How can management research promote a more applicable and a more transparent knowledge for the benefit of individuals and organizations? Looming large over this question is the challenge of repurposing management research for improving public good. Co-edited by R. H. Tiell and S. C. Malka, the title of the book says it all - Amplifying management research for the common good: Lessons for curious individuals and organizations - Insights from practitioners in the field. In this book, we sought to bridge the chasm that separates the non-academic audience from the typically less-accessible scientific journals. We attempted to make empirical evidence more inclusive, impactful and public good relevant for the non-academic stakeholders that live and work in the broader community. For that purpose, we made available to the reader and to our chapter contributors a collection of published papers, some authored by the editors of this book, and others co-authored with other researchers. The papers cover a diverse set of business topics all of which we believe hold much relevance for management today. Providing the reader with their insights on subject matter along with lessons and practical recommendations, we sought experts in the field that can build on empirical research in various areas of management and then synthesize and broaden it through their expertise and work experience. As a trigger, we aligned each contributor with one or two empirical papers based on their background, interests, and professional experience. Using the assigned papers as a springboard, we asked each author to identify emerging themes around which they can build their chapter. We wanted them to think of the book audience: non-academicians comprised of interested and curious individuals, managers, and their organizations. And, we wanted our authors to elaborate on practical lessons, suggestions, and recommendations that can make a difference in the lives of the book audience. Our effort resulted in a collection of chapters covering a wide range of topics from supply chain challenges in Central America, to life changing long-term effects of the pandemic, from delivery of services for mental health and suicide, to logistics capabilities pre-post Ivan in the Cayman Islands, from the new workplace, to labor market shortages, and from new workforce service pathways, and the optimization of talent, to the impact of recent recessions on the youth and the unemployed, and the assessment of C-suit level leaders. Advances in Business and Management. Volume 15 begins by presenting a paper examining the depth and range of psychological stressors and strains that entrepreneurs encounter in their new ventures, aiming to further clarify the confusion and inconsistencies of being self-employed. The following study was conducted in order to analyze the impacts of IT on e-business adoption and to understand the effects of quality IT strategies in e-business performance. Focusing on Chinese users through an online survey, the measurement instrument of this research model was developed from various studies. The authors go on to discuss brand management and the way in which it attempts to tap into collective meanings, associating life-world categories of thought and emotion. A seduction takes place whereby a captured emotional involvement with advertisements confuses the imaginary with perception and circumvents rational thought prior to purchase—all likely to evolve in directions anticipated by the market specialists. One paper shows that the manner an organisation approaches strategic planning is significant. A case study rooted in stewardship, service and divine endowments develops theoretical findings drawing from biblical strategy and blends these with contemporary strategic human resource management. Social impact assessment (SIA) has become a recent concept of interest within the business and public domains, soliciting further study by academics. SIA is an interdisciplinary social science that incorporates various fields and is regarded as a technique for predicting social impacts as part of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) or as a stand-alone process. This book contributes to the knowledge base of SIA and its relationship with b-corporations and integrated reporting, providing insights between these two fields of research. The penultimate current chapter embraces a topic which is still underdeveloped in the literature: how corporate social responsibility may or may not influence brand equity. Therefore, the authors conducted a literature review to analyse past studies on this topic, focusing on four major aspects. Today every customer is digital customer, and every enterprise is digital enterprise. Alan M. Rugman's and Cecilia Brain's paper examines the R&D and strate­ gies of the world's largest finns in the phannaceuticals sector and finds a high degree of intra-regional sales. R&D and sales are more concentrated within North America and Europe than in Asia. In addition, the relative size of the US market, compared to other parts of the triad, creates imbalances with respect to R&D, sales and international strategy. The paper written by Bruce Kogut and Anca Metiu addresses the question of what limits the international distribution of work between rich and poor coun­ tries in the software industry. Their research reveals a convergence among co­ located and distributed projects. The results indicate that the managerial experi­ ence to support global outsourcing of intellectual labor is already advanced, while creativity remains more likely to be located in rich countries. lohn Cantwell, Katherina Glac, and Rebecca Harding analyze the extent and the patterns of specialization of the internationalization of R&D since 1969 by the largest Swiss finns abroad, and by the largest non-Swiss finns in Switzer­ land. They find out that Swiss-owned finns abroad access technologies in the primary fields of their own industry, while foreign-owned finns conducting re­ search in Switzerland demonstrate more technological diversification away from their own primary fields and into sources of local Swiss traditional technological strengths.

Projects are becoming more complex and traditional project management is proving inadequate. The volume is divided into six sections, each one focusing on a specific theme. The content of each section is based on a selection of the best papers (original double blind peer reviewed contributions) presented at the annual conference of the Italian chapter of AIS, which has been held in Rome, Italy in September 2012.​

The conference was organized in order to assemble a group of researchers and practitioners in the area of Multiple Criteria Decision Making. The purpose was to discuss the current state of the art with respect to both theory and practice. This conference considered such points as recent t_heoretical developments in terms of models, the behavioral aspects of multiple criteria decision making, as well as practical applications already realized and 1n progress. In addition, there was interest in the problems of implementation of multiple-criteria methods, and the interface between theory and practice, Approximately 78 participants from 15 different countries attended the conference - both theorists and practitioners. A list of participants and their addresses is found on page 411 • Because of the relatively large number of papers presented, large morning sessions followed by smaller parallel afternoon sessions were employed'. In general a discussant commented on each paper. In addition, considerable time was reserved for small-group discussion and interaction. In addition to expressing our gratitude to the participants for their enthusiastic reception and participation in the conference, we want. to thank particularly the speakers, session chairmen and discussants. ENTER has now met for six years, providing a valuable forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss and debate their ideas and perspectives regarding the nature and role of tourism and information technology in global society. Over the years, the nature and rate of change in the tourism industry has been overwhelming. The internet and related technologies are now dominant agents of change and have created a'new economy'which requires new processes and strategies to replace those developed for the'old economy'. The theme of ENTER 2000,'Keeping Pace with Change - New Frontiers for IT and Tourism', captures the challenges that we face at the beginning of the new millennium. The papers included in this volume illustrate the incredible growth in research and development in this area and reflect its youth, vitality and at the same time, maturation. Perhaps most important, these papers document how this new technology has changed and, in tum, how the industry has responded. The series of proceedings of which this volume is a part is creating a unique body of knowledge about the intertwined emergence of tourism and technology. There are, perhaps, three overriding themes of this congress. First is the focus on the tourist. Professor Stock's keynote address'Intelligent Interfaces for the Tourist'is a good representative of a series of papers discussing how information systems, electronic markets, and user interfaces have been or can be developed to enhance the tourist experience.

Carter in their paper Governing Knowledge Sharing in Multinational Enterprises examines knowledge-sharing processes in four UK MNCs. A key challenge is to design governance architectures so that application strategy (uses of a given portfolio of knowledge) and discovery strategy (new combinations of knowledge) can be supported through knowledge sharing. A key trade-off obtains here between integration and partitioning of knowledge assets, whereby increased partitioning facilitates local knowledge sharing but complicates global integration. In addition, coordination mechanisms employed in the governance of knowledge sharing may be organized centrally or decentrally, whereby central organization may lead to knowledge loss and managerial overload while decentral organization may lead to loss of control. An important contingency in resolving these governance problems is the extent to which firms follow application and discovery strategies. In addition, the authors recommend to closely integrate incentive systems with attempts for knowledge sharing including individual incentives and rewards. Julian Birkinshaw and Carl F. Fey examine the Organization of Research and Development in Large Multinational Firms in a sample of 107 firms based in the UK and Sweden. The key challenge addressed in this paper is how knowledge creation is governed and how this impacts R&D performance. Several trade-offs obtain. First, headquarter centred vs.

The International Society for Quality of Life Studies held its first conference in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1997. Participants at the conference were allowed to submit their papers for the present volume. The submitted manuscripts went through a review and revision process, and the papers in this book represent the best articles from that process. Because the society sponsoring this volume is international in character, it is not sur­ prising that the 11 contributions are from 4 different countries: Canada (3), India (1), Netherlands (3), and the United States (4). Thus, the volume is cross-national in authorship, although we hope that future works can include more papers from additional nations. Ten of the eleven papers consider quality of life in terms of some aspect of subjective well-being. The book is broken into three sections: the first section presenting material on broad theories of subjective well­ being, the second section covering how work and income are related to subjective well-being, and the third section containing one chapter on health and one on political representation. I am proud to present these broad-ranging chapters on quality of life.

The papers in volume 6 of Research in Competence-Based Management identify, elaborate theoretically, and investigate empirically a number of new kinds of dynamics in industries and product markets. In so doing, the papers develop some important new competence perspectives on both traditional and contemporary industry dynamics. Most approaches to developing competence theory have adopted an'inside-out'approach, i.e. micro-level analyses of sources of organizational competence lead to theory that predicts industry-level interactions and outcomes. The papers in this volume, however, largely adopt an'outside-in'approach to theory development that suggests how further understanding of firm-level competences may be enabled through macro-level analyses of the resources and capabilities organizations must develop to participate in new kinds of industry and product-market dynamics.

Competition, Efficiency and Welfare contains a collection of papers in honor of Manfred Neumann. This collection was prepared as a tribute to a teacher and scholar, whose accomplishments have enriched various fields of economics. The magnitude of his interests is reflected in the breadth of topics covered in this volume: industrial economics, competition policy and related topics. However, if one unifying principle runs through Manfred Neumann's work, it is the belief in the power of competition. Born on May 16, 1933, Manfred Neumann studied economics at the University of Cologne. He graduated in 1960. In 1969 Manfred Neumann was appointed Professor of Economics at Nürnberg University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, President of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) and Chairman of Industrial Organization Study Group of the Verein für Sozialpolitik. Most of his professional career has been spent at Nürnberg, where he has helped to make the Economic Institute one of the leading research centers in Industrial Organization. He has also been involved in various advisory activities. The volume contains 18 essays. The first twelve are grouped into four categories: Innovation and R&D (Part I), Cartels (Part II), Mergers and Merger Policy (Part III), and Methodological Issues in Industrial Organization (Part IV). These papers fall within the bounds of industrial economics, which has been Manfred Neumann's primary research interest throughout his career. Part V includes two papers on theories of international trade, which has been a recurring topic of interest for Manfred Neumann through the years. The last three papers look at broader policy and macroeconomic issues. Contributors to this volume include Karl Aiginger, David B. Audretsch, Paul A. Geroski, Stephen Martin and Dennis Mueller.

A large 2008 ISECS International Colloquium on Computing, Communication, Control, and Management (CCCM 2008), was held in Guangzhou, August 2008, China. Just like the name of the Colloquium, the theme for this conference is Advancing Computing, Communication, Control, and Management Technologies. 2008 ISECS International Colloquium on Computing, Communication, Control, and Management is co-sponsored by Guangdong University of Business Studies, China, Peoples'Friendship University of Russia, Russia, Central South University, China, Southwestern University of Finance & Economics, China, and University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is also co-sponsored IEEE Technology Management Council, IEEE Computer Society, and Intelligent Information Technology Application Research Institute. Much work went into preparing a program of high quality. We received about 972 submissions. Every paper was reviewed by 3 program committee members, about 382 were selected as regular papers, representing a 39% acceptance rate for regular papers. The CCCM conferences serve as good platforms for the engineering community to meet with each other and to exchange ideas. The conference has also stroke a balance between theoretical and application development. The conference committees have been formed with over two hundred committee members who are mainly research center heads, faculty deans, department heads, professors, and research scientists from over 30 countries. The conferences are truly international meetings with a high level of participation from many countries. The response that we have received for the congress is excellent. This volume contains revised and extended research articles written by prominent researchers participating in the conference.

This volume of'Research in Competence-Based Management'focuses on a range of fundamental issues in developing competence-base theory and in undertaking competence-based research intended to contribute to management theory development. The first papers in this volume revisit and reappraise a number of foundational competence ideas, concepts, and research themes to suggest a number of conceptual distinctions and clarifications that would be useful in further theory development. Following papers assess the areas in which restatements or extensions of current competence theory may be needed or would be useful. The importance and value of tracking and sharing the dispersed knowledge resources of contemporary organizations have received widespread rec- nition in recent years. It is widely believed that with the transition from the industrial to information-based economies, organizational knowledge has emerged as the single most critical resource at both macro- and mic- levels. A major challenge for most organizations during this transition and beyond is to learn to deal with the intricacies of discovering knowledge from the vast amounts of data being generated, identifying pockets of - portant knowledge in various forms, to devise strategies and techniques to formalize parts that lend themselves to codification, and to nurture tech- cal and other solutions with which useful knowledge can be shared among relevant participants. This has the potential to produce greater knowledge utilization leading to multiplier effects in organizational performance. This calls for an approach in which both the organizational and technological dimensions of the challenge are better understood and effectively integ- ted. The papers included in this volume were selected from a collection of papers presented at an invitation-only workshop entitled'Knowledge - nagement (KM) and the Global Firm: Organizational and Technological Dimensions'held at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia in February 2003.
