- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, Deakin University, language: English, abstract: Car-centric urban design practice, the principle with which most cities in the world are being built today or since mid-century of 20th century, is affecting the essence of human-scale design or pedestrian friendly/ walkable friendly design. With the rise of numerous problems already in the world with excessive use of non-renewable energy, the talks and discussions are being conducted for the ways of reduction of use of non-renewable energy on global basis, or for the formulation of alternative ways of high use of energy. Not only from problems-related-with-energy perspective, but from social, health, and economic viewpoint as well, just prioritising car-driven approach seems to no longer serve the built environment in a positive way. Several planners, designers and built environment professionals have put forwarded words to re-think about the way urban environments are being built today, and new approaches of prioritising from human-scale perspective i.e. pedestrian or walkable friendly built environment to be explored and given a thought. This research paper concentrates on investigating the deeper understanding about walkable friendly urban environment, the need of today's world. In this paper, framework that shows the relationship of walking activity and behaviour with surrounding physical features, is derived from literature review for the systematic visual assessment. There is no clear and a comprehensive understanding about one particular way that depicts influencing factors of walkability, the corelates between the urban environment and walking behaviour not explained clearly, or if explained the method is somewhat complex and inflexible. Throughout existing knowledge in literature, there is lack of one consistent method of assessment. This research has attempted in finding simpler methods/solution, incorporating with existing knowledge and methods to investigate underlying factors possibly informing about the degree of walkability scale of an urban environment. The study of observation is done on the commercial streets in the central Geelong with the selection of variety of streets form and functions.

- Abstract
Computers can calculate perspective angles and create a drawing for us, but the spontaneity of mark making, the tactile quality of a writing surface, the weight of a drawing instrument, and the immediacy of the human touch are sensations that keep traditional drawing skills perpetually relevant. The sensuality and convenience of the hand persists and will survive as a valuable communication tool, as will the need to accurately express your ideas on paper. As a professional, understanding the foundations of drawing, how we process images, and how we interpret what we see are principal skills. Understanding linear perspective enables artists to accurately communicate their ideas on paper. The Complete Guide to Perspective Drawing offers a step-by-step guide for the beginner as well as the advanced student on how to draw in one-point through six-point perspective and how to make scientifically accurate conceptual illustrations from simple to complex situations.

- Abstract
First published in 1992, this book collects together the papers presented at the International Symposium on Design Review which was held to address the growing tendency of local governments to institute programs of aesthetic control. The editor argues that the widespread adoption of design review processes in the years preceding the conference necessitated thoroughgoing professional criticism and a number of areas of debate are identified and addressed in the subsequent papers. Are the difficulties experienced by planners, community activists and architects with the process due to its relative youth or inherent flaws in the entire concept? How should mechanical problems like time and expense, the ease with which the process can be manipulated, and general inefficiencies in the system be resolved? More intricate problems are also addressed, such as: who has the power to judge the aesthetic quality of a building, whether design review infringes on the rights of the individual especially under the First Amendment, whether the design review process is'fair', and the difficulty for the reviewer of deciding what is right and what is wrong having taken into account factors that can be highly subjective or contradict more practical concerns.

- Abstract
| This paper illustrates a new method used to portray and view the most famous drawing in the world: The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci. A successful workflow of acquisition, processing, visualisation and 3D digital fruition of the paper support aimed at enhancing perceptive realism and achieve a visual detail of a hundredth of a millimetre. The system highlights details of the drawing and specific features that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye. The workflow developed by the authors is a rapid definition model of digital drawing models intended to be used in new studies as well as provide spectacular ways in which they can be enjoyed, communicated and disseminated.

- Abstract
Urban areas have been caught up in a turbulent process of transformation over the past 50 years and changes have been rapid, with issues such as mobility, nature, water management, energy use and public space featuring prominently. In each Olympic year since 1988, the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology has held an international conference focusing on the connection between research and design, exploring the field of tension between science, technology and art. This book presents the proceedings of the latest in this series of conferences: New Urban Configurations, held in Delft, the Netherlands, in October 2012 in collaboration with the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) and the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF). This edition of the conference discussed the role and critical potential of the architectural project in the transformation process of cities and territories that leads to new urban configurations. The publication contains all 140 accepted papers and a selection of the keynote lectures presented at the conference. The papers have been grouped into five main themes: innovation in building typology; infrastructure and the city; complex urban projects; green spaces, and delta urbanism. Four of these major topics are further divided into several subtopics. This book will be of interest to everyone involved in designing, building, thinking about as well as managing the urban landscape and territory.

- Abstract
Nowadays, mental models are seen as crucial in systems design. Research is driven by the assumption that a better insight into a user's cognitive processes when using a system will improve design methods and provide friendly and efficient interfaces. The papers in this volume explore three fundamental issues: understanding the complexity of the intended worksystem, describing it by models and finally building the required powerful and usable system. The papers are an edited selection of those presented at the 8th interdisciplinary workshop on Mental Models and HCI, held in Austria in June 1989. They concentrate primarily on design issues, their theoretical background and the application of the concept of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Nevertheless, there are also contributions on theoretical topics and methodological questions.

- Abstract
There are two things everybody knows about glass: it is transparent, and it breaks! These are also the properties that constitute the challenge of glass as an architectural and structural material. This book presents papers from the third Challenging Glass Conference (CGC3), held at the Technical University (TU) Delft, the Netherlands, in June 2012. The conference brings together glass engineering, research and design specialists. Papers are grouped under seven topic headings: project and case studies; joints, fixings and adhesives; strength, stability and safety (a category which includes a quarter of all the papers presented at the conference); laminates and composite design; curved and bended glass; architectural design and lighting and finally, glass in facades. Glass remains one of the most exciting materials available to designers and architects today. This book will be of interest to all those involved in working with glass in an architectural and structural context.

- Abstract
This book focuses on understanding how a megacity like Seoul can be read as a formal architectural composition and not an endless urban sprawl. In a broader sense, the book discusses the dichotomy between city and urbanization: “city” being an architectural problem of bounded forms, while “urbanism” is an infrastructural project of expansion. It is an uncontested reality that urbanization is a continuous global process that has produced nebulous conurbations labeled as megacities. These expand beyond the virtual administrative boundary of any said “city,” producing a discrepancy between an area of administrative control and the real physical condition of human settlement. If there were a better formal understanding of megacities through their typological architectural conditions, then there could be a better assessment of the qualitative state of urbanization. Avant-garde groups from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s such as Team X, the Situationist, the Structuralist, and the Metabolist worked with ideas of megaforms and megastructures to address this issue. Although most of these proposals remained as paper architecture, this book reevaluates some of these ideas for the 21st-century megacity, using Seoul as a case study due to its clear typological formations produced over its diff erent periods of governance. The aim is to present the concept for an infra-architectural hybrid model of typological islands and subterranean megastructure that organizes Seoul as a flexible multi-linear city. This book will be of interest to academics and students of architecture, urban geography and Asian studies.

- Abstract
Based on extensive architectural and archaeological research, these papers present a series of studies on the art, buildings, settlement patterns, and land use in Iraq, Yemen and Oman, from the pre-Islamic period to modern times. Many of the monuments and sites were studied here for the first time, and have subsequently disappeared or become inaccessible. Among the main themes emerging from Professor Costa's work are the continuity of Arab craftsmanship, in both technical and aesthetic terms, from Late Antiquity into the Islamic period; the relationship between the natural and the built environment; and the dependence of architecture and settlement patterns on the exploitation of natural resources, especially water.

- Abstract
In this book, Patricia Blessing explores the emergence of Ottoman architecture in the fifteenth century and its connection with broader geographical contexts. Analyzing how transregional exchange shaped building practices, she examines how workers from Anatolia, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Iran and Central Asia participated in key construction projects. She also demonstrates how drawn, scalable models on paper served as templates for architectural decorations and supplemented collaborations that involved the mobility of workers. Blessing reveals how the creation of centralized workshops led to the emergence of a clearly defined imperial Ottoman style by 1500, when the flexibility and experimentation of the preceding century was levelled. Her book radically transforms our understanding of Ottoman architecture by exposing the diverse and fluid nature of its formative period. It also provides the reader with an understanding of design, planning, and construction processes of a major empire of the Islamic world.

- Abstract
Transacting as Art, Design and Architecture: A Non-Commercial Market re-performs the original event #TransActing: A Market of Values as a printed text with the ambition of investing in the published word and image at least some of the original market's depth and liveness. Holding fast to the experimental ethos of Critical Practice, this anthology does not shy away from risk when the aim is expanding the fields of art, design and architectural research. The authors'distinct but also overlapping forms (practical, poetic, analytical, etc.) track with the plurality of voices, the processes that have nurtured the cluster as it has worked internationally for more than a decade to produce unique projects. The book opens with contributions that reflect on TransActing as collaborative practice-based research. The introduction contextualizes this popup market within London's long history of local marketplaces. Cued by emerging government policy on market sustainability, the tripartite of place, people and prosperity helps to frame TransActing. Taking a different approach, a partial self-portrait of Critical Practice traces TransActing's becoming over more than a decade of activity and five years of research on value. This is followed by an account of the market's physical infrastructure: the prototyping of bespoke stalls which were built from recycled materials, an approach inspired by an early example of open-source furniture design. This comes to life in the next section: polyphonic observations on the stalls in use and the market more generally. The stallholders'reflections capture the experience of those directly involved and are richly illustrated with images of or related to their stalls. The second part of Transacting as Art, Design and Architecture is composed of commissioned texts to contextualise the market by weaving together references from various fields. These include celebrating the value system of TransActing, especially its critique econometrics. Closely connected to the latter, which was occasioned by Critical Practice's tenth anniversary, is the subsequent paper's consideration of invisible, feminized labour, which is as undervalued as it is indispensable to cultural production. Taking a slightly different tack is the use of architectural theory (past and present) to trace the transforming nature of the public market, especially as an arena of consumerism. This is followed by an account that looks at the experience of TransActing from the perspective of its local currency. This story is followed by a conversation on the art market and/or the markets of art. This brings the reader to a manifesto-like text that calls for solidarity through publishing, understood as the co-production of meaning through a distributed social process. The penultimate contribution to this collection considers TransActing as a built environment with reference to the market's shelters and platforms. Finally, a glossary rounds off and opens up the publication as a resource. This compilation of key terms adds nuance to the language used throughout this publication to indicate its resonance in the discourse of Critical Practice. The collection aims to prioritize practice-based insights as an alternative to knowledge-based ones. In this way the book aims to be a refreshing take, one that moves art-research discussions beyond the creation of knowledge. As such, this book will appeal to all those involved in the ‘research turn'in contemporary cultural production, including those working in institutions and organizations, especially ones with strong community engagement programmes, as well as independent practitioners working in social and socially engaged practice. Primary readership will be practitioners of art, design, curating and architecture and students studying in these fields. The secondary audience will include cultural producers, theorists, educators and others who are interested in h

- Abstract
London's Global Office Economy: From Clerical Factory to Digital Hub is a timely and comprehensive study of the office from the very beginnings of the workplace to its post-pandemic future. The book takes the reader on a journey through five ages of the office, encompassing sixteenth-century coffee houses and markets, eighteenth-century clerical factories, the corporate offices emerging in the nineteenth, to the digital and network offices of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. While offices might appear ubiquitous, their evolution and role in the modern economy are among the least explained aspects of city development. One-third of the workforce uses an office; and yet the buildings themselves – their history, design, construction, management and occupation – have received only piecemeal explanation, mainly in specialist texts. This book examines everything from paper clips and typewriters, to design and construction, to workstyles and urban planning to explain the evolution of the ‘office economy'.Using London as a backdrop, Rob Harris provides built environment practitioners, academics, students and the general reader with a fascinating, illuminating and comprehensive perspective on the office. Readers will find rich material linking fields that are normally treated in isolation, in a story that weaves together the pressures exerting change on the businesses that occupy office space with the motives and activities of those who plan, supply and manage it. Our unfolding understanding of offices, the changes through which they have passed, the nature of office work itself and its continuing evolution is a fascinating story and should appeal to anyone with an interest in contemporary society and its relationship with work.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, grade: Distinction, Queen's University Belfast, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study is to provide effectively managed constraints by defining constraints that prevent their targets and thus to increase the profitability of firms. Identifying and removing constraints from bottleneck activities help to reduce uncertainties in construction processes and increases the transparency of project management. Various continuous improvement (CI) strategies have been developed and applied to improve manufacturing system performance. This paper studies the combination of two distinct strategies, Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Theory of Constraint(s) (TOC), for improving manufacturing system performance. The research includes reviews of these two methodologies and the implementation process involved in each strategy. Examination of the possibilities to improve manufacturing system performance through integration of these two strategies. The effectiveness of the integrated approach along with an examination of different factors, recommendations, and presentation of best possible management practices for the application of this integrated approach. In an organization, there are attempts to achieve multiple projects with common, shared resources; the work can be challenging. Managers might find themselves on project overload with continual resource shortages and difficulty in determining the most important tasks. The focus of the research is on the elimination of non-value added activities through an application of a management philosophy that identifies and eliminates the waste from each step in the production throughout the Value Stream. A comparative analysis is carried out through reviews and studies regarding Lean Process and TOC- application to determine the manager's potential benefits like reduced production lead-time and lesser work-in-process inventory.

- Abstract
From architecture to landscape, the step was not short, like the jumping in scale in the perspective perception of spaces. For architecture, the view stopped against a wall, to then enter and capture the space through the category of the Alberti concinnitas. This book contains articles developed for conferences and magazine papers, written over the last fi ve years, and reconstructs a theoretical and design path of the author and his students at the Politecnico di Milano. Landscape representations of the students are presented, the result of a mixed path between personal perception and visualization techniques, including manual drawing, photography, video and photo retouching. The search for new paths can lead to the desperate exaltation of the expressive characters of each of us (perhaps meaningless) or to the laying of new cornerstones of the representation of the future: we need to go beyond the modern to be a frontier, we need to be avant-garde to recognize in a new sign a symbol of our contemporaneity.

- Abstract
If postmodernism is indeed'the cultural logic of late capitalism', why did typical postmodernist themes like ornament, colour, history and identity find their application in the architecture of the socialist Second World? How do we explain the retreat into paper architecture and theoretical discussion in societies still nominally devoted to socialist modernization?Exploring the intersection of two areas of growing scholarly interest - postmodernism and the architecture of the former socialist world - this edited collection stakes out new ground in charting architecture's various transformations in the 1970s and 80s. Fourteen essays together explore the question of whether or not architectural postmodernism had a specific Second World variant. The collection demonstrates both the unique nature of Second World architectural phenomena and also assesses connections with western postmodernism. The case studies cover the vast geographical scope from Eastern Europe to China and Cuba. They address a wealth of aesthetic, discursive and practical phenomena, interpreting them in the broader socio-political context of the last decades of the Cold War. The result provides a greatly expanded map of recent architectural history, which redefines postmodernist architecture in a more theoretically comprehensive and global way.

- Abstract
Book Award Finalist for Urban Design Group Awards 2020 Human settlements are the result of a mix of self-organisation and planning. Planners are fighting a losing battle to impose order on chaotic systems. Connections between the process of urban growth and the fields of complexity theory are of increasing importance to planners and urbanists alike; the idea that cities are emergent structures created not by design but from the interplay of relatively simple rules and forces over time. From the the small Tuscan hill town to the megacities of Asia: the struggle between the planned and the unplanned is universal. Based on years of international research, Climax City is a critical exploration of the growth of cities and masterplanning. Challenging the idea that the city can be entirely planned on paper, this book implores you to work with chaos when planning cities. Beautifully illustrated with striking hand-drawn plans of global cities, this is a vital and accessible contribution to urban theory and planning. It's the perfect title for practitioners and academics across planning and urban design looking to make sense out of chaos.

- Abstract
In recent years, artists, architects, activists and curators, as well as corporations and local governments have addressed the urban space. They challenge its use and destination, and dispute current notions of space, legality, trade and artistry. Emerging art practices challenge old ideas about where art belongs, what forms it can take and what political discourses it fosters. Selected from papers presented at the 2013 Artscapes conference in Canterbury, this collection of new essays explores the dynamic relationship between art and the city. Contributors discuss the everyday artistic use of public space around the world, from sculpture to graffiti to street photography.

- Abstract
Architecture is energy. Lines drawn on paper to represent architectural intentions also imply decades and sometimes centuries of associated energy and material flows. Form Follows Energy is about the relationship between energy and the form of our built environment. It examines the optimisation of energy flows in building and urban design and the implications for form and configuration. It speaks to both architectural and engineering audiences and offers for the first time a truly interdisciplinary overview on the subject, explaining the complex relationships between energy and architecture in an easy to follow manner and using simple diagrams to show how energy design strategies can be used to maximize the energy performance of our built environment, while at the same time leading to new aesthetic qualities and radically new forms in architecture and urban design. Case studies are used to illustrate the theory. The books philosophy is based on the guiding principles underlying nearly 30 years work in practice, research and teaching. It is relatively easy to make something simple seem complicated. To make a complex topic seem simple and easily understandable is far more of a challenge and this is the aim of this book.

Peter Draper and Peter Draper
- Abstract
Nikolaus Pevsner was one of the most important and influential art historians of the twentieth century. He opened up new areas of enquiry in the history of art, revolutionising architectural studies in England and playing a key role in establishing the discipline of design history. Through his lectures and broadcasts, as well as the remarkable volumes in The Buildings of England series which made him a household name, he did much to encourage greater interest in, and understanding of, art and architecture among a wide public. This wide-ranging collection of essays, based on papers delivered at the conference held at Birkbeck in celebration of the centenary of Pevsner's birth, offers the first sustained critical assessment of Pevsner's achievements. With contributions by leading international scholars, the volume brings together a wealth of new material on Pevsner and his intellectual background, both in Germany in the late 1920s and 1930s and in England, particularly in the 1940s and 1950s.

- Abstract
Processes of Creating Space is a workbook for beginning designers that shows how to generate space with user experiences in mind. It explains how to keenly perceive your world and seamlessly integrate architectural representation into your design process. The book uses two main strategies, blending the design process with material processes and media techniques and ‘experiential typologies'- emphasising first-hand experience of space. Five highly experimental assignments explore the interwoven relationship between design process and design tools, to help you learn when to incorporate writing, architectural photography, macro photography, orthographic projection, perspective projection, hand-drawing, CAD, mass modelling, hot wire foam cutting, 3D modelling, multi-part plaster mold making, slip casting, plaster casting, paper casting, monocoque shell structures, working with latex, concrete, twine pulp, full-scale prototyping and more. Illustrated with more than 350 color images, the book also includes a section on material fabrication techniques and a glossary of technical terms. An eResource containing downloadable essays, stop-motion videos, sample schedules, and supplementary information can be found here: www.routledge.com/9781138903685

- Abstract
| This paper is a scientific report about the studies and works recently performed in the Charterhouse of St. Martin to restore an ancient sundial and make it work. In fact, the sun's rays were once again allowed to enter throughout the year, until the winter solstice; due to incorrect consolidation the sun had not shone on this solstice for decades. We also analysed the tin-glazed, hand-decorated ceramic tiles painted by Leonardo Chiaiese to verify, and possibly disseminate, the fact that the arrangement of painted constellations around the meridian line immortalises a rare astronomical event and cannot be simply considered as an artistic decoration because it actively collaborates with the sundial.

- Abstract
| The paper analyses several documents illustrating the first two-dimensional and three-dimensional digital drawing systems, called Sketchpad, invented fifty years ago by the young MIT student Ivan Sutherland. Several differences between Sketchpad and traditional representation techniques reveal the enormous effort devoted to its theoretical formulation. This effort is illustrated by several important theoretical contributions, including the ones by Steven Coons, and several technical memorandums about its operating system.

- Abstract
The Jesuit investment in images, whether verbal or visual, virtual or actual, pictorial or poetic, rhetorical or exegetical, was strong and sustained, and may even be identified as one of the order's defining characteristics. Although this interest in images has been richly documented by art historians, theatre historians, and scholars of the emblem, the question of Jesuit image theory has yet to be approached from a multi-disciplinary perspective that examines how the image was defined, conceived, produced, and interpreted within the various fields of learning cultivated by the Society: sacred oratory, pastoral instruction, scriptural exegesis, theology, collegiate pedagogy, poetry and poetics, etc. The papers published in this volume investigate the ways in which Jesuits reflected visually and verbally on the status and functions of the imago, between the foundation of the order in 1540 and its suppression in 1773. Part I examines texts that purport explicitly to theorize about the imago and to analyze its various forms and functions. Part II examines what one might call expressions of embedded image theory, that is, various instances where Jesuit authors and artists use images implicitly to explore the status and functions of such images as indices of image-making. | Conic perspective is the art of observing, not the art of seeing. Historical studies about perspective are usually devoted to speculation about the vision or existence of vanishing points, a subject that has always fascinated scholars: their repeated and obsessive exploration of historical images are a specific field of study for analysts which has led them to identify conic perspective with the projective properties of parallel straight lines. This paper maintains that the initial decision to observe from a single viewpoint was more important, as it developed, than the alleged discovery of the mythical end points of straight lines.

- Abstract
A place of astonishing contrasts, India is home to some of the world's most ancient architectures as well as some of its most modern. It was the focus of some of the most important works created by Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, among other lesser-known masters, and it is regarded by many as one of the key sites of mid-twentieth century architectural design. As Peter Scriver and Amit Srivastava show in this book, however, India's history of modern architecture began long before the nation's independence as a modern state in 1947. Going back to the nineteenth century, Scriver and Srivastava look at the beginnings of modernism in colonial India and the ways that public works and patronage fostered new design practices that directly challenged the social order and values invested in the building traditions of the past. They then trace how India's architecture embodies the dramatic shifts in Indian society and culture during the last century. Making sense of a broad range of sources, from private papers and photographic collections to the extensive records of the Indian Public Works Department, they provide the most rounded account of modern architecture in India that has yet been available.

| This paper illustrates the objectives, methods, procedures, and results of the innovative digital database of Palladio's works: the palladioLibrary project. The database has fifty-one 3D models which can be accessed and browsed using the Google Earth geosystem. The system was developed by four universities in collaboration with the Andrea Palladio International Centre for Architectural Studies in Vicenza. It provides a comprehensive, multifaceted, and logical semantic interpretation of Palladio's works using buildings realistically recreated based on surveys and historical sources, and then processed with Google Earth using Ambient Occlusion techniques instead of more traditional visualisation methods.

| Sheet n. 2583 in the Fondo Mascarino of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca is the only perspective drawing of the approximately 250 drawings in the holding. It was probably donated to the Academy by Ottaviano Mascarino before he died in 1606. There is very little bibliography about this drawing of a loggia with Doric columns in a hemicycle; in addition, it has never been analysed monographically. | As our knowledge evolves the space we traditionally perceive as empty space filled with physical entities has become a dense, solid and above all physically manipulable space thanks to a series of sensors that create bridges between what we see and what we don't see. 47. Urban Form Definition In Urban Planning

- Abstract
It is necessary to explore the scale of urban planning with the subject matter of architecture, which does not stop at building designs. Neither does it become urban just because architects design blocks of buildings and the outdoors space between. The urban space must be a pre-existence with respect to building projects, which shall successively interpret and carry it out. Knowledge and means at our disposal must also be determined in terms of physical planning as to define, establish, and/or issue standards for an urban space. The creation of this architectural object - urban space - requires a reformulation of understanding methods and transmitting the outdoors space's form independently from the building project, which shall interpret the latter and carry it out. Those subjects send us to different kinds of problems: To clarify the town concepts of designers and citizens; To know the relation between the town concept and its physical expression; To define the formal expression of urban planning; To discuss the morphology characteristics that translate the town concept to be implemented; To adapt professional practices to new architectonic responsibilities. In this paper we develop an approach to the relation between the town concept and its physical expression, as well as the form characteristics that will be established in urban plans.

Art and Architecture in Ladakh shows how the region's cultural development has been influenced by its location across the great communications routes linking India with Tibet and Central Asia. Edited by Erberto Lo Bue and John Bray, the collection contains 17 research papers by experienced international art historians and architectural conservationists, as well as emerging scholars from Ladakh itself. Their topics range widely over time, from prehistoric rock art to mediaeval Buddhist stupas and wall paintings, as well as early modern castle architecture, the inter-regional trade in silk brocades, and the challenges of 21st century conservation. Taken together, these studies complement each other to provide a detailed view of Ladakh's varied cultural inheritance in the light of the latest research.Contributors include: Monisha Ahmed, Marjo Alafouzo, André Alexander, Chiara Bellini, Kristin Blancke, John Bray, Laurianne Bruneau, Andreas Catanese, Philip Denwood, Quentin Devers, Phuntsog Dorjay, Hubert Feiglstorfer, John Harrison, Neil and Kath Howard, Gerald Kozicz, Erberto Lo Bue, Filippo Lunardo, Kacho Mumtaz Ali Khan, Heinrich Poell, Tashi Ldawa Thsangspa and Martin Vernier.

- Abstract
Documents, such as drawings, memos and specifications, form an essential function in the design and construction industry. Throughout the lifecycle of a built asset, starting from an initial design idea, right through to a final built form and its ongoing management, thousands, even millions of documents can be used to convey various forms of information to a range of interested parties. In many ways, therefore, the success of a design, or construction-based company, relies upon an understanding of the use of documents, as well as the technologies and techniques that are used to create them. The Digital Document provides an extensive background to the issues and technologies surrounding this very important topic. It examines a technical subject in an insightful manner that is neither intimidating nor confusing, even to the novice computer user. By introducing the subject through a series of preliminary reviews of current practices and essential computing technologies, the reader is able to better appreciate the benefits and capabilities of a wide range of digital document types. This book explores the role of documents in a professional practice, examines the components, capabilities, viability, and use of digital documents in the design and construction industry, and identifies and explains many of the standards in use today. In order to facilitate a better understanding of digital document technologies, a number of essential reviews are provided including: - the definition and purpose of a document - how documents are typically used by design professionals - the nature of the digital document environment - the data types which make up digital documentsThe Digital Document is an essential reference for the architect, engineer or design professional that wants to find out more about effective communication in the digital workplace.Bruce Duyshart is an IT Project Manager with Lend Lease Corporation and specialises in the development and implementation of digital media and information management technologies on design and construction projects.
