The Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership invited papers related to responsible leadership from a trans-disciplinary perspective involving the social and natural sciences. Subsequent to a lengthy review process, fifteen authors were invited to present at the the 3rd International Conference on Responsible Leadership; from these, five papers were finally selected to appear in this Special Edition.Management, leadership, and business knowledge by itself cannot ensure a sustainable and equitable future. What is needed is an integration of knowledge about responsible leadership across disciplinary boundaries, ranging from management studies and the physical sciences, to law, the humanities and social science. Only by integrating across current disciplinary boundaries can we find hope for generating what has been termed “earth system governance”, a way for humanity to manage the complexities of the world to create a just, equitable, and sustainable world for all.The five papers included in this special edition provide insight into responsible leadership and the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue in an interconnected and complex world. The perspectives converge to give us focused insights on responsible leadership as an emerging discourse, confirming the importance of bridging science, business and politics, and the role that responsible leadership plays in this.

Subversion, Power and Hierarchy in Organisations and Society: Carnivalesque Leadership explores a leadership strategy that dates back centuries but has become so normalised that it can be invisible as a strategy. Climate change is one of the most significant and challenging problems we face today, and many organisations have recognised their responsibility in reducing emissions and environmental degradation and regenerating biodiversity. However, conventional leadership has failed to respond adequately to the magnitude of the threat, and a profound change in corporate leadership is required to substantively cut emissions and change climate policy to minimise further destructive environmental impact. History is full of examples of how the skilful use of language is a fundamental aspect of charismatic leadership. Traditionally, this phenomenon has been studied focusing on oratory skills. The book argues that the relationship between a leader and a follower has points of similarity to that which exists between a writer and a reader, and that in each case, former party is the agenda setter, but satisfactory outcomes require a mutual endeavor. Given that scholarly writing about management and organizations is inevitably a mix of the presentation of empirical truths and value judgements, the ability to engage the reader intellectually and emotionally is critical in the successful dissemination of disciplinary knowledge and belief claims. The book proposes a multi-faceted construct of textual charisma which is created through the use of metaphors, stories and personal accounts as well as the ancient construct of pistis and the contemporary notion of metadiscourse. The concept of relational capital mainly refers to the value of the relationships a company creates with its stakeholders. These relationships inspired the authors to analyze their importance in the context of creating value for the enterprise and to explore the importance of leadership and communication in building relationships with the environment. Internal relational capital refers to the organization's set of intellectual property, work processes and methods, executive procedures, databases, communication and information infrastructure. Employee relations and leadership activities become pivotal in this context, as improving relational competence and intra-organizational relational capital can foster building lasting relationships with external stakeholders. This book focuses on the patient experience as a leadership strategy. It explores the relationships between coordinated care, expert leadership, provider-patient communications, and the patient experience. When clinical and nonclinical staff collaborate effectively, healthcare teams can improve patient outcomes, prevent medical errors, improve efficiency, and increase patient satisfaction. Surprisingly, however, healthcare leaders tend to prioritize specific metrics to improve hospital performance and patient satisfaction even though patient experience and provider-patient communications are intertwined. Determining the most effective strategy for achieving higher levels of service quality and patient satisfaction can prove elusive for providers. Consider the evidence: a survey in 2012 of more than 17,000 healthcare leaders in North America, for example, found that leaders'perceptions did not always match the data, and many hospital leaders overestimated the performance of their hospitals. Over 75% of the hospital leaders reported'quality of care'was something their hospital did well, while their patients, on average, rated them lower on perceived service quality. Ten years later, in 2022, only a few providers integrated best practices to achieve high patient satisfaction which severely impacted CMS Hospital Star Rating. This has significant effects on profit margins since patients consider the star rating differentials in their choices of hospitals and are willing to pay upward of 17% extra for treatments in 5-star hospitals, a revenue generating source of income at times when hospitals have seen falling revenues (down 4.8%) and rising labor (up 37%) from pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. To reduce the gap between perception and reality, hospital leaders can consider the link between communication goals (e.g., responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, communication about medicines) and outcomes (e.g., increased adherence and compliance, readmission, healthcare delivery costs, hospital overall ratings) as well as improve the patient experience. When intentions and outcomes are aligned, they create a powerful medium by which healthcare leaders can evaluate the gaps that exist between patient care measures and best practices and mitigate organizational or technological factors relevant to improving the patient experience. When the alignment is optimal, care teams develop a better sense of shared purpose, become more committed and accountable, and work together to improve the patient experience. When accomplished, patients participate more fully and actively in the exchange and are discharged with an enhanced commitment to carry out care management requirements.
