In January 1976, Raymond Barre, the first President of The Geneva Association, and Orio Giarini, its first Secretary General, founded The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance with the main goal of supporting and encouraging research in the economics of risk and insurance. At that time, research in the field of insurance was still embryonic and insurance was regarded as peripheral social activity. When sustained economic growth gained traction, the function of insurance gradually emerged as a key contributor to economic development. By integrating uncertainty into economic theory and benefiting from the progress of both financial economics and decision theory, research developed further in the field of insurance economics and risk management, and is now prolific. The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance undeniably contributed to this evolution and its impact on research in insurance has largely exceeded what its two founding members could have expected. Samuel Gompers (1850–1924) devoted his life to improving the conditions of American workers through better wages, shorter workdays, and safer workplaces, achieved through common effort, democratic organization, and practical action. Concerns the decision of International Paper, the world's largest pulp and paper corporation, about when to adopt the provisions of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards 106 (SFAS 106),'Employers'Accounting for Postretirement Benefits Other than Pensions.'SFAS 106 requires the accrual of a significant balance sheet liability to recognize the future cost of promises made to employees to pay for benefits during retirement, most importantly for health insurance benefits. Compared to the prevailing'pay-as-you-go'accounting, the provisions of SFAS 106 typically require a higher annual expense for'other postemployment benefits'(OPEB). Set in late November 1992, a year after the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) announced the final form of SFAS 106. Application of the new rules was required for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 1992, but as usual earlier adoption was encouraged. In addition, on adoption of the new standard companies were given the option of either recognizing the liability for accrued benefits immediately, or gradually over a period of up to twenty years. Thus, IP was faced with decisions both of when and how to adopt SFAS 106.

Dunque, far riferimento alla metamorfosi significa alludere a ciò che, della natura, ci mostra costantemente l'insostenibilità di qualsivoglia pensiero dell'immutabile, dell'eterno e del permanente. Comprendere che invece le cose sono sempre nuove, ossia che indicano sempre diverse possibili significazioni, vuol dire capire che alla base delle cose naturali v'è la «fantasia», e non l'astratta razionalità fatta propria da un certo tipo di scientificità. Buona parte dei disastri ecologici che rendono sempre più fragile il nostro pianeta, e sempre più a rischio la nostra permanenza sulla sua superficie, sono stati prodotti da una forma di pensiero lineare, produttivistico e fondato sul mito della «crescita». Su un'idea rigida di razionalità che, delle cose del mondo, ha visto solo l'essenziale sfruttabilità, utile a rendere sempre più potente il dominio dell'essere umano. Ma la natura ci insegna che in principio era il due, e non l'uno. Che tutto funge da risultato di un'originaria ibridazione; e che è folle credere che le cose siano «pure», univocamente significanti, e soprattutto che talune cose siano buone e altre cattive, alcune belle e altre brutte. Ed è così che possiamo tornare a riflettere sul fatto che la carta nasce in virtù di un'operazione di riciclo; e che solo in virtù di tale operazione può rivendicare una fortissima valenza simbolica. Ogni unità naturale è infatti in se stessa molteplice. Anche la cellulosa è una complexio; è un polimero, un aggregato. Solo se comprendiamo la strutturale complessità di ogni forma d'esistenza, possiamo capire in che senso ogni fenomeno naturale parli di una complessità strutturale che deve renderci particolarmente attenti a intervenire rompendo relazioni, e ferendo l'unità che tutto tiene insieme. Solo comprendendo questa verità, possiamo capire che in natura tutto è ibrido, complesso, e dunque correlato a ogni altra cosa; che nulla può vivere isolato, illudendosi di potersi confinare in una zona protetta e dunque non costretta a lasciarsi contaminare dall'altro, dal diverso, da quello che, in realtà, più propriamente ci riguarda.

From May 20 to May 24, 1986 a conference on distributive justice and in­ equality was held at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin (Wis­ senschaftskolleg zu Berlin). More than thirty scholars participated in this conference. The topics of the presentations ranged from ethics, welfare economics and social choice theory to characterizations of inequality meas­ ures and redistributive taxation schemes. This book contains a selection of the papers given at the conference. This collection of articles also appeared as issues 2 and 3 of volume 5 of Social Choice and Welfare. In the first paper P. Suppes argues for a pluralistic concept of equity. For too long the emphasis has been on income distribution but there are other characteristics which are important when one talks about equity. Suppes suggests that it would be desirable to have Lorenz curves for a variety of fea­ tures of societies, such as education, health and housing. P. Dasgupta studies the quality of lives in terms of an index of living stand­ ards. One has to distinguish between'same number choices'(the number of lives is given) and'different numbers choices'(problem of optimum popUlation). The author argues that in the latter case the anonymity (or sym­ metry) axiom cannot be readily defended. Once it is dropped, however, an incoherence in the moral ordering of possible worlds arises. The moral basis for different numbers choices becomes generation-dependent, an overall moral ordering of possible worlds no longer exists.
