- Abstract
The Fourth Industrial Revolution means the widespread digitization of economic processes using more economical and efficient production technologies. Orientation towards productivity, flexibility and low production costs results in a slow process of dehumanization of industry and focus only on implementing digital technologies of Industry 4.0. A natural consequence of this trend is the concern of workers, governments and societies about new challenges and the role of humans in industry and the economy. The hope is the emergence of a new industry concept proposed by the European Commission that expands the features of the existing Industry 4.0 concept to include human-centric, environmental and resilience aspects in smart organizations. Industry 5.0 is an excellent alternative to the development of today's digital and dehumanized world, and this book presents challenges and priority directions for smart organizations in an environment shaped by the pillars of Industry 5.0. This research volume discusses the development of technologies that support human-oriented work systems, sustainable production and system resilience in intelligent organizations. It presents an educational challenge for universities and vocational schools in preparing employees for intelligent organizations and will be of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers, and students in the fields of organizational studies, knowledge management and the digital economy.

- Abstract
Culture by Design is about shifting focus from solely organisational outcomes and performance, towards organisational culture and wellbeing. It bridges the gap between two key organisational goals: (a) the drive for improving performance, outcomes and staff retention, and (b) strategies to encourage employee wellbeing, motivation and engagement within the workplace. For too long, organisations have focussed on each of these goals individually, with improvements in one area often coming at the expense of the other. This book demonstrates that this does not need to be the case, that what is required is a shift in perspective towards a culture-focussed approach where improved outcomes, performance and engagement are the added bonuses of a happy, connected staff team. You may be familiar with the phrase'Happy bees work harder'; this book demonstrates the fundamental truth in that statement and illustrates that'What is good for the bees is good for the hive'.Through practical strategies and real-world examples, this book reveals that the application of evidence-led, self-directed and cost-effective strategies can support any organisation to cultivate the culture they need to encourage the outcomes they want. This book offers a synthesis of theory and practice from organisational and social psychology, neuroscience and systems dynamics, alongside examples of practical tools you can start using today, to offer a roadmap to cultivating a workplace culture that supports the wellbeing and performance of the organisation as a whole.Whether you are an HR director, People Manager, C-Suite Team member or Wellbeing and Culture Lead, this book is relevant to Leaders in organisations of any size. If you are interested in what works when it comes to improving staff wellbeing, how to go about the process of culture change or who makes the tea and why it matters, then this book is for you.

- Abstract
This book lays out the evolution of the often contested construction management discipline. How is the field defined? What has been discovered to date? Who are the researchers involved? Where is the research being conducted? What national priorities exist among the many nations now grappling with how to absorb foreign construction expertise, or compete in the global commons? Despite the overwhelming economic and political importance of the global construction industry and its impact on the world, until now, there has been no book dedicated to describing the body of research in the field, or where the knowledge frontier lies. This book is the first of its kind, offering a comprehensive appraisal of the state of play in the emerging field of international construction management (ICM) research. It will serve as a reference guide for academics and researchers embarking on or already active in global construction management research. It lays out who the researchers are, along with their fields of expertise, the institutions dedicated to ICM research, global research trends, the journals accepting ICM research, and a country-by-country analysis of national research priorities. It will assist the fledgling PhD and the budding researcher, as well as the discipline expert, in making better decisions on how to advance the field of international construction management through research that both augments CM education and directly benefits the industry.

- Abstract
Although transformations in retailing are of tremendous current interest, there is no single broad-ranging account of the evolution of retailing formats. A Business History of Retail fills this gap, providing a chronological presentation of changes in retail businesses and shopping experiences from pre-industrial times to the present. Retailing is explored as both an economic and a cultural phenomenon, tracing retail strategies and business operations as they are reconfigured by retailers adapting to changing conditions, new technologies, government policies, and evolving markets.Relationships between the makers, sellers, and buyers of goods are shaped and reshaped as retailers, large and small, respond to competition and pursue new opportunities. Areas of continuity are identified even as businesses grow and strategies evolve. After four centuries there are more retailers selling more merchandise in more ways to more customers. The mass consumption of goods and services is central to American and Canadian history and understanding consumer society requires understanding retailing. Combining original research with recent scholarship in business and social history, cultural theory, and readings in current retail business strategy, this study provides a valuable resource for students and scholars in a wide range of fields and will appeal to general readers with an interest in retail, shopping, and consumerism.

- Abstract
Subversion, Power and Hierarchy in Organisations and Society: Carnivalesque Leadership explores a leadership strategy that dates back centuries but has become so normalised that it can be invisible as a strategy. Extrapolating Mikhail Bakhtin's ideas on carnival and its potential for communal freedom and subversive challenge to existing hierarchies, this book identifies components of the carnivalesque, considers why and how they have impact and then maps the application of Carnivalesque Leadership to a series of case studies. Exploratory in nature, these diverse case studies focus on the historic evolution of carnivals in Trinidad and Notting Hill, the safety-valve mechanisms ubiquitous in the education sector, the standardisation of control and release within the corporate sector and the dynamic tension between protest, challenge and fun in Pride events. Readers will benefit from an increased awareness of a strategised Carnivalesque Leadership model and a greater understanding of the potential not only for the safety-valve release of pressure in society and in organisations but also for longer-term change through exposure to alternatives to the official norm.

- Abstract
Social media use is a confounding aspect of organisations, aiding interconnection, communication, and productivity. Its use has undoubtedly impacted on human resource management and the establishment of harmonious contemporary employment relationships. Its use challenges the traditional boundaries which existed between work and privacy and, in doing so, seemingly increases organisational power and management control. This book discusses the impact social media has on work; how it is used to stage the organisation, self-identity, power, and control using four conceptual themes: adoption, shaping, and staging of social media in organisations; digitised regimes of power, control, and surveillance; evolving identity, employee voice, and dramaturgical performance online; and employee forms of resistance, sousveillance, and social media misbehaviours. These themes are brought to life through the lived experiences and narratives of workers who hold roles in human resources, management, and frontline operations. This approach highlights a unique multi-perspective on social media use by giving voice to these workers. The book uses these individual narratives to reposition the ways employees utilise social media for sousveillance, dissent, and resistance purposes. In doing so, the book encourages wider debate, critical reflection, and self-reflexivity on rarely discussed management approaches or (mis)behaviours associated with social media use and their profound implications for power dynamics in organisations.

- Abstract
The new paradigm in employee development assumes that employees should proactively direct their learning and growth. Most workplace learning is basically informal and occurs through daily-work routines, peer-to-peer interactions, and networking, and typically brings about signifi cant positive outcomes to both individuals and organizations. Yet, workplace learning always occurs in a predefi ned context and this context has recently changed. Hereafter, many people have been delegated to work from home or any other remote location. Many employees would like to maintain remote or hybrid work design in the future, as well. In this research monograph, the authors explore an unexplored topic in social science research concerning proactive employee development through informal learning in new ways of working (NWW).The monograph will be of interest to students and researchers in organizational studies, organizational behavior, organizational psychology, and organizational learning, as well as human resource professionals concerned with employee development and the changing nature of work.

- Abstract
This book aims at exploring the reception of critical posthumanist conversations in the context of Management and Organization Studies. It constitutes an invitation to de-center the human subject and thus an invitation to the ongoing deconstruction of humanism. The project is not to deny humans but to position them in relation to other nonhumans, more-than-humans, the non-living world, and all the “missing masses” from organizational inquiry. What is under critique is humanism's anthropocentrism, essentialism, exceptionalism, and speciesism in the context of the Anthropocene and the contemporary crisis the world experiences. From climate change to the loss of sense at work, to the new geopolitical crisis, to the unknown effects of the diffusion of AI, all these powerful forces have implications for organizations and organizing. A re-imagination of concepts, theories, and methods is needed in organization studies to cope with the challenge of a more-than-human world.

- Abstract
This book exposes two inspiring research categories: digitization and trust. Digitization is a phenomenon that dynamically modifies the modern world in almost every area. Modern technologies, artificial intelligence and humanoid robots are instruments with an increasingly significant impact on the shape of the management process of modern organizations, including the way people are managed. Trust is a subtle concept, with a very different interpretation, influencing the behaviour of employees in a multifaceted way. A superficial look at the combination of both categories seems to see them as irrational. Upon closer examination, however, it exposes many interesting fields of scientific exploration. Trust, as a research category, has been included in three significant dimensions: in relation to co-workers, superiors and information technology, dominated by digitization. Each draws attention to different problems of priority importance for the organization. Asserting the idea that trust in the conditions of digitization becomes a category of timeless importance in the interdisciplinary dimension, this volume will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners and advanced students in the fields of management of technology and innovation, organizational studies and leadership. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

- Leadership, Charisma (Personality trait)
- Abstract
History is full of examples of how the skilful use of language is a fundamental aspect of charismatic leadership. Traditionally, this phenomenon has been studied focusing on oratory skills. The book argues that the relationship between a leader and a follower has points of similarity to that which exists between a writer and a reader, and that in each case, former party is the agenda setter, but satisfactory outcomes require a mutual endeavor. Given that scholarly writing about management and organizations is inevitably a mix of the presentation of empirical truths and value judgements, the ability to engage the reader intellectually and emotionally is critical in the successful dissemination of disciplinary knowledge and belief claims. The book proposes a multi-faceted construct of textual charisma which is created through the use of metaphors, stories and personal accounts as well as the ancient construct of pistis and the contemporary notion of metadiscourse. The proposed framework provides guidance for management and organization studies'authors seeking to present themselves as convincing and engaging writers.Chapter 1 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

- Abstract
Many attempts have been made in recent decades by liberal market economies to reconstruct public workplace conflict resolution agencies in response to major changes in patterns of workplace conflict. These have often been hampered or stymied by political schisms, stalemate or inertia. The radical reconstruction of conflict resolution in Ireland marks out a major exception to the international pattern and represents a case of successful adaptation and innovation in conflict resolution services and supports. Drawing on detailed primary research, and aimed at scholars, policy makers, professionals and students, this book examines the drivers of innovation in the Irish case and shows how the new state agency for workplace conflict resolution, the Workplace Relations Commission, operates and maintains the confidence of employers, unions, people at work and government. The Irish case is considered in comparative context, and current strategic challenges facing the Workplace Relations Commission are assessed.

- Abstract
This book outlines a cutting-edge form of program delivery which the authors term SIP-Form or Strategic Integrated Program delivery. Using the Melbourne Level Crossing Removal Program (LXRP), consisting of the removal of 85 dangerous level crossings throughout metropolitan Melbourne, including rail station upgrades, signalling and track work, and other associated capital works, as an exemplar, the book sets out four features that the authors argue define the SIP-form concept as follows: The organisation delivers a program of projects, many using an IPD contract variant form such as a Project Alliance Agreement (PAA) in Australia and numerous other countries, or the Integrated Form of Agreement (IFoA) in North America The contract form adopted is used and has been strategically designed to accommodate the project's risk and uncertainty profile, as is the case with the LXRP Projects within the program are integrated with some being concurrently delivered with coordination across the projects in a coherent and highly purposeful manner. Projects are not included that do not strategically fit the overall program delivery strategy There is a strategy for learning and innovation diffusion across projects, concurrently and sequentially. Lessons to be learned are learned through designed-in governance mechanisms The LXRP is a potentially unique program of projects, and the book takes the reader on a journey through this complex program and after giving the background and relevant context covers topics such as strategy, governance, procurement, collaboration, program alliance, HRM, leadership, digital innovation, continuous improvement, community engagement, and performance measurement. This detailed analysis of such a complex program of projects makes this book essential reading for project managers, engineers, and advanced students of project delivery and management.

- Abstract
First published in 1993, The Corporate Paradox is the first major, in-depth study of the franchise relationship and how it functions. While past debates have focused on the question: ‘What do bosses do?', we are now being asked: ‘Who really is the boss?'. Since the late 1970s the emergence of franchising arrangements has been a major part of the wider process of change taking place in the nature of modern business organization. The names of franchise companies are familiar to most people: Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Pepsi cola, Body Shop, to name but a few. But how many people realize that each such outlet is a separate legal entity owned by a local franchisee? Franchising remains, at best, little understood. In this book, Alan Felstead explores who controls what, why and how, setting his discussion within the context of the many current changes affecting traditional contractual bonds between employers and employees, producers and buyers, owners and managers. This is a must read for students of management, organizational studies, marketing, industrial sociology and commercial law.

- Abstract
In the realm of safety management, this book embarks on a profound exploration of how the political economy was reshaped in the last two decades. Much like privatization, deregulation, and financialization altered the economic landscape, this narrative unveils how safety management has been affected by the intertwined dynamics of asset underinvestment, privatization, self-regulation, workplace flexibilization, and market-driven policies. This book, the second installment of a thought-provoking trilogy on the consequences of neoliberalism, mirrors the political economy's promotion of the private sector's role in the economy. Just as neoliberalism amplified and accelerated the mechanisms of human-made disasters in complex systems, this narrative lays bare the heightened potential for safety misfortunes when governed by market-driven principles. As the story unfolds, the book delves into the concept of'synoptic legibility'in safety management, akin to how the political economy distilled its essence into privatization and deregulation. The authors scrutinize the consequences of translating safety measures into rigid targets, unveiling how this shift can distort the integrity of safety metrics and inadvertently harm individuals. Drawing parallels with historical blunders such as England's window tax, the book contemplates the precarious nature of equating simplified metrics with safety achievements. Much like the political economy's'acceptable risk'renegotiations, it examines how the pursuit of safety through metrics and surveillance can lead to'manufactured insecurity,'eroding trust, autonomy, and professionalism. In Random Noise, Poole and Dekker extend this reach once again, writing for all managers, board members, organization leaders, consultants, practitioners, researchers, lecturers, students, and investigators curious to understand the genuine nature of organizational and safety performance.

And can these types, or rather the attributes that combine to forge them, be learned or acquired? In this book, John Thompson answers these questions – and many more – to let the reader see through the eyes of the entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs: Talent, Temperament, Opportunity and Mindset introduces the world of entrepreneurship from a person-centred perspective. Part 1 builds an understanding of the entrepreneur as a person based on the key factors of talent and temperament – a unique framework for understanding and exploiting entrepreneurial opportunities. Part 1 also explores the entrepreneurial mindset and how it can be honed and strengthened. The process of starting and growing a business is then described in detail in Part 2, which also examines entrepreneurship in the context of opportunity and strategy. Part 3 introduces the infrastructure and environment in which the entrepreneur has to operate and tells the stories of famous entrepreneurs through dozens of case vignettes, including classic figures such as Henry Ford, through to social entrepreneurs and even anti-social entrepreneurs such as Al Capone! This insightful, empirically-based take on the entrepreneur provides students with an accessible and original way into entrepreneurship. Whatever their background, students at all levels will value the author's accessible writing style and invaluable insights.

- Abstract
We are drowning in data but are starved for knowledge. Data Analytics is the discipline of extracting actionable insights by structuring, processing, analysing and visualising data using methods and software tools. Hence, we gain knowledge by understanding the data. A roadmap to achieve this is encapsulated in the knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) process. Databases help us store data in a structured way. The structure query language (SQL) allows us to gain first insights about business opportunities. Visualising the data using business intelligence tools and data science languages deepens our understanding of the key performance indicators and business characteristics. This can be used to create relevant classification and prediction models; for instance, to provide customers with the appropriate products or predict the eruption time of geysers. Machine learning algorithms help us in this endeavour. Moreover, we can create new classes using unsupervised learning methods, which can be used to define new market segments or group customers with similar characteristics. Finally, artificial intelligence allows us to reason under uncertainty and find optimal solutions for business challenges. All these topics are covered in this book with a hands-on process, which means we use numerous examples to introduce the concepts and several software tools to assist us. Several interactive exercises support us in deepening the understanding and keep us engaged with the material. This book is appropriate for master students but can be used for undergraduate students. Practitioners will also benefit from the readily available tools. The material was especially designed for Business Analytics degrees with a focus on Data Science and can also be used for machine learning or artificial intelligence classes. This entry-level book is ideally suited for a wide range of disciplines wishing to gain actionable data insights in a practical manner.

- Abstract
The concept of relational capital mainly refers to the value of the relationships a company creates with its stakeholders. These relationships inspired the authors to analyze their importance in the context of creating value for the enterprise and to explore the importance of leadership and communication in building relationships with the environment. Internal relational capital refers to the organization's set of intellectual property, work processes and methods, executive procedures, databases, communication and information infrastructure. Employee relations and leadership activities become pivotal in this context, as improving relational competence and intra-organizational relational capital can foster building lasting relationships with external stakeholders. This book comprises two parts. The first is devoted to discussing the most important concepts and issues related to the essence and importance of relational capital in modern companies, characterizing methods and tools for building relational capital, while pointing to the role of leadership in shaping employee engagement and building intra-organizational relationships. The second part contains the results of empirical research on the importance of relational capital in organizations from the point of view of managers, and the features and scope of maintained relationships with stakeholders. This research allowed for the evaluation of ongoing relationships in terms of how they improved innovation, financial performance, or access to resources. The book will be especially valuable to researchers, academics, professionals and advanced students in the fields of organizational studies, employment relations and leadership.

- Abstract
Originally published in 1980, this book provides an analysis and assessment of events in local government management during the late 20th Century set within an overall conceptual framework of organisation theory. The book fills the gap between theoretical prescription and practical management application. The analysis focuses on three areas of organisation design and functioning – the structural, the procedural and the cultural. In each of these areas the interrelationship between broad theoretical prescriptions and the actual management innovations introduced in local authorities is examined. A major portion of the book is devoted to an assessment of the importance of behavioural/cultural factors in the introduction and assimilation (or rejection) of managerial change, an aspect of organisational functioning which was neglected in the literature on local government management.

There is an increased international flavour, reflected in the range of contemporary case studies and literature used throughout, which explore business and management problems in the private and public sectors. The content also reflects the author's recent experience of consulting and managing at board level. This text will be relevant to practising and aspiring managers studying leadership, people management, organizational behaviour and development, and change management on courses at later stage undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and executive education levels.

- Abstract
What is Human Resource Strategy? How are human resource strategies formulated and how can we explain the variance between what is espoused and what is actually implemented? What impact – if any – does human resource strategy have on the organization's “bottom line,” and how can this impact be explained? Is there one best HR strategy for all firms, or is the impact of HR strategy on performance contingent on some set of organizational, technological or environmental factors?Human Resource Strategy, third edition, provides an overview of the academic and practitioner responses to these and other questions. Applying an integrative framework, the authors review over thirty years'worth of empirical and theoretical research in an attempt to reconcile often-conflicting conceptual models and equivocal empirical findings. The book supports students in applying theory to practice and presents much of the relevant research in the context of the critical strategic decisions that executives are often forced to make with regard to human resource investments and deployments. As a result, often-complex theoretical models and scientific findings are presented such that they are not only understandable but also highly relevant to non-research-oriented practitioners. This new edition includes new chapters on innovations in HR strategies and diversity and introduces more practical examples. This book is an ideal resource for students and practitioners alike.

- Abstract
Hofstede Matters offers an updated presentation of the evolving views of academics and teachers who have worked with Hofstede's research findings since the publication of the first edition of Culture's Consequences in 1980. The authors reflect on their changing beliefs about the concept of cultural dimensions that led to a radical change in the way cultures were dealt with in business schools across Europe and beyond. Hofstede's dimensions made'thinking'about culture more accessible overnight by creating a conceptual framework that teachers, students, managers, and consultants could grasp and easily apply in international comparisons. The book shows the man behind the value dimensions framework through the eyes of teachers and academics many of whom dealt with Hofstede personally. Contemporary contributors as well as younger academic fellow researchers evaluate the past paradigms and look behind the scenes to better understand the developments of the more recent ones. Jointly, they try to decide if Hofstede still helps us to overcome uncertainty when confronted with actions undertaken with different values in mind. Did he nudge us in the desirable direction? Offering a unique analysis of the strengths, criticisms, and legacy of Hofstede's work, this book will appeal to academics and students across disciplines including cross-cultural management, critical management studies, and international management.

45. Making Sense of Complexity in Projects : An Analysis of Discourses About Complexity in Project Management
- Author
-
Steve Raue and Steve Raue
- Abstract
This book explores ‘project management'(PM) from a new perspective. Project management is facing a paradigmatic stalemate. Its major challenge is complexity. Its current paradigmatic foundation in first-order cybernetics has reached its limits. More tools are created and project management is applied to any potential context, expecting better results while doing more of the same. Beyond conventional project management, agile and other project management approaches have emerged as new options to answer the complexity challenge. Yet, the question remains whether new options and more tools in light of the current shortcomings can create enough momentum for project management as a whole to overcome its paradigmatic stalemate and evolve toward new paradigms based on second-order cybernetics. This book will embark on a journey to explore current paradigms in project management and argue why an analysis of discourse practices in project management may be critical to generating new paradigmatic perspectives. The aim of this book is to provide an alternative perspective on projects as discourses and project management as a means to observe and conduct these discourses. Instead of defining what projects and project management are, the approach is to look at what people talk about when doing projects and apply project management. It will arrive at a picture of how discourses about project management are shaped and institutionalised through the sensemaking of individuals and selected communities in their specific project practice and how these discourses shape project management in turn. It is argued that this self-reinforcing circle leads to a certain solidification of project management paradigms which prove insufficient in dealing with project complexity. However, it will also be argued that project practitioners can utilise their self-reflection and self-description of these discourse conventions to obtain more meaningful project conversations and arrive at a unified and systemically integrated understanding of project management. This book will be of particular relevance to those interested in current issues underlying project management. More generally, it will be a valuable resource for researchers of project management, organisational studies and governance.

- Abstract
Hugh Clegg was a founding figure of post-war British Industrial Relations, the forerunner of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management, as taught in most Business Schools today. He defined ‘industrial democracy'as collective bargaining with trade unions, laid the foundations for the pluralist approach to Industrial Relations, was a key figure in the post-war social sciences and a major public policy player. More widely, he was an important figure in the Cold War social democratic academic left, who broke with his earlier Communism to champion free trade unions in a liberal democratic society. He also produced the major Oxford University Press trade union history. This book aims to understand the politics and industrial relations of the post-war period in Britain (in which trade unions were central) through the life of a key public intellectual. It will help readers understand the political and social science roots of contemporary Employment Relations and Human Resource Management through a deep historical study of Clegg's life and times, in the context of his post-war social democratic generation. It illustrates how the failures of post-war industrial relations led to Thatcherism. Current Employment Relations academics and public policy can learn much from this history, making it of value to researchers, students, and academics in the fields of Human Resource Management and business and management history.
