William Elliot Griffis (1843 – 1928) graduated from Rutgers College in 1869 and taught four years in Fukui and Tokyo. After his return to the United States, he devoted himself to his research and writing on East Asia throughout his life. He authored 20 books about Japan and five books about Korea including, Corea: The Hermit Nation (1882), Corea, Without and Within: Chapters on Corean History, Manners and Religion (1885), The Unmannerly Tiger, and Other Korean Tales (1911), A Modern Pioneer in Korea: The Life Story of Henry G. Appenzeller (1912), and Korean Fairy Tales (1922). In particular, his bestseller, Corea: The Hermit Nation (1882) was reprinted numerous times through nine editions over thirty years. He was not only known as'the foremost interpreter of Japan to the West before World War I but also the American expert on Korea. After his death, his collection of books, documents, photographs and ephemera was donated to Rutgers. The Korean materials in the Griffis Collection at Rutgers University consist of journals, correspondence, articles, maps, prints, photos, postcards, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and ephemera. These papers reflect Griffis's interests and activities in relation to Korea as a historian, scholar, and theologian. They provide a rare window into the turbulent period of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century Korea, witnessed and evaluated by Griffis and early American missionaries in East Asia. Born and raised in Southern California, David R. Jackson embraced an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. When he was 12, he began his first paying job as a paperboy for the Anaheim Bulletin and throughout his teens, he worked at several jobs, including as a janitor for Fairmont Schools, a gas station attendant, and an aircraft refueler. He earned his private pilot license at 16, but not before his first solo flight that turned into a rather harrowing experience. Upon graduating from high school, David's adventuresome nature took over and he embarked on his dream of traveling the Americas to ski. With two friends, he traveled down the Pan-American Highway to Chile, across the Andes to Argentina, and then to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before heading back to California. This trip ignited his passion for travel, and he vowed to tour the world and ski in as many countries as possible.Returning from this adventure to South America, David attended college at Brigham Young University and skied on the race team for one year before being asked at age 20 to temporarily manage a ski lodge in Park City, Utah for the summer. This turned out to become a full-time position during which he was also made Vice President of the Park City Hotel Association while attending BYU part time. He left Park City 3 ½ years later and spent a year driving through Europe, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, and Scandinavia to ski and see the world.Upon returning from his travels, David started a successful aircraft cleaning business and an RV rental company before taking over the presidency of the National Environmental Distribution Company. After selling his businesses a decade later, he became the Business Manager of Fairmont Schools and was soon promoted to Director.A man of tremendous vision, David dove into his position at Fairmont, starting new classes and then acquiring and building new campuses. He later expanded Fairmont's reach by creating the Fairmont International Academy. Dedicated to serving the educational community, he served with the Boy Scouts of America, the Orange County Department of Education Committee for George H.W. Bush's America 2000 and served as President of the California Association of Nationally Recognized Schools. He was instrumental in creating the Orange County Private School Association, and the National Independent Private School Association, serving as President for years in both.A man of faith, David served the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) in almost every leadership position over a period of five decades. Perceptions of students are frozen in the 1980s – they're either idle, undernourished wimps à la Neil from the BBC sitcom The Young Ones or like his housemates Rick (naïvely militant blowhard) or Vyvyan (shouty, intoxicated hooligan). Many of the students I teach are well-behaved, eat healthily and aren't uniformly obsessed with getting smashed. Some of them even vote Conservative. But an even more disturbing development that few in the'80s could have predicted is the epidemic of mental illness among students – and staff. Readers may be surprised to find out that legions of lecturers are overworked and underpaid, and on casual contracts. As you will also see, academic standards are slowly being obliterated, though that has more to do with financing than with a slide into'wokery.'The conversion of students into customers we can't afford to upset has resulted in an upsurge in grades, non-attendance, abusive behaviour and plagiarism. Hardly anyone ever fails no matter how badly they perform. Not to be left out, lecturers can plagiarise, too – usually each other's lecture notes and research ideas.

The great autobiographies—those by Benvenuto Cellini, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, and Henry Brooks Adams—were justified by their authors living in interesting times, harboring radically new ideas, or participating in great events. Joseph Epstein qualifies on none of these counts. His life has been quiet, lucky in numerous ways, and far from dramatic. But it has also been emblematic of the great changes in our country since World War II. He grew up in a petit-bourgeois, Midwestern milieu, and the city of Chicago looms large in his life. A born antiauthoritarian, filled with an untamable rage, Fernandez rails against the system and aggressively chooses the path of most resistance. This leads to long spates of living in his car, strung out on drugs, and robbing the whiteboys coming home from the clubs at night. Fernandez eventually realizes that his rage needs an outlet and finds relief for his existential dread in the form of running. And fighting Nazis. Fernandez cobbles together a life for himself as a writing professor, a facilitator of a self-defense collective, a boots-on-the-ground participant in Antifa work, and a proud father of two children he unapologetically raises to question authority. But his parents and academia seem to think Fernandez is failing miserably, putting his children and his students at risk, and they treat Fernandez like he's a time bomb, ready to explode at any moment. They may have a point.

Starting in the early 1900s, male and female elementary schoolteachers in Italy gained increasing awareness of the role of social workers in the fight against illiteracy and in creating civic consciousness based on widespread, qualified education. In 1900, the Unione Magistrale (the Teachers Association) was founded; in 1919, the Sindacato Magistrale (the Italian Teachers Union, a member of the General Confederation of Labor) was created.Inevitably, some of these teachers, firmly convinced of their duty, opposed fascism which, from the moment it originated, aimed at creating obedient boys who were loyal to fascist doctrine and trained in warfare, and girls ready to become the mothers and wives of soldiers. These teachers resisted in the most diverse ways. Some were forced to abandon teaching, a number of them were killed by fascist violence, but others were able to navigate the restrictions imposed on them by the regime.In Teaching Freedom, the author reconstructs twelve biographies of these teachers, based on unpublished material and archive documents, in a form of research suspended between history and pedagogy. The chronological order of the stories retraces the way fascism progressively seized power, suffocating all forms of freedom of expression. Moreover, the study of newly-found documents and various testimonies show the teachers'ceaseless invention of alternative teaching strategies.

However, relatively little is known about his life, his successes and failures, and his personal relationships. Based on many untranslated and unknown letters, this new biography presents Froebel as a brilliant but also flawed man. Beginning with his childhood and the early death of his mother, as well as his difficult relationship with his father and stepmother, we see the early seeds of Froebel's interest in children and the training of early childhood practitioners. While Froebel lacked basic academic knowledge due to his poor early education, he was able to overcome these deficits and found an educational institute, and develop ground-breaking educational theories about play and pedagogy. He authored multiple books, including his most famous work The Education of Man. The focus of this book, though, is not on Froebel's educational theories but on his complicated relationships with his family, the Keilhau community, and the mother of one of his pupils, Caroline von Holzhausen, whom he called the “rune of his life”. After many personal and professional disappointments, Froebel finally came up with the idea that made him famous until today: kindergarten. In the last decade of his life, he became a salesman of this new idea and worked tirelessly for the establishment of the kindergarten movement. However, when the Prussian government banned kindergarten shortly before his death, Froebel was broken – even if kindergarten lives until today.

Memoirs of a Black Philosopher is a chronicle of the life and times of Richard A. Jones.In these memoirs, Jones relates the dislocations and disillusionments of Black people in the great migration of Southern Blacks to Northern cities. He recalls the educational trauma brought on by Brown v Board, and his education in the inner-city public schools of Washington DC and Detroit Michigan. Beginning his higher education in the HCBUs at Fisk and Howard Universities, after serving in the US Air Force, Jones begins his educational diaspora in Midwestern universities. His struggles to attain an education culminates in a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Minot State University in 1970. After working as a federal Head Start director, Marketing representative at IBM, and college Minority Affairs Director, Jones begins a new career as a high school mathematics teacher. Never satisfied with his “education,” he begins a new direction in academic philosophy. After completing an MA in philosophy at the University of Denver, he enrolls in a PhD program at the University of Colorado at the age of forty-nine. After completing the degree, Jones teaches philosophy at Kansas State University, followed by returning to Howard University, where he finished his teaching career. At Howard, Jones realizes that “philosophy is more” than teaching and writing. He becomes the Co-coordinator of the Radical Philosophy Association (RPA). His political activity with RPA culminates in conferences in Cuba and South Africa, where he sees the people's struggles with global capitalism. Jones left Howard in 2013 and continues his “philosophical praxes” in contemplation and writing. His story is one of the unending struggles for human dignity.

Between 1925 and 1940, Rae worked for eleven newspapers in six states, including the Akron Beacon Journal and Cleveland Press in Ohio and the Buffalo Times in New York. The culmination of his newspaper career was his role at the revolutionary and historic PM newspaper in New York City. At PM, Rae rubbed elbows with some of the greatest journalists and writers of his generation, including Dorothy Parker, Ernest Hemingway, Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Max Lerner, I. F. “Izzy” Stone, Dashiell Hammett, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Edna Ferber. Rae's reputation ran ahead of him to Florida, where the state's newspapers were agitating for upgrading journalism education at UF. Rae might not have had the degrees that other candidates had, but he had the credentials—he was a seasoned newspaperman, a trained newspaper technician, and his years at PM had honed his teaching instinct. UF President J. Hillis Miller agreed to hire Rae, and so would begin the legend of the degreeless dean. Rae re-envisioned journalism at the University of Florida. With his leadership, what had been a three-person department that rarely exceeded twenty students grew into the School of Journalism. He expanded the school to include advertising and radio and television journalism in the curriculum, and by the 1960s UF's School of Journalism was the fastest growing journalism program in the country. In 1968, shortly after Rae retired, the School became the College of Journalism and Communications, and today it is still ranked among the nation's top journalism programs, with students hired at news organizations across the country, including highly competitive newsrooms in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles. To some, he is a mythical figure; to others, he is unknown. Auguste Bébian (1789-1839) reflects society's ambivalence toward Deaf history: sometimes recognized, often ignored. In the wake of Abbé de l'Épée, whose name is remembered in posterity and who demonstrated that the large-scale education of Deaf people was possible, Auguste Bébian was nonetheless a key player in an unprecedented upheaval, which in many ways went beyond the educational sphere. The goal of this research on Auguste Bébian, combining biographical elements and analysis of his thinking in unprecedented ways, is not to deconstruct the myth, but rather to decipher the messages it conveys, and to understand what it tells us, indirectly, about the Deaf experience. Born in 1789 in Guadeloupe, part of the French West Indies, it was on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in France, that Auguste Bébian fulfilled most of his destiny. While living at the National Institution for the Deaf in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century, his daily contact with the young students made him the first known hearing person in France to achieve true mastery of sign language, the natural language of Deaf people, and a deep understanding of its inherent culture. On becoming a teacher, he constantly defended the use of sign language as a linguistic system in its own right in order to awaken the intelligence of Deaf children, to whom “we pay no more attention than to the sunlight that shines on us every day.” His numerous publications display a level of modernity rarely seen before or since. This biographical and historical study shows how the passion evinced by Auguste Bébian was a crucial link in the chain of events that led to the emancipation of Deaf people.
