This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th Annual Conference on Theory and Applications of Models of Computation, TAMC 2014, held in Singapore, in May 2015. The 35 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 78 submissions. The papers treat all topics relating to the theory and applications of models computation, for example recursion theory and mathematical logic; computational complexity and Boolean functions; graphy theory; quantum computing; parallelism and statistics; learning, automata and probabilistic models; parameterised complexity.

The 31 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. Bringing together a wide range of researchers with interests in computational theory and applications, the papers address the three main themes of the conference which were computability, complexity, and algorithms and present current research in these fields with aspects to theoretical computer science, algorithmic mathematics, and applications to the physical sciences.

This book constitutes the refereed conference proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Algorithms and Complexity, CIAC 2013, held in Barcelona, Spain, during May 22-24, 2013. The 31 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 75 submissions. The papers present current research in all aspects of computational complexity and the use, design, analysis and experimentation of efficient algorithms and data structures.

Combinatorial mathematics has been pursued since time immemorial, and at a reasonable scientific level at least since Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). It ren­ dered many services to both pure and applied mathematics. Then along came the prince of computer science with its many mathematical problems and needs - and it was combinatorics that best fitted the glass slipper held out. Moreover, it has been gradually more and more realized that combinatorics has all sorts of deep connections with'mainstream areas'of mathematics, such as algebra, geometry and probability. This is why combinatorics is now apart of the standard mathematics and computer science curriculum. This book is as an introduction to extremal combinatorics - a field of com­ binatorial mathematics which has undergone aperiod of spectacular growth in recent decades. The word'extremal'comes from the nature of problems this field deals with: if a collection of finite objects (numbers, graphs, vectors, sets, etc.) satisfies certain restrictions, how large or how small can it be? For example, how many people can we invite to a party where among each three people there are two who know each other and two who don't know each other? An easy Ramsey-type argument shows that at most five persons can attend such a party. Or, suppose we are given a finite set of nonzero integers, and are asked to mark an as large as possible subset of them under the restriction that the sum of any two marked integers cannot be marked.

The communication complexity of two-party protocols is an only 15 years old complexity measure, but it is already considered to be one of the fundamen­ tal complexity measures of recent complexity theory. Similarly to Kolmogorov complexity in the theory of sequential computations, communication complex­ ity is used as a method for the study of the complexity of concrete computing problems in parallel information processing. Especially, it is applied to prove lower bounds that say what computer resources (time, hardware, memory size) are necessary to compute the given task. Besides the estimation of the compu­ tational difficulty of computing problems the proved lower bounds are useful for proving the optimality of algorithms that are already designed. In some cases the knowledge about the communication complexity of a given problem may be even helpful in searching for efficient algorithms to this problem. The study of communication complexity becomes a well-defined indepen­ dent area of complexity theory. In addition to a strong relation to several funda­ mental complexity measures (and so to several fundamental problems of com­ plexity theory) communication complexity has contributed to the study and to the understanding of the nature of determinism, nondeterminism, and random­ ness in algorithmics. There already exists a non-trivial mathematical machinery to handle the communication complexity of concrete computing problems, which gives a hope that the approach based on communication complexity will be in­ strumental in the study of several central open problems of recent complexity theory.

The 34 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 56 submissions and focus on geometric transforms, discrete and combinatorial tools for image segmentation and analysis, discrete and combinatorial topology, discrete shape representation, recognition and analysis, models for discrete geometry, morphological analysis and discrete tomography.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 6th International Computer Science Symposium in Russia, CSR 2011, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in June 2011. The 29 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 76 submissions. The scope of topics of the symposium was quite broad and covered basically all areas of the foundations of theoretical computer science.

The Fifth Workshop on Approximation and Online Algorithms (WAOA 2007) focused on the design and analysis of algorithms for online and computationally hard problems. Both kinds of problems have a large number of applications from a variety of?elds. WAOA 2007 took place in Eilat, Israel, during October 11–12, 2007. The workshop was part of the ALGO 2007 event that also hosted ESA 2007, and PEGG 2007. The previous WAOA workshops were held in Budapest (2003), Rome (2004), Palma de Mallorca (2005) and Zurich (2006). The proceedings of these previous WAOA workshops have appeared as LNCS volumes 2909, 3351, 3879 and 4368, respectively. Topics of interest for WAOA 2007 were: algorithmic game theory, appro- mation classes, coloring and partitioning, competitive analysis, computational?nance, cuts and connectivity, geometric problems, inapproximability results, mechanism design, network design, packing and covering, paradigms for design and analysis of approximation and online algorithms, randomization techniques, real-world applications, and scheduling problems. In response to the call for - pers, we received 56 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three referees, and the vast majority by at least four referees. The submissions were mainly judged on originality, technical quality, and relevance to the topics of the conference. Based on the reviews, the Program Committee selected 22 papers. We are grateful to Andrei Voronkov for providing the EasyChair conference system which was used to manage the electronic submissions, the review process, and the electronic PC meeting. It made our task much easier.

In the past, it was held in Tokyo (1990), Taipei (1991), Nagoya (1992), Hong Kong (1993), Beijing (1994), Cairns (1995), Osaka (1996), Singapore (1997), Daejeon (1998), Chennai (1999), Taipei (2000), Christchurch (2001), Vancouver (2002), Kyoto (2003), Hong Kong (2004), Hainan (2005), Kolkata (2006), and Sendai (2007). ISAACis anannualinternationalsymposiumthatcoversthe verywide range of topics in the?eld of algorithms and computation. The main purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for researchers working in algorithms and theoryofcomputationfrom allovertheworld.In responseto ourcallfor papers, we received 229 submissions from 40 countries. The task of selecting the papers in this volume was done by our Program Committee and many other external reviewers. After an extremely rigorous review process and extensive discussion, the Committee selected 78 papers. We hope all accepted papers will eventually appear in scienti?c journals in a more polished form. Two special issues, one of Algorithmica and one of the International Journal on Computational Geometry and Applications, with selected papers from ISAAC 2008 are in preparation.

This volume features the refereed proceedings from the 34th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming, held in Wroclaw, Poland in July 2007. Seventy-six full papers are presented, together with four invited lectures. The papers are grouped into three major tracks covering algorithms, automata, complexity, and games; logic, semantics, and theory of programming; and security and cryptography foundations.
