This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings on Learning and Intelligent Optimization, LION 14, held in Athens, Greece, in May 2020. The 37 full papers presented together with one invited paper have been carefully reviewed and selected from 75 submissions. LION deals with designing and engineering ways of'learning'about the performance of different techniques, and ways of using past experience about the algorithm behavior to improve performance in the future. Intelligent learning schemes for mining the knowledge obtained online or offline can improve the algorithm design process and simplify the applications of high-performance optimization methods. Combinations of different algorithms can further improve the robustness and performance of the individual components. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LION 14 was not held as a physical meeting.

Social systems are among the most complex known. This poses particular problems for those who wish to understand them. The complexity often makes analytic approaches infeasible and natural language approaches inadequate for relating intricate cause and effect. However, individual- and agent-based computational approaches hold out the possibility of new and deeper understanding of such systems. Simulating Social Complexity examines all aspects of using agent- or individual-based simulation. This approach represents systems as individual elements having each their own set of differing states and internal processes. The interactions between elements in the simulation represent interactions in the target systems. What makes these elements'social'is that they are usefully interpretable as interacting elements of an observed society. In this, the focus is on human society, but can be extended to include social animals or artificial agents where such work enhances our understanding of human society. The phenomena of interest then result (emerge) from the dynamics of the interaction of social actors in an essential way and are usually not easily simplifiable by, for example, considering only representative actors. The introduction of accessible agent-based modelling allows the representation of social complexity in a more natural and direct manner than previous techniques. In particular, it is no longer necessary to distort a model with the introduction of overly strong assumptions simply in order to obtain analytic tractability. This makes agent-based modelling relatively accessible to a range of scientists. The outcomes of such models can be displayed andanimated in ways that also make them more interpretable by experts and stakeholders. This handbook is intended to help in the process of maturation of this new field. Metadata and semantic research is a growing complex ecosystem of conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and technological frameworks, offering innovative computational solutions in the design and development of computer-based systems. Within this perspective, researchers working in the area need to further develop and integrate a broad range of methods, results, and solutions coming from different areas. MTSR has been designed as a forum allowing researchers to present and discuss specialized results as general contributions to the field. This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the 4th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research (MTSR 2010), held in Alcala de Henares––a world heritage city and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes––at the University of Alcala (October 20–22, 2010). The first MTSR conference was held online in 2005, followed by two more editions: in Corfu (2007) and in Milan (2009). The experience acquired during the past five years, and the warm welcome of MTSR by the research community, encouraged us to organize this new edition of the series, and turn it into a yearly event. According to the number and quality of the contributions submitted for revision, our 2010 effort was again a considerable success.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the Industrial Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2009) held in Leipzig (www.data-mining-forum.de). For this edition the Program Committee received 130 submissions. After the pe- review process, we accepted 32 high-quality papers for oral presentation that are included in this book. The topics range from theoretical aspects of data mining to app- cations of data mining, such as on multimedia data, in marketing, finance and telec- munication, in medicine and agriculture, and in process control, industry and society. Ten papers were selected for poster presentations that are published in the ICDM Poster Proceedings Volume by ibai-publishing (www.ibai-publishing.org). In conjunction with ICDM two workshops were run focusing on special hot app- cation-oriented topics in data mining. The workshop Data Mining in Marketing DMM 2009 was run for the second time. The papers are published in a separate workshop book “Advances in Data Mining on Markting” by ibai-publishing (www.ibai-publishing.org). The Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning for Multimedia Data CBR-MD ran for the second year. The papers are published in a special issue of the International Journal of Transactios on Case-Based Reasoning (www.ibai-publishing.org/journal/cbr).

This year the CDVE conference celebratedits fourth annual eventin an exciting city—Shanghai, China. The cooperative design, visualization and engineering communitysensedtheeconomicpulseofanewgianteconomywherecooperation is vital for its success. This year we received a large number of papers from all over the world. In addition to many submissions from Europe, we received more papers from Asia and China this time. Many authors from key Chinese research centers and national projects presented their papers, which gave us insight into the progress of research and development in this giant economy. From a technical point of view, as a major trend in cooperative design, vi- alization, engineering and other applications, advanced Web-based cooperation technology stands out by itself. Many papers re?ect the research in this aspect with very convincing results. Web-based cooperative working applications have been emerging strongly since the wide availability and accessibility of the WWW. It is a form of sharing andcollaboratingbyitsnature.Itissuitable forthe cooperationofamuchwider range of users. In the?eld of cooperative engineering, new?ndings and new results were presented. Among all, work?ow technology was recognized as a key element for successful cooperative engineering. According to these new?ndings, only Web-based cooperation tools and shared databases are not enough for coop- ative engineering. Work?ow-based methodology should be introduced to gu- antee the integration and coordination of the whole life cycle process of products.
