- Abstract
The International Conference on Production Research has a good tradition: The fIrst Conference was held in Birmingham 1971 with 61 participants. With respect to the decision that the Conference should be held every second year, by this time the Conference has been held in the following countries: Birmingham (1971, UK), Copenhagen (1973, Denmark), Amhurst (1975, USA), Tokyo (1977, Japan), Amsterdam (1979, The Netherlands), Novi Sad (1981, Yugoslavia), Windsor (1983, Canada), Stuttgart (1985, Germany), and the next Conference will take place in Cincinnatti (1987, USA). The number of submitted abstracts and papers was continuously increas ing such that the Programme Committee of this actual 8th Conference on Production Research has been forced to introduce a further refereeing procedure. Each submitted abstract was presented to at least two referees. This resulted not only in a reduction of the number of presented full papers and poster contributions but, as the Programme Committee and the Editiors hope, it led also to a considerable increase in the scientifIc quality of this 8th International Conference on Production Research. The preceeding conference in Windsor, Canada, was dedicated to the topic: Production Research as a Means of Productivity Improvement. We don't believe that this statement has become untrue in the meanwhile.

- Abstract
Alan M. Rugman's and Cecilia Brain's paper examines the R&D and strate gies of the world's largest finns in the phannaceuticals sector and finds a high degree of intra-regional sales. R&D and sales are more concentrated within North America and Europe than in Asia. In addition, the relative size of the US market, compared to other parts of the triad, creates imbalances with respect to R&D, sales and international strategy. The paper written by Bruce Kogut and Anca Metiu addresses the question of what limits the international distribution of work between rich and poor coun tries in the software industry. Their research reveals a convergence among co located and distributed projects. The results indicate that the managerial experi ence to support global outsourcing of intellectual labor is already advanced, while creativity remains more likely to be located in rich countries. lohn Cantwell, Katherina Glac, and Rebecca Harding analyze the extent and the patterns of specialization of the internationalization of R&D since 1969 by the largest Swiss finns abroad, and by the largest non-Swiss finns in Switzer land. They find out that Swiss-owned finns abroad access technologies in the primary fields of their own industry, while foreign-owned finns conducting re search in Switzerland demonstrate more technological diversification away from their own primary fields and into sources of local Swiss traditional technological strengths.

- Abstract
The papers in volume 6 of Research in Competence-Based Management identify, elaborate theoretically, and investigate empirically a number of new kinds of dynamics in industries and product markets. In so doing, the papers develop some important new competence perspectives on both traditional and contemporary industry dynamics. Most approaches to developing competence theory have adopted an'inside-out'approach, i.e. micro-level analyses of sources of organizational competence lead to theory that predicts industry-level interactions and outcomes. The papers in this volume, however, largely adopt an'outside-in'approach to theory development that suggests how further understanding of firm-level competences may be enabled through macro-level analyses of the resources and capabilities organizations must develop to participate in new kinds of industry and product-market dynamics.

- Abstract
This third volume of'Research in Competence-Based Management'(RCBM) continues the launch of a long-awaited outlet for peer-reviewed research papers contributing to advancement of competence-based management theory. Each volume in'RCBM'will be focused on a key aspect of competence theory. The focus in this volume on'Understanding Growth: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Diversification'addresses key processes essential to successful organization competence building, leveraging, and maintenance. The first set of papers in this volume explores the importance of entrepreneurial motivation in changing markets, as well as strategies for internal versus external funding and organization of entrepreneurial ventures. A second set of papers addresses some key issues in innovation in small and large firms, as well as the competence building process during technological innovation. Papers on diversification and alliances investigate the role of competence leveraging as a driver of diversification, as well as decision-making in innovation that can lead to diversification, cultivating institutions for improving innovation performance, and improving alliance management capability.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.3, University of Stuttgart (Institute for International and Strategic Management), language: English, abstract: This paper hopes to answer how increasing uncertainty is impacting International Management and how new and innovative companies like Tesla Inc conduct international expansion. Economic activities in the 21st century, are characterized by dynamic global competition, the increasing interdependence and internationalization of economic relations and the resulting merging of world markets. With the continuous expansion of world trade and investment, with factors of production being highly mobile, and with the sources of innovation becoming increasingly global, an increasingly larger share of the global economy is reasonably accurately characterized as “open” it est as being exposed to the forces of global competition, and to the international flows of capital, technology and skilled labor. Yet, the belief in globalization and free trade seems to be in disarray since the shocks of Brexit and Trump in 2016. In various regions of the world, a flare-up of nationalism, protectionism and trade barriers is creating a politically and economically volatile atmosphere. While 2019 and 2020 brought new obstacles - from customs tariffs to a global pandemic - this has led to a shift in framework conditions rather than an end to international competition. In addition, a lot of companies across various business sectors are entangled in extensive and expensive investment or restructuring programs brought upon by the ever-increasing pace of technological, sociological and legal developments. Still, there is uncertainty if these investments will one day pay off or turn out the be a charge in the wrong direction. Between 1970 and 2018, FDI grew from 14.2 billion to 1.43 trillion US dollars, an increase of over 900 percent. Based on this rapid development, participation in international competition has become a matter of course - if not a necessity - for many companies, and their attention is focused on efficient conduct and value-adding administering of international activities. This begs the question how internationally active companies with a global and decentralized value chain can fight rising uncertainty and react to constantly changing environments? How can these companies not only hold on to existing business but expand their dominance in the market against the backdrop of uncertainty? Are established strategy models such as Ghemawat's AAA model still applicable today, do they need to be revised or is there even a need for completely new approaches?

- Abstract
This book presents a systematic literature review of 156 published papers on business model innovation (BMI). The aim is to identify and integrate the different theoretical perspectives, analytical levels, and empirical contexts in order to deepen understanding of this complex phenomenon. The authors conduct an inductive thematic analysis based on an informal ontological classification that identifies 56 key themes. Within each theme, discussion focuses on thematic patterns, potential inconsistencies and debates, and future directions and opportunities for research. The book makes a number of significant contributions to the field. First, it offers a deeper understanding of the evolution of research on BMI through an ontological map that identifies the key thematic areas in the literature. Second, a multilevel model is developed that clarifies the concept of BMI by identifying its drivers, contingencies, and outcomes. Third, the authors identify clear and specificdirections for further research and offer suggestions on research design, creating an informative road map for the future. The book will be of value both to scholars and researchers and to practitioners.

- Abstract
Strategy and finance are closely interrelated in the practice of management. With the increased informational demands resulting from regulatory changes such as Sarbanes Oxley and Regulation Fair Disclosure, the boundary between the roles of CEO and CFO has become blurred. Moreover, the global financial crisis has made the interdependence between corporate financial policies and firms'strategies painfully salient. In academic research however, the two fields have by and large developed independently of each other. Advances in Strategic Management 31 (Finance and Strategy) fills this gap with rigorous research papers that bridge the strategy and finance fields by building on them. It encompasses a range of combinations among the two main subdivisions of strategy research - corporate strategy and business (competitive) strategy - and the two main subdivisions of finance research - corporate finance and capital markets. It includes theoretical and empirical contributions, and spans different underlying disciplines and research methodologies, consistent with the variety that exists amongst these two fields.

The proposed book is intended to provide a conceptual framework of ‘Flexible Enterprise'supported by researches/case applications in various types of flexibilities exhibited by a flexible enterprise. The selected papers from a variety of issues concerning the planning and operation of a flexible enterprise are organized into following four parts:I Enterprise and Strategic FlexibilityII Organizational FlexibilityIII Business Process and Information Systems FlexibilityIV Operations Flexibility

- Abstract
YOU HAVE A BRILLIANT NEW STRATEGY. NOW IT'S TIME TO EXECUTE. Businesses spend a combined total of $47 billion annually on strategy consulting. Approximately 90 percent of strategic change initiatives fail to deliver the intended results. Something isn't adding up. As companies all over the world concentrate on revisiting, revising, and remaking their strategies, they forget the next step: making sure the strategy happens. So it turns out that billions of dollars are spent on brilliant ideas--but not brilliant results. In this groundbreaking book, business strategy experts Liz Mellon and Simon Carter provide a solution: THE STRATEGY OF EXECUTION. The authors break down the process of ensuring that your new strategy translates into measurable profits and growth into five fundamental and profoundly important steps: MOBILIZE THE VILLAGE: Get your senior executives to embrace the new strategy and actively engage with it. GATHER THE ELDERS: Build a small team of the very highest figures in the corporation to lead strategic change. POWER UP FEELING: Don't overthink it; trust your instincts as much as your intellect. ENERGIZE PEOPLE: Create a culture of communication, ownership, and followthrough of strategic objectives. BUILD ENDURANCE: Drive individual and organizational resilience to play the long game and hardwire change throughout systems and organizational structures to maintain momentum. In the final chapter, the authors illustrate their process in action through a detailed case study of BPB PLC--a century-old building material company that applied these five steps to make extraordinary strategic change happen. You can lead positive change in your company. A strategy is just words on paper until it's executed with care and smarts. Use The Strategy of Execution as a blueprint for long-term business success. There are a lot of smart people coming up with innovative business strategies today. Very few of them, however, are executing them. The gap between strategy and execution has never been wider. The Strategy of Execution provides a practical approach to the work that must be done after a business strategy is agreed upon.'This is a highly readable guide to one of the most under-researched areas of strategy; execution. Strategists have always had more solutions than there are problems, but the issue of what to do when they leave the building has not been satisfactorily addressed. Liz Mellon and Simon Carter have put together a clear framework for execution illustrated with countless examples. Industry leaders are called ‘executives'for a reason. This crisp and accessible book should be their mandatory reading.'-- PAUL WILLMAN, Professor of Management, London School of Economics'This is a clearly written and very readable book, with key insights into the challenges of implementing a strategy and good examples from individuals and organizations that have brought about successful change.'-- ANDREW HOBDAY, Chief Sustainability Officer, Mars Incorporated'One aspect of leadership that has always puzzled me is how a leader directs change for the good of the organization and the people. Too often, when a leader talks about change, employees expect the worst. This insightful book lays out a step-by-step guide on how to execute a strategy with warmth and conviction, bringing people with you rather than dragging them, fearful, behind you.'-- KEVIN KELLY, former CEO, Heidrick & Struggles

- Abstract
1.0 Introduction In the popular film'Wall Street', the ruthless investment banker played by Michael Douglas, devotes an ode to'Greed', as part of his speech to the shareholders'meeting of a paper company he aims at acquiring:'The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for the like of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works! Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of evolutionary spirit...'Even though the aforementioned acquisition deal did eventually fail, in today's economy M&A activity is surging to levels previously unknown. With the exception 1 of the first quarters of 2002, the last decade has been characterised by unprecedented 2 number of transactions • It appears that'greed'is gaining ground amongst top executives and shareholders. Inasmuch as greed is an integral part of human nature, so is the propensity to grow and develop a part of organisational nature. Greiner (1998:p.66) claims that organisational evolution is not merely a self-implied process, but a'contest for survival'. In other words, if organisations are to reach and potentially surpass their average life 3 expectancy range of 20 to 50 years, they need to evolve. Mergers & acquisitions seem to play a primary role in the evolution, and thus survival, of organisations.

- Abstract
Who is Roy Spence and what makes him the Pied Piper of Purpose? Over the last thirty-five years, Roy Spence has helped organizations such as Southwest Airlines, BMW, the University of Texas, Walmart, the Clinton Global Initiative, and many others achieve greatness by getting them to obsess about one big idea: purpose. With purpose as the North Star, employee engagement is higher, competition is less threatening, customers are more loyal, and innovation flows. It's the secret to developing a more fulfilling work life as well as a healthier bottom line. Simply put, purpose is a definitive statement about the difference you are trying to make in the world. As Spence writes,'It's your reason for being that goes beyond making money, and it almost always results in making more money than you ever thought possible.'It's not soft stuff, as some might scoff. Especially during times of great economic uncertainty, purpose is the key to creating and maintaining a high-performing organization. It deserves just as much attention as strategy, execution, and innovation. A real purpose can't just be words on a piece of paper. It has to get under the skin of every member of your organization like Southwest's purpose of democratizing the skies or Walmart's of saving people money so they can live better. If you get it right, your people will feel great about what they're doing, clear about their goals, and excited to get to work every morning. No organization is too big or too small, too niche or too mundane, to benefit from a clearly defined purpose. Spence and coauthor Haley Rushing share their insider insights and case studies to help you discover your organization's purpose, proclaim it to the world, and apply it to everything you do. This book will force you to address some tough and profound questions: •What difference do we want to make in the world? •What do we really stand for? •Do we have purpose-based leaders in key roles? •Do our employees feel like what they do matters? •Would our customers miss us if we ceased to exist? •Do we bring our purpose to life everywhere we can both internally and externally? Spence's hard-won lessons will change the way you view your job, your business model, your leadership style, and your marketing. They will help you make money, make a difference, and with a little luck, make history.

- Abstract
Research in strategy has shifted significantly towards strategy as something organizations have, rather than strategy as something that managers do. The activities of the people who actually manage and develop organizational strategy have become marginalized. Strategy as Practice argues the reverse: that research on strategy needs to take seriously what strategists do and the effects of what they do. Written by a distinguished team of researchers and educators, this book sets out a research agenda, provides guidelines on theoretical perspectives and alternative methodologies for research on practice as well as commentaries on published illustrative papers that exemplify the practice perspective. Strategy as Practice will be essential reading for doctoral students, researchers and academics who wish to understand or undertake research in this important field of management research.

- Abstract
Managers are facing unprecedented complexity, volatility, and ambiguity, quickly adapting their decision-making, leadership, vision, and strategies. Megatrends and forces of change have profound implications for business models, processes, and organizational structures, calling into question current paradigms and designing future change. Additionally, unprecedented disruptions, unforecastable in their nature, have increased the need for resilience and strategic flexibility. The book aims at tackling the potential interrelations among environmental transformations, strategic decisions, and leadership to better understand the role of external and internal factors on the effectiveness of managers. The book defines “change”: its extent, nature, and characteristics. Then, it focuses on decision-making, the role of potential cognitive biases, and how the interaction with the perception of determined environmental events affects the way in which decision-makers decide to implement specific strategies. Finally, in the light of waves of strategic change, it reviews theories on leadership and transformation by looking at the role and traits of leaders.Since environmental transformations have the potential to “disrupt” not only strategies but also decision-making processes and leadership, the book provides a review on the issue and propose an integrative framework which can be useful for both scholars and managers, especially in the fields of decision-making and strategy.

- Subjects

- Abstract
This book lays the groundwork for a relational theory of the firm as a network of stakeholder resources and interests. Drawing on the author's earlier publications on relational economics as the political economy of a global cooperative economy or stakeholder capitalism, it explores the governance and managerial implications of a relational economy for firms, while also critically revisiting the traditional and resource-based view of the firm. In turn, it explains concepts such as relational governance, relational costs, relational spaces, rent from cooperation, and shared value creation, as well as a dynamic and process-oriented relational business model. The book discusses the epistemological and methodological prerequisites of a relational theory of the firm and addresses their theoretical taxonomy. A relational theory of the firm is a work in progress; the book represents an invitation to join this theoretical and empirical undertaking.

It is a unique book and an essential guide for every executive, CEO and manager who wants to successfully lead their company in the 21st century. Every university professor of economics, management, strategy or decision making must read it, apply it and teach it to their students: only this way will we save companies from being directed by those who only know about conflicts and competition. In the words of the Secretary General of the OAS (2023), facing the present and the future “we can cooperate, or die.”This book represents a valuable resource for students, academics (teachers and researchers) and professionals in the field of strategy, decision making and management in general. For the author, cooperative strategy is natural to the human species and, without colliding with the principles of the free market, it may contribute positively on saving the planet.

This textbook examines the developments and changes that organizations should make in order to be successful in today's complex organizational environment. The authors explain various models and concepts of organizational design, highlight the important role played by agile management and self-organization and reflect on the consequences these concepts have for practical organizational work. The necessary organizational development can only be meaningfully and successfully implemented with consideration of the existing corporate culture and knowledge of the fundamentals of knowledge management, so these are also taught in the textbook. The overarching goal of organizational design is to promote the organization's resilience to crises. After laying the foundations for this, the penultimate chapter is dedicated to the aspect of resilience, followed by an outlook for the future. The didactic structure of the textbook includes learning objectives, practical examples and case studies as well as learning comprehension questions and the opportunity to test your own knowledge with the Springer Nature Flashcards. This textbook has been recommended and developed for university courses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

- Abstract
Strategic agility is a fast-growing paradigm for strategic thinking and strategy-making that is finding increasing acceptance both in academia and practice. But what are the theoretical origins of this paradigm? What are the main lines of development of the paradigm in the current academic debate and in firms adopting agile strategies? And, finally, what are the areas and topics that need additional research? With this book, Guido Bortoluzzi and Marco Balzano take us first into the past to look for the historical roots of this disruptive paradigm, then review the current academic debate on the topic and present some cases of agile companies. And finally, they discuss the potential future development of this topic in the field of strategy research.

- Abstract
The case studies in this Volume 2 book support the premise that organizational policies are what ensure institutionalization and sustainability of futures thinking in corporations, non-profits, and educational institutions. Futures thinking here reflects a systems approach utilized by organizational leaders to observe and interpret signals of change or disruption, identify trigger points of impact, employ foresight methodologies to build scenarios of the future and plan action, and then ultimately translate/actualize the most viable scenarios into successful business outcomes. What is new in the field of futures thinking today is not the general source of change (i.e., technology, globalization, and workforce well-being), but the tumultuous level of disruption occurring due to three phenomena—explosive use of social media, shift in great wealth, and government instability. Scholars and practitioners alike will find the case studies in this book provide nuanced insights into such disruptions, as well as discussion of best practices to ensure successful business solutions.

This book investigates the intersection of Christian faith and entrepreneurship in the global marketplace through empirical micro-level research on various Christian-based firms in North and Central America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. It features diverse cross-cultural cases, ranging from small family businesses to large enterprises, and covers multiple industries and regions. - Abstract
This book offers students a philosophical introduction to the ethical foundations of business management. It combines lessons from Kant with virtue ethics and also touches upon additional approaches such as utilitarianism. At the core of the book lies the concept of the “nexus of imperfect managerial duty.” This consists of the creation and reinforcement of virtuous managerial teams, engagement of discourse among all stakeholders, and pursuit of business responsibilities including the creative efforts necessary for modern organizations. A variety of special problems in managerial ethics are also explored, such as the ethics of managerial paternalism, fairness in stakeholder negotiations, devolution of business into scandalous corruption, and the role of boycotts in society's shaping of managerial duties. Case illustrations of these applications are presented throughout the book including in chapter appendices. A series of brief-answer questions, essay questions, and discussion questions are presented at the end of each chapter. Links to relevant video presentations of lectures applicable for each chapter are also provided.

- Abstract
Organizations are commonly thrust into hostile operating environments where they are required to make strategic decisions that involve significant and costly tradeoffs. Such hostile environments may be endemic such as an economic recession or idiosyncratic such as a predatory action by an adversary. Many features of such hostile environments parallel those of living organisms that also demonstrate fine-tuned strategies to improve their survivability under adverse conditions. How can organizations use these “bioinspired strategies” to survive, and even potentially innovate? This book shows that the same three capabilities essential for the survival of living organisms in harsh environments – efficiency, resilience, and prominence – are also critical for organizations in their process of navigating through their own hostile environments. Throughout the book, the authors provide organizational executives with a systematic framework for thinking about strategic decision-making in a hostile environment leaning on analysis of real-world cases to draw out ontologies and methods for guiding their teams through disruptions, change management, innovation, and process improvements. In the first part, organizations are provided with a systematic approach to analyzing three survivability influences – forces, resources, and observers and their interrelationships. While all three influences are active across all organisms (and organizations), the exact nature of their interrelationship and the significance of each influence are unique to every organism (or organization). The framework helps organizations nail down the specific features of their operating environment that can help or hinder survivability by analyzing the three influences. Organizations can respond to external influences by developing three-pronged capabilities – efficiency, resilience, and prominence (ERP) – that respond to the three survivability influences. Organizations often struggle with identifying the appropriate strategies to apply under different conditions. Fortunately, nature provides several mechanisms that can be analogically applied to guide business strategies. The book contains many illustrations and examples of strategic principles observed among living organisms that can help an organization develop ERP capability. Finally, the book introduces seven strategic design heuristics – Combination, Elimination, Separation, Segmentation, Replication, Dynamics, and Maximization – observed in a living system that can be flexibly utilized to generate ideas to achieve strategic ends.
