This paper contributes a preliminary analysis of the process of agrarian capitalist transition in Arunachal Pradesh, one of the least studied regions of India. Primarily based on information collected through a field survey in eleven villages, the paper seeks to explain the nature and implications of institutional unevenness in the development of capitalism. Institutional diversity is not simply mapped across space, it is also manifested in the simultaneous existence of market and non-market institutions across the means of production within the same village or spatial context. In addition, there is a continuous and complex interaction among these institutions which both shapes and is shaped by this capitalist transition. Primitive accumulation emerges as a continuing characteristic of the on-going agrarian and non-agrarian capitalist transition. Institutional adaptation, continuity and hybridity are as integral to the emergence of the market economy as are the processes of creation of new institutions and demise of others. There is no necessary correspondence between the emerging commercialization of the different productive dimensions of the agrarian economy. These uneven processes are deeply influenced by existing and emerging power relations and by the state. Framed by the Bernstein–Byres debate about the contemporary (ir)relevance of the agrarian question, evidence is presented to justify the conclusion that although the processes at work are far from the classical models of the transition to capitalism, all aspects of the agrarian question remain relevant. The excellent exposures of plentiful Proterozoic granitic bodies in the north‐east Himalaya offer a chance to explore the evolution of continental crust in the Early Proterozoic period. The present comprehensive study from Bomdila area, western Arunachal Pradesh, NE India documents petrogenesis of Palaeoproterozoic Bomdila granite gneiss and metamorphic history of the region using the whole rock and mineral chemistry, and suitable mineral thermobarometry. The gneisses, with quartz, k‐feldspar, plagioclase, and mica mineralogy, are characterized by enrichment in rare earth elements (total REE up to 290 ppm), Rb, Ba, Th, and depletion in mafic elements (Ni, Cr, V, Sc). The gneisses are subalkaline and peraluminous with A/CNK (Al2O3/CaO + Na2O + K2O) > 1.1, indicating S‐type nature of the granites. The gneisses show fractionated REE patterns (LaN/YbN = up to 22) with LREE enrichment and HREE depletion. Geochemical characteristics such as enriched SiO2, Al2O3, alkalis, LREE, high incompatible element ratios (Rb/Sr and Ba/Sr), and depleted mafic contents with noticeable negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.2 – 0.6) suggest an origin of gneisses through high‐temperature (>800°C) shallow crustal melting of a pelitic source similar to the metasedimentary enclaves within the gneisses. Mineral thermobarometric calculations suggest a tightly constrained P–T condition of 7.5–8.6 kbar and 560–590°C for the gneiss and schist from the study area. Almost identical P–T conditions of metamorphism from different lithologies attests that the Bomdila area may have attained an upper amphibolitic facies condition, possibly concomitant to the Himalayan Orogeny. Though rudimentary, temperature estimates from Ti‐in biotite thermometer suggest an increase in metamorphic grade towards the Main Central Thrust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two new species of Henckelia from the Eastern Himalayan state Arunachal Pradesh, India, are described and illustrated. The first, Henckelia dasii Taram, D.Borah, R.Kr.Singh & Tag is allied to H. umbellata Kanthraj & K.N.Nair, the second, H. lallanii Taram, D.Borah, Tag & R.Kr.Singh is close to H. urticifolia (Buch.‐Ham. ex D.Don) A.Dietr. (type species of the former Chirita sect. Chirita). The differences are given in Table 1 and 2, respectively. A key is presented for the 21 Henckelia species presently known from N and NE India. Mustura subhashi, new species, is described from the Dikal River, a north bank tributary of the Brahmaputra drainage in Arunachal Pradesh. It is distinguished from all its congeners by having a colour pattern of 14–23 dark‐greyish black to dark brown irregular bars on a greyish to pale beige body; pre‐dorsal bars thin, numerous, wider than interspaces, weakly contrasted, uniting dorsally at lateral one‐third or midway on flank to form thicker bars, coalescing further at lateral one‐fifth and continuous on dorsum with contralateral bars; bars below dorsal fin exhibiting similar condition but slightly wider than pre‐dorsal bars; post‐dorsal bars thicker than anterior bars, wider than interspaces, sharply contrasted, rarely coalescing on flank; and a short bar along the caudal mid‐line, rarely forming a blotch. Based on re‐examination of the type specimens and additional materials, Mustura dikrongensis is confirmed as a species belonging to Mustura, and M. harkishorei is not sufficiently diagnosed from 'Nemacheilus' corica. The purpose of this study was to determine the taxonomic status of an unidentified enigmatic macaque seen by scientists since the late 1990s in Arunachal Pradesh, India. We surveyed 49 troops of enigmatic macaques in four districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The population studied is from the macaque sinica-group as defined by the reproductive organs. The main species-separating trait in the sinica-group is tail length to head and body length ratio that decreases with latitude and elevation. We gathered data on morphology, pelage descriptions, tail to head and body ratios and tail to hind foot ratios from photos and live animals (43 individuals from 36 areas) within the range of and between the two subspecies of the Assamese macaque ( Macaca assamensis). We compared the data to six western Assamese macaques and studies of Assamese macaques and related species. We found great variability in tail length, pelage color, facial skin color, and facial and hair patterns. The tail/head-body and tail/foot ratios, although varied, supported the hypothesis that these enigmatic forms were part of a population of Assamese macaques found in the gap between the two subspecies ranges and were not a new species as described earlier. Instead, we found evidence that darker pelage, larger body size, and shorter tails occur at higher elevations and latitudes similar to the general trend in the sinica-group's adaptations to colder climates. Thus, the population may be important for its variation, throwing light on the speciation process and how the northern species of Tibetan macaques evolved from an ancestor similar to the Assamese macaques as adaptations to a colder climate.
