Background: Cervical cancer contributes to 6%-29% of the cancers in India. Although the Government of India in 2010 integrated cancer screening within the National Programme for the prevention of Non-communicable Diseases, only 22% of women aged 15-45 years had undergone examination of the cervix by 2016. This prompts the question regarding the organisation of the program's implementation and service delivery and regarding challenges that may explain poor screening uptake., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were held with program managers and implementers in seven districts of three selected States of India. The data analysis looked at program content, the organisation of screening delivery, and the challenges to the implementation of the program, considering six theoretically derived dimensions of public health capacity: leadership and governance, organisational structure, financial resources, workforce, partnerships, and knowledge development., Results: Participants perceive the existing capacities across the six domains as insufficient to implement the CCS program nationwide. A context specific implementation, a better coordination between the program and district health facilities, timely remuneration, better maintenance of data and a strong monitoring system are possible solutions to remove health system related barriers., Conclusion: The study provides evidence on the practical challenges and provides recommendations for strengthening the capacities of the health system., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Accurate segmentation of breast masses in mammogram images is essential for early cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Several deep learning (DL) models have been proposed for whole mammogram segmentation and mass patch/crop segmentation. However, current DL models for breast mammogram mass segmentation face several limitations, including false positives (FPs), false negatives (FNs), and challenges with the end‐to‐end approach. This paper presents a novel two‐stage end‐to‐end cascaded breast mass segmentation framework that incorporates a saliency map of potential mass regions to guide the DL models for breast mass segmentation. The first‐stage segmentation model of the cascade framework is used to generate a saliency map to establish a coarse region of interest (ROI), effectively narrowing the focus to probable mass regions. The proposed presegmenter attention (PSA) blocks are introduced in the second‐stage segmentation model to enable dynamic adaptation to the most informative regions within the mammogram images based on the generated saliency map. Comparative analysis of the Attention U‐net model with and without the cascade framework is provided in terms of dice scores, precision, recall, FP rates (FPRs), and FN outcomes. Experimental results consistently demonstrate enhanced breast mass segmentation performance by the proposed cascade framework across all three datasets: INbreast, CSAW‐S, and DMID. The cascade framework shows superior segmentation performance by improving the dice score by about 6% for the INbreast dataset, 3% for the CSAW‐S dataset, and 2% for the DMID dataset. Similarly, the FN outcomes were reduced by 10% for the INbreast dataset, 19% for the CSAW‐S dataset, and 4% for the DMID dataset. Moreover, the proposed cascade framework's performance is validated with varying state‐of‐the‐art segmentation models such as DeepLabV3+ and Swin transformer U‐net. The presegmenter cascade framework has the potential to improve segmentation performance and mitigate FNs when integrated with any medical image segmentation framework, irrespective of the choice of the model. About one-fifth of all oral cancer cases reported globally are from India. The low-income groups in India are affected most due to the wide exposure to risk factors such as tobacco chewing and insufficient access to early diagnostic tools. Visual examination and histological study are the standard for oral cancer detection. This paper proposes the idea of using Autofluorescence-based imaging techniques to detect and classify oral cancer using AI algorithms. Background: Cervical cancer cases in India account for one-fourth of the worldwide burden. Colposcopy is used to evaluate the cervix of women with abnormal screening test results. For standardized reporting, various scores were introduced of those, Reid Colposcopic Index (RCI) and Swede score are the most commonly used., Aims and Objectives: This study is undertaken to determine the diagnostic efficacy and clinical relevance of the newly introduced MSCI and compare MSCI and Modified Reid Index., Results: 225 women out of 237 were analyzed. MSCI score 9 perform best for colposcopic diagnosis of CIN 2 or higher lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for threshold score 9 for CIN 2 or higher lesions were 94.92 %, 67.88 %, 51.38 %, and 97.39 % respectively. Modified Reid Index threshold 3 performed best for the detection of CIN 2 or higher lesions with a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of 84.75 %, 44.85 %, 35.46 %, and 89.16 % respectively. On comparing the area under the curve (AUC) for MSCI and MRI, we found that the difference between the AUC of MSCI (0.854) and Modified Reid Index (0.657) was significant (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: MSCI performs better than the modified reid index for the diagnosis of both HGL and LGL or higher. Background: In order for low and middle income countries (LMIC) to transition to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) test based cervical cancer screening, a greater understanding of how to implement these evidence based interventions (EBI) among vulnerable populations is needed. This paper documents outcomes of an implementation research on HPV screening among women from tribal, rural, urban slum settings in India. Methods: A mixed-method, pragmatic, quasi-experimental trial design was used. HPV screening on self-collected cervical samples was offered to women aged 30–60 years. Implementation strategies were 1) Assessment of contextual factors using both qualitative and quantitative methods like key informant interviews (KII), focus group discussions (FGDs), pre-post population sample surveys, capacity assessment of participating departments 2) enhancing provider capacity through training workshops, access to HPV testing facility, colposcopy, thermal ablation/cryotherapy at the primary health care centers 3) community engagement, counselling for self-sampling and triage process by frontline health care workers (HCWs). Outcomes were assessed using the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework. Results: Screening rate in 8 months' of study was 31.0%, 26.7%, 32.9%, prevalence of oncogenic HPV was 12.1%, 3.1%, 5.5%, compliance to triage was 53.6%, 45.5%, 84.6% in tribal, urban slum, rural sites respectively. Pre-cancer among triage compliant HPV positive women was 13.6% in tribal, 4% in rural and 0% among urban slum women. Unique challenges faced in the tribal setting led to programme adaptations like increasing honoraria of community health workers for late-evening work and recalling HPV positive women for colposcopy by nurses, thermal ablation by gynaecologist at the outreach camp site. Conclusions: Self-collection of samples combined with HCW led community engagement activities, flexible triage processes and strengthening of health system showed an acceptable screening rate and better compliance to triage, highlighting the importance of identifying the barriers and developing strategies suitable for the setting. In India and over the world, Cancer has become a deadly disease that is adversely affecting women from different age groups. According to a survey, one in every 30 women suffers from this deadly disease in their lifetime. This project was first thought of because of the increase in cases of breast cancer and if we can detect it at an early stage then there is an increased chance of it getting cured. This paper lays a foundation in making the detection of cancer automated from histopathological images using deep learning algorithms so that more and more people can get it diagnosed at an early stage and subsequently get cured. To enhance the capability of histopathology image classification, a powerful deep learning algorithm and a sizable, varied dataset are required. In this paper, we have proposed an automatic and precise histopathological image analytical method, to detect breast cancer at an early stage. Deep learning techniques have recently made significant strides and produced outstanding results in the fields of computer vision and image processing, which has encouraged many researchers to use this method for the categorization of histopathology images. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the cervical cancer screening rate dropped by 84% soon after the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenges facing cervical cancer screening were largely attributed to the required in-person nature of the screening process and the measures implemented to control the spread of the virus. While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer screening is well-documented in high-income countries, less is known about the low- and middle-income countries that bear 90% of the global burden of cervical cancer deaths. In this paper, we aim to offer a comprehensive view of the impact of COVID-19 on cervical cancer screening in LMICs. Using our study, "Prevention of Cervical Cancer in India through Self-Sampling" (PCCIS), as a case example, we present the challenges COVID-19 has exerted on patients, healthcare practitioners, and health systems, as well as potential opportunities to mitigate these challenges. Background: Cancer is often detected much later to its onset, resulting in poor prognosis. This makes cancer the second most common cause of death globally. Looking for cancers much before any symptoms occur is termed "cancer screening" and is a powerful strategy for prevention, early diagnosis, and better management of several cancers. This paper examines the status of cancer screening in India from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 report for the period of 2019–2021. Methods: Secondary data on participation in screening for cervical, breast, and oral cancer were extracted from the NFHS-5 report. Participation status for all the above cancer types is represented as percentages and compared across 28 states and eight union territories in India. Results: The percentages of women who have ever undergone cervical, breast, and oral cavity screening were 1.9%, 0.9%, and 0.9%, respectively. About 1.2% of men participated in oral cavity screening. The highest percentage of cervical and breast cancer screening participation was reported in Tamil Nadu (9.8% and 5.6%, respectively), followed by Puducherry (7.4% and 4.2%) and Mizoram (6.9% and 2.7%). Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported the highest oral cancer screening among women (10.1%) while Andhra Pradesh (6.3%) reported the highest participation among men. Conclusion: Cancer screening participation in India is extremely inadequate and calls for the immediate attention of national and state governments. Additional efforts are warranted to improve public awareness of cancer screening, and appropriate measures should be implemented to conduct well-organized screening programs across the country to ensure maximum participation. Kidney cancer is the most common type of cancer, and designing an automated system to accurately classify the cancer grade is of paramount importance for a better prognosis of the disease from histopathological kidney cancer images. Application of deep learning neural networks (DLNNs) for histopathological image classification is thriving and implementation of these networks on edge devices has been gaining the ground correspondingly due to high computational power and low latency requirements. This paper designs an automated system that classifies histopathological kidney cancer images. For experimentation, we have collected Kidney histopathological images of Non-cancerous, cancerous, and their respective grade of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) from Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore, Karnataka, India. We have implemented and analyzed performances of deep learning architectures on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board. Results yield that the Inception-V3 network provides better accuracy for kidney cancer detection as compared to other deep learning models on Kidney histopathological images. Further, the DenseNet-169 network provides better accuracy for kidney cancer grading as compared to other existing deep learning architecture on the FPGA board. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oral cancer is of significant public health importance to India owing to its high prevalence. Early detection of oral cancer offers the best chance for long term survival and has the potential to improve treatment outcomes and make healthcare affordable. The objective of this paper is to report a case on similar difficulty faced in public health care scenario and to create awareness among services sector on focusing the incidence of disease in the country highlighting the significance of a community dentist's role in guidance of betterment of life an individual who was ignorant and asymptomatic. Cancer awareness is the key to early detection and better health-seeking behaviour. Cancer is quite common in both developing as well as developed countries, but awareness is yet poor among the general population. Poor awareness may lead to poor uptake of screening modalities and delay in diagnosis. One factor that has been consistently shown to be associated with late diagnosis and treatment is a delay in seeking help for cancer-like symptoms. This paper reviews the literature on cancer awareness among the general population and attitude towards screening modalities. The poor awareness level among the Indian population shows the need for health education and sensitisation regarding cancer and its different aspects. The reductions in cancer morbidity and mortality afforded by population-based cancer screening programmes have led many low-income and middle-income countries to consider the implementation of national screening programmes in the public sector. Screening at the population level, when planned and organised, can greatly benefit the population, whilst disorganised screening can increase costs and reduce benefits. The International Cancer Screening Network (ICSN) was created to share lessons, experience, and evidence regarding cancer screening in countries with organised screening programmes. Organised screening programmes provide screening to an identifiable target population and use multidisciplinary delivery teams, coordinated clinical oversight committees, and regular review by a multidisciplinary evaluation board to maximise benefit to the target population. In this Series paper, we report outcomes of the first regional consultation of the ICSN held in Agartala, India (Sept 5-7, 2016), which included discussions from cancer screening programmes from Denmark, the Netherlands, USA, and Bangladesh. Cumulatively, breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancer account for more than 70% of cancers in women in India. Distinct differences in the clinical presentation of women with cancer suggest underlying differences in cancer biology and genetics. The peak age of onset of breast and ovarian cancer appears to be a decade earlier in India (age 45-50 years) than in high-income countries (age >60 years). Understanding these differences through research to develop diagnosis, screening, prevention, and treatment frameworks that ar e specific to the Indian population are critical and essential to improving women's health in India. Since the sequencing of the human genome in 2001, applications of advanced technologies, such as massively parallel sequencing, have transformed the understanding of the genetic and environmental drivers of cancer. How can advanced technologies be harnessed to provide health-care solutions at a scale and to a budget suitable for a country of 1·2 billion people? What research programmes are necessary to answer questions specific to India, and to build capacity for innovative solutions using these technologies? In order to answer these questions, we convened a workshop with key stakeholders to address these issues. Background: India accounts for a quarter of the world cervical cancer burden. Cervical cancer is highly preventable. However, low level of participating women in screening is one of the major issues. The aim of this work was to study the factors that influence women to participate in cervical cancer screening by providing menstrual pads for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. Methods: Menstrual clothes were collected from two different populations from the rural areas of Maharashtra state for HPV testing to screen for cervical cancer. For this study, out of 945 participated women, 557 (58.9%) provided their menstrual pads. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: The probability of providing the menstrual pads was high among the women who were highly educated compared to those with less education (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.0–1.9), having mobile phone facilities as compared to those with no mobile phones (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.0–2.0), who were using new cloths as menstrual pads compared to those who did not use the same (OR: 8.5; 95% CI: 5.0–14.3), who did not have tobacco habit as compared to those who had tobacco habit (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.1–1.9) and in the village where health worker was stationed as compared to the village where health worker was not stationed (OR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.4–2.5). Conclusion: Factors including health worker availability, using mobile phones for communication and high education level facilitate women’s participation. Background & Objectives: In India, the current treatment modalities of systemic chemotherapy and focal treatment have contributed significantly to disability limitation and patient survival. There is also potential for developing targeted molecular therapies. However, side effects of retinoblastoma surgery, radiation therapy may include some complex conditions. We have subtle yet promising examples to manage all such complications effectively through Ayurveda. In this study, the Ayurvedic approach mainly concentrates on preventing the progression of the disease. The present protocol for the treatment is applicable at conservative tumor destructive therapy phase before enucleation and palliative therapy and/or complementary therapy along with chemotherapy and radiation. The purpose of the study is to propose a non-surgical, non-invasive conservative approach for the management of the disease after thorough research work; need to be further analysed and clinically evaluated before recommendation. Background: Rates of cervical and oral cancer in India are unacceptably high. Survival from these cancers is poor, largely due to late presentation and a lack of early diagnosis and screening programmes. Mobile Health ('mHealth') shows promise as a means of supporting screening activity, particularly in rural and remote communities where the required information infrastructure is lacking.Methods: We developed a mHealth prototype and ran training sessions in its use. We then implemented our mHealth-supported screening intervention in 3 sites serving poor, low-health-literacy communities: RUHSA (where cervical screening programmes were already established), Mungeli (Chhattisgarh) and Padhar (Madhya Pradesh). Screening was delivered by community health workers (CHWs - 10 from RUHSA, 8 from Mungeli and 7 from Padhar), supported by nurses (2 in Mungeli and Padhar, 5 in RUHSA): cervical screening was by VIA; oral cancer screening was by mouth inspection with illumination. Our evaluation comprised an analysis of uptake in response to screening and follow-up invitations, complemented by qualitative data from 8 key informant interviews and 2 focus groups.Results: 8686 people were screened through the mHealth intervention - the majority (98%) for oral cancer. Positivity rates were 28% for cervical screening (of whom 37% attended for follow-up) and 5% for oral cancer screening (of whom 31% attended for follow-up). The mHealth prototype was very acceptable to CHWs, who felt it made the task of screening more reliable. A number of barriers to screening and follow-up in test-positive individuals were identified. Use of the mHealth prototype has had a positive effect on the social standing of the CHWs delivering the interventions.Conclusions: mHealth approaches can support cancer screening in poor rural communities with low levels of health literacy. However, they are not sufficient to overcome the range of social, cultural and financial barriers to screening and follow-up. Approaches which combine mHealth with extensive community education, tailored to levels of health literacy in the target population, and well-defined diagnostic and treatment pathways are the most likely to achieve a good response in these communities. Aims The aim of this study was to describe and discuss the recruitment strategies used in a research study of cervical cancer screening among South Asian women, the challenges encountered and the lessons learnt from the experience. Background Ethnic minority populations face different barriers to participating in research studies. Strategies have been developed to recruit this population to health-related research in Western countries, but there is little information about such research in the Asian region. Design Discussion paper. Data sources The discussion is based on our previous experience. The source of this experience is the recruitment strategies used, their results and the challenges encountered during the process. Implications for nursing Culturally, relevant strategies and maintaining good relationships with stakeholders improved participant recruitment. Familiarity with South Asians' traditional calendar - when cultural and religious festivals are held every year - would aid the setting up of appropriate schedules for participant recruitment, either before or after the periods when they cannot be reached, such as Ramadan. South Asian women are often busy with childcare and housework. This is their major responsibility in the family and any failure to fulfil such duties is a source of stress and may foster feelings of guilt. A better understanding of their daily routines is therefore important. Such information enables the establishment of daily meeting schedules to increase the success rate of recruitment. Conclusion Recruitment is a tedious process, but appropriate planning and taking account of cultural and religious practices and daily schedules will help to improve its rate of success. Oral, cervical and breast cancers, which are either preventable and/or amenable to early detection and treatment, are the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in India. In this paper, we describe implementation science research priorities to catalyze the prevention and control of these cancers in India. Research priorities were organized using a framework based on the implementation science literature and the World Health Organization's definition of health systems. They addressed both community-level as well as health systems-level issues. Community-level or "pull" priorities included the need to identify effective strategies to raise public awareness and understanding of cancer prevention, monitor knowledge levels, and address fear and stigma. Health systems-level or "push" and "infrastructure" priorities included dissemination of evidence- based practices, testing of point-of-care technologies for screening and diagnosis, identification of appropriate service delivery and financing models, and assessment of strategies to enhance the health workforce. Given the extent of available evidence, it is critical that cancer prevention and treatment efforts in India are accelerated. Implementation science research can generate critical insights and evidence to inform this acceleration.

Objectives: We aim to describe the history of iodine testing of the cervix and identify areas where further work is required.Study Design: We conducted a search of PubMed and Google Scholar. Full article texts were reviewed. Reference lists were screened for additional articles and books. 37 basic articles in journals including ones written in German and three basic articles in books were identified.Results: Glycogen staining of the ectocervical squamous epithelium with iodine goes back to Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915). Walter Schiller (1887-1960) examined nearly 200 different dyes and found that vital staining of the cervical squamous epithelium was best achieved with Lugol's iodine solution, which was indicated by Jean Guillaume Lugol (1786-1851) for disinfection of the vagina. In 1928 W. Lahm observed that the glycogen content of a squamous epithelium cell decreases as anaplasia increases. From the outset, H. Hinselmann included the iodine test in the minimum requirements for colposcopy. In 1946 H. J. Wespi first mentioned the finding of an "uncharacteristic iodine negative area." The first international colposcopic terminology from Graz in 1975 lists the "iodine light area" among the different colposcopy findings. The IFCPC nomenclatures from Rome 1990, Barcelona 2002, and Rio de Janeiro 2011 have evaluated the iodine test and classified their findings differently. A breakthrough to effective cervical cancer screening in resource-limited settings in Africa, India, and Latin America was achieved with R. Sankaranarayanan's publication on naked-eye visual inspection of the cervix after application of Lugol's iodine.Conclusions: This paper is a step toward a better understanding of what we think and do today with iodine testing and what problems and upcoming tasks will arise in future. INTRODUCTION: Knowledge translation (KT) is a relatively new concept referring to transfers of knowledge into practice in collaboration with multiple sectors that work for the health and wellness of society. Knowledge translation is crucial to identifying and addressing the health needs of immigrants. AIM: To scope the evidence on KT research engaging immigrants in the host country regarding the health and wellness of immigrants. METHODS: This study followed a scoping review approach suggested by Arksey O'Malley. We identified relevant studies from both academic and grey literature using structured criteria, charted the data from the selected studies, collated, summarised and report the results. RESULTS: Analysis of the eligible studies found two types of KT research: integrated KT and end-ofgrant KT. Meeting or discussion with community-level knowledge-users were common KT activities among immigrants, but they were involved in the entire research process only if they were hired as members of research teams. Most KT research among immigrants explored cancer screening and used a community-based participatory action research approach. Barriers and enablers usually came from researchers rather than from the community. There was little practice of evaluation and defined frameworks to conduct KT research among immigrants in Canada. CONCLUSION: This study can help the researchers and other stakeholders of health and wellness of the immigrant population to identify appropriate KT research activities for immigrants and where KT research is required to facilitate the transfer of research knowledge into action. Background: In July 2022, self‐collection became universally available as part of Australia's National Cervical Screening Program. This change aims to address screening inequities experienced among underscreened populations, including women of Indian descent. This study explored experiences of cervical screening, alongside the acceptability of self‐collection, among women of Indian descent living in Victoria, Australia. We also aimed to articulate the informational needs to promote self‐collection among this population. Methods: Five focus group discussions with 39 women living in Victoria were conducted in English (n = 3) and Punjabi (n = 2). Transcripts were thematically analysed, as informed by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. Results: Women were motivated by the choice to self‐collect, perceiving the ability to maintain modesty and greater autonomy as key enablers. Healthcare practitioners were seen as central in supporting patient‐centred models of care. Perceived barriers to self‐collection included concerns around its accuracy and women's confidence in collecting their own sample. Widespread dissemination of culturally tailored promotion strategies communicating concepts such as 'privacy' and 'accuracy' were suggested by women to promote self‐collection. Conclusion: Self‐collection was highly acceptable among women of Indian descent, particularly when assured of its accuracy, and sociocultural norms and previous screening experiences are considered. This study highlights the huge potential that self‐collection can play in increasing equity in Australia's cervical screening programme. Background: The majority of women in rural India have poor or no access to cervical cancer screening services, although one-quarter of all cervical cancers in the world occur there. Several large trials have proven the efficacy of low-tech cervical cancer screening methods in the Indian context but none have documented the necessary components and processes of implementing this evidence in a low-resource setting., Methods: This paper discusses a feasible model of implementation of cervical cancer screening programme in low-resource settings developed through a pilot research project carried out in rural Tamilnadu, India. The programme used visual inspection of cervix after acetic acid application (VIA) as a screening tool, nurses in the primary care centres as the primary screeners and peer educators within Self-Help Women groups to raise community awareness., Results: The uptake of screening was initially low despite the access to a screening programme. However, the programme witnessed an incremental increase in the number of women accessing screening with increasing community awareness., Conclusions: The investigators recommend 4 key components to programme implementation in low-resource setting: 1) Evidence-based, cost-effective test and treatment available within the reach of the community; 2) Appropriate referral pathways; 3) Skilled health workers and necessary equipment; and 4) Optimisation of health literacy, beliefs, attitudes of the community.

Cervical cancer remains the most frequent cancer in women from the developing world. More than 88% of deaths occur in low-income countries, and it is predicted to climb to 91.5% by 2030. Although Pap-based screening programmes have shown to be effective in reducing the disease burden in high-resource countries, implementation and sustention of cytology-based programmes is quite challenging in low-resource settings. The present paper reviews evidence-based alternatives of screening methods, triaging algorithm, treatment of cervical precancerous lesions, and age-group at screening appropriate for low-income countries. Evidence shows that visual inspection methods using diluted acid acetic or Lugol's iodine, and HPV-DNA testing are more sensitive tests than the Pap-smear screening test. Visual inspection allows an immediate result and, when appropriate, may be immediately followed by cryotherapy, the so called "screen-and-treat" approach, achieved in a single visit, by trained nurses and midwives. Examples of cervical cancer prevention programmes in India and selected low-income countries are given.

Simple Summary: The early detection of oral cancer is essential for improving patient outcomes. A conventional oral examination by specialists is the clinical standard for detecting oral lesions. However, many high-risk individuals in middle- and low-income countries lack access to specialists. Therefore, there is a need to develop an easy-to-use, non-invasive oral screening tool that enhances the existing system for detecting precancerous lesions. This study explores artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques to identify precancerous lesions using photographic images of oral cavities in the Indian population. The high performance of deep learning models suggests that an AI-based solution can be deployed for community screening programs in low-resource settings after further improvement and validation. The prevalence of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral cancer is surging in low- and middle-income countries. A lack of resources for population screening in remote locations delays the detection of these lesions in the early stages and contributes to higher mortality and a poor quality of life. Digital imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) are promising tools for cancer screening. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of AI-based techniques for detecting OPMDs in the Indian population using photographic images of oral cavities captured using a smartphone. A dataset comprising 1120 suspicious and 1058 non-suspicious oral cavity photographic images taken by trained front-line healthcare workers (FHWs) was used for evaluating the performance of different deep learning models based on convolution (DenseNets) and Transformer (Swin) architectures. The best-performing model was also tested on an additional independent test set comprising 440 photographic images taken by untrained FHWs (set I). DenseNet201 and Swin Transformer (base) models show high classification performance with an F1-score of 0.84 (CI 0.79–0.89) and 0.83 (CI 0.78–0.88) on the internal test set, respectively. However, the performance of models decreases on test set I, which has considerable variation in the image quality, with the best F1-score of 0.73 (CI 0.67–0.78) obtained using DenseNet201. The proposed AI model has the potential to identify suspicious and non-suspicious oral lesions using photographic images. Background: Cervical cancer is characterized by the unusual growth of cells in the cervix. It accounts for about 25% of deaths in India; due to lack of knowledge, poor practice, and a negative attitude, diagnosis tends to arise at later stages of the disease. The main objective of our study was to evaluate cervical cancer knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) and to assess the relationship between educational status with knowledge and attitude toward cervical cancer. Method: An online survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted among Indian women using a self-generated questionnaire for a period of six months. Cervical cancer awareness measure (C-CAM) was used to assess the knowledge. We recruited a total of 660 women aged 18 years and above. Results: The majority of the participants had poor knowledge, strong positive attitudes, and poor practice. Among them, only 86 women were found to be vaccinated for HPV. A statistically significant association was found between the level of KAP of cervical cancer (P < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between KAP of cervical cancer. Conclusion: Our study concluded that the level of awareness regarding the screening techniques and preventive measures for cervical cancer is very low. Educational status had a significant association with KAP of cervical cancer. Hence, these outcomes suggest the need for more effective awareness-boosting programmes about cervical cancer screening. Background: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of deaths due to cancer among women in India. This study assesses the prevalence of cervical cancer screening among women in the 30 to 49 years age-group and its relation to demographic, social and economic factors. The equity in the prevalence of screening is studied with respect to the women's household wealth. Methods: Data from the fifth National Family Health Survey are analyzed. The adjusted odds ratio is used to assess the prevalence of screening. The Concentration Index (CIX) and the Slope Index of Inequality (SII) are analyzed to assess the inequality. Results: The average national prevalence of cervical cancer screening is found to be 1.97% (95% C.I, 1.8–2.1), ranging from 0.2% in West Bengal and Assam to 10.1% in Tamil Nadu. Screening is significantly more prevalent among the following demographics: educated, higher age group, Christian, scheduled caste, Government health insurance coverage, and high household wealth. Significantly lower prevalence is found among Muslim women, women from scheduled tribes, general category castes, non-Government health insurance coverage, high parity, and those who use oral contraceptive pills and tobacco. Marital status, place of residence, age at first sexual activity, and IUD usage are not significant influencers. At the national level, CIX (0.22 (95% C.I, 0.20–0.24)) and SII (0.018 (95% C.I, 0.015–0.020)) indicate significantly higher prevalence of screening among women from the wealthier quintiles. Significantly higher screening prevalence among wealthier quintiles in the North-East (0.1), West (0.21) and Southern (0.05) regions and among the poor quintiles in the Central (-0.05) region. Equiplot analysis shows a "top inequality pattern" in the North, North-East and Eastern regions, with overall low performance where the rich alone manage to avail screening. The Southern region exhibits an overall progress in screening prevalence with the exception of the poorest quintile, which is left behind. Pro-poor inequality exists in the Central region, with significantly higher prevalence of screening among poor. Conclusion: The prevalence of cervical cancer screening is very low (2%) in India. Background: While cervical cancer deaths have declined steeply in high-income countries due to the widespread use of the Papanicolaou test (Pap test), the same trend has not emerged in low or middle-income countries (LMICs). Access to screening in LMICs like India is limited due to barriers such as limited healthcare infrastructures, lack of sexual health education, and stigma demarcating sexually transmitted infections (STIs). HPV self-sampling (HPV-SS), a woman–centered and at-home method for screening, can be utilized as a unique screening tool to overcome some of these barriers. Our study examined the effectiveness of HPV-SS, supported by family-centred arts-based sexual health literacy on the uptake of cervical cancer screening among hard-to-reach women in rural and remote areas in India. Methods: Our community-based mixed methods pilot study recruited 240 participants (120 women and 120 male partners or family members) through female Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) across 3 Indian villages of Shirgoan, Khodala, and Jamsar in Palghar district. Inclusion criteria included women ages 30–69 who were under or never screened (UNS) and their male partners/family members aged 18 or over. Knowledge and attitudes about cervical cancer and screening and their perceived stigma surrounding STI were assessed using validated scales prior to and after attending a 2-hour arts-based sexual health education (SHE). In addition, participants' uptake of cervical cancer screening was assessed after attendance in SHE. Findings: Results revealed significant improvement in knowledge and attitudes about cervical cancer and screening, and a reduction in the STI stigma after participation in SHE sessions (overall mean difference in Knowledge: z = 6.1 ± 2.4, P < 0.001; attitudes about Pap-test and VIA: z = 2.2 ± 8.4, P < 0.001 and z = 2.9 ± 8.2, P < 0.001; STI stigma: z = 2.8 ± 12.4, P < 0.001). 118 out of 120 female participants chose to be screened and 115 opted for HPV-SS. Conclusions: The implementation of HPV-SS coupled with family-centered arts-based and culturally appropriate SHE is highly promising in promoting cervical cancer screening among hard-to-reach women. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sonomammography as a screening test for breast carcinoma at B.K. L. Walawalkar Rural Medical College & Hospital in Maharashtra, India. The specific objectives were to assess the correlation between sonomammographic findings and histopathology results, analyze the distribution of patients based on echogenicity and orientation, and determine the mean age of the study population. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study design was employed, and the study was conducted for one year. The study population consisted of patients referred for diagnostic workup and screening of breast cancer. Inclusion criteria encompassed an age range of 14-75 years and the absence of breast lump or asymptomatic breast swelling, while exclusion criteria included age below 14 years or above 75 years and unwillingness to undergo sonomammography. The sample size was determined based on the desired error level, and a total of 456 participants were included. Sonomammographic findings were compared with histopathology reports, and statistical analysis was performed using Pearson Chi-Square tests. Results: The mean age of the study population was 44.54 years (SD = 10.53). Analysis of echogenicity distribution revealed a higher number of benign cases (387) compared to malignant cases (69), with anechoic lesions being the most common. The correlation between echogenicity and the benign or malignant nature of breast lesions was significant (Pearson Chi-Square = 170.654, p < 0.01). Orientation analysis indicated a significant correlation between nonparallel orientation and malignant cases, while parallel orientation was more frequently associated with benign lesions (Pearson Chi-Square = 142.087, p < 0.01). The correlation between sonomammography findings and histopathology results was also significant (Pearson Chi-Square = 211.163, p < 0.01), with a strong positive correlation coefficient of 0.680. Conclusion: The findings of this study support the efficacy of sonomammography as a screening test for breast carcinoma. Sonomammography demonstrated significant correlations with histopathology results, indicating its accuracy in detecting and characterizing breast lesions. Echogenicity and orientation were found to be valuable indicators for distinguishing between benign and malignant cases. The mean age of the study population was 44.54 years. We are reporting (a) updated incidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) among women who did not have colposcopic or histopathological disease at baseline and (b) disease outcomes among women treated for CIN and their follow‐up HPV status; in a cohort of women living with HIV (WHIV). The median overall follow‐up was 3.5 years (IQR 2.8‐4.3). The incidence of any CIN and that of CIN 2 or worse disease was 16.7 and 7.0 per 1000 person‐years of observation (PYO), respectively. Compared with women who were HPV negative at baseline, women who cleared HPV infection had 23.95 times increased risk of incident CIN 2 or worse lesions (95% CI 2.40‐661.07). Women with persistent HPV infection had 138.18 times increased risk of CIN 2 or worse lesions (95% CI 20.30‐3300.22). Complete disease regression was observed in 65.6% of the HPV positive women with high‐grade CIN and were treated with thermal ablation but HPV persistence was seen in 44.8% of those with high‐grade disease. Among those who did not have any disease at baseline and were also HPV negative, about 87% (95% CI 83.79‐89.48) women remained HPV negative during consecutive HPV test/s with the median interval of 3.5 years. Long‐term surveillance of WHIV treated for any CIN is necessary for the prevention of cervical cancer among them. Our study provides an early indication that the currently recommended screening interval of 3 to 5 years among WHIV may be extended to at least 5 years among HPV negative women. About 87% cervical cancer deaths occur in less developed regions. The estimation of new cancer cases, by major states of India, reveals that burden is very high, in those states which are highly populous. Nearly 41.3% of cancers seen in Indian females are accounted by cancer of cervix. Cervical cancer is a huge trouble in most agricultural nations, where it is a significant reason for mortality and morbidity among females. Several factors are attributed to the widespread incidence of cancer, the precise etiology of which remains unclear. Awareness of cancer should be encouraged in its prevention, detection, and treatment. Indian women face a 2.5% cumulative life me risk and 1.4% cumulative death risk from cervical cancer, at any given time. Nearly 6.6% of women in the general popular on are estimated to harbor cervical HPV infection. Early detection and treatment via screening can prevent up to 80% of cervical cancers in developed countries, where efficient screening programs are in place. Introduction: In India, smokeless tobacco (SLT) is a predominant form of tobacco used among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Despite SLT being a risk factor for oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), no prior studies have quantified the association of OPMDs with SLT use among PLHIV. This limits the planning of preventive and control strategies for oral cancer among PLHIV, who are at higher risk for the disease. Methods: We enrolled 601 PLHIV and 633 HIV-uninfected individuals in an oral cancer screening study at BJ Government Medical College, Pune, India. Oral cavity images were collected using an m-Health application and reviewed by three clinicians. Participants with two clinician positive diagnoses were deemed to have suspected OPMDs. Prevalence ratios (PRs) were used to quantify the association between suspected OPMDs and SLT use among PLHIV. PRs for current SLT users, across HIV status and use duration were also estimated. Corrected PRs were obtained by modifying the maximum likelihood estimation. Models were adjusted for age, smoking, alcohol use and CD4 counts. Results: Of those enrolled, 61% were men, median age was 36 years (IQR: 28–44), and 33% currently use SLT. Proportion of current SLT users was similar across PLHIV and HIV-uninfected groups but use duration for current SLT use was higher among PLHIV(p<0.05). Among PLHIV, current SLT users had a 5-times (95% CI:3.1–7.0) higher prevalence of suspected OPMDs, compared to non-users. Relative to HIV uninfected individuals with the same SLT use duration, significant associations with suspected OPMDs were seen for PLHIV with<10 use years (PR: 3.5, 95% CI: 1.5–8.1) but not for PLHIV with≥10 use years (PR: 1.3, 95% CI: 0.9–1.8). Conclusion: PLHIV that are current SLT users are at high risk of OPMDs and potentially oral cancer. Background: Low participation in screening and poor follow-up are major challenges in implementing population based screening in developing countries. Determinants of participation in a community-based organized cervical cancer screening program are discussed here. Objectives: The objectives were to study factors determining compliance of women for cervical cancer screening in an urban low socioeconomic setting. Methodology: Community-based service program was conducted for screening uterine cervix cancers with a visual inspection of the cervix on the application of 5% acetic acid by trained primary health workers. The process involved the selection of clusters, household surveys, health education, and screening of eligible women for uterine cervix cancer. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify determinants of participation in cervical cancer screening. Results: A total of 138,383 population were surveyed, of which 21,422 eligible women were contacted and 16,424 (82.50%) complied for screening. According to the results of univariate and multivariate analysis, women belonging to the age group of 30–39 (80.69%), literate women with school level or education up to Senior College (78.97% and 80.86%) (odds ratio [OR], 1.323; P ≤ 0.001) and (OR, 1.402; P ≤ 0.001), belonging to Hindu religion (77.20%), speaking Marathi (77.07%), and with a family history of cancer (81.93%) had higher participation for screening, while women belonging to the Muslim community (73.95%) (OR, 0.743; P ≤ 0.001), speaking other than Marathi and Hindi language (73%) (OR, 0.872; P = 0.017), illiterate women (70.71%), and graduate women (70.78%) had lower participation. Background: Cervical cancer represents a very high burden of disease, especially in Low- and Middle-income economies. Screening is a recommended prevention method in resource-poor settings. Cervical cancer screening (CCS) uptake is influenced by various psycho-social factors, most of which are included in behavioural models. Unlike demographic characteristics, these factors are modifiable. While few studies have compared these models in terms of their capacity to predict health behaviour, this study considers three health behaviour theories to assess and compare the predictors of CCS behaviour and intention.Methods: A survey was conducted among 607 sexually active women in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Data was collected regarding socio-demographic factors, health literacy, knowledge on CCS, and the socio-cognitive factors related to CCS that are represented in the Health Belief Model (HBM), Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and Theory of Care-Seeking Behaviour (TCSB). Logistic regression analyses tested to what extent each of the theoretical models explained cervical cancer screening (CCS) intention and regular screening behaviour, comparing the variance explained by each of the models.Results: CCS intention was best explained by the TPB, followed by the HBM. Of the constructs included in these models, positive attitude towards the screening procedure and perceived benefits contributed most significantly to screening intention, followed by fear, anxiety or embarrassment related to the disease or screening procedure, and context specific barriers.Conclusion: Health behavioural models such as the TPB and HBM can help to identify the main socio-cognitive factors explaining the intention of women to participate in CCS. As such, they can inform interventions to target specific determinants of screening intention and behaviour, and enhance their effectiveness by addressing women's screening attitude, perceived benefits, and emotions as well as reducing context specific barriers to screening. Cancer statistics in 2020 reveals that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in India. One in 28 women is likely to develop breast cancer during their lifetime. The mortality rate is 1.6 to 1.7 times higher than maternal mortality rates. According to the US statistics, about 42,170 women in the US are expected to die in 2020 from breast cancer. The chance of survival can be increased through early and accurate diagnosis of cancer. The pathologists manually analyze the histopathology images using high-resolution microscopes to detect the mitotic cells. This is a time-consuming process because there is a minute difference between the normal and mitotic cells. To overcome these challenges, an automatic analysis and detection of breast cancer by using histopathology images play a vital role in prognosis. Earlier researchers used conventional image processing techniques for the detection of mitotic cells. These methods were found to be producing results with low accuracy and time-consuming. Therefore, several deep learning techniques were adopted by researchers to increase the accuracy and minimize the time. The hybrid deep learning model is proposed for selecting abstract features from the histopathology images. In the proposed approach, we have concatenated two different CNN architectures into a single model for effective classification of mitotic cells. Convolution neural network (CNN) automatically detects efficient features without human intervention and classifies cancerous and non-cancerous images using a hybrid fully connected network. It is a computationally efficient, very powerful, and efficient model for performing automatic feature extraction. It detects different phenotypic signatures of nuclei. In order to enhance the accuracy and computational efficiency, the histopathology images are preprocessed, segmented, and feature extracted through CNN and fed into a hybrid CNN for classification. The hybrid CNN is obtained by concatenating two CNN models; together, this is called model leveraging. Model averaging can be improved by weighting the contributions of each sub-model to the combined prediction by the expected performance of the sub-model. The proposed hybrid CNN architecture with data preprocessing with median filter and Otsu-based segmentation technique is trained using 50,000 images and tested using 50,000 images. Background: A screening program for cervical cancer was established in 2011 in Tamil Nadu. Since the inception of the program, coverage, and dropout of screening has not been analyzed. We conducted a study to describe the referral mechanism in the cervical cancer screening program implemented in Tamil Nadu, to estimate the level of adherence to the referral process by the beneficiaries, and to identify strengths and weaknesses related to the referral mechanism in the program.Methods: ">This descriptive study was conducted during 2015-2016 in the Tiruchirappalli administrative district of Tamil Nadu. All women aged 30 years and above, who were screened in public health facilities, were the participants. Using a structured form, we collected the data maintained in the registers at the district health administration. We estimated the screening coverage, follow-up evaluation, and dropout rates at different stages of the referral mechanism. We used SPSS and Epi Info software for analysis.Results: Coverage of cervical cancer screening was 4,838(41.6%). We estimated 4,838(41.6%) of screened positives were lost to follow-up for a colposcopy examination. Biopsy samples were obtained from 3425(84%) of those who required a biopsy. Cervical cancer was diagnosed in 159(4.6%) and precancerous lesions in 528(15.4%) women.Conclusion: More than half of the target population was screened in public health facilities. The dropout rate was less than half of those screened at the colposcopy evaluation level. The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR) has been conducting online cancer screening training certificate courses since 2017. Thereafter, multiple cohorts have been trained successfully in cancer screening using the Extensions for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) platform. A 14-week course was designed for various cadres of healthcare professionals (HCP), through which they were trained in cancer screening and their roles and responsibilities in implementing the population-based cancer screening, as per the operational framework released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Then, a contact program was held to upskill the participants in cancer screening techniques. Eight cohorts have been successfully trained using the hybrid model of online training and hands-on training. Cancer screening conducted utilizing the hybrid model, consisting of the online ECHO model, followed by hands-on training is a suitable training model to train large cohorts, such as the one in populous countries like India. Background: Breast cancer incidence rates are increasing in developing countries including India. With 1.3 million new cases of cancer been diagnosed annually, breast cancer is the most common women's cancer in India. India's National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) data 2015-2016 shows that only 9.8% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 had ever undergone breast examination (BE). Further, access to screening and treatment is unequally distributed, with inequalities by socio-economic status. It is unclear, however, if socio-economic inequalities in breast examination are similar across population subgroups.Methods: We compared BE coverage in population sub-groups categorised by place of residence, religion, caste/tribal groups, education levels, age, marital status, and employment status in their intersection with economic status in India. We analysed data for 699,686 women aged 15-49 using the NFHS-4 data set conducted during 2015-2016. Descriptive (mean, standard errors, and confidence intervals) of women undergoing BE disaggregated by dimensions of inequality (education, caste/tribal groups, religion, place of residence) and their intersections with wealth were computed with national weights using STATA 12. Chi-square tests were performed to assess the association between socio-demographic factors and breast screening. Additionally, the World Health Organisation's Health Equity Assessment Toolkit Plus was used to compute summary measures of inequality: Slope index for inequality (SII) and Relative Concentration Indices (RCI) for each intersecting dimension.Results: BE coverage was concentrated among wealthier groups regardless of other intersecting population subgroups. Wealth-related inequalities in BE coverage were most pronounced among Christians (SII; 20.6, 95% CI: 18.5-22.7), married (SII; 14.1, 95% CI: 13.8-14.4), employed (SII: 14.6, 95%CI: 13.9, 15.3), and rural women (SII; 10.8, 95% CI: 10.5-11.1). Overall, relative summary measures (RCI) were consistent with our absolute summary measures (SII).Conclusions: Breast examination coverage in India is concentrated among wealthier populations across population groups defined by place of residence, religion, age, employment, and marital status. Aim The aim of the study is to assess the effectiveness of low dose CT scan (LDCT) to pick up nodules and carcinomas in smokers in India. Methods A retrospective study of 350 smokers scanned with LDCT was performed in a private practice center in Mumbai, India. Their demographic profile, smoking history in pack-years, lung nodules, and associated findings/superimposed complications were recorded and analyzed. The nodules were assigned the appropriate Lung-RADS category and results of the patients undergoing biopsy were recorded. Results Of the 350 smokers, 15 (4%) were women. The mean age was 61 years (32–90 years) with a mean smoking history of 22 pack-years (1–160 pack-years). Lung nodules were found in 335 (93%) smokers, with Lung-RADS category 1 nodules seen in 117 (36%), category 2 in 133 (41%), category 3 in 29 (9%), and category 4 in 46 (14%) of positive scans. Seven of the category 4 patients who underwent biopsy showed carcinoma, with a mean smoking history of 30 pack years. Superimposed interstitial lung disease, airways diseases, and infections were also seen in the scans and recorded. Discussion It has been proven in the Western world that screening for lung cancer with LDCT saves lives with early pick-up of malignant nodules. This pilot study from India, shows that even in a tuberculosis endemic country, LDCT picks up malignant lung nodules early and saves lives. Conclusion Smokers with a more than 20 pack years history have a higher incidence of lung nodules, which may represent carcinoma, in a tuberculosis endemic country like India, as has been proven in other countries in the Western world. Background: Cervical cancer is largely preventable. The study was aimed to find out the attributes of screening and vaccination for cervical cancer among female school teachers of Kota, Rajasthan, India. Methods: It was an observational study, cross-sectional in design conducted among female school teachers of Kota, Rajasthan, India using a predesigned structured questionnaire administered by Google Form during the months of March to May, 2020. In total, 397 schoolteachers from 18 different schools of Kota participated in our survey. Results: Among the study subjects, 33 (8.3%) had ever undergone screening for cervical cancer, whereas only 12 (3.0%) had taken vaccine against it. In multivariable logistic regression analysis; age (>40 years) [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 5.7 (2.0-15.8)], correct knowledge regarding frequency of screening (yes) [AOR: 6.0 (2.4-15.5)], positive attitude for the disease (yes) [AOR:3.0 (1.1-8.0)] and gynaecologist consultation behaviour (periodic) [AOR: 1.4 (1.1-8.6)] were significant attributes of ever undergoing screening for cervical cancer. On the other hand, themultivariable significant attributes of vaccination were age (≤40 years) [AOR: 7.6 (1.5-38.9)]and positive attitude for the disease (yes) [AOR: 6.4 (1.1-38.2)]. Conclusion: Acceptance of screening and vaccination for cervical cancer among the study subjects was found to be quite low. Policymakers should more actively involve school teachers in generating awareness and in raising the demand for cervical cancer screening and vaccination in their native communities to curb the disease in the country. Introduction and background: Cervical cancer is one of the leading responsible condition for causing high death rate among women after breast cancer. It is preventable and curable disorder, but the prevalence of cervical cancer remaining too high in India. Majority of women do not aware of cervical screening procedures. Maharashtra is standing in second position in possessing more number of cervical cancer cases. Methodology: A quasi-experimental pretest and post research design was used to execute the study. This study was conducted in selected hospitals of PCMC. The samples were the women age group between 30-60 years attending Gynec OPD. The systemic random sampling techniques was used to select the samples. Total sample size was 501. A self-administered tool was administered to find the reasons for participation and nonparticipation in cervical screening. Tool and content validity was done. The reliability of the tool was done r value is = 0.88. The study proposal has been approved by the Ethical Committee, MGM Institute of Health Sciences, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai. Permission has been taken from the concerned authority of the selected urban health care centers for data collection. The content was prepared on prevention and early detection of cervical screening in the form of video and modules in their regional languages. Results: Majority of participants among three experimental groups, about 38.32 % in verbal group, 41.91% in written group and 40.71 % in video group have responded that they could not take part in the cervical screening programme as they are very embarrassed with cervical screening procedure. While others had responded that, I am healthy I do not have to go for this test, some women said, I have only one sexual partner so I don't require this test. A few women have assumed that the test is very expensive, thinking that not required the Pap test as no symptoms of cancer observed and other have stated that don't know the frequency of test. Conclusion: A key strategy to improve the attendance of the women for cervical screening is to spread the awareness on prevention and early detection of cervical cancer by using various educational methods. Background: Online courses have broken the boundaries in imparting knowledge. While in western countries e-learning in medical education is well accepted, it is still an upcoming field in low- and middle-income countries like India. Attrition is a major threat to online courses world-wide. The objective of this article is to share the experiences in conducting online cancer screening courses, reasons for attrition and ways to improve retention. Methods: Online training program in preventive oncology for medical professionals is being conducted since 2017, which is 14-week long with weekly one-hour sessions and specific curriculum for healthcare professionals. Since the retention of participants was a major challenge in all the courses, a short online survey was conducted to identify the reason behind quitting the course and suggestions to improve retention. The data was analyzed in November 2019. Results: Among 614 enrolments, 26% (159/614) refused to attend the course and only 55% (252/455) completed the course successfully. Among the attendees 52% (238/455) were females, 71% (325/455) were from the public sector and 71% (324/455) were non-specialists. The attrition was high among non-specialists 49% (160/324), male participants 57% (124/217) and public sector doctors 52% (170/325). The main reasons for quitting the course were high workload in the health facilities 75% (52/69) and poor internet connectivity 12% (8/69). Conclusion: The internet connectivity should be strengthened in all the healthcare centers to facilitate e-learning. More than two thirds of breast cancers in developing countries are diagnosed at a late stage. Awareness-based screening programmes, integrated into existing infrastructure, are the way forward for cancer control in these countries. We aim to describe a structured screening programme established in an urban community in Mumbai, India. We conducted a breast cancer awareness survey in this urban community covered by employees' health scheme. A brochure was designed to inform women about early signs of breast cancer and was posted for the women in the community. We described early signs and symptoms of breast cancer and encouraged the women to seek healthcare in the breast clinics specifically designed for early referral. A multidisciplinary team was established for further in-house care at the community hospital. A database of the detected cancers was maintained. A total of 22,500 brochures were sent in each round of mailing. Four such rounds were conducted in 3 years. A total of 3547 women reported for clinical breast examination (CBE) for various breast complaints or screening. Of these women, 53% were asymptomatic. CBE was normal in 2843 women, and 767 (21%) women were referred for further investigations. Eighty-three breast cancers were detected with 72% having early (stage I-II) cancers. Our exploratory study revealed that awareness-based screening programmes with organised infrastructure and referral pattern could lead to diagnosing early cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Oral cavity cancers are fourth most common cancers among Indian women. The objectives were to create cancer awareness (CA) and screen tobacco‐using women for oral cavity cancers. Materials and methods: A community‐based CA and screening programme was conducted among women in Mumbai, India. The tobacco‐using women participated in CA and oral cavity screening by oral visual inspection (OVI). All screen‐positive women were referred to nodal hospital and assisted for diagnostic confirmation and treatment completion. Results: Twelve slum clusters comprising of 138,383 population and 13,492 tobacco‐using women have been covered. Among them, 11,895 (88.2%) participated in CA and 11,768 (87.2%) in OVI. A total of 377 (3.2%) women were screened positive, 275 (72.9%) complied with referral and 207 oral precancers [173 leukoplakia, 9 erythroplakia, 3 erythroleukoplakia and 41 sub‐mucus fibrosis (SMF) including 35 women with multiple precancers] and 7 oral cancers were diagnosed. The detection rate of oral precancerous lesions and oral cancers was 17.6 and 0.6 per 1,000 screened women. Thirty‐five women had multiple oral precancerous lesions. The results of multivariate analysis indicate dose–response relationship between tobacco use and risk of oral precancers. Conclusion: Good participation rates (>85%) for cancer awareness and OVI were seen among urban slum women in India. Inequalities between native-born and foreign-born individuals in screening rates for a variety of conditions have been well-documented in literature on immigrant health. A preponderance of this research focuses on the Latin American case and on cancer-specific screening. This study seeks to expand knowledge of such preventative-health screening differences by analyzing screening rates for blood sugar, blood pressure, and serum cholesterol among nine groups overall and (for immigrants) at various stages of US residency. Using nationally representative data from the National Health Interview Survey, we find that immigrants from eight geographic regions receive preventative care at lower rates than US-born Whites and that preventative screening is generally higher after 15 years than during the first 4 years of residency in the United States. Importantly, our data also show that screening patterns and trends vary based on region of origin and outcome.
