The impact of COVID-19 on the Global scale is tremendously drastic. There are several types of research going on across the world simultaneously to understand and overcome this dire pandemic outbreak. This paper is purely a statistical study on a distinct set of datasets regarding COVID-19 in India. The motivation of this study is to provide an insight into the rapid growth of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India. The rapid growth of COVID-19 cases in India started in March 2020. The main objective of this paper is to provide a solid statistical model for the policymaker to handle this kind of pandemic situation in the near future with nonlinear data. In this paper, the data was got from 1st April to 29th November 2020. To come up with a solid statistical model, various nonlinear data such as confirmed COVID-19 cases, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, the total population (state-wise), the total area in km2 (state-wise), and the total rural and urban population count (state-wise) have been analyzed. In this paper, six different Generalized Additive Models (GAM) was identified after a thorough analysis of other researchers' (Xie and Zhu, 2020; Prata et al., 2020) findings. In all perspectives, the results were identified and analyzed. The GAM model regarding total COVID-19 confirmed cases, total population, and the total rural population provides the best average fit of R2 value of 0.934. As the population value is quite high, the author has concise it using logarithm to provide the best p -value of 0.000542 and 0.001407 for a relation between the total number of COVID-19 cases regarding the total population and total rural population respectively. The paper revisits the Porter-Wagner dilemma about the association between environmental management (EM) and firm performance (FP). The context of informal Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) provides an interesting case since they are away from regulatory scrutiny or corporate/social obligations. The study resorts to labor productivity as the measure of FP and EM is represented by the various solid waste management practices (WMPs) adopted by the informal enterprises. Using the latest available cross-sectional data on un-incorporated firms by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 73rd round 2015-16, we found the positive impact of WMPs was higher in the case of more productive firms in the quantile, indicating the relevance of the Porter-Wagner dilemma. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce what affects the firm to diversify. This paper is based on an empirical analysis of a sample of 453 manufacturing companies in India. Jacquemin-Berry Entropy-Index measure has been used to measure diversification; whereas to determine the factors affecting diversification strategy, Panel Tobit Regression Analysis has been applied. The research findings indicate that firm-specific antecedents influence the decision to diversify. Corporate managers should follow a prudent behaviour while adopting strategic planning for the growth of the company. Since the 2000 s the demand for sand has proliferated at the coastal-land interface to fill up the increasing demand straining Blue Economy (BE) activities and provision of water-energy-food resources. Recent studies have revealed that increased sand mining in both coastal and freshwater zones has continued to impact livelihood-ecological systems threatening the provision of livelihood goods and services. These impacts are exacerbated by a lack of comprehensive frameworks to regulate sand mining and trade; creating the need to develop micro and macro-frameworks and guidelines for sustainable sand mining. This paper uses a non-systematic literature review approach to build on this gap to develop an understanding of the resource nexus perspectives and trade-offs due to sand mining. The paper proposes a novel framework based on the Ecosystem Service Assessment advanced from the review of the literature to guide risk assessments toward more sustainable sand mining. In order to add evidence, the paper analyses in-depth the state of Kerala - one of India's coastal states that has experienced unprecedented rates of sand mining since the 1990 s especially along the Chavara coast albeit with less research on the intersectionality of mining on the resource nexus. Both the framework and our case study highlight how sand mining stresses local ecosystems and livelihoods thus increasing vulnerability to both human and environmental impacts. The paper brings to the fore seven (7) key steps that local institutions can use to guide sustainable sand mining and build integrated governance systems that promote interaction among natural capitals in a given area and livelihood considerations. The article further documents that the use of coherent guidelines and the framework can help in amalgamating the various actors in a given system that can guide local participation in local resource management and the development of cooperative agreements for the sustainable utilization of resources among coastal communities. In this paper, we suggest how India can become atmanirbhar (i.e. self-reliant) in development of green energy technologies- solar, battery storage and green hydrogen, given its stated commitments in clean energy. First, we introduce a generalized policy design – a set of ten policy measures: seven necessary and three sufficient- with the former being on the supply side and the latter on the demand side. The paper argues that while the ideal policy mix would be technology dependent, based on technology maturity and the strategic positioning of the country, it should draw both from supply side (i.e., for domestic development) and demand side (i.e., for scale deployment). Then, we suggest the required individual strategies for each of the three technologies- such as a manufacturing focused policy for solar solely to develop competence in manufacturing; a bottom-up, manufacturing-led policy for battery storage with focus on deployment in parallel with technology development; and traditional top-down, research-led strategy for green hydrogen by entering via development through supply side and complementing via deployment through demand side. Dynamics of COVID-19 outbreak in India are different from other countries for her huge population and different administrative approaches. This paper presents a six compartments (SHIQRD) model with different time delays between them, to analyse and forecast the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The model introduces separate compartments for 'home-quarantined', 'quarantined infectious', and 'undetected infectious' pertaining to the Indian scenario. It also incorporates incubation time, sample testing time, and recovery window as time delays between blocks. Despite several research evaluating the connection between sustainability and the bottom line of firms, the existing research is inconclusive. In addition, most studies focus on multinational firms based in the United States or Europe, while research in the context of emerging economies is scant. This paper endeavours to investigate the strength of the association between Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure scores and the financial performance of 272 Indian firms listed on National Stock Exchange for the period 2015 to 2021 by employing panel data regression techniques. The results indicate that organisations having better ESG performance outperform their industry peers financially and are valued more by the market. Moreover, the data indicates that financial markets for lenders consider ESG disclosure when determining creditworthiness. In accordance with this, businesses can examine their operations and become more aligned with eco-friendly methods. Even though ESG disclosure appears to be associated with improved financial success, this is not the case across all industries and during COVID-19 pandemic. This study is relevant due to the growing significance of sustainability and the role of emerging nations in international commerce. It helps managers prioritize resource allocations to ESG-related activities that may affect financial performance differently across industry sectors, thus adding to the literature on the financial effects of ESG disclosures, particularly industry-specific aspects. This research represents a pioneering effort by assessing the impact of ESG disclosure on the profitability, market value, and cost of financing of Indian firms using both aggregation and disaggregation methods. In which settings can bicycles help to improve girls' education in low-income countries? This paper analyzes the complementarity between all-weather roads and a bicycle program in India aimed at increasing girls' secondary school enrollment. Using a triple-difference strategy, I find that the program benefits girls living 3–10 km away from schools with all-weather road connections, increasing their enrollment by 60 percent and reducing the gender enrollment gap by 51 percent. There are no effects for girls in villages without all-weather roads or girls living more than 10 km from school. This paper studies the impact of India's "model" school program which aimed to provide high quality education to economically disadvantaged students. Model schools combine better infrastructure with more accountability, contract teachers, and lower per-pupil spending than regular public schools. Using a fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design based on entrance exam cutoffs, I find attending a model school for five years increases test scores in math by 0.38 standard deviations, in science by 0.26 sd, and in social science by 0.26 sd on average. Furthermore, model schools increase the probability of joining pre-university by 11.5 percentage points. The results suggest it is possible to deliver substantial improvement of outcomes in public schools at a slightly lower level of school spending through a package of reforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans receive a significant portion (˃50%) of the total dose attributed to all the natural radiation sources from indoor radon (222Rn), thoron (220Rn), and their progeny. While progeny contributes an overwhelming part to the dose, in most surveys, only radon gas is measured because of the simplicity of measurement. Progeny concentration is usually estimated by multiplying gas concentration with an assumed factor, called the equilibrium factor, and taken from literature. Recently, results of the measurements of equilibrium factors for 222Rn and 220Rn were reported from various parts of the globe. In India, many such studies have been conducted in the current decade. The studies show a wide variation of equilibrium factors which suggests that they depend on environmental factors and measurement conditions. Therefore, they should be determined site specifically if accurate site-specific dose estimation is targeted. In view of school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper examines how a Home-Based Learning program affects learning outcomes of children in under-resourced communities. To overcome limited internet connectivity, the program provides remote instructions via phone calls and simple text messages along with automated voice calls to engage children enrolled in grades one to five in activity-based learning content. This intervention was conducted in three districts in the state of Odisha in India. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we find that the intervention led to a statistically significant improvement in basic number recognition and arithmetic operations, and language learning scores of children by 4.69 percentage points and 5.52 percentage points, respectively. Our results are robust to alternative methods of estimation and application of Lee bounds, thus indicating that well-designed low cost interventions could be a useful supplement for continued learning in the face of sudden shocks in low income countries. With a rise in hybrid format of teaching and learning, such interventions have the capability to cushion the decline in learning levels and provide a safety net in the event of school closures. While the disparities between women and men in respect of healthcare, education, nutrition, livelihood opportunities, and political participation are global phenomena, development of human and social capitals is crucial in this regard. In particular, emphasis on improvement in female education is imperative for bridging such gaps towards a gender indifferent society. Accordingly, policy initiatives and institutional arrangements have been made to promote female education, especially in the developing and underdeveloped countries. Nonetheless, it is uncertain whether such initiatives can necessarily improve female education. For example, the initiatives in India have mostly focused on improving physical infrastructure and other amenities in schools, raising awareness, improving nutrition, and providing financial and other supports. While such interventions are crucial, lack of basic amenities at home can also potentially hinder female education in various ways, particularly in rural areas. This paper examines how household basic amenities influence female education in rural India. Based on secondary data and applying panel data estimation techniques for Indian states, it is found that sanitation facilities at home, access to electricity, use of cleaner cooking fuels, time taken to collect water, and girl sex ratio have significant impact on school attendance of girl child and female literacy rate. While time take to collect water affects female education adversely, the rests have positive impact on the same. Furthermore, public spending on education also impacts female literacy and female literacy relative to the male literacy rate positively, though they do not have any significant influence on school attendance of girls. Further, poverty does not have any significant impact on female education. The findings, therefore, suggest that success of development policies requires inclusive and comprehensive approach to explore the complementarity across the interventions. In addition to development of school infrastructure and provision of other services, emphasis should also be given on improving household basic amenities for better outcome on female education. India has a significant importance in achieving the global Paris agreement's long-term goal as it is the world's third-largest consumer of energy. This paper aims to improve the understanding of the opportunities and constraints of decarbonizing India's electricity sector and adds to the growing body of literature by modelling the electricity sector in India with a dynamic optimization approach that assesses options for effective greenhouse reductions through carbon pricing. Attaining significant variable renewable energy penetration in India by 2050 is consistent with the lowest cost power generation options identified through our simulations, where solar and wind can provide 66 % of the electricity needs by 2050, even without a carbon price. With a carbon price of US$50/tCO2e, the simulations project that wind and power generation share in the electricity mix will rise to 81 %, leading to significant emission reductions. In this scenario, power sector emissions will be 164 million tCO2e by 2050, which is only about 14 % of the emissions levels in 2019. The analysis also indicates that fossil fuels remain part of India's electricity mix in 2050, but their role and operation would dramatically change. When a carbon price of US$50/tCO2e is introduced, coal capacity remains valuable to fill demand when solar and wind are not available. Building an effective clean air action plan for a city's air pollution problem requires an extensive network of monitoring stations to represent spatial and temporal patterns and an understanding of the sources contributing to the problem. In India, the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) was launched in 2019 to develop clean air action plans for 131 non-attainment cities, which includes conducting source apportionment studies and establishing emission baselines. As of February 2023, only 39 cities have completed the apportionment studies. In this paper, we present the essential resources needed to strengthen the ambient air monitoring networks, for designing a representative airshed size, sampling size, and sampling frequency, to effectively track the progress made in the cities for better air quality. The NCAP cities were grouped into 104 airsheds (5.3% of the national area), collectively representing a total of 164 cities and a total population of 295 million (21% of the national total). Of these airsheds, 73 contain only one city; 18 contain two cities, and nine contain three cities. Four airsheds – Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, and Chandigarh contain 10, 8, 5, and 5 cities respectively. To measure and analyse particulate matter pollution, a total of 2118 sampling sites are recommended for the 104 airsheds. Cities could consider hybrid monitoring networks by complementing existing regulatory monitoring network with a high-density network of low-cost/sensor-grade monitors. An airshed level air quality management plan, an enhanced monitoring network, and consolidation of information on emission sources, are crucial for optimizing the clean air efforts under NCAP. • There is scarce evidence on exposure to transition risks in emerging economies like India. • Sectors with high emission intensity and indebtedness account for 10% of outstanding credit. • The 10 largest borrowers and 8 of the 10 largest bond issuers are in carbon-intensive sectors. • Just one in six finance professionals have experience using ESG data to assess financial risks. • In the absence of voluntary action, regulators should intervene to ensure an orderly transition. As the low-carbon transition accelerates, loans to and investments in carbon-intensive assets, firms and sectors are at risk of not generating the anticipated returns, with implications for individual financial institutions as well as financial markets more broadly. However, research on this topic has largely been focused on high- and upper-middle income economies to date. In this paper, we explore the salience of this issue in India – one of the world's largest emitters and economies – by asking: (1) how extensive is financial-sector exposure to transition risks? And: (2) are finance professionals and financial institutions taking sufficient action to manage those transition risks? Our findings reveal that India's financial sector is much more heavily exposed to low-carbon transition risks than standard borrowing classifications might suggest. For example, our granular assessment of individual loans and bonds finds that three-fifths of lending to the 'mining' sector is for oil and gas extraction, while one-fifth of 'manufacturing' debt is for petroleum refining and related industries. We also find that electricity production – by far the largest source of emissions – accounts for 5.2% of outstanding credit, but that only 17.5% of this lending is to pureplay renewables. Yet our survey of India's largest financial institutions suggests that there have been limited efforts to identify, measure or manage low-carbon transition risks. Fewer than half of the 154 finance professionals surveyed were familiar with environmental issues including climate change mitigation and adaption, greenhouse gas emissions or transition risks. Only four of the ten major financial institutions surveyed collect information on ESG risks, and these firms do not systematically incorporate that data into business continuity planning, internal capital adequacy assessment processes, credit risk assessments, enterprise risk management frameworks or loan product pricing. Given extensive financial-sector exposure to low-carbon transition risks coupled with the absence of bottom-up action to manage those risks, our findings suggest that financiers, regulators and policymakers in emerging and developing economies should be acting swiftly to ensure an orderly transition to net-zero. Circular economy principles can lead to a series of opportunities to tackle climate change, particularly in cities of developing countries where the generation of waste, consumption and demand for energy is growing rapidly. This paper aims to advance the understanding of the expansion of circularity for tackling climate change using biomass for energy at the urban scale. In addition, little is known about how Circular Economy (CE) flows can be quantitatively integrated, what potential trade-offs exist in promoting Circular Economy using biomass, and how governance models can integrate these flows and contribute to a Circular Economy transition in cities. Based on an empirical study of a city in India, where the private sector participation through an innovative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model enabled the use of urban wastewater in thermal power plants, the study presents the viability of Circular Economy models at the city scale. The feasibility of a further expansion of this circularity by co-firing biomass in local thermal power plants was analyzed, as a potential solution for reducing pollution and carbon emissions in a hard-to-abate sector. The result indicated an average 20.5 MJ kg−1 calorific value for torrefied mixed biomass pellets from crop residues, which, if applied to about 447 kt y−1 surplus biomass available in Nagpur would amount to 9.18 PJ of energy (per year). Overall, local power plants demanded about 19.85 Mt of coal in 2017–18, equivalent to 297.8 PJ in that fiscal year. Thus, the supply of torrefied pellets from peri-urban crop residues can meet between 2 and 3% of the demand from coal-fired power plants, resulting in a 0.3% decrease in the emissions from the power sector in India in 2017–18 (i.e., 922 MtCO 2), benefiting different sectors and levels of government. The analysis provides a framework for understanding the technical and institutional possibilities for strengthening the relationship between circular economy and climate change in the cities of developing countries by connecting flows and systems within and beyond urban centers. Therefore, the expansion of Circular Economy in cities can occur by integrating urban sectors and policy coordination at different levels of governance. Partnerships between local governments, utilities, and civil society for co-managing energy, water, and waste in cities can reduce the financial burden on national governments, including meeting national emission targets. There is anxiety that has been rising vis-à-vis the climate changes in the entire world. Notwithstanding this, the primary purpose of this paper is to examine the board characteristics and carbon emission performance. This study applied the fixed effect model, 2SLS, and multiple regression analyses data from 220 non-financial listed companies on the BSE index and covering a period of 7 years from FY 2014-15 to FY 2020-21. The estimated results confirmed that board size, board meetings, board gender diversity, CEO duality, and ownership concentration have a negative association with carbon emission performance. In addition, board independence and the environmental committee are found to be positively associated with carbon emission performance based on 2 SLS and multiple regression analyses, and these results imply that they improve carbon performance. Overall, this study's shreds of evidence suggest that governing boards tend to pay attention to company's carbon performance and without mitigating original carbon performance is not likely to reduced GHGs emissions. This study's outcomes have significant implications for policymakers, corporate bodies, creditors, and regulators regarding the efficiency of corporate governance mechanisms in communicating climate change risks. However, corporate boards can use these results to find positive aspects of companies and formulate possible corporate governance modifications in relation to carbon policies. Achieving and maintaining suitable water quality is one of the important parameters to ensure health and well-being of the human as well as ecosystems. Among the various aquatic ecosystems, riverine ecosystems are more prone to pollution and therefore needs to be monitored frequently and on regular time intervals. In this context, real-time water quality monitoring system offers excellent opportunity to keep track of the water quality on a continuous basis; which not only helps to identify the affected location and pollution source, but also creates alert enabling the authorities to take immediate action. One such real-time water quality monitoring system was installed in the River Ganga (India), considering the fragility and significance of the Gangetic ecosystem. In this paper, we have presented the details of the real-time water quality monitoring system installed in River Ganga and results obtained through it for various parameters. The results have also been compared with the standard values. Additionally, based on this preliminary investigation, limitations and recommendations have also been presented to further enhance the utility of the system. Pollution of water resources and a lack of potable water are two important issues that city dwellers in India encounter. The passage of untreated sewage down municipal drains is one of the most significant sources of water resource pollution. In densely populated areas, effective sanitation and wastewater management is becoming increasingly difficult. In many developing nations, centralized sewage and wastewater treatment facilities serve only a section of big cities, and on-site sanitation is frequently insufficient in heavily populated areas. There is a demand for complementary and intermediate solutions. DEWATS (community-managed anaerobic decentralized wastewater treatment systems) is a good option for the possibility of relatively fast sanitation improvements in high-priority neighbourhoods where the local authority is not providing a full sanitation service. The following technical treatment modules are typically seen in DEWATS. The primary treatment consists of sedimentation ponds, settlers, septic tanks or bio digester, secondary treatment consists of anaerobic baffled reactors, anaerobic filters or anaerobic and facultative pond systems, secondary aerobic/facultative treatment consists of horizontal gravel filters and post-treatment consists of aerobic polishing ponds. The experience of India in establishing community-managed DEWATS on a large scale is examined in this review. Stepping in the 21st century, the materials used in pavement construction have diversified and progressed with time. Due to an increase in the cost of materials, depletion of natural resources, and accentuation on environmental sustainability, the usage of recycled asphalt pavement material has become popular worldwide. However, there appears to be inadequate works and a gap in understanding the method of recycling and its concomitant economic and environmental benefits at a commercial level in India. The majority of studies have focused on base and sub-base courses, whereas few works have been conducted for the surface course. Furthermore, India is a growing powerhouse in South Asia, and the pavement industry constitutes a vital sector. Thus, the reuse and recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement in India is an emerging domain, but their usage is in low amount as compared to the United States, Europe and Japan. Hence, the objective of this review paper is to provide information on the suitability and utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement in various areas of pavements that will eventually contribute to creating a balanced system in solving the environmental and material scarcity, economic benefit and consequently transform the construction industry to sustainable and eco-convivial. Growing economic crisis and strict government policies and regulations regarding the environment have forced the battery industries to practice the recycling process for both economic and environmental benefits. Moreover the consideration of sustainability issues makes the recycling process more significant, successful implementation of recycling activity in the battery industry requires several strategic decisions. Among these decisions, a complex decision faced by the management is to identify the suitable location for the establishment of a formal Battery Recycling Plant (BRP). In this research work, a three-stage hybrid methodology with the combination of ISM (Interpretive Structural Modeling), fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), and fuzzy COPRAS (Complex Proportional Assessment of Alternatives) methods was proposed to select the best sustainable location from the available options for BRP in India. In this study, a total of eight experts were selected from both academia and industry. Initially in this paper, 4 main sustainable criteria and 20 sustainable sub-criteria were considered from the literature review and field visits along with experts' opinions for evaluation of alternatives. This work contains three stages. In the first stage, the ISM method was used to filter 18 important sustainable sub-criteria from the primary list of 20 sub-criteria, based on its higher driving power. Then, fuzzy AHP was applied in the second stage to compute the criteria weights. In the last stage, the fuzzy COPRAS was used to rank and choose the best sustainable location for BRP. The findings emphasize that the Environmental protection level, Distance from residential areas, Distance from water source, Capital investment, Government policies, Social acceptance, Availability of scrap batteries, and Availability of utilities were the most significant criteria in the sustainability dimension. Green investing has recently received considerable attention in India in light of the local government plans to significantly reduce the level of CO 2 emissions through conducting and funding various types of eco-friendly infrastructures and green projects on a national scale. Given that investment in environmentally friendly projects is still relatively new in India, the stock prices of Indian green companies could be highly volatile and very prone to risk transmission from other assets, which requires a precise estimation of the time-varying volatility of these green stocks to understand their underlying risk. In this paper, we examine if the stock volatility of Indian green companies can be predicted based on the information contents of commodity market implied volatility indexes (VIX) by employing a GARCH-based quantile regression model on daily data. The results show that risk significantly transmits from crude oil, gold, and silver markets to various Indian green stock indexes. The impact of the transmission from commodity market VIXs is stronger during the bearish stock market periods compared to bullish stock market periods, suggesting that green stock indexes are more likely to receive volatility from energy and precious metal markets during the periods of high uncertainty.
