- Abstract
This Special Issue of Business Process Management Journal contains selected papers presented at the 7th Canadian Quality Congress that was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The theme of the congress was: Managing Change through Quality Leadership. This volume has eight papers on a variety of interesting topics. The authors, in their efforts to understand the important role of process management in TQM are telling us what is happening now and what must happen in the future on the global stage. Beside the papers presented here, I would like to say that there were many excellent presentations on quality and innovations in healthcare industries. But, unfortunately those authors decided not to write their stories at this time for this special issue.

- Subjects
- Financial institutions--Risk management, Computer security--Security measures, Financial risk management
- Abstract
Cyber risk has emerged as a key threat to financial stability, following recent attacks on financial institutions. This paper presents a novel documentation of cyber risk around the world for financial institutions by analyzing the different types of cyber incidents (data breaches, fraud and business disruption) and identifying patterns using a variety of datasets. The other novel contribution that is outlined is a quantitative framework to assess cyber risk for the financial sector. The framework draws on a standard VaR type framework used to assess various types of stability risk and can be easily applied at the individual country level. The framework is applied in this paper to the available cross-country data and yields illustrative aggregated losses for the financial sector in the sample across a variety of scenarios ranging from 10 to 30 percent of net income.

- Abstract
This paper presents the results of the second round of the Revenue Administration Fiscal Information Tool (RA-FIT) country survey in an aggregated manner for all respondents and by income group. Notwithstanding regional biases and some data quality issues with the sample, broad insights and trends are discernible from the data, and the results form part of an evolving series that will continue to develop and grow with the International Survey On Revenue Administration (ISORA), the successor survey to RA-FIT conducted by the IMF in collaboration with the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), the Intra-European Organisation of Tax Administration (IOTA), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This paper expands on a previous one, which covered the first round of RA-FIT (Lemgruber and others 2015),1 and aims to allow countries to access information about key measures in revenue administration. Unlike the first paper, this one does not cover issues specific to customs administration but focuses rather on tax administration data.

- Abstract
This paper studies corporate performance in the aftermath of the global crisis by examining 6,581 manufacturing firms in 48 developed and developing countries in 2010, identifying factors of resilience as well as vulnerability. Based on a cross-sectional analysis, the results show that pre-crisis leverage and short-term debt have had negative effects on the speed of the recovery, while asset tangibility has had positive effects. The negative effect of leverage is non-linear, being particularly strong in firms with high pre-crisis leverage. Furthermore, the effects are different for advanced and emerging market economies. The paper also shows that the macroeconomic framework critically matters for firm growth. In particular, in countries that have allowed the exchange rate to depreciate, firms have had a faster recovery in sectors highly dependent on trade.

- Abstract
Tax provisions favoring corporate debt over equity finance (“debt bias”) are widely recognized as a risk to financial stability. This paper explores whether and how thin-capitalization rules, which restrict interest deductibility beyond a certain amount, affect corporate debt ratios and mitigate financial stability risk. We find that rules targeted at related party borrowing (the majority of today's rules) have no significant impact on debt bias—which relates to third-party borrowing. Also, these rules have no effect on broader indicators of firm financial distress. Rules applying to all debt, in contrast, turn out to be effective: the presence of such a rule reduces the debt-asset ratio in an average company by 5 percentage points; and they reduce the probability for a firm to be in financial distress by 5 percent. Debt ratios are found to be more responsive to thin capitalization rules in industries characterized by a high share of tangible assets.

- Abstract
As more and more startup companies are founded every year worldwide, building up one's own business does not get easier. Since 9 out of 10 startups fail, future entrepreneurs are well advised to take a look at potential reasons for failure and success. Learning from others'mistakes and studying success stories can improve their own performance and help to avoid critical errors. The academic paper at hand will provide valuable insights for entrepreneurs. It not only states the most important terms concerning startups but also lists the most important factors for a startup company's success, according to literature review. Delineating both internal and external factors, this thesis not only delivers a synoptic view of potential challenges inside a startup as well as in its ecosystem, but also juxtaposes these influences in opposition. The second part of this paper analyzes a series of interviews with twelve startup founders from three different regions (the province of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany, Budapest in Hungary and the state of California in the US). Their views and experiences will be summarized and put into the context of their respective startup ecosystem.

- Abstract
This paper describes issues in Korea's corporate sector, the need for restructuring, and the authorities'initiatives and challenges. It then identifies lessons from other countries'experience and conducts an econometric analysis based on cross-country aggregate data, compared with previous studies which mostly use firm-level data. This analysis finds that restructuring episodes, while sometimes challenging in the short term, have typically been associated with more rapid economic growth afterward. Corporate restructuring could have a negative effect on the labor and the financial markets in the short term, but is associated with positive growth through increased investment and capital productivity in the medium term, outpacing the negative effects.

- Abstract
As researchers well used to production frontiers of best practice, we were curious about extending the frontiers beyond current best practice and how this could be done. The papers in this ebook all focus on systems and processes to achieve this or how to measure it. The organisations covered range from public sector organisations such as education and health to private for-profits such as banks. We also wanted to explore whether authors could communicate their ideas and findings in a paper of much shorter length than the standard journal article.

- Abstract
The 21st International EurOMA (EurOMA 2014) Conference was hosted by Università degli Studi di Palermo. The conference theme was Operations Management in an Innovation Economy. According to innovation economists what primarily drives economic growth in today's knowledge-based economy is not capital accumulation but innovative capacity spurred by appropriable knowledge and technological externalities. Economics growth in innovation economics is the end-product of knowledge, R&D expenditures, licenses, technological spillovers and externalities between collaborative firms, i.e. supply chains and networks of innovation. When firms do not explicitly acknowledge and manage their operations as a concurrent activity to the management of innovation, they often encounter problems late in product development, or with manufacturing launch, logistical support, quality control, and production costs. As such, innovation process and operations management should be coordinated, rather than being viewed as separate sets of decisions and activities. We received 592 abstracts and used a doubled-blind review process, involving 127 members of the Scientific Committee, to review 586 abstracts (6 abstracts were desk rejected) and provide feedback to the authors. Of these, 513 were accepted and 73 rejected. The accepted abstracts resulted in 405 full papers in the Scientific Programme. With 3 papers subsequently withdrawn, there were 402 paper presentations in prospect. The most recurrent OM themes were: Sustainability in Operations and Logistics (42 papers); Supply Chain Management (35 papers); Innovation, Product and Service Development (32 papers); Managing Inter-firm Relationships in Supply Chains (30 papers); Healthcare OM (21 papers); Lean and Agile Operations (21 papers).

- Abstract
This eBook “Changing Dynamics in Business Marketing” for the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing was prompted by the Academy of Marketing B2B SIG Colloquium at the University of Bournemouth. It includes a Guest Editorial which looks at the contributions from three practitioner commentary articles, four research papers and a book review. All the manuscripts presented in this issue include discussions of the impact of changes created in the marketing environment, such as from the last economic crisis and advances in IT, communication technologies and social media networks. There are insights into how B2B firms, CEOs and CMOs must reconsider their practices in interacting with other businesses, customers and employees to be more vigilant and competitive in their strategies. There are different definitions and perceptions of what the business model concept is and how it is applied, so this eBook starts with a commentary paper to identify those which seem most appropriate in exploring the relationship between business models and their resources, value chains, architecture, organisation and processes supported with a case study explanation from the international logistics industry. The second commentary paper addresses the indecision of B2B Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) in using social media, resulting in their not being ready to meet the challenges the new media poses. The third commentary paper shows how a short-term view of capital investment affects marketing expenditure, often manifested some considerable time after goods have “left the factory”. The four research papers investigate a range of topics from: (a) implications of the use of Mobile Social Media (MSM) on interaction, exchange of information and creation of user-generated content in the B2B firms in the context of the UK advertising and marketing sector; (b) business adoption of Internet banking, in particular, in Tunisia, to highlight the relevance of integrating e-trust dimensions to the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and for Internet banking adoption by businesses; (c) nature of the inter-personal relationship existing between the account managers of UK insurance brokers and their business customers and where mismatches in their perceptions of ‘relationship closeness'results in role strain for such managers and conflicts; and (d) where a theoretical framework from the business literature can be developed to further a practical examination of an umbrella brand in the hotel sector in Germany and when behavioural characteristics play a significant role in explaining overall alliance success in matters of costs and services. The Book Review of Dr Sharad Sharin's textbook on business marketing is substantially based on Indian firms, but with contexts from both Western and Indian business cultures. Written at a time when the global economy was still feeling the effects of upheavals from a world-wide recession, the book illustrates the principles of how good business practices using marketing could work. With many case study examples, it makes a strong contribution to books on business marketing. The collection of material in this eBook shows that the dynamism of the business marketing environment can be felt all too keenly and that there are implications for the B2B practices of firms when faced with the need to change to address new developments or challenges in their business environments. The contributions by authors in this issue are found in their discussions, insights and analyses with recommendations. With grateful thanks to all the contributors; to Professor Sharad Sarin for sending his book to be evaluated in the Book Review; to Professor Wesley Johnston (JBIM Editor); and to the Emerald team, particularly, Diane Richardson and Adrian Paylor for the publication of this special eBook.

- Abstract
Marketing has historically received a cool reception in Australia. In a small market with limited competition, there had initially been little need to invest in marketing. Moreover, marketing's salesmanship practices sat uneasily with Australian cultural mores. Marketing's early struggle for recognition in Australia is reflected in the relative paucity of scholarly work on the history of Australian marketing industries and practice. This special edition seeks to address this gap. The papers are loosely divided into three sections: product, place, and promotion. Under product and branding, contributors cover Vegemite's entry into the US market over the 1960s-80s, Bushells'marketing strategies in the 1980s, and the ‘It's Time'political campaigns of the 1970s and 1990s. Contributions on place explore the David Jones department store in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, and K mart and Target in the 1960s and 1970s. The final section on promotion includes studies of the Women's Budget Bureau over the 1900s-1930s, a comparison of J. Walter Thompson and McCann Erickson's respective entries into the Australian advertising market in the 1930s and 1960s, and personal reflection on the experiences of studying the relationship between Australian and American advertising industries from United States. In addition to addressing a gap in marketing historiography, these papers also reveal the active connections between the national and the global and illustrate the degree to which marketing ideas and practices respond to and are informed by national and international forces.

- Abstract
Partial least squares (PLS) path modeling is a multivariate statistical technique that is frequently used in various disciplines of business research, such as information systems, international business, marketing, operations management, organizational behavior, or strategic management. After lively discussions about whether and, if so, how PLS needs to emancipate from covariance-based SEM and to progress, several substantial changes in the understanding of PLS took place over the last two years, accompanied by new developments. In the light of the changes, the 2nd International Symposium on Partial Least Squares Path Modeling – The Conference for PLS Users took place in June 2015 in Seville, Spain. More than 100 participants exchanged ideas about the new developments around PLS path modeling. The authors of the best conference papers were invited to submit their papers to one of three special issues: The first aims at prediction-oriented modeling in business research by means of PLS path modeling and is published in the Journal of Business Research. The second focuses on European management research using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and is published in the European Management Journal. This third special issue, which is published in Industrial Management & Data Systems and combines tutorials about specific extensions of PLS with scientific applications. This special issue has two parts. The first part focuses on guidelines and tutorials on PLS path modeling and contains five papers. The second part contains applications of PLS path modeling which illustrate how PLS path modeling can help generate new insights in industrial management, information systems, and technology management.

This Special Issue of Gender in Management: An International Journal comprises an inaugural collection of papers through which we get to'see'women managers through a media gaze and to learn from research into popular culture through gendered analysis of television, autobiographies and media press. We are delighted to include research papers which convey how gendered media influences, and is influenced by, women's political, public and organizational leadership and how media construct gendered (mis)representations of women leaders and managers.

- Abstract
Theoretically, the research on CSR in South Asia is largely influenced by the insights produced by various frameworks of political economy, institutional, and cultural theories (in particular critical management). The geographical focus of the research largely is on India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The articles in this e-book represent three different country contexts, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and India. This e-book will not revolutionize our view on CSR in South Asia as a region but we believe that the articles, each in their own way, contribute to our ongoing discussions of CSR in this region, particularly the countries (Afghanistan, Bhutan, and India) that are addressed in the included articles. In particular, the papers on Afghanistan and Bhutan extend the geographical focus of the research as well as highlight the role of religion, institutions, state, and MNCs in shaping CSR agenda. The paper on India offers a lens to observe the intersection between CSR and Corporate Social Entrepreneurship and in this sense it identifies a new trend that may transform the role of business organizations in India.

The logistics function has always been central to retail firms'performance because it co-ordinates the product and information flows from suppliers and manufacturers to retailers and, finally, to consumers (Bourlakis, 1998). However, over the few years we have witnessed a major transformation in retail logistics, driven by changes in demand and stimulated by technologies such as e-commerce, mobile commerce, tracking and tracing, and data analytics. These changes have led to the development of multi-channel and omni-channel offerings (Rao et al., 2009), which are altering business models and forcing retailers and manufacturers to rethink the way they reach customers. Similarly, we have seen the rise of ethical customers who are putting pressure on retailers to improve their environmental and social credentials (Mena, et al. 2011; Spence and Bourlakis, 2009). Managing these challenges requires significant investments in warehousing, distribution and retail infrastructure. The development of fulfillment centers, dark stores, home delivery networks, new transport technologies and customer collection points are all responses to these changes. These developments are also creating new challenges such as the dramatic increase in customer returns and the associated cost and availability implications (Ettouzani, et al. 2012). The logistics and SCM research community has been active in helping retailer organizations understand these changes in the marketplace and their implications for retail logistics theory and practice. However, the dynamic nature of the phenomenon means that it is necessary to continuously investigate new developments and understand their impact on retail logistics. To this end, over the last two years, IJPDLM has published a number of papers that address various retailing issues. Topics include demand management in the grocery industry (Alftan et al., 2015), retail out-of-stocks (Ehrenthal et al., 2014), on shelf availability (Moussaoui et al., 2016), the use of data aggregation to mask the bullwhip effect (Jin et al., 2015), reverse logistics (Hazen et al., 2014; Morgan, Richey and Autry, 2016) and sustainability in e-commerce (Mangiaracina et al., 2015). This Special Issue further addresses the growing opportunities for research in the field of retail logistics. Twenty seven papers were received for this Special Issue and seven have been selected for publication based on the rigor of the research methods and the relevance and value of the findings for both academic and practitioner communities. The chosen papers cover a wide range of subjects including omni-channel logistics, product returns, e-tailing, inventory management, and the management of ‘unsaleable'products. These papers incorporate various research methodologies using empirical data to produce insightful findings in relation to challenges and opportunities in contemporary retail logistics

34. The Psychology of Consumer and Social Influence : Theory and Research

- Abstract
The Psychology of Consumer and Social Influence stands out from other books on the topic of “influence”. Most books on influence or persuasion select authors to focus on subsets of theoretical issues within a fairly narrow research focus. In this book, you will find a set of consumer and social researchers - some among the best in the country who address topics within their areas of expertise. The papers presented here should have a unique appeal because of the diverse range of issues that are examined. The papers are broadly connected within the consumer and social influence domain, but vary considerably in the theoretical matters the chapters address: empirical studies on how indirect social influence can affect different styles of thinking that result in counterintuitive outcomes; new insights into the issue of self-control as a limited resource and how it affects susceptibility to persuasion and compliance; the different types of appeals most effective in facilitating abstinence from unhealthy habits; how the effectiveness of a company's public response to brand failures is contingent on different factors involved in such failures; the persuasiveness of different forms of online versus offline consumer influence strategies; an expanded theoretical approach to social responsiveness integrated into an emerging area of theoretical physics: socio-physical modeling; and finally a controversial chapter that defines, tests and validates a scale that measures a commonly used descriptive vulgarity (negative influence) and then demonstrates its utility in predicting interpersonal and social problems. The empirical and conceptual chapters compiled in this book should be of interest to researchers working in the areas of consumer or social influence looking for new theoretical insights and ideas to investigate, as well as for those seeking stimulating questions or results for classroom learning and discussion. This book provides both.

- Abstract
Alternative types of ownership and participatory managerial practices have recently been intensively debated. The Great Recession has revived interest in cooperative and labor-managed organizations. In addition, employee participation in decision-making and financial performance has consistently attracted attention during the last 20 years. The articles in this Volume contribute to both of these topics. The first set of articles studies the relationship among business cycles, alternative forms of ownership, and employee voice. These papers take various theoretical and empirical approaches and investigate many industries and countries. They show how the economic downturn is leading to increased incidence of employee ownership but also undermining employee voice by increasing the incidence of atypical employment. The second set of papers looks inside firms. The topics include the relationship between ownership and innovation and how financial participation and group incentives affect employee attitudes and work effort. The contributions in this volume provide stimulating research in the broad area of participatory and labor-managed organizations.

- Abstract
All business organizations strive for increasing their growth by seizing new opportunities, reducing enterprise costs, attracting new customers and retaining old customers. In doing so, business intelligence and analytics allow business organizations to make better plans, informed decisions, and monitor their progress towards planned goals and objectives. The more disruptive power of IT technologies comes synergistically. Individual IT technologies do not work in isolation. Business intelligence systems are built on other digital technologies, such as mobile and collaborative technologies, cloud computing, virtualization, and enterprise resource planning and enterprise information systems. This volume presents sixteen of the most insightful research papers amongst the various contributions accepted for presentations at the International Conference on Information Systems and Technologies (ICIST 2013) and the International Conference on Software Engineering and New Technologies (ICSENT'12), held in Tangier, Morocco, and Hammamet, Tunisia respectively. These papers truly represent what today's CIOs see as the top-priority disruptive IT technologies that will help business organizations seize digital opportunities to increase their growth and reduce operating costs.

- Abstract
This book is a collection of the best seventeen papers from the first Management Theory Conference held at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California, on September 27 and 28, 2013. The authors of these papers are some of the best management researchers in the world, including: Anette Mikes, Robert S. Kaplan, and Amy C. Edmondson (Harvard Business School); Sarah Harvey (University College London); Randall S. Peterson (London Business School); Jack A. Goncalo and Verena Krause (Cornell University); Karen A. Jehn (University of Melbourne); Yally Avrahampour (London School of Economics and Political Science); Tammy L. Madsen (Santa Clara University); and Sim B. Sitkin (Duke University). All of the papers in this book present the latest theoretical developments that were discussed at the first Management Theory Conference. The purpose of the conference was to help address the shortage of new management and organization theories. The mission of the conference was to facilitate, recognize, and reward the creation of new theories that advance our understanding of management and organizations. The conference was held to motivate management researchers to create new theories and to provide researchers with a supportive forum where those new theories could be presented, discussed, and published.Chapter Seventeen is the winner of the Wiley Outstanding New Management Theory Award. Authors Chris P. Long, Sim B. Sitkin, and Laura B. Cardinal present a theory to explain the drivers of managerial efforts to promote trust, fairness, and control. They theorize how superior-subordinate conflicts stimulate managers'concerns about managerial legitimacy and subordinate dependability in performing tasks, and hypothesize how managers attempt to address these concerns using trustworthiness-promotion, fairness-promotion, and control activities. This book also contains written summaries of the two keynote addresses that were given at the conference by Roy Suddaby (editor of Academy of Management Review) and Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford University), which comprise Chapters Eighteen and Nineteen. Professors Suddaby and Pfeffer present a fascinating debate of the future and new directions of management and organization theories.

- Abstract
Relationships of individual and groups among three-plus firms represent the cornerstone concept in business-to-business (B2B) contexts. The three-plus firms include manufacturer-supplier to manufacturer-customer to distributor-customer, and facilitators (e.g., transportation and management consulting firms). The common thread of the five papers in this volume is that making sense and achieving deep knowledge of three-plus B2B relationships are necessary antecedents for achieving high operating effectiveness, high (on-time) efficiency, and sustaining profits for each firm in these relationships. As the titles of the five papers imply, reading the volume provides deep insights into the specifics of how high performing three-plus B2B relationships influences these three major objectives of the firm: National Cultures? Impacts on Western Industrial Buyer-Seller Relational Process Models; Developing Guanxi Relations; Industrial Buyer-Seller Relations in a Chinese Context; Adaptation in Business Contexts; Working Triadic Relationships; How Do Managers See It?
