In January 1976, Raymond Barre, the first President of The Geneva Association, and Orio Giarini, its first Secretary General, founded The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance with the main goal of supporting and encouraging research in the economics of risk and insurance. At that time, research in the field of insurance was still embryonic and insurance was regarded as peripheral social activity. When sustained economic growth gained traction, the function of insurance gradually emerged as a key contributor to economic development. By integrating uncertainty into economic theory and benefiting from the progress of both financial economics and decision theory, research developed further in the field of insurance economics and risk management, and is now prolific. The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance undeniably contributed to this evolution and its impact on research in insurance has largely exceeded what its two founding members could have expected. Concerns the decision of International Paper, the world's largest pulp and paper corporation, about when to adopt the provisions of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards 106 (SFAS 106),'Employers'Accounting for Postretirement Benefits Other than Pensions.'SFAS 106 requires the accrual of a significant balance sheet liability to recognize the future cost of promises made to employees to pay for benefits during retirement, most importantly for health insurance benefits. Compared to the prevailing'pay-as-you-go'accounting, the provisions of SFAS 106 typically require a higher annual expense for'other postemployment benefits'(OPEB). Set in late November 1992, a year after the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) announced the final form of SFAS 106. Application of the new rules was required for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 1992, but as usual earlier adoption was encouraged. In addition, on adoption of the new standard companies were given the option of either recognizing the liability for accrued benefits immediately, or gradually over a period of up to twenty years. Thus, IP was faced with decisions both of when and how to adopt SFAS 106.

The purpose of this book is to describe the intellectual process by which Real Business Cycle models were developed. The approach taken focuses on the core elements in the development of RBC models: (i) building blocks, (ii) catalysts, and (iii) meta-syntheses. This is done by detailed examination of all available unpublished variorum drafts of the key papers in the RBC story, so as to determine the origins of the ideas. The analysis of the process their discovery is then set out followed by explanations of the evolution and dissemination of the models, from first generation papers through full blown research programs. This is supplemented by interviews and correspondence with the individuals who were at the center of the development of RBC models, such as Kydland, Prescott, Long, Plosser, King, Lucas and Barro, among others. Magnus Wanberg is the creator of reMarkable, a breakthrough e-writer device set apart from similar products on the market by having solved the frustrating'slow ink'problem typically experienced on pen-based electronic devices, thus providing a'pen and paper'like experience. Moreover, the device allowed for the convenient and non-eye-straining reading of typical documents. Though enthusiastically received by several investors, there was still a long way to go before the prototype could reach a final commercial product. From May 20 to May 24, 1986 a conference on distributive justice and in­ equality was held at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin (Wis­ senschaftskolleg zu Berlin). More than thirty scholars participated in this conference. The topics of the presentations ranged from ethics, welfare economics and social choice theory to characterizations of inequality meas­ ures and redistributive taxation schemes. This book contains a selection of the papers given at the conference. This collection of articles also appeared as issues 2 and 3 of volume 5 of Social Choice and Welfare. In the first paper P. Suppes argues for a pluralistic concept of equity. For too long the emphasis has been on income distribution but there are other characteristics which are important when one talks about equity. Suppes suggests that it would be desirable to have Lorenz curves for a variety of fea­ tures of societies, such as education, health and housing. P. Dasgupta studies the quality of lives in terms of an index of living stand­ ards. One has to distinguish between'same number choices'(the number of lives is given) and'different numbers choices'(problem of optimum popUlation). The author argues that in the latter case the anonymity (or sym­ metry) axiom cannot be readily defended. Once it is dropped, however, an incoherence in the moral ordering of possible worlds arises. The moral basis for different numbers choices becomes generation-dependent, an overall moral ordering of possible worlds no longer exists.

Students are required to do a team project. During the project, they are to do a benchmarking study of a business process to determine best practice or to study a single business process for the purposes of discovering improvement opportunities. The student teams are required to report their results in a 10- to 15-page paper. In years past, students have struggled to'ground'their findings properly in the specific observations and other data they have collected through direct observation, interview, survey, and other methods. As a result, the persuasiveness of their papers has suffered. Furthermore, and of longer term concern, the students have not fully exploited the opportunity to develop a critical management skill--reasoning inductively to discover how a process or system works when an adequate explanation is lacking a priori.
