- Abstract
The 21st International EurOMA (EurOMA 2014) Conference was hosted by Università degli Studi di Palermo. The conference theme was Operations Management in an Innovation Economy. According to innovation economists what primarily drives economic growth in today's knowledge-based economy is not capital accumulation but innovative capacity spurred by appropriable knowledge and technological externalities. Economics growth in innovation economics is the end-product of knowledge, R&D expenditures, licenses, technological spillovers and externalities between collaborative firms, i.e. supply chains and networks of innovation. When firms do not explicitly acknowledge and manage their operations as a concurrent activity to the management of innovation, they often encounter problems late in product development, or with manufacturing launch, logistical support, quality control, and production costs. As such, innovation process and operations management should be coordinated, rather than being viewed as separate sets of decisions and activities. We received 592 abstracts and used a doubled-blind review process, involving 127 members of the Scientific Committee, to review 586 abstracts (6 abstracts were desk rejected) and provide feedback to the authors. Of these, 513 were accepted and 73 rejected. The accepted abstracts resulted in 405 full papers in the Scientific Programme. With 3 papers subsequently withdrawn, there were 402 paper presentations in prospect. The most recurrent OM themes were: Sustainability in Operations and Logistics (42 papers); Supply Chain Management (35 papers); Innovation, Product and Service Development (32 papers); Managing Inter-firm Relationships in Supply Chains (30 papers); Healthcare OM (21 papers); Lean and Agile Operations (21 papers).

- Abstract
This book examines the impact of digital innovation on organizations. It reveals how the digital revolution is redefining traditional levels of analysis while at the same time blurring the internal and external boundaries of the organizational environment. It presents a collection of research papers that examine the interaction between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and behavior from a threefold perspective: First, they analyze individual behavior in terms of specific organizational practices like learning, collaboration and knowledge transfer, as well as the use of ICT within the organization. Second, they explore the dynamics at work on the border between the internal and the external environments by analyzing the organizational impact of ICT usage outside the company, as can be seen in employer branding, consumer behavior and organizational image. Third, they investigate how ICT is being adopted to help face societal challenges outside the company like wasteand pollution, smart cities, and e-government. The diversity of views offered makes this book particularly relevant for users, companies, scientists and governments. The content is based on a selection of the best papers – original double-blind peer reviewed contributions –presented at the annual conference of the Italian chapter of AIS, which took place in Rome, Italy, in October 2015, or in other reputable international peer-refereed Information Systems conferences.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.3, University of Stuttgart (Institute for International and Strategic Management), language: English, abstract: This paper hopes to answer how increasing uncertainty is impacting International Management and how new and innovative companies like Tesla Inc conduct international expansion. Economic activities in the 21st century, are characterized by dynamic global competition, the increasing interdependence and internationalization of economic relations and the resulting merging of world markets. With the continuous expansion of world trade and investment, with factors of production being highly mobile, and with the sources of innovation becoming increasingly global, an increasingly larger share of the global economy is reasonably accurately characterized as “open” it est as being exposed to the forces of global competition, and to the international flows of capital, technology and skilled labor. Yet, the belief in globalization and free trade seems to be in disarray since the shocks of Brexit and Trump in 2016. In various regions of the world, a flare-up of nationalism, protectionism and trade barriers is creating a politically and economically volatile atmosphere. While 2019 and 2020 brought new obstacles - from customs tariffs to a global pandemic - this has led to a shift in framework conditions rather than an end to international competition. In addition, a lot of companies across various business sectors are entangled in extensive and expensive investment or restructuring programs brought upon by the ever-increasing pace of technological, sociological and legal developments. Still, there is uncertainty if these investments will one day pay off or turn out the be a charge in the wrong direction. Between 1970 and 2018, FDI grew from 14.2 billion to 1.43 trillion US dollars, an increase of over 900 percent. Based on this rapid development, participation in international competition has become a matter of course - if not a necessity - for many companies, and their attention is focused on efficient conduct and value-adding administering of international activities. This begs the question how internationally active companies with a global and decentralized value chain can fight rising uncertainty and react to constantly changing environments? How can these companies not only hold on to existing business but expand their dominance in the market against the backdrop of uncertainty? Are established strategy models such as Ghemawat's AAA model still applicable today, do they need to be revised or is there even a need for completely new approaches?

- Abstract
This book discusses the concepts of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) that are the core of various paradigms used in strategic management to understand competitive advantage as well as flexibility in organizational boundaries. It serves as a valuable reference resource in the area of VUCA markets. An increase in the levels and types of uncertainty has important implications potentially for the durability of a company's advantages, the way firms learn and adapt, approaches for managing innovation and knowledge, and the attractiveness of different strategies and organizational models. In today's world, strategic flexibility in VUCA is essential for business leaders to sustain market advantage and attain a clear vision amid the chaos. Business leaders who stay focused and are aware of external volatility as the prevalent characteristic are successful, while those who are not flexible in this VUCA world and lock themselves into fixed positions lose out.The book includes empirical and conceptual research papers along with case studies and models discussing strategies for emerging markets in volatile and uncertain environments. It also covers a variety of issues, including innovation, people and processes, financial management, and leadership and strategies in VUCA markets. Apart from research fraternity and academia, the contents of the book will be useful for practitioners as well as industry watchers.

- Abstract
This proceedings volume presents the latest research from the worldwide mass customization, personalization and co-creation (MCPC) community bringing together new thoughts and results from various disciplines within the field. The chapters are based on papers from The MCPC 2015 Conference where the emphasis was placed on “managing complexity.” MCPC is now beginning to emerge in many industries as a profitable business model. But customization and personalization go far beyond the sheer individualization of products and become an extension of current business models and production styles. This book covers topics such as complexity management of knowledge-based systems in manufacturing design and production, sustainable mass customization, choice navigation, and product modeling. The chapters are contributed by a wide range of specialists, offering cutting-edge research, as well as insightful advances in industrial practice in key areas. The MCPC 2015 Conference had a strong focus on real life MCPC applications, and this proceedings volume reflects this. MCPC strategies aim to profit from the fact that people are different. Their objective is to turn customer heterogeneities into profit opportunities, hence addressing the current trend of long tail business models. Mass customization means to provide goods and services that best serve individual customers'personal needs with near mass production efficiency. This book brings together the latest from MCPC thought leaders, entrepreneurs, technology developers, and researchers that use these strategies in practice.

- Abstract
The concept of relational capital mainly refers to the value of the relationships a company creates with its stakeholders. These relationships inspired the authors to analyze their importance in the context of creating value for the enterprise and to explore the importance of leadership and communication in building relationships with the environment. Internal relational capital refers to the organization's set of intellectual property, work processes and methods, executive procedures, databases, communication and information infrastructure. Employee relations and leadership activities become pivotal in this context, as improving relational competence and intra-organizational relational capital can foster building lasting relationships with external stakeholders. This book comprises two parts. The first is devoted to discussing the most important concepts and issues related to the essence and importance of relational capital in modern companies, characterizing methods and tools for building relational capital, while pointing to the role of leadership in shaping employee engagement and building intra-organizational relationships. The second part contains the results of empirical research on the importance of relational capital in organizations from the point of view of managers, and the features and scope of maintained relationships with stakeholders. This research allowed for the evaluation of ongoing relationships in terms of how they improved innovation, financial performance, or access to resources. The book will be especially valuable to researchers, academics, professionals and advanced students in the fields of organizational studies, employment relations and leadership.

The definitive books on one of the most influential business ideas of our time, disruptive innovation. His work is cited by the world's best-known thought leaders, from Steve Jobs to Malcolm Gladwell. In these classic bestsellers, innovation expert Clayton Christensen shows how even the most outstanding companies can do everything right—yet still lost market leadership. In The Innovator's Dilemma, Christensen presents his theory of disruptive innovation and explains that, no matter the industry, a successful company with established products will get pushed aside unless managers know how and when to abandon traditional business practices. In The Innovator's Solution, Christensen and his coauthor, Michael Raynor, expand on the idea of disruption, showing how companies can and should become disruptors themselves. Sharp, cogent, and provocative, these are the two books that no manager, leader, or entrepreneur should be without.

- Abstract
The coronavirus crisis and related business failures are widely discussed topics, with COVID-19 raising many concerns about existing risk management models. Many companies have struggled to understand which factors to consider in their business model to address the new risks associated with the pandemic. The resulting financial crisis has highlighted the importance of further research on risk management that will allow businesses to develop feasible models for handling various risks in the ongoing crisis and recovery period.Existing academic studies emphasise the necessity of revised risk management models, but focus on the risk posed by Artificial Intelligence and other advanced technologies. The detailed study thus fulfils the vital need to understand how the risk management strategies of businesses should be revised, to adapt to changes brought about by the pandemic. This book is essential reading for students studying risk management, researchers examining the relation between advanced technology and risk management mitigation strategies, businesses working on their strategies around managing risk, and policymakers looking for necessary policy changes for an effective support to businesses.

- Abstract
This book is the first comprehensive presentation of a Kaiyu Markov model with covariates and a multivariate Poisson model with competitive destinations. These two models are core techniques when the authors and colleagues conduct their Kaiyu studies. The two models are usually used to forecast the effects of specific urban redevelopment on both the number of visitors and consumer shop-around or Kaiyu movements. Their Kaiyu studies originated from the constructions of a Kaiyu Markov model and the disaggregated hierarchical decision Huff model almost simultaneously around the early 1980s. This book retrospectively reviews how these models have evolved from the start to the present state, and previews the ongoing efforts to make further extensions of these models. The extension of the Huff model started from the disaggregated hierarchical decision Huff model with shop-arounds. In retrospect, the model formulated the consumer's simultaneous choice of destinations as a joint probability. The mechanism to determine this joint probability was a recursive conditional probability system. Now the Huff model has shifted from joint probability to multivariate frequency Poisson with competitive destinations. On the other hand, the Kaiyu Markov model started from a descriptive model. Because it cannot forecast changes in shop-arounds or consumer Kaiyu behaviors, the Kaiyu Markov model with covariates was developed in which entrance and shop-around choice probabilities are explained by the respective two logit models with covariates such as distances and shop-floor areas. The noticeable point is that it can explain consumers'probability of quitting their shop-arounds. Thus, the model enables one to evaluate the effects of urban revitalization policy that promotes consumers'shop-arounds or Kaiyu behaviors. Furthermore, if the Kaiyu Markov model can estimate the actual numbers of flows of consumers'shop-arounds among shopping sites, the corresponding money flows also can be estimated as economic effects. This book discusses from scratch the evolution of all these topics. Thus this book provides the basics of the Kaiyu Markov model, a tutorial for the theory and estimation of the conditional logit model, and a chapter serving as a practical research manual for forecasting changes caused by urban development based on consumers'Kaiyu behaviors.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Zambia, language: English, abstract: This study explores and examines the influence of Entrepreneurial Alertness (EA) on Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) performance within the Central Business District (CBD) of Lusaka. The study participants included 152 entrepreneurs who own SMEs represented by 44.7% females and 55.3% males. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence that the EA construct has on SME performance, the association between the first order latent constructs, and to determine which roles of EA in venture performance were appropriate to the participants. A cross-sectional survey was created using Qualtrics online survey software and sent through email and what's app to SME's whose contact details were provided by the Zambia Development Agency. The construct of EA was examined using a 13-point scale. Descriptive statistics were conducted in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed in Amos SPSS to verify the factor structure of the observed variables and to ascertain the validity, and reliability of the measuring instrument. The influence of EA on SME performance and association between the first-order latent variables with performance were tested using multivariate Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The study found that the construct of EA has a positive and significant influence on SME performance. As regards the association between the first-order latent constructs (i.e., dimensions) and performance, this study demonstrated that only the evaluation and judgment latent construct (dimension) had a significant and positive association. Finally, the study determined that EA appears to be important when a company considers entering a foreign market as a strategy for market development, and EA has a direct impact on strategic change decisions and organizational performance. The study has implications for education, commerce, and industrial policymakers. Policy initiatives could influence training curriculum and capacity-building programs that promote EA to increase entrepreneurial opportunity identifications for increased national performance and contribution.

- Abstract
If you're thinking of cutting your midlevel managers in the new world of work, think again.'Middle manager.'The term evokes a bygone industrial era in which managers functioned like cogs in a vast bureaucratic machine. In recent decades, midlevel managers became a favorite target for the chopping block—underappreciated, often considered a superfluous layer of the organization. Not only does this outdated perspective need to change, but the future demands it. In Power to the Middle, McKinsey thought leaders Bill Schaninger, Bryan Hancock, and Emily Field call for a profound reimagining of managers and their roles. They explain how middle managers are uniquely positioned close to the ground but with a crucial connection to company strategy, enabling them to guide their organizations through periods of rapid and complex change, as well as to help shape the new world of work. The authors compellingly illustrate this deep shift in the workplace, showing how:Managers are the key to winning the war for talent, which requires strong people skills to attract and retain the best talent.Managers must shift from merely enforcing rules to challenging them, serving as critical stopgaps for rules that are ineffective or obsolete.Crucially, good managers must not be promoted out of their jobs. Instead, their title and compensation should reflect their high value and allow them to advance within their roles. With rich stories and cutting-edge research, Power to the Middle offers a new model for companies to radically alter the way they hire, train, and reward their midlevel managers—their most valuable asset.

- Abstract
Why do some departments, divisions, and organizations soar while others struggle? Watching another team achieve the success you feel yours more rightfully deserves can be incredibly frustrating. However, they might have something you don't: Seconds-in-Command.Given how many Seconds-in-Command exist in the workforce, it is stunning that there are so few books about them. Organizations can and often do have more than one 2iC; large ones may have hundreds. KP Powers focuses on essential skills that individuals in these positions already possess and can enhance to become an organization's key to achieving phenomenal success. This book introduces the groundbreaking concept of linking multiple 2iCs to form a Second-in-Command chain. This game-changing technique increases the positive impact that 2iCs can have on organizational and leader success. In today's world, leaders no longer have the luxury of hiring more people to keep up with a growing workload. The labor shortage and the need to cut costs because of looming economic issues make that impractical. It makes more sense to consider a new organizational framework that includes 2iCs, thus multiplying existing team members'contributions. This is especially critical in highly regulated fields such as higher education, finance, and health care, where the stakes and penalties are high and unforgiving.Second-in-Command, First in Excellence invites readers to think differently about this critical role. Geared toward leaders who have or want a 2iC as well as 2iCs themselves, this book both demonstrates the value of the 2iC position and serves as a tool for professional development.

- Abstract
This ambitious book develops an integrative understanding of business transparency spanning business disciplines. It synthesizes the vast, siloed research on business transparency to develop and provide an integrative view for business researchers and scholars, pointing out research opportunities in the process. The first chapter introduces business transparency with a brief historical overview, followed by its key conceptualizations and challenges. Chapters 2 through 5 take up four conceptually distinct views of transparency in depth: transparency as strategic disclosure (Chapter 2), transparency as a business tactic (Chapter 3), transparency as organizational culture (Chapter 4) and transparency as a managerial virtue (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 explores transparency's infeasibility challenge through the chasm between disclosure and understanding and considers its implications. The final chapter provides an integrative framework of business transparency. This book will be useful to business academics who are interested in transparency and associated concepts.
