In the twenty years since Ray Land and Erik Meyer published their first paper on Threshold Concepts, there has been a steady stream of papers mulling over their original suggestions that learning, far from proceeding in an orderly fashion, is instead a process of struggle – perhaps alienation and confusion – that puts students in a troublesome liminal ‘in-between'state. As their understanding develops, liminality gives way to transformational insight whereby a whole field of study comes, often quite abruptly, into focus. There is a gain but often also a loss: in this new world, old certainties, assumptions and even aspects of our identity can be left by the wayside. Threshold Concepts in the Moment is the sixth collection in the series on the subject of Threshold Concepts, following the 8th Biennial Conference held in 2021, anchored at London's UCL but running online across the world. Its contributors, who range from ‘old hands'to new members of the community finding their feet, mull over the insights of the threshold concepts framework in higher education, scrutinise their own fields of study, explore the implications of liminality for pedagogy and becoming professional practitioners, and consider the broad implications for pedagogy of factoring in the troublesomeness of knowledge and learning.

Writing can be a tortuous process in any discipline. However, it can be particularly daunting in science, technology, engineering, the arts or architecture, and mathematics (henceforth, STEAM). In fact, it is not uncommon for most STEAM professionals to say things like,'As an engineer, I write only when I have to…'or'engaging in science is easy for me but sitting down and writing my manuscripts are so painful'or'I'm really good at math but I'm a terrible writer…'However, writing can become an easier process in STEAM especially when one's ideas are fleshed out and organized in a systematic manner. While there are a number of books or articles on reading and writing in specific STEM disciplines, at present, there are no books or supplementary materials that serve to support STEAM learners, practitioners, and even researchers in becoming better critical writers. Writing Critically in STEAM will be the first book of its kind to focus primarily on what the scientist, technology specialist, engineer, artist, art historian, or architect, and mathematician needs to know in order to become a finer writer in one's field. In addition, given the current post-truth zeitgeist, Writing Critically in STEAM addresses the essential issue of evidence as a means of supporting scientific and scientifically related claims.

There are a number of books focused on the craft of college-level teaching. However, the vast majority of those books are tailored to tenure-track faculty. A number of specialty books also have been published, including texts on balancing teaching and research, techniques for teaching certain types of students (e.g., first-generation), and techniques for teaching for certain types of instructors (e.g., African-American women). Online resources are available, but locating material can be time-consuming.The target audience for The Essentials of College Teaching: A Guide for New and Adjunct College Instructors are adjunct (non tenure-track) instructors. Adjuncts now constitute 76.4% of U.S. faculty across all institutional types, with a staggering 80% at two-year institutions. Although teaching a heavy load, adjuncts are not typically included in on-campus professional development opportunities to improve their teaching skills. This book would be particularly helpful for first time or relatively novice college-level instructors, including doctoral graduate students teaching their first sections, new community college instructors, and new four-year college and university instructors.It's designed to get novice instructors through their first term, nerves intact and students satisfied. Recommendations are based on empirically supported best practices for teaching, while aiming for a concise, slightly irreverent, occasionally humorous style of writing.
