Iconic baseball writer Bill James, in 1987, frustrated with MLB's labor stoppages and the decline of the minor leagues, wrote that the minors “were an abomination … if you're selling a sport and the players don't care about winning, that's not a sport. That's a fraud … an exhibition masquerading as a contest.” Bill imagined a better model and proposed that, as opposed to limiting the number of teams in MLB to protect parity, a free market was capable of sustaining many more franchises — hundreds, even — if we would just allow it to sort out the level at which those cities might best compete. Cap in Hand goes a step further, arguing that a free market in sports teams and athletes once existed and could work again if the monopolists of MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL would simply relent from salary-restraint schemes and reserve-clause models that result in elite talent being spread as thinly as possible and mediocrity being rewarded via amateur drafts and equalization payments. In fact, the model for this exists and may be the most wildly popular and monetarily successful of all professional sports: European football. The economies of the European Union are today highly integrated. Constitutive part of this high degree of integration is the euro which unites most of the Member Stateswithintheeuro-zone. Most economic textbooks, especially from the Anglo-Saxon area, tend to c- centrate more on the technically correct and often model-based presentation of their subject-matter than on its socio-political background. However, in view of the significance of economic reality for every citizen in Europe, it is also important to reach those who have not obtained a university degree in economics.

The industrial revolution and the creation of the modern (national) state are two of the most important historical processes to have occurred in Europe during the 19th century. The state and other bodies of governance play an important role in the development of capitalist market societies since the 18th century. But modern market economies are to a large degree a product of the interplay between market and governance. Yet we are often told a strikingly different tale about the modern economy, at least how it ought to work and operate - as far as possible without public interference. Even more frequently we have been taught that the modern capitalist market economy is a product of an industrial revolution, originating with the UK in the middle of the 18th century propelled by laissez faire and the triumph of free markets which gradually liberated themselves from the grip of an old dirigiste state. This book argues that in order to get a better understanding of this period and the rise of modern industrial capitalism it is necessary to link the industrial revolution in its various forms to a political and institutional context of state-making and the creation of modern national states. Professor Magnusson demonstrates that a historical narrative which does not acknowledge the role of the state and public governance for the establishment of the modern capitalist market economy is fundamentally flawed.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: Innovation is a key driver for companies'long-term success. Although, all companies can be distinguished as innovative in some form, they differentiate significantly in their strategy or activity to pursue innovation. There exist two types of activities, the explorative one on the one hand and the exploitative one on the other hand. The explorative one is applied by firms that invest heavily in research and explore new areas of technology. One example is Google, which grew from the pure search engine into a firm that developed an image-recognition application, autonomous vehicle technology and broadband services. Alternatively, the exploitative activity is applied when firms invest in deepening their knowledge in specific areas and become top market leaders. Samsung for example is an expert in electronics for consumer goods such as TV, mobile phones, LCD and LED panels and semiconductors. The focus of this master thesis is to define and to understand the two groups of explorative and exploitative innovators and determine when, and under which circumstances, a type is more successful than the other. In order to do so, the data on large firms'innovation strategy, which is available in their patent portfolio, are collected and investigated. The collected patents are classified according to the following criterion: is the patent a radical innovation or just an incremental add-on? The data source is acquired from Google Patents which has become a dominant source in innovation research. Results indicate that for some cases there is some evidence for a positive relationship between an innovation orientation of the firm associated with higher degree of exploration and financial performance measured in stock return. This is particularly the case for firms which own patents citing other patents outside its own technological class. With the given sample, there is no evidence for technological dynamism in an environment to moderate the relationship. This empirical assessment gives implications for further research.

In tandem with other global agendas adopted that year (such as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and UN Habitat's New Urban Agenda) it remains the global and regional blueprint for sustainable development despite the COVID-19 pandemic.The term'localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)'has been used to capture the importance of subnational governments for achieving national SDG agendas. However, there is little deeper analysis of the required nexus between fiscal, political, and legal arrangements for SNGs; their involvement in national policy arenas (which discuss and decide on national SDG strategies); and the need for locally disaggregated data systems on the one hand, and effective SDG localization strategies on the other hand. This book deals with de minimis aid and demonstrates that it is both a sui generis legal concept in the context of State aid and subject to a complex regime. On the one hand, it is a sui generis concept in that (i) it seeks to strike a balance between simplifying the grant process and not distorting competition in the internal market, while being a tool that Member States are able to apply easily and (ii) it is subject to ex ante control by Member States. On the other hand, it is complex in that (i) it requires determining the sectors of economic activity it applies to; (ii) a few notions specific to the regime are not easy to understand, such as the notion of'single undertaking'; and (iii) it requires combining four de minimis regimes (one general and three special), which in turn requires reconciling those regimes with each other and with other aid, not least because of the cumulation rules. Lastly, these particularities were also reflected in the recovery regime for unlawful de minimis aid. Aimed at lawyers, legal consultants and those working in undertakings as well as students, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the current de minimis regimes and is clear and complete, while also proposing a fresh view on the area of EU State aid law. Issue ownership theory is a tale of two actors. On the one hand, it theorizes how parties compete with each other in their struggle for votes. On the other hand, issue ownership isabout the citizen. It claims that voters are more likely to support a party if they think it is competent to handle issues they care about.This book provides unique insights into the undertheorized and understudied links betweenparty competence and the vote. It argues that issue ownership voting (or competence-based voting) consists of three assumptions: First, voters are primarily interested in havingissues handled by a competent party. Unlike in other issue voting models this impliesthat voters are reluctant (or unable) to deal with the specificities of the exact solutionto a political problem. Though positional considerations feed into evaluations of partycompetence, other factors are important, too. First published in 1999. Firms in manufacturing industries are influenced by the market-oriented liberalization reform policies in many developing countries since the late eighties. However, studies applying appropriate methodology to appropriate data seldom analyze the impact of reforms on the performance of production units such as manufacturing firms. The central point of this book is to address this issue by comparing firms'achievement with'best practice'performance before and after reforms. This form of analysis is not new but it emphasizes a new focus or realignment of thinking within neoclassical economics to develop an analytical framework. This book examines the productivity growth of Bangladesh manufacturing firms as component measures of changes in capacity realization and technical progress. The significant feature of this approach is that it allows for the inefficiency of firms, and thus productivity growth is estimated rather than taking it as a residual as is usually measured in the traditional growth accounting approach. High rates of technological progress, on the one hand, can co-exist with low rates of capacity realization. On the other hand, relatively low rates of technological progress can co-exist with an improving capacity realization. As a result specific policy actions are required to address the difference in the sources of variation in productivity. This title was first published in 2001. Older people have been characterized by two mutually contradictory stereotypes. One the one hand they have been portrayed as a powerful lobby, growing demographically and able to demand large redistributions of the nation's income in their direction. On the other hand they have been typified as a marginalized group at high risk of poverty and exclusion and, in a political context, largely powerless. This book examines, using original research conducted by the Older People and Politics Project (OPPOL) within Exeter University's Sociology Department, the reality of the impact of the increasing number of older people on the British political process. The project had three main investigative concerns: how effective are pressure groups and lobbyists for older people?; how is the power and influence of older people perceived by older people themselves and the general public?; and how are politicians responding to older people and their needs?

Working for a financial service provider raises the awareness for certain issues within this sector and how those could be solved by means of new trends such as big data. This undergraduate thesis presents an exploration of the effects of big data on the supply chain and on decision making. A topic of significant relevance, especially since the literature review discovered that there had been insufficient research conducted on the supply chains of service providers. Furthermore, this investigation of existing literature created a frame for the content of the dissertation by displaying the roots and development of big data and its farreaching impact in and beyond the business context. The research method that was used for this dissertation consists of qualitative data collection by interviewing employees of a key player in the German leasing and asset finance market, providing insight to the business from the industry leaders viewpoint. After conducting and analysing the input, the key findings on one hand corresponded with parts of the reviewed literature in terms of the application of big data and on the other hand filled the identified gap regarding services supply chains. More specifically, as a tangible outcome an exemplary supply chain framework was created, based on the identified opportunities and threats regarding an implementation of big data as well as their critical evaluation. The results ranged from chances for increased efficiency of background processes and improved effectivity of sales processes, leading to a greater profitability on one side, to being confronted with issues of privacy, economic viability and the adaptions caused by the better decision making stemming from enhanced insights through data science, predictive analytics and big data, on the other side. In order to fully exploit these identified opportunities, further research within this field is recommenced, especially in regard to the increasing relevance of the sector and the megatrend itself as well as the actual technical implementation.

In June 2016, Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, wrestled with how to sustain Israel's strong innovation track record and the country's reputation as the'start-up nation.'Despite the economic miracle the country had wrought since its founding, he knew he could not be complacent. Netanyahu had to assess whether it was time to sound the alarm, and whether drastic and immediate measures were needed to right the innovation economy ship. Bibi mulled over which policies or interventions would best curb the erosion of Israel's competitive position as an innovation powerhouse and how best to promote social equality. He pondered whether public policy could make a difference or whether the market and societal currents, responsible for these trends, were too strong for him and his government to try to contend with.

There is no single code or standard, no panacea that will lead to corporate responsibility (CR). Yet, now, more than ever before, corporations are waking up to the fact that they must adopt codes and implement standards to satisfy the growing demands of an ever-wider and ever-less-trustful spectrum of stakeholders. So, where do companies start? Information overload is nowhere more apparent than in the field of CR. There are millions of pages and web pages written on codes and standards, but most of it is spin: organisations punting to sell their code or standard.
