402. Challenges in Expanding Development Assistance
- Author

- Abstract
This paper highlights the macro and microeconomic challenges associated with success of the effort to mobilize 0.7 percent of GNP for official development assistance (ODA). To promote achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, enhanced ODA must be as productive as possible. In weighing the distribution of enhanced ODA among countries, the paper emphasizes the need to limit potentially adverse “real transfer effects.” It recommends a multi-pronged approach to ODA that includes, inter alia, in addition to direct bilateral transfers, enhanced use of trust funds and the financing of global public goods.

- Abstract
The paper discusses key incentive-related issues of the sovereign debt restructuring mechanism recently outlined by the IMF First Deputy Managing Director. The structure of incentives in the mechanism should be consistent with the principle of favoring market-oriented, voluntary solutions to financial crises. The paper frames the mechanism in the context of involving the private sector in financial crisis resolution (PSI), and identifies the conditions for setting up an appropriate incentive structure. The paper explores issues relating to the functioning of the mechanism, including access policy on IMF resources; the power to activate the mechanism; its relation with intermediate PSI instruments; and its impact on investment in emerging markets.

- Abstract
In this book, the story of how IKEA and its paper producers struggled to solve the problem of creating environmentally friendly paper constitutes the foundation of a discussion of technological development. Through a detailed analysis of the case-study, the authors demonstrate the necessity of including social, technological and economical factors when dealing with such issues.Focusing on the interactive aspects of commercial and technological development, they examine how new solutions are developed and shaped in relation to the different companies and organizations involved. They investigate resources in terms of how they are related and built into other resources through historical and contemporary interaction processes. Their overall emphasis is on dealing with the issue of how different, closely and distantly related companies and organizations are affected when resources are developed.

- Abstract
Buried in paper? As new technologies, threats of litigation, and the onslaught of e-business innovations change the very nature of work, organizations need ways to safely and properly manage information. This revised and expanded edition of Sampson's earlier classic shows how records and information management practices jointly contribute to an organization's financial well being, be it public or private, non- or for-profit. Recordkeeping practices affect business objectives, processes, functions, and ultimately everyone in the organization. This book covers recordkeeping in all media, including paper, microfilm, electronic, and other storage modes.Instead of focusing on records media and information technologies, Sampson shows why organizations must focus on the content and value of records as they are determined by the organization's operating needs, the government's requirements, and relevant legislation. She shows how to create an essential uniformity in records management, one that integrates the many media systems you use into a single master system. Also included is a cautionary section explaining why skillful records and information management is essential to safeguard an organization's legal rights. This book provides fresh management perspectives and new business strategies, showing how to cope with the growing dependence on electronic records.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,0, University of Würzburg (Lehrstuhl für Logistik und Quantitative Methoden), language: English, abstract: In developing countries people do not have adequate access to essential medicines. These countries'health care systems lack the financial resources for providing appropriate and comprehensive medical support. Moreover, there is a demand for medical innovations which allow fighting neglected diseases. Global health organizations provide assistance during the procurement process of medicines for countries which are subjected to these challenges. In order to ensure that only the right products for the intended purpose at appropriate quality levels reach those in need, these organizations require specific quality standards from their suppliers. With the demand for the implementation of quality assurance measures for pharmaceutical manufactures, the question about the impact of quality standards arises. This thesis provides answers to the question whether and how market participants are affected by these factors. For this purpose, this work makes use of several papers dealing with the effects of introducing a minimum quality standard (MQS). Since organizations aim at ensuring security of supply at affordable prices, further questions evolve regarding new product development and competition between firms: How can organizations incentivize innovation and market entry of pharmaceutical manufacturers? Which tools do they use and can these tools address possible drawbacks of the introduction of a MQS? An answer to the latter question is given by connecting the results of game-theoretical models with the approaches of existing incentive mechanisms in global health. The remaining part of this thesis is structured in the following way: Section 2 presents three organizations and their approaches to ensure the product's compliance with quality standards. In section 3, several game-theoretical models on MQS are analyzed and compared. The analysis highlights the models'findings, as well as differences between them and the models'construction. Section 4 considers several incentive mechanisms for suppliers.

- Abstract
The implementation of a 1999 White Paper on Rural Development was superseded by the construction boom in the early 2000s, which although bringing welcome jobs to rural areas was an unsustainable form of economic development. As a result, when the crisis hit, it hit rural areas disproportionally hard because neither the development infrastructure nor the strategic ideas were in place to deal with the challenge. Rural economic development issues had fallen in national priorities: in the 2011 Programme for Government, ‘rural'was only mentioned once – and then only in relation to water. With a growing awareness that something needed to be done and done quickly, Prof Cathal O'Donoghue lobbied for and got approval to establish a Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) in 2012. Its work formed the basis of significant policy developments, such as the establishment of a new Government Department and the roll out of an Action Plan for Rural Development. UNLOCKING RURAL POTENTIAL builds upon a decade's analytical work by Prof O'Donoghue as the Head of Teagasc's Rural Economy & Development Programme, as CEDRA's CEO and as a Director of the Burren Lowlands Development Company. The aim is to bring together in an informative non-technical manner issues associated with the rural economy, providing a commentary on the issues and policies that affect Rural Ireland. The book starts with a short history of the rural economy since the 1950s, tracking some of the main trends and drivers. The next chapters define what Rural Ireland is and why we should be concerned about rural development. The middle of the book focuses on policy mechanisms to support jobs built around rural resources, in the local economy or in exporting. It finishes on the governance and policy formation mechanisms needed for sustainable, on-going policy development so as not to repeat the problems of the past. Structured as a series of magazine article-length chapters, UNLOCKING RURAL POTENTIAL deals with myths, discusses challenges and presents solutions to help citizens understand the issues and policies that relate to Rural Ireland.

- Abstract
This open access book describes methods of mortality forecasting and discusses possible improvements. It contains a selection of previously unpublished and published papers, which together provide a state-of-the-art overview of statistical approaches as well as behavioural and biological perspectives. The different parts of the book provide discussions of current practice, probabilistic forecasting, the linearity in the increase of life expectancy, causes of death, and the role of cohort factors. The key question in the book is whether it is possible to project future mortality accurately, and if so, what is the best approach. This makes the book a valuable read to demographers, pension planners, actuaries, and all those interested and/or working in modelling and forecasting mortality.

- Abstract
The twenty-first century has thus far been characterised by a persistent amplification of diverse and interconnected global flows, as well as various attempts to control, harness and channel these flows for individual and collective benefits. Whether we resist, appropriate, or simply observe those forces, for most of us they have meant significant change and adaptation. Conceiving crowdedness broadly, the work in this volume engages with increased exposure to the lives and realities of both proximate and distant others, facilitated by the perpetual motion of globalisation. The chapters approach crowdedness from a range of perspectives. These include a consideration of the expectations of migrating health professionals and the responsibilities of host governments, and humanitarian professionals'perspectives on whether their sector can genuinely localise. Two chapters consider research ethics in development and humanitarian practice respectively, and the final two propose a role for virtue ethics in addressing identity politics and employee motivation. Together these papers demonstrate the broad impacts of globalisation, turning to ethics to inform response and engagement now and in the unpredictable future.

- Abstract
First published in 1987. This volume explores the inter-war unemployment problem and the development of economic and social policy in relation to that problem. Contemporary policies and levels of unemployment can only be compared with the inter-war period and in recent years economists and other commentators have increasingly turned their attention to the 1930s. This book is written by a group of expert historians and policy analysts who have been in the forefront of recent research. In particular, new insights into economic policy which have come from the release of cabinet and departmental papers at The Public Record Office are revealed. Recent economic theory is also taken into account and the findings question established views on many grounds. New economic lessons from the 1930s are suggested and some astonishing similarities to the 1980s and demonstrated. This work will be essential reading for students of modern British history and economic and social history as well as economic policy and government and politics.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of applied sciences, Munich, course: MBA Entrepreneurship - MBA Master Thesis on Blockchain Technology and Travel, language: English, abstract: The following master thesis paper explores the possibility of resolving a major issue of the travel industry around how (non-refundable) reservations on lodging properties could be exchanged in a B2B market place by using blockchain technology as the exchange layer. To provide the reader with background knowledge first an introduction into definitions around B2B market spaces, the travel industry and blockchain are being made. Here the commercial structure of volume-related cost metrics of such B2B marketplaces are explained. This is then followed by quick introduction into the travel industry, its different distribution segments online (like OTAs) and offline (Retail) and the related suppliers and technology around them. For a deeper understanding on the financial background operations the two different main billing models are explained: Merchant versus Agency. Whereas the Agency model primarily is based on the traveler settling the bill himself upon check-out, the Merchant model works on collecting money upfront from the traveler (with the effect of usually Merchant rates being cheaper than Agency rates). This further gets segmented into who takes the payment (supplier or B2B partner) and how the financial setup works in terms of payment guarantees, billing cycles and dispute handling. Blockchain technology is explained in the next chapter, from its first known functionality as a pure cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) to the next step of technological evolution where the payments of those crypto currencies are then tied to a set of business rules called “smart contracts”, rooted in the Ethereum blockchain technology framework. The first step of then building the theoretical model was an analysis of data to find out the addressable market size, which is roughly in an USD billion-dollar annual turnover range. This then was followed by setting up an according market place framework, supported by a set of technology requirements on blockchain operations in order to create a stable and clearly structured business environment. Described steps here are the initial setup, the distribution of the “FO$” crypto coin, overall market place functionality where underwriters would guarantee stability of both used crypto and fiat currencies. Based on this theoretical model a SWOT-analysis was then conducted, considering the various internal and external success and failure factors for this framework.

- Abstract
Latin America is a well recognized and growing market, but its poor infrastructure, explosive urbanization, expensive and inefficient logistics, and multiple social problems continue to pose major problems to logistics professionals and academics. The uniqueness and complexity of these issues have long daunted scholars, and there remains an important gap in the literature around Latin American supply chain management and logistics (SCM&L). Supply Chain Management and Logistics in Latin America brings together leading scholars across Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and the USA in order to address this gap. The chapters collected here, all of which are drawn from selected papers presented at the 2016 MIT SCALE Latin American Conference on Logistics and Supply Chain Management, offer perspectives from five different countries—Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Peru—and provide insights into cases and new methods written by people who have faced the challenges they discuss. The authors cover a broad range of subjects: in addition to general contributions to qualitative and quantitative methods in supply chain management and coverage of cases of global importance such as the Panama Canal expansion, they offer insights into regionally specific problems around freight corridors in Colombia, reverse logistics and recycling in Colombia, supply risk management in Colombia, and socially oriented logistics in low-income communities in Peru. Since Latin America is one of the most urbanized regions in the world, with about eighty percent of the population living in cities, questions around urban logistics also receive heavy coverage, with four chapters discussing issues unique to very high-density cities and megacities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, and Quito. For its explorations of important themes, methods, and local topics within a crucial and ever-expanding market, Supply Chain Management and Logistics in Latin America is a valuable resource for educators, researchers, and practitioners.

- Abstract
This volume of Research in Economic Anthropology, which presents ten peer-reviewed anthropological papers, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the series by taking a close look at human vulnerability: the ways in which people attempt to cope with it and barriers to successfully overcoming it. The two leading articles both take up the issue of microfinance; Daniel Murphy examines the influences of this in the lives of pastoralists in Mongolia, and Megan Hinrichsen explores related processes among vendors in Quito, Ecuador. Next, Elena Sischarenco looks at ways of dealing with vulnerability in the northern Italian construction industry. Sarah Lyon investigates smallholders'experiences with, and adaptations to, the coffee rust disaster in Oaxaca, Mexico, as well as the functions of fair trade organizations. Rounding out the first half of the volume is Raja Swamy's analysis of post-tsunami reconstruction in Tamil Nadu, India. The second half starts with Janneke Verheijen's investigation of women's survival strategies in rural Malawi, southeast Africa, and Lai Wo's study of intimate relationships and transactions between Western men and Southeast Asian women in Hong Kong. Courtney Lewis explores political and economic sovereignty among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina, USA. Finally, the volume turns to the past with Kari Henquinet's examination of the evolution of American faith-based overseas development aid projects in the 20th century, and with Serge Svizzero's and Clement Tisdell's analysis of Early Bronze Age desert kite use for trapping gazelles in parts of Southwest Asia. Ultimately, it is hoped that this and other scholarly investigations into human vulnerability will lead to better preventive and curative measures, for an imperfect world.

- Abstract
Allan H. Meltzer (1928–2017), a leading monetary economist of the twentieth century, is memorialized in eleven essays by prominent economists. Among his achievements, Meltzer transformed the field of central banking and dissected the economic disasters of the 1930s and late 2000s, as well as the avoidance of disaster in the 1970s. Focusing on his landmark A History of the Federal Reserve, 1913–1986, the first section argues that the Fed's biggest successes are tied to its adherence to classical monetary theory and also examines the monetarist counterrevolution. Next, the book turns to Meltzer's thinking on the monetary transmission mechanism and his close work with Karl Brunner on the Brunner-Meltzer Model; it argues that Meltzer's understanding of monetary economics could be used to measure the impact of the Fed's activities. Finally, Meltzer's contributions to public policy are examined, including his proposed reforms to the International Monetary Fund and his activities at the Carnegie Mellon Graduate School of Industrial Administration. The conference papers that compose this volume celebrate Meltzer's fifty-year career at Carnegie Mellon. The book ends with a transcribed interview, conducted just a few months before his death, in which he shares sharp-witted insights about economics and his legacy. Contributors: Michael Bordo, James Bullard, Joshua R. Hendrickson, Robert Hetzel, Peter N. Ireland, Robert Lucas, Edward Nelson, Gerald P. - Abstract
In the 1980s, real estate developer and banker Charles H. Keating executed one of the largest savings and loans frauds in United States history. Keating had long used the courts to muzzle critical reporting of his business dealings, but aggressive reporting by a small trade paper called the National Thrift News helped bring down Keating and offered an inspiring example of business journalism that speaks truth to power. Rob Wells tells the story through the work of Stan Strachan, a veteran financial journalist who uncovered Keating's misdeeds and links to a group of US senators—the Keating Five—who bullied regulators on his behalf. Editorial decisions at the National Thrift News angered advertisers and readers, but the newsroom sold ownership on the idea of investigative reporting as a commercial opportunity. Examining the National Thrift News's approach, Wells calls for a new era of business reporting that can—and must—embrace its potential as a watchdog safeguarding the interests of the public.

- Abstract
This is a comprehensive biography of Clarence Charles Hatry, 1888-1965, an enigmatic and charismatic public figure. Hatry was the son of Jewish immigrant parents who became a company promoter and whose companies collapsed in 1929, leading to a crash on the London stock exchange. He was brought down by a desperate fraud. At his trial three months later, the judge said that he could not imagine a worse crime.Analysing transactions in detail, the book reveals Hatry's brilliance as a manipulator and a world-class networker and persuader. It also demonstrates his vain belief in his ability to overcome any risks and his insecurity which led him to surround himself with sycophants who would not challenge his ideas. It shows how others used Hatry to make money, and, as he destroyed himself, as a scapegoat who distracted from the City's failings. Despite his deepest ambitions, he remained an outsider. Until now there has been no full biography of Clarence Hatry, which may be attributable to the lack of records, as his business papers are believed all to have been destroyed. This comprehensive biography is based on examination of the memoirs of Hatry's contemporaries, the archives and records which they and their companies preserved, and press reports of Hatry's activities. Marking the 90th anniversary of Hatry's collapse, this book will be important reading for academics and researchers looking to gain a greater understanding of the context of the 1929 crash, or of financial crises generally.

- Abstract
Ever since the 2007–8 global financial crisis and its aftermath, Hyman Minsky's theory has never been more relevant. Throughout his career, Jan Kregel has called attention to Minsky's contributions to understanding the evolution of financial systems, the development of financial fragility and instability, and designing the financial structure necessary to support the capital development of the economy. Building on Minsky, Kregel developed a framework to analyze how different financial structures develop financial fragility over time. Rather than characterizing financial systems as market-based or bank-based, Kregel argued that it is necessary to distinguish between the risks that are carried on the balance sheets of banks and other financial institutions. This volume, brought together by Felipe C. Rezende, highlights these major contributions from Kregel through a collection of his influential papers from various journals and conferences. Kregel's approach provides a strong theoretical background to understand the making and unfolding of the crisis and helps us to draw policy implications to improve financial stability, and suggest an alternative financial structure for a market economy. In this book, his knowledge is consolidated and the ideas he puts forward offer a path for future developments in economics which will be of great interest to those studying and researching in the fields of economics and finance.

Published in 1998, this book looks at unemployment in Ireland, the country's most serious social and economic problem. It is the major contributor to poverty, exclusion and social decay. This book contributes to the growing debate on the unemployment problem in Ireland. It is the first academic collection of papers on this issue and contains contributions from some of Ireland's most respected economists. It offers alternative views of the Irish labour market, with these views shedding light on many aspects of the unemployment problem, including exchange rates influences, aggregate demand analysis, labour market policies and the historical perspective. Since this book assesses the problem of unemployment from different perspectives, it should widen the discussion of this most serious issue.

In many cases these regions contain habitats and landscapes of international importance; they have also often escaped some of the environmental damage caused by industrialization. But, as the papers'reveal, attempts by the EU to safeguard these environmental benefits are often contradicted by the EU's own development policies, bringing air pollution from new roads, contamination from new industries, and leading to habitat destruction from modern agricultural practices and increases in tourism. As the Union pushes for the deepening of the integration process, including completing the internal market, the pressures on the periphery's environment are increasing. Furthermore, the efforts of the periphery to catch-up economically with the developed core can often heighten the tension between economic considerations on the one hand and the need for environmental protection on the other. The studies in this book examine the ambivalent responses to EU environmental policy among policy-makers and environmentalists in the periphery. Both the willingness as well as the capacity of the periphery to protect its environmental heritage are explored. In particular, the administrative capacity, institutional arrangements, political culture as well as economic development needs are taken into account in an examination of the nature of the periphery's response to and implementation of Union environmental policy. The book will appeal to policy-makers and academics in the countries of the European periphery and to analysts of European policy-making everywhere, especially those concerned with environmental policy and politics.

- Abstract
During much of the 1980s, US wage growth has been unexpectedly slow in the face of relatively low unemployment rates and high capacity utilization rates. This collection of papers resulting from the Wage Structure Conference held by the Federal Research Bank of Cleveland, November 1989, helps explain labour market behaviour in that period. The contributors - academic and research economists in labour economics - provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the wage-setting process in the US labour market.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I analyze the relation between daily bitcoin returns and sentiment, using a dataset reaching from 2013 to 2018. I find that daily bitcoin returns are not only affected contemporaneous by the bitcoin-sentiment measures, but also in the next three days - while established stock-market sentiment measures provide no explanatory power. Additionally, the negative emotions show return-reversal patterns as often observed in sentiment-induced mispricing literature, resulting in higher returns the next two days, after affecting returns negatively today. I further find that trading volume affects re-turns positively today, in the next four days, and that it is connected with stock-market measures. For what I wisdom, this is also the first academic research that uses the recently introduced Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices on cryptocurrencies.

- Abstract
As organizational scholars, we are accustomed to using theoretical lenses to understand organizational practices and outcomes. That is, we conceptualize what people do, feel and think in their everyday organizational interactions through the use of theoretical language and models to uncover individual and/or social antecedents and outcomes. We tend to ignore, however, how our own day-to-day work as scholars - doing research - is subjected to the same pressures, affected by similar factors, and should be accounted for through similar modes of analyses. We treat our studies and theories as solid anchor points and as objective truths rather than as constructions embedded within individual, organizational, field and societal contexts. This volume is a must read for all researchers interested in understanding our own craft. Building on established traditions in the sociology of knowledge, we direct a reflective and critical gaze towards the structures, practices and meaning systems that ground and shape how we produce and consume managerial knowledge and organization theory. The volume includes both empirically-based papers and reflective essays that explore theoretical concepts and analytical reasoning to explain, critique and advance the ways in which we write about, produce, and consume theory.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Review of Business Studies, grade: 1,0, Otto Beisheim School of Management Vallendar, language: English, abstract: Long-term effects and transformations due to further increasing greenhouse gas emissions will trigger irreversible and severe consequences for humans, their habitat and the nature. Governments will fail to reach the agreed emission reduction goals with their current measures and are consequently dependent on private sector involvement. This study aims to provide a detailed overview of new business models that reduce the CO2 footprint in heavy-emissions sectors: Power Purchase Agreements, Energy Performance Contracting and Energy-as-a-Service. Various papers, market analysis and companies from multiple industries have been examined. Furthermore, a calculation of the future emissions savings potential for the German and global market is presented for each business model. The findings demonstrate that each analyzed business model is suitable for companies from multiple sectors with particular characteristics. All instruments are providing improved carbon footprints, while the Energy-as-a-Service approach is predicted to reach the most extensive long-term impact. Based on these results, it is highly recommendable for suitable companies to apply at least one of the presented models to achieve emissions savings. For interested corporations, this thesis can serve as a starting point to critically analyze the suitability of the respective business solutions while understanding their future trends and development potentials.

- Abstract
What do seat belts, life jackets and anti-jack knife technology have in common? They were all the subjects of campaigns run by the British Safety Council since its inception in 1957. James Tye, its charismatic founder and leader for nearly 40 years, created the British Safety Council to bring about a transformation in how Great Britain viewed safety and health. In 1957, hundreds, if not thousands, of workers were killed in accidents and James marshalled every conceivable technique to save lives, including PR stunts, training, lobbying for better laws and, crucially, what he called ‘propaganda', in the form of posters and other communication tools. In 2014, a long-lost collection of posters, papers and letters were found gathering dust in a warehouse. The British Safety Council, wanting to mark its 60-year history and its role in reducing deaths at work, decided to preserve the collection and commissioned historian Mike Esbester to trace the history of health and safety in Britain from the late 1960s through the posters and photographs of the time. Transformative Propaganda: Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council offers a fascinating and vivid insight into the social and political realities of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s through a wealth of historical documents, press cuttings, correspondence, photographs and posters. It offers a truly extraordinary window onto the evolution of health and safety within the UK and richly deserves a place on the bookshelf of every safety professional.

- Abstract
There's no question, compared to the advanced economies China's economic growth rates have been spectacular, but in most instances the economic analysts tend to forget that a large part of China's growth has been dictated by government industrial subsidies. How did China go from a bit player overnight to the largest exporter in the world in capital-intensive industries? This book shows that government subsidies play a big part in China's success. Government subsidies include those to basic industries: energy (coal, electricity, natural gas and heavy oil), steel, glass, paper, auto parts, solar and more. A lot has been written about China's trade practices with the West, but none of this work addresses the real unsustainable dilemma. Much of the current literature discusses the problems but doesn't explain the root cause of China's lopsided trade practices with the West or explain in detail how China finances its government subsidies, with nothing written that explains that China's subsidized exports to the United States and European Union are basically self-funded by its enormous trade surplus with the West. A trade surplus represents a net inflow of domestic currency from foreign markets and is the opposite of a trade deficit, which would represent a net outflow. Moreover, this is the only book that describes China's current trade practices with the West as a zero sum game at the expense of the West. This book provides two solutions to this endless quagmire: an increase in Western exports to China so that China and the West have more of an equal trade balance, or a very steep reduction of China's exports to the West.

- Abstract
In this timely volume emanating from the National Bureau of Economic Research's program in international economics, leading economists address recent developments in three important areas. The first section of the book focuses on international comparisons of output and prices, and includes papers that present new measures of product market integration, new methodology to infer relative factor price changes from quantitative data, and an ongoing capital stock measurement project. The next section features articles on international trade, including such significant issues as deterring child labor exploitation in developing countries, exchange rate regimes, and mapping U. S. comparative advantage across various factors. The book concludes with research on multinational corporations and includes a discussion of the long-debated issue of whether growth of production abroad substitutes for or is complementary to production growth at home. The papers in the volume are dedicated to Robert E. Lipsey, who for more than a half century at the NBER, contributed significantly to the broad field of empirical international economics.

- Abstract
Good morning! The alarm clock rings, and it's time to get up – brush your teeth, shower, eat breakfast, read the paper and head to work. Day in, day out. Most of us begin our day with this type of routine. Often we are not aware of the advantages of having a routine – what is even more questionable is the notion that we often have a morning routine, but no evening routine. Routine = negative. Wrong! All too often the word routine'has a negative connotation. Many people feel trapped in the boredom of the daily grind and often take routine as something negative. In contrast, routines help us to better organise our thoughts and plan our day. So why not expand the morning routine to the evening routine? Good evening! Taking a little trip into the past or having a look into a modern day children's room tells us that an evening routine should not be missing from our daily lives. This guide offers you some handy do's and don'ts to plan or improve your evening routine.

The authors desire to express their very, sincere thanks to Mr. F. B. Gilbreth for permission to use four of his photographs as illustrations, and to Mr. J. F. Butterworth, Mr. Gilbreth's general representative in England, for considerable assistance and helpful criticism. They are also glad to record their gratitude to Mr. H. W. Allingham, M. I. M. A Bibliography of books and magazine articles, up to 1914, will be found in C. Bertrand Thompson's collection of papers published under the title of'Scientific Management.'This collection includes many original documents otherwise difficult to obtain, and forms an excellent historical sketch of the subject, considered as a movement. - Abstract
Alena Ledeneva invites you on a voyage of discovery to explore society's open secrets, unwritten rules and know-how practices. Broadly defined as ‘ways of getting things done', these invisible yet powerful informal practices tend to escape articulation in official discourse. They include emotion-driven exchanges of gifts or favours and tributes for services, interest-driven know-how (from informal welfare to informal employment and entrepreneurship), identity-driven practices of solidarity, and power-driven forms of co-optation and control. The paradox, or not, of the invisibility of these informal practices is their ubiquity. Expertly practised by insiders but often hidden from outsiders, informal practices are, as this book shows, deeply rooted all over the world, yet underestimated in policy. Entries from the five continents presented in this volume are samples of the truly global and ever-growing collection, made possible by a remarkable collaboration of over 200 scholars across disciplines and area studies. By mapping the grey zones, blurred boundaries, types of ambivalence and contexts of complexity, this book creates the first Global Map of Informality. The accompanying database (www.in-formality.com) is searchable by region, keyword or type of practice, so do explore what works, how, where and why!Praise for The Global Encyclopaedia of Informality'The chapter introductions, like many of the entries, subsume a huge quantity of analytical and theoretical reflections of enormous depth.... If there were door-to-door encyclopedias sellers, this would be a bestseller.'Periferia'This unique work collaborates with more than two hundred scholars across the globe, illustrating how informal practices are deeply embedded across the planet, playing a crucial role in truly “getting anything done” while still remaining underestimated in policy-making procedures and business life. The book puts international human behavior into perspective, and is wholly mesmerizing.'Philly Biz Leaders'Must-Read Books of 2018, Philadelphia Magazine‘The Global Informality Project unveils new ways of understanding how the state functions and ways in which civil servants and citizens adapt themselves to different local contexts by highlighting the diversity of the relationships between state and society. The project is of great interest to policymakers who want to imagine solutions that are benefi cial for all, but sufficiently pragmatic to ensure a seamless implementation, particularly in the field of cross-border trade in developing countries.'Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation, Brussels‘An extremely interesting and stimulating collection of papers. Ledeneva's challenging ideas, first applied in the context of Russia's economy of shortage, came to full blossom and are here contextualized by practices from other countries and contemporary systems. Many original and relevant practices were recognized empirically in socialist countries, but this book shows their generality.'János Kornai, Allie S. Freed Professor of Economics Emeritus at Harvard and Professor Emeritus at Corvinus University of Budapest‘Alena Ledeneva's Global Encyclopedia of Informality is a unique contribution, providing a global atlas of informal practices through the contributions of over 200 scholars across the world. It is far more rewarding for the reader to discover how commonalities of informal behavior become apparent through this rich texture like a complex and hidden pattern behind local colors than to presume top down universal benchmarks of good versus bad behavior. This book is a plea against reductionist approaches of mathematics in social science in general, and corruption studies in particular and makes a great read,

- Abstract
Revenues from commodities are extremely important for Latin America and the Caribbean, yet there is very little literature on the structure of these industries and on the various ways in which the state obtains commodity revenues. This book aims to understand the trade-off between the degree of taxation overall, the profitability of the relevant industry and the amount of investment and subsequent production in the region, as well as the relevance of institutions in the performance of the sector. This volume focuses on economic efficiency: where Latin America stands in terms of the current tax system for the extractive sector; how policies have changed in this regard; and how policies may be improved. The Economics of Natural Resources in Latin America is timely, since this new era of lower and volatile prices and possible reconfiguration of investment flows poses a challenge to natural resource tax systems in the world. The argument of the book will be made by a collection of papers around the issue of tax efficiency in the region and concludes with chapters on institutions and the role of transparency. This book shows that there are varieties of experiences in resource taxation and management of revenues in Latin America that could be used to shape policy interventions in other regions. This variety is not only related to their diverse impact on welfare, but also on the policy challenges faced by the countries in the region. This volume is well suited for those who study and find interest in development economics, political economy and public finance, as well as policy

- Abstract
This title was first published in 2000: The study of corporate governance is a relatively modern development, with significant attention devoted to the subject only during the last fifty years. The topics covered in this volume include the purpose of the corporation, the board of directors, the role of shareholders, and more contemporary developments like hedge fund activism, the role of sovereign wealth funds, and the development of corporate governance law in what perhaps will become the dominant world economy over the next century, China. The editor has written an introductory essay which briefly describes the intellectual history of the field and analyses the material selected for the volume. The papers which have been selected present what the editor believes to be some of the best and most representative studies of the subjects covered. As a result the volume offers a rounded view of the contemporary state of the some of the dominant issues in corporate governance.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Dresden, language: English, abstract: ISO 19600 is an international standard issued by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) that aims at supporting organizations worldwide in introducing good compliance measures and maintain integrity. The standard was published in December 2014 and has received both praise and criticism, but no in-depth analysis of its effectiveness. This paper is set out to further analyze the approach offered by ISO 19600 towards compliance. It is supposed to assist cooperations in their decision whether or not to use ISO 19600 as their sole or main resource in implementing good compliance measures within their organization. The research question of this thesis could thus be stated as follows: How effective are the measures suggested by ISO 19600 in ensuring good compliance in a cooperation? The term „effectiveness” is defined by the Oxford dictionary as'[t]he degree to which something is successful in producing a desired result'. Therefore, this thesis is going to analyze the degree to which ISO 19600 is successful in producing the desired result of preventing compliance violations in cooperations. The research is based on findings of studies on compliance as well as the suggestions in popular literature on the topic and opinions voiced by various economists and organizations upon the release of ISO 19600 itself. By comparing those with the suggestions made in ISO 19600 it is possible to assess the standard's potential effectiveness when it is utilized by a cooperation. Note that ISO 19600 is aimed at all kinds of organizations including non-profit organizations and governmental institutions. The focus of this thesis lies on private, profit-driven enterprises, but most of the thesis'findings apply to other types of organizations as well.

- Abstract
Originally published in 1970. Input-output analysis has been described as the'lynch-pin of modern economic planning'. Its purpose is to trace the consequences of any economic change through each sector of the economy; to measure, for example, the effects of an increase in fuel tax on the price of food, or of an expansion in car production on the country's import bill. This kind of knowledge is clearly essential for making economic predictions. This book presents the proceedings of the 1968 Manchester Conference including six outline papers, each followed by discussion, and several summaries of ongoing and proposed research which were added afterwards. The speakers and participants constituted a representative sample of persons from Industry and Commerce, as well as the Universities and the Civil Service.
