This volume contains the proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Database Programming Languages (DBPL 2007), held in Vienna, Austria, on September 23–24, 2007. DBPL 2007 was one of 15 meetings co-located with VLDB (the International Conference on Very Large Data Bases). DBPLcontinues to presentthe verybest workat the intersectionof database and programming language research. The proceedings include a paper based on the invited talk by Wenfei Fan and the 16 contributed papers that were selected by the programcommittee from 41 submissions. Every submission was reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. In addition, the program committee sought the opinions of additional referees, selected because of their expertise on particular topics. The?nal selection of papers was made during the last week of July. We would like to thank all of the authors who submitted papers to the c- ference, and the members of the program committee for their excellent work. The program committee did not meet in person, but carried out extensive d- cussions during the electronic PC meeting. We are grateful to Andrei Voronkov for his EasyChair system that made it so easy to manage these discussions. Finally, we would also like to thank Christoph Koch and Gavin Bierman for their assistance and sound counsel, and the organizers of VLDB 2007 for taking care of the local organization of DBPL.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Mining Complex Data, MCD 2007, held in Warsaw, Poland, in September 2007, co-located with ECML and PKDD 2007. The 20 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected; they present original results on knowledge discovery from complex data. In contrast to the typical tabular data, complex data can consist of heterogenous data types, can come from different sources, or live in high dimensional spaces. All these specificities call for new data mining strategies.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Concept Lattices and their Applications, CLA 2006, held in Tunis, Tunisia, October 30-November 1, 2006. The 18 revised full papers together with 3 invited contributions presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. The topics include formal concept analysis, foundations of FCA, mathematical structures related to FCA, relationship of FCA to other methods of data analysis, visualization of data in FCA, and applications of FCA.

I write with pleasurethis forewordto the proceedings of the 7th workshopof the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval (INEX). The increased adoption of XML as the standard for representing a document structure has led to the development of retrieval systems that are aimed at e?ectively accessing XML documents. Providing e?ective access to large collections of XML documents is therefore a key issue for the success of these systems. INEX aims to provide the necessary methodological means and worldwide infrastructures for evaluating how good XML retrieval systems are. Since its launch in 2002, INEX has grown both in terms of number of p- ticipants and its coverage of the investigated retrieval tasks and scenarios. In 2002, INEX started with 49 registered participating organizations, whereas this number was more than 100 for 2008. In 2002, there was one main track, c- cerned with the ad hoc retrieval task, whereas in 2008, seven tracks in addition to the main ad hoc track were investigated, looking at various aspects of XML retrieval, from book search to entity ranking, including interaction aspects.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Dynamic Data Driven Application Systems, DDDAS 2020, held in Boston, MA, USA, in October 2020. The 21 full papers and 14 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions. They cover topics such as: digital twins; environment cognizant adaptive-planning systems; energy systems; materials systems; physics-based systems analysis; imaging methods and systems; and learning systems.

This book contains selected papers from the 7th International Workshop on Accelerating Analytics and Data Management Systems Using Modern Processor and Storage Architectures, ADMS 2016, and the 4th International Workshop on In-Memory Data Management and Analytics, IMDM 2016, held in New Dehli, India, in September 2016. The joint Workshops were co-located with VLDB 2016. The 9 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 18 submissions. They investigate opportunities in accelerating analytics/data management systems and workloads (including traditional OLTP, data warehousing/OLAP, ETL streaming/real-time, business analytics, and XML/RDF processing) running memory-only environments, using processors (e.g. commodity and specialized multi-core, GPUs and FPGAs, storage systems (e.g. storage-class memories like SSDs and phase-change memory), and hybrid programming models like CUDA, OpenCL, and Open ACC. The papers also explore the interplay between overall system design, core algorithms, query optimization strategies, programming approaches, performance modeling and evaluation, from the perspective of data management applications.

This book constitutes the refereed conference proceedings of the 30th British International Conference on Databases, BICOD 2015 - formerly known as BNCOD (British National Conference on Databases) - held in Edinburgh, UK, in July 2015.The 19 revised full papers, presented together with three invitedkeynotes and three invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 37 submissions. Special focus of the conference has been'Data Science'and so the papers cover a wide range of topics related to databases and data-centric computation.

Concurrency in Dependable Computing focuses on concurrency related issues in the area of dependable computing. Failures of system components, be hardware units or software modules, can be viewed as undesirable events occurring concurrently with a set of normal system events. Achieving dependability therefore is closely related to, and also benefits from, concurrency theory and formalisms. This beneficial relationship appears to manifest into three strands of work. Application level structuring of concurrent activities. Concepts such as atomic actions, conversations, exception handling, view synchrony, etc., are useful in structuring concurrent activities so as to facilitate attempts at coping with the effects of component failures. Replication induced concurrency management. Replication is a widely used technique for achieving reliability. Replica management essentially involves ensuring that replicas perceive concurrent events identically. Application of concurrency formalisms for dependability assurance. Fault-tolerant algorithms are harder to verify than their fault-free counterparts due to the fact that the impact of component faults at each state need to be considered in addition to valid state transitions. CSP, Petri nets, CCS are useful tools to specify and verify fault-tolerant designs and protocols. Concurrency in Dependable Computing explores many significant issues in all three strands. To this end, it is composed as a collection of papers written by authors well-known in their respective areas of research. To ensure quality, the papers are reviewed by a panel of at least three experts in the relevant area.

This volume consists of a collection of 28 papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held July 14-27, 1985 in the beautiful resort at Les Arcs, France. The director of this ASI was A. K. Sood and A. H. Qureshi was the co-director. Since its introduction in the early 1970s the relational data model has been widely accepted. Several research and industrial efforts are being undertaken to develop special purpose database machines to implement the relational model. In addition, database machines are being explored for applications such as image processing and information retrieval. In this NATO-ASI the lecturers discussed special purpose database machine architectures from the viewpoint of architecture and hardware detail, software, user needs, theoretical framework and applications. The papers presented were of two types - regular papers and short papers. The research in database machines is being conducted in several countries. This fact is under­ scored when it is noted that papers in this volume are authored by researchers in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Turkey, U.K. and U.S.A. The first paper discusses the experience and applications of users with a commercially available database machine. In the following eight papers the characteristics of six database machines are discussed. The second, third and fourth papers deal with the RDBM project at the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany). Zeidler discusses the design objectives, architecture and system design of RDBM. Teich presents the hardware utilized for sorting.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 38th Conference on Current Trends in Theory and Practice of Computer Science, SOFSEM 2012, held in Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic, in January 2012. The 43 revised papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 121 submissions. The book also contains 11 invited talks, 10 of which are in full-paper length. The contributions are organized in topical sections named: foundations of computer science; software and Web engineering; cryptography, security, and verification; and artificial intelligence.

Following five successful workshops in the previous five years, the Rendering Workshop is now well established as a major international forum and one of the most reputable events in the field of realistic image synthesis. Including the best 31 papers which were carefully evaluated out of 68 submissions the book gives an overview on hierarchical radiosity, Monte Carlo radiosity, wavelet radiosity, nondiffuse radiosity, and radiosity performance improvements. Some papers deal with ray tracing, reconstruction techniques, volume rendering, illumination, user interface aspects, and importance sampling. Also included are two invited papers by James Arvo and Alain Fournier. As is the style of the Rendering Workshop, the contributions are mainly of algorithmic nature, often demonstrated by prototype implementations. From these implementations result numerous color images which are included as appendix. The Rendering Workshop proceedings are certainly an obligatory piece of literature for all scientists working in the rendering field, but they are also very valuable for the practitioner involved in the implementation of state of the art rendering system certainly influencing the scientific progress in this field.

Most of the papers in this volume were presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop High Performance Computing: Technology and Application, held in Cetraro, Italy from 24 to 26 of June, 1996. The main purpose of the Workshop was to discuss some key scientific and technological developments in high performance computing, identify significant trends and defme desirable research objectives. The volume structure corresponds, in general, to the outline of the workshop technical agenda: general concepts and emerging systems, software technology, algorithms and applications. One of the Workshop innovations was an effort to extend slightly the scope of the meeting from scientific/engineering computing to enterprise-wide computing. The papers on performance and scalability of database servers, and Oracle DBMS reflect this attempt We hope that after reading this collection of papers the readers will have a good idea about some important research and technological issues in high performance computing. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between Grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments. This, the third issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains two kinds of papers: Firstly, a selection of the best papers from the third International Conference on Data Management in Grid and Peer-to-Peer Systems, Globe 2010, and secondly, a selection of 6 papers from the 18 papers submitted in response to the call for papers for this issue. The topics covered by this special issue include replication, the semantic web, information retrieval, data storage, source selection, and large-scale distributed applications.

This volume contains the papers presented at ESA 2009: The 17th Annual - ropean Symposium on Algorithms, September 7–9, 2009. ESA has been held annually since 1993, and seeks to cover both theoretical and engineering aspects of algorithms. The authors were asked to classify their paper under one or more categories as described in Fig. 1. Since 2001, ESA has been the core of the larger ALGO conference, which typically includes several satellite conferences. ALGO 2009 was held at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The?ve members of the ALGO 2009 - ganizing Committee were chaired by Thore Husfeldt. The ESA submission deadline was April 12, Easter Sunday. This was clearly an error and we o?er profuse apologies for this mistake. Albeit no excuse, the hard constraints we faced were (a) ICALP noti?cation, April 6, and (b) ESA in Copenhagen, September 7. Between these two endpoints we needed to design a schedule that allowed modifying ICALP rejections for resubmission (1 week), Program Committee deliberations (7 weeks), preparing?nal versions (4 weeks), and, to prepare, publish, and transport the proceedings (9 weeks). ESA 2009had 272submissions ofwhich 14 werewithdrawn overtime. Of the remaining 222 submissions to Track A (Design and Analysis), 56 were accepted. Of the remaining 36 submissions to Track B (Engineering and Applications), 10 were accepted. This gives an acceptance rate of slightly under 25%.

Since its first edition in 2003, the XML Database Symposium series (XSym) has been a forum for academics, practitioners, users and vendors, allowing all to discuss the use of and synergy between database management systems and XML. The previous symposia have provided opportunities for timely discussions on a broad range of topics pertaining to the theory and practice of XML data management and its applications. XSym 2009 continued this XSym tradition with a program consisting of 15 papers and a keynote shared with the 12th International Symposium on Database Programming Languages (DBPL 2009). We received 26 paper submissions, out of which eight papers were accepted as full papers, and seven as short/demo papers. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous and careful review by four referees for long papers and three for the short ones. The contributions in these proceedings are a fine sample of the very best current - search in XML query processing, including full text, keyword and loosely structured queries, stream querying and joins, and materialized views. Among new theoretical advances we included work on a lambda-calculus model of XML and XPath, on m- ping from the enhanced entity-relationship conceptual model to the W3C XML Schema Language, on transactions, and extensions to XPath. Finally, work on data parallel algorithms, compression, and practical aspects of XQuery, including query forms and the use of Prolog are also part of this volume.

Asia Information Retrieval Symposium (AIRS) 2006 was the third AIRS conf- ence in the series established in 2004.The?rst AIRS washeld in Beijing, China, and the 2nd AIRS was held in Cheju, Korea. The AIRS conference series traces its roots to the successful Information Retrieval with Asian Languages (IRAL) workshop series which started in 1996. The AIRS series aims to bring together international researchers and dev- opers to exchange new ideas and the latest results in information retrieval. The scope of the conference encompassed the theory and practice of all aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video, and multimedia data. Wearehappyto reportthatAIRS2006received148submissions,thehighest number since the conference series started in 2004. Submissions came from Asia and Australasia, Europe, and North America. We accepted 34 submissions as regular papers (23%) and 24 as poster papers (16%). We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to the conf- ence, the seven area chairs, who worked tirelessly to recruit the program c- mittee members and oversaw the review process, and the program committee members and their secondary reviewers who reviewed all the submissions.

This book presents the latest findings in the areas of data management and smart computing, big data management, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, along with advances in network technologies. The book is a collection of peer-reviewed research papers presented at Sixth International Conference on Data Management, Analytics and Innovation (ICDMAI 2022), held virtually during January 14–16, 2022. This, the 39th issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains extended and revised versions of seven papers selected from the 37 contributions presented at the 28th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, DEXA 2017, held in Lyon, France, in August 2017. Topics covered include knowledge bases, clustering algorithms, parallel frequent itemset mining, model-driven engineering, virtual machines, recommendation systems, and federated SPARQL query processing.

In 1829, Louis Braille, a young organist in a Paris church, blind since age 3, invented the well-known code for the blind, still in common use today all over the world and named after him. Braille himself modified his code in 1834, and there have been several modifications since. However, the basic design of this code, where each character is represented by a group of 3 x 2 dots, has remained intact. The dots are embossed on thick paper and each can be raised or flat (i. e., present or absent). Each dot is therefore equivalent to one bit of information. As a result, the Braille code (Figure 1) is a 6-bit code and can therefore represent 64 symbols (the code of six flat dots indicates a blank space). Braille's followers extended the capabilities of his code in several ways. One im­ portant extension is contractions. These are letters that, when they stand alone, mean words. For example, the letter'b'standing alone (or with punctuation) means the word'but,'the letter'e'standing alone means'every,'and'p'means'people.'Another extension is short-form words. These are combinations of two or more codes that mean an entire word (short-form words may contain contractions). For example,'ab'means'about,''rcv'means'receive,'and'(the)mvs'means'themselves.'(The'the'in parentheses is a contraction, dots 2-3-4-6.) Figure 2 shows some examples of these special codes.

In the past five years, the field of electrostatic discharge (ESD) control has under­ gone some notable changes. Industry standards have multiplied, though not all of these, in our view, are realistic and meaningful. Increasing importance has been ascribed to the Charged Device Model (CDM) versus the Human Body Model (HBM) as a cause of device damage and, presumably, premature (latent) failure. Packaging materials have significantly evolved. Air ionization techniques have improved, and usage has grown. Finally, and importantly, the government has ceased imposing MIL-STD-1686 on all new contracts, leaving companies on their own to formulate an ESD-control policy and write implementing documents. All these changes are dealt with in five new chapters and ten new reprinted papers added to this revised edition of ESD from A to Z. Also, the original chapters have been augmented with new material such as more troubleshooting examples in Chapter 8 and a 20-question multiple-choice test for certifying operators in Chapter 9. More than ever, the book seeks to provide advice, guidance, and practical ex­ amples, not just a jumble of facts and generalizations. For instance, the added tailored versions of the model specifications for ESD-safe handling and packaging are actually in use at medium-sized corporations and could serve as patterns for many readers.

High Performance Computing Systems and Applications contains a selection of fully refereed papers presented at the 14th International Conference on High Performance Computing Systems and Applications held in Victoria, Canada, in June 2000. This book presents the latest research in HPC Systems and Applications, including distributed systems and architecture, numerical methods and simulation, network algorithms and protocols, computer architecture, distributed memory, and parallel algorithms. Graph-based representation of images is becoming a popular tool since it represents in a compact way the structure of a scene to be analyzed and allows for an easy manipulation of sub-parts or of relationships between parts. Therefore, it is widely used to control the different levels from segmentation to interpretation. With the end of Moore's Law, domain-specific architecture (DSA) has become a crucial mode of implementing future computing architectures. This book examines the recent trend of extending data dependencies to adapt to rich data types in order to address variety and veracity issues in big data.
