Papers in Economics and Sociology is a compilation of materials authored by the Polish economist Oskar Lange. The coverage of the essays covers the interrelations between economic and social issues. The text first covers the Marxist and socialist theory, and then proceeds to tackling political economy and socialism. Next, the selection deals with economic theory, along with the mathematical models, econometrics, and statistics utilized in economic analysis. The text also covers the economic science in the service of practice. The book will be of great use to political scientists, sociologists, behavioral scientists, and economists.

This volume, originally published in 1958, contains a selection of the most important and interesting articles by Knut Wicksell, which had hitherto only been published in Swedish. They cover Wicksell's views on Economics and monetary theory, his theory of production and distribution, some review articles on the works of Pareto, Böhm-Bawerk, Carl Menger and Bowley and some papers on foreign trade problems, written after the First World War. Erik Lindahl's introductory essay gives a picture of Wicksell the social reformer, who radical opinions often brought him into conflict with the authorities and the general public.

Part III contains essays on a variety of topics, among them inflation, financial risk, legal institutions, and unemployment. This section includes'The Keynesian Gospel According to Modigliani,'which revisits the topic of the general theory of employment, interest, and money and its implications for mass unemployment sixty years after his first ground-breaking paper on the topic. Many of the articles in volume 6 are the product of collaboration; coauthors include Richard Brumberg, Albert Ando, Shi Larry Cao, Jean Paul Fitoussi, Tullio Jappelli, Beniamino Moro, Denis Snower, Robert Solow, Alfred Steinherr, Paolo Sylos Labinia, and Modigliani's granddaughter Leah Modigliani. The volume concludes with an interview of Modigliani by William A. Barnett and Robert Solow from 2000.

This volume collects published papers and essays from widely scattered and inaccessible sources, some of which appeared for the first time when this book was originally published. In the first part of the book the subjects range from the theory of wages and recent trends in economic theory to economists'criticism of capitalism and socialism, investment-policy in under-developed countries, and economic growth under the Soviet Five Year Plans. The second part includes papers on Lenin and Marx, a study of the economic ideas of Bernard Shaw, and an essay on historical materialism.

This compilation begins by discussing the connection between perceived employability and job insecurity on psychological health and job-related outcome variables. A study testing this correlation is presented, with results suggesting that perceived employability and job insecurity facilitates the effects of self-efficacy on psychological health, job satisfaction, and dedication. Additionally, research on productivity growth in 55 major Australian urban water utilities over a four-year period is described. In this study, productivity growth was broken-down into technical efficiency and technological change by way of Malmquist indices. Later, price dynamics are investigated to determine market integration, market efficiency and spatial arbitrage. Based on empirical investigations, several policy implications are derived in terms of efficacy and effectiveness of policy measures, or interventions on trade policies. The authors provide a review of federal-level regulation of the U.S. interstate natural gas pipeline industry, placing modern rules and regulations into their appropriate historical context by reviewing the evolution of gas pipeline regulation over the course of the 20th Century. The authors also examine the question of the creation of global government and global currency, especially analyzing the current unstable financial system and the threat of war resulting from unstable intergovernmental relationships. The use of global currency is imagined under the surveillance of a Global Central Bank, which would consist of representatives of national governments with voting rights determined by the share of national GNP in total gross product in the community of participating nations. A paper exploring restaurant bankruptcy in the U.S. between 1980 and 2014 is included, with the goal of developing a bankruptcy prediction model and explaining that restaurateurs should be more cautious in selecting their operation types to aid in financial stability. The active relationship between economic growth, inflation, stock market development, and globalization is studied using the panel VAR methodology, with the objective of determining the behavior of certain variables and observing how these elements interact with one another. Another paper studies whether or not the financial market of China is integrated with the financial market of the U.S., with its data converted into cumulative partial sums by using a software component created by the authors in Octave language. By estimating the asymmetric generalized impulse response functions, the authors suggest that these financial markets are linked interactively when the markets are falling. A final paper is presented investigating the nature of dependence between stock prices and exchange rate in Nigeria from January of 2000 to December of 2015. Overall, the evidence indicates the dominance of the portfolio balance effect, with stock prices leading the exchange rate. This leads the authors to determine that stabilizing the stock market is imperative for exchange rate management to minimize the transmission of systemic risk and contagion between both markets.

Bertram Schefold is recognized internationally as an outstanding economist. He has made major contributions to the development of economic theory and particularly to economic thought. The series'International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics'publishes quality proceedings of conferences and symposia. Since all articles published in these volumes are refereed relative to the standards of the best journals, not all papers presented at the symposia are published in these proceedings volumes. Occasionally these volumes include articles that were not presented at a symposium or conference, but are of high quality and are relevant to the focus of the volume. The topics chosen for these volumes are those of particular research importance at the time of the selection of the topic. Most of the chapters in this volume were delivered as papers in two sessions that William Barnett organized at a conference held in Vigo (Spain) in July 2005, sponsored by the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory. This book explores the under-researched sources of the consumerist culture and the environmental damage it has brought about. 'Structural Models of Wage and Employment Dynamics'contains selected papers from a conference held in honour of Professor Dale T. Mortensen upon the occasion of his 65th birthday. The papers are on some of Professor Dale T. This compilation explores the unique form of Dutch government taken at the time, and its relationship with trade policy successes of the most prosperous semi-gubernatorial body of the early modern period – the Dutch East India Company (VOC). By examining the unique form of government taken by the Dutch Republic, the authors work out the nature of the relationship between the Dutch polity and the VOC, attempting to discern the link between the successes of the company and government policies. Afterwards, the authors analyse the main contributions of scientific literature so as to demonstrate that tourism, although having certain limitations as an instrument of economic development in some countries, may be an interesting tool for the improvement of a population's living conditions under specific circumstances. This book compiles the world's main tourist destinations according to the growth of the economic performance of the tourist activity and of the tourist and economic development experienced during the last decade. With this objective, the authors combine information from a set of tourist and economic indicators for the main 45 tourist destinations over the period between 2000 and 2010. Destinations are ranked with respect to their average growth rate over the sample period. A paper is included which focuses on competitiveness research and examines the nature of tourism to provide a rationale for a Tourism Destination Competitiveness (TDC) model specific to tourism by evaluating the literature on the meaning of competitiveness and different perspectives of the concept. Milton Friedman was one of the most influential economists of all time – and his ideas had a huge impact on the economic policies of governments across the world. A key theorist of capitalism and its relationship to democratic freedoms, Friedman remains one of the most cited authorities in both academic economics and government economic policy. What is the worth of the social economy? What worth does the social economy produce? Co-operatives, not-for-profit and mutual benefits organizations as well as foundations share common values that colour the way they perform and how they manage to do so. Yet, little is known about how the social economy is actually being evaluated, and how evaluation may reinforce or weaken this specificity. This book fills a gap in the literature about the social economy. It seeks to make a critical assessment of the interests to which the social economy of today must cater and for which questions of evaluation appear to be the most telling.
