The introduction of threshold concepts is a way of addressing the concerns raised following the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), when media commentators argued passionately for an overhaul of business education. The plea for Business Schools to reform their approaches included many, but most notably – a greater emphasis on ethics and corporate governance and a move away from the siloed approach of producing the so-called “I-shaped” graduate to a “T-shaped” graduates – that is, a graduate with specialist knowledge that is capable to think outside of the silo through a more “interdisciplinary” approach to problem solving. This call for a change in emphasis necessitated the need to redesign the curriculum with an increasing focus on the non-disciplinary graduate attributes that are often crowed-out in the ‘busy'business curriculum. This push for change greatly increased the relevance and role of threshold concepts as a tool for delivering effective change, even though threshold concepts did not enter directly into the conversation. The fact that threshold concepts constitute the building blocks to the attainment of the graduate attributes makes them an integral part of the strategy supporting the views promulgated in the aftermath of the GFC. However embedding threshold concepts in the curriculum are far from being as simplistic as it may first seem. Threshold concepts cannot be embedded effectively without a reconceptualization of the curriculum that takes into account its various characteristics, for example, the approach to teaching and learning, the overall learning experience and the method and design of assessment. Attempting to make changes at fringes of the curriculum will result at best in marginal gains in student learning. There are a number of examples in this special issue that highlight the need to take a whole-of-course approach to redesigning the curriculum when embedding threshold concepts. Simply bolting on threshold concepts to existing subjects will have minimal positive effects when compared to a whole-of-course approach. It requires reflection and re-design of the entire curriculum such that the threshold concepts constitute the backbone to the entire degree program. Such an approach may result in a radically different course structure as one paper in this special issue highlights when applied to one subject.

Das Ziel ist, die Regelungen des IAS 17 eindeutig und klar zu gestalten. Darüber hinaus ist den Abschlussadressaten eine vollständige und verständliche Einsicht in die aus Leasingverhältnissen entstandenen Forderungen und Verbindlichkeiten eines Unternehmens zu gewährleisten. Im Zuge dieses Projektes veröffentlichten die Standardsetter im März 2009 das Discussion Paper 2009/1'Leases-Preliminary Views'und anschließend im August 2010 den ersten Exposure Draft ED/2010/9. Aufgrund der zahlreichen kritischen Stellungnahmen während der Kommentierungsfrist wurde daraufhin am 16.05.2013 der überarbeitete Re-Exposure Draft ED/2013/6'Leases'vorgestellt. This study elaborates to which extend German small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses could benefit from the implementation of a strategic cross-border synergy management. The study is based on a single case study deriving the research hypotheses and a survey investigating cross-border interaction throughout a sample of small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses. Based on the research findings, this paper proposes a holistic framework, designed for strategists of small and medium-sized manufacturing business. It outlines the establishment of the cross-border synergy management concept as part of the corporate strategy and the efficient and effective management of international interaction. ‘Synergies are not realized by themselves - they have to be identified and actively developed within a professionally coordinate process. Management of synergy seeking organizations is asked for intensive efforts beyond daily operations'(Weber and Roventa, 2006).

Let's face it, most bosses don't encourage us to share our differences. Indeed, many people are taught that loyal employees accept corporate values, policies, and decisions—never challenging or questioning them. If we want to hold on to our jobs and move up in our organizations, stifling conflict is the safest way to do it—or so we believe.And it is not just with our bosses that we fear raising a dissenting opinion. We worry about what our peers and even our subordinates may think of us. We don't want to embarrass ourselves or create a bad impression. We don't want to lose others'respect or risk rejection.We often associate conflict with its negative form—petty bickering, heated arguing, a bloody fight. But conflict can also be a source of creative energy; when handled constructively by both parties, differences can lead to a healthy and fruitful collaboration, creation, or construction of new knowledge or solutions. When we silence conflict, we avoid the possibility of negative conflict, but we also miss the potential for constructive conflict.Worse yet, as Leslie Perlow documents, the act of silencing conflict may create the consequences we most dread. The Fourth Industrial Revolution while creating many new opportunities, is inevitably going to lead to uncertainty around specific jobs and roles, particularly those of knowledge workers and in the innovation economy.
