In recent times, the use of the Actor model, in various guises, has proliferated as new parallel and distributed computing platforms and applications have become common:clusters,Webservices,P2Pnetworks,clientprogrammingonmulticore processors, and cloud computing.

ThesearetheproceedingsoftheInternationalWorkshoponProgrammingMulti- Agent Systems (ProMAS 2008), the sixth of a series of workshops that is aimed at discussing and providing an overview of current state-of-the-art technology for programming multi-agent systems. The aim of the ProMAS workshop series is to promote research on progr- ming technologies and tools that can e?ectively contribute to the development and deployment of multi-agent systems. In particular, the workshop promotes the discussion and exchange of ideas concerning the techniques, concepts, - quirements, and principles that are important for establishing multi-agent p- gramming platforms that are useful in practice and have a theoretically sound basis. Topics addressed include but are not limited to the theory and app- cations of agent programming languages, the veri?cation and analysis of agent systems,aswellastheimplementationofsocialstructureinagent-basedsystems (e. g.,roleswithin organizations,coordinationandcommunicationin multi-agent systems). In its previous editions, ProMAS constituted an invaluable occasion bringing together leading researchers from both academia and industry to discuss issues on the design of programming languages and tools for multi-agent systems. We were very pleased to be able to again present a range of high-quality papers at ProMAS 2008. After?ve successful editions of the ProMAS workshop series, which took place during AAMAS 2003 (Melbourne, Australia), AAMAS 2004 (New York, USA), AAMAS 2005 (Utrecht, The Netherlands), AAMAS 2006 (Hakodate, Japan), and AAMAS 2007 (Honolulu, Hawai'i), the sixth edition took place on May 13 in Estoril, Portugal, in conjunction with AAMAS 2008, the main international conference on autonomous agents and MAS.

Multi-agent systems are communities of problem-solving entities that can exhibit varying degrees of intelligence. They can perceive and react to their environment, they can have individual or joint goals, for which they can plan and execute actions. Work on such systems integrates many technologies and concepts in - ti?cial intelligence and other areas of computing as well as other disciplines. The agent paradigm has become widely popular and widely used in recent years, due to its applicability to a large range of domains, from search engines to edu- tional aids to electronic commerce and trade, e-procurement, recommendation systems, simulation and routing, and ambient intelligence, to cite only some. Computational logic provides a well-de?ned, general, and rigorous framework for studying syntax, semantics, and procedures for various capabilities and fu- tionalities of individual agents, as well as interaction amongst agents in multi-agent systems. It also provides a well-de?ned and rigorous framework for implemen- tions, environments, tools, and standards, and for linking together speci?cation and veri?cation of properties of individual agents and multi-agent systems. The CLIMA workshop series was founded to provide a forum for discussing, presenting, and promoting computational logic-based approaches in the design, development, analysis, and application of multi-agent systems.

For the sixth time, the German special interest group on Distributed Arti?cial Intelligence in cooperation with the Steering Committee of MATES organized the German Conference on Multiagent System Technologies – MATES 2008. This conference, which took place during September 23–26, 2008 in Kaisersla- ern, followed a series of successful predecessor conferences in Erfurt (2003, 2004, and 2006), Koblenz (2005), and Leipzig (2007). MATES 2008 was co-located with the 31st German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2008) and was hosted by the University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Arti?cial Intelligence (DFKI). As in recent years, MATES 2008 provided a distinguished, lively, and - terdisciplinary forum for researchers, users, and developers of agent technology to present and discuss the latest advances of research and development in the area of autonomous agents and multiagent systems. Accordingly, the topics of MATES 2008 covered the whole range: from the theory to applications of agent and multiagent technology. In all, 35 papers were submitted from authors from 11 countries. The accepted 16 full papers included in this proceedings volume and presented as talks at the conference were chosen based on a thorough and highly selective review process. Each paper was reviewed and discussed by at least three Program Committee members and revised according to their c- ments. We believe that the papers of this volume are a representative snapshot of current research and contribute to both theoretical and applied aspects of autonomous agents and multiagent systems.

This volume constitutes the revised selected papers of the 6th International Workshop, DALT 2008, held as satellite workshop of AAMAS 2008, the 7th International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, in Estoril, Portugal, on May 12, 2008. The 12 papers, presented together with 3 invited papers, were carefully reviewed and selected from 14 submissions. The workshop provided a discussion forum to both (i) support the transfer of declarative paradigms and techniques to the broader community of agent researchers and practitioners, and (ii) to bring the issue of designing complex agent systems to the attention of researchers working on declarative languages and technologies.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Computational Logic for Multi-Agent Systems, CLIMA VII, held in Hakodate, Japan, in May 2006. It was an associated event of AAMAS 2006, the main international conference on autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. The series of workshops presents current work on application of general and declarative theories.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Programming Multi-Agent Systems, ProMAS 2006, held in Hakodate, Japan, May 2006.
