The primary focus of the current paper centers on the microstructures and mechanical properties exhibited by a Ti-30Nb-12Zr-5Ta-2Sn-1.25Fe (wt. %) (TNZTSF) alloy that has been produced through an intricate synthesis process comprising cold-crucible induction in levitation, carried out in an atmosphere controlled by argon, and cold-rolling deformation (CR), applying systematic adjustments in the total deformation degree (total applied thickness reduction), spanning from 10% to 60%. The microstructural characteristics of the processed specimens were investigated by SEM and XRD techniques, and the mechanical properties by tensile and microhardness testing. The collected data indicate that the TNZTSF alloy's microstructure, in the as-received condition, consists of a β-Ti phase, which shows polyhedral equiaxed grains with an average grain size close to 82.5 µm. During the cold-deformation processing, the microstructure accommodates the increased applied deformation degree by increasing crystal defects such as sub-grain boundaries, dislocation cells, dislocation lines, and other crystal defects, powerfully affecting the morphological characteristics. The as-received TNZTSF alloy showed both high strength (i.e., ultimate tensile strength close to σUTS = 705.6 MPa) and high ductility (i.e., elongation to fracture close to εf = 11.1%) properties, and the computed β-Ti phase had the lattice parameter a = 3.304(7) Å and the average lattice microstrain ε = 0.101(3)%, which are drastically influenced by the applied cold deformation, increasing the strength properties and decreasing the ductility properties due to the increased crystal defects density. Applying a deformation degree close to 60% leads to an ultimate tensile strength close to σUTS = 1192.1 MPa, an elongation to fracture close to εf = 7.9%, and an elastic modulus close to 54.9 GPa, while the computed β-Ti phase lattice parameter becomes a = 3.302(1) Å. With the development of product miniaturization in aerospace, the nuclear industry, and other fields, Ni-Co-based superalloys with excellent overall properties have become key materials for micro components in these fields. In the microforming field, size effects significantly impact the mechanical properties and plastic deformation behavior of materials. In this paper, micro-tensile experiments at room temperature and an ultra-low temperature were carried out to study the effects of initial microstructure and deformation temperature on the deformation behavior of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets. The results show that as the ratio of specimen thickness to grain size (t/d) decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, the tensile strength σb decreased from 1221 MPa to 1090 MPa, the yield strength σs decreased from 793 MPa to 622 MPa, and the elongation decreased from 0.26 to 0.21 at room temperature. When t/d decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, σb decreased from 1458 MPa to 1132 MPa, σs decreased from 917 MPa to 730 MPa, and the elongation decreased from 0.31 to 0.28 at ultra-low temperatures. When t/d decreased from 8.6 to 2.4, the surface roughness of the specimen increased from 0.769 to 0.890 at room temperature and increased from 0.648 to 0.809 at ultra-low temperatures. During the microplastic deformation process of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets, the coupled effects of surface roughening caused by free surface grains and hindered dislocation movement induced by grain boundary resulted in strain localization, which caused fracture failure of Ni-Co-based superalloy thin sheets. Additive manufacturing techniques are being used more and more to perform the precise fabrication of engineering components with complex geometries. The heterogeneity of additively manufactured microstructures deteriorates the mechanical integrity of products. In this paper, we printed AISI 316L stainless steel using the additive manufacturing technique of laser metal deposition. Both single-phase and dual-phase substructures were formed in the grain interiors. Electron backscatter diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that Si, Mo, S, Cr were enriched, while Fe was depleted along the substructure boundaries. In situ micro-compression testing was performed at room temperature along the [001] orientation. The dual-phase substructures exhibited lower yield strength and higher Young's modulus compared with single-phase substructures. Our research provides a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured metallic materials. To reduce harmful gas emission and improve the operational efficiency, advanced ultra-supercritical power plants put forward higher requirements on the high temperature mechanical properties of applied materials. In this paper, the tensile behavior and deformation mechanisms of MarBN steel are discussed at different strain rates (5 × 10−3 s−1, 5 × 10−4 s−1, and 5 × 10−5 s−1) under room temperature and 630 °C. The results show that the tensile behavior of the alloy is dependent on temperature and strain rate, which derived from the balance between the average dislocation velocity and dislocation density. Furthermore, observed dynamic recrystallized grains under severe deformation reveal the existence of dynamic recovery at 630 °C, which increases the elongation compared to room temperature. Finally, three typical constitutive equations are used to quantitatively describe the tensile deformation behavior of MarBN steel under different strain rates and temperatures. Hot deformation behavior of 4130 steel and optimization of its processing parameters are presented in this paper. Compression tests were performed at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1200 °C and at the strain rates in the range from 0.01 to 100 s−1. A comprehensive analysis of the material behavior at different temperature and strain-rate ranges was performed taking into account various criteria of stability and instability of the material flow under various thermomechanical conditions. The flow–stress curves obtained during compression tests, as well as the processing maps elaborated on the basis of various flow–stability criteria, are discussed. Processing parameters developed according to the Prasad's and Murty's criteria are recommended for designing the technology of forging of the investigated steel. Such parameters ensure the homogeneity and stability of the material flow in a forged part, what was confirmed by successful forging of 4130 steel in industrial conditions. The processing map developed according to Gegel's approach, as compared to the processing maps obtained in accordance with the Prasad's and Murty's criteria, should be treated as general support for determining the thermomechanical processing parameters. Lightweight structural alloys have broad application prospects in aerospace, energy, and transportation fields, and it is crucial to understand the hot deformation behavior of novel alloys for subsequent applications. The deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of a new Al-Zn-Mg-Li-Cu alloy was studied by hot compression experiments at temperatures ranging from 300 °C to 420 °C and strain rates ranging from 0.01 s−1 to 10 s−1. The as-cast Al-Zn-Mg-Li-Cu alloy is composed of an α-Al phase, an Al2Cu phase, a T phase, an η phase, and an η′ phase. The constitutive relationship between flow stress, temperature, and strain rate, represented by Zener–Hollomon parameters including Arrhenius terms, was established. Microstructure observations show that the grain size and the fraction of DRX increases with increasing deformation temperature. The grain size of DRX decreases with increasing strain rates, while the fraction of DRX first increases and then decreases. A certain amount of medium-angle grain boundaries (MAGBs) was present at both lower and higher deformation temperatures, suggesting the existence of continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). The cumulative misorientation from intragranular to grain boundary proves that the CDRX mechanism of the alloy occurs through progressive subgrain rotation. Permanent deformation is one of the dominant asphalt concrete damages. Significant progress has been made to realistically predict the damage. In the last decade, the mechanistic approach has been the focus of research, and the fundamental theories of viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, continuum mechanics, and micromechanics are applied to develop the material laws (constitutive equations). This paper reviews the advancement of permanent deformation models including analogical, microstructural, and continuum-based methods. Pavement analysis using the nonlinear damage approach (PANDA) is the most comprehensive and theoretically sound approach that is available in the literature. The model coupled different damages and other phenomena (such as cracking, moisture, and phenomena such as healing, aging, etc.). The anisotropic microstructure approach can be incorporated into the PANDA approach for a more realistic prediction. Moreover, the interaction of fatigue and permanent deformation is the gap that is lacking in the literature. Nickel-based superalloys have been widely used in the aerospace industry, and regulating the reinforcing phases is the key to improving the high-temperature strength of the alloy. In this study, a series of aging treatments (650 °C, 750 °C, 850 °C and 950 °C for 8 h) were designed to study different thermal deformation behaviors and microstructure evolutions for a novel nickel-based superalloy. Among the aged samples, the 950 °C aged sample achieved the peak stress of ~323 MPa during the thermal deformation and the highest microhardness of ~315 HV after thermal compression, which were the greatest differences compared to before deformation. In addition, the grains of the 950 °C sample exhibit deformed fibrous shapes, and the grain orientation is isotropic, while the other samples exhibited isotropy. In the 850 °C and 950 °C high-temperature aging samples, the γ′ precipitate (about 20 nm in size) is gradually precipitated, which inhibits the movement of dislocation in the grain during compression, thus inhibiting the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization and improving the high-temperature mechanical properties of the alloy. The experimentally obtained material microstructure can be used to calculate a material's properties and identify microstructure–property relationships. The key procedure to enable this is to interpret the observed microstructure accurately. This work reports on a newly developed computational method to serve such a purpose. The method is based on cubic spline interpolation and a simple search algorithm. Parameterisation was accomplished via the comparison between its preliminary statistical results and the information in a phase diagram. The method was applied to analyse the quenched microstructure of multicomponent and multiphase metallic-oxide materials. The importance of adequate parameterisation is demonstrated. The results provide a good explanation for the experimentally measured electric conductance behaviour. Further application of the method to the deformation of materials is discussed. Through the study of the thermal rheological behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy at different temperatures (500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C) and different strain rates (0.1 s−1, 0.05 s−1, 0.01 s−1, and 0.005 s−1), a constitutive model was developed for Ti6Al4V alloy across a wide temperature range in the hot stamping process. The model's correlation coefficient reached 0.9847, indicating its high predictive accuracy. Hot processing maps suitable for the hot stamping process of Ti6Al4V alloy were developed, demonstrating the significant impact of the strain rate on the hot formability of Ti6Al4V alloy. At higher strain rates (>0.05 s−1), the hot processing of Ti6Al4V alloy is less prone to instability. Combining hot processing maps with hot stamping experiments, it was found that the forming quality and thickness uniformity of parts improved significantly with the increase in stamping speed. The phase composition and microstructures of the forming parts under different heating temperature conditions have been investigated using SEM, EBSD, XRD, and TEM, and the maximum heating temperature of hot stamping forming was determined to be 875 °C. The recrystallization mechanism in hot stamping of Ti6Al4V alloys was proposed based on EBSD tests on different sections of a hot stamping formed box-shaped component. With increasing deformation, the effect of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was enhanced. When the thinning rate reached 15%, DRX surpassed dynamic recovery (DRV) as the dominant softening mechanism. DRX grains at different thinning rates were formed through both discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), with CDRX always being the dominant mechanism. Thermal deformation behavior of Cu–Cr–Sn alloy ingots under deformation temperatures ranging from 600 °C to 950 °C and strain rates from 0.01 s−1 to 10 s−1 was investigated in detail. The thermal deformation constitutive equation and thermal processing map of the alloy were established, respectively. The activation energy Q was determined as 430.61 KJ/mol. The optimal deformation system corresponding to the hot working diagram was a deformation temperature of 900 °C and strain rate of 0.1 s−1. Under these deformation conditions, twin dynamic recrystallization (TDRX), continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) occurred simultaneously, with the twinning process causing the stress–strain curve to exhibit a wavy change. The thermal deformation microstructure of the alloy is co-regulated by different recrystallization mechanisms, with DDRX occurring mainly at low deformation temperatures, and both CDRX and DDRX occurring at high deformation temperatures. High-efficiency and low-cost hot forming technologies for titanium alloys have been developed for producing complex-shaped, thin-walled tubular components under non-superplastic forming conditions. Under these forming conditions, there exist complex and highly integrated material evolution processes including microscopic heterogeneous deformation, microstructure evolution and damage behaviour. This paper presents an integrated crystal plasticity finite element model of near-α titanium alloys during non-superplastic hot deformation conditions considering grain boundary sliding (GBS), dynamic recrystallisation (DRX), as well as void evolution. The polycrystalline model of a near-α TA15 titanium alloy was established, containing α phase, β phase and grain boundary (GB) regions, in which the GB region was a visualised representation of GBS. The quantitative strength ratio between the GB regions and α phase was calculated according to the Zener–Holloman parameter Z and grain size, which determined the microscopic deformation behaviour. There were found to be two high microscopic strain regions in the α phase: intragranular deformation bands through the most favourable slipping and near the GBs through multiple slipping, which promoted continuous and discontinuous DRX, respectively. With the decrease in parameter Z or grain size, the activated dislocations accommodating GBS were found to no longer pile up inside the grain, but instead travel across the grain interior. Finally, methods to improve the macroscopic plastic formability were proposed for the difficult-to-form titanium alloys experiencing non-superplastic hot deformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper analyzes UNS S32750 Super-Duplex Stainless Steel hot deformation behavior during processing by upsetting. The objective of this paper is to determine the optimum range of deformation temperatures, considering that both austenite and ferrite have different deformation behaviors due to their different morphology, physical, and mechanical properties. Because the capability of plastic deformation accommodation of ferrite is reduced when compared to austenite, side cracks and fissures can form during the hot deformation process. Consequently, it is important to find the optimum conditions of deformation of this type of stainless steel to establish the best processing parameters without deteriorating the material. The experimental program involved the application of hot deformation by the upsetting method on a series of samples between 1000 °C and 1275 °C, with a total degree of deformation of 30%. The resultant samples were examined by SEM-EBSD to establish and analyze the evolution of the phases present in the structure from several points of view: nature, distribution, morphology (size and shape), and their structural homogeneity. The GROD (Grain Reference Orientation Deviation) distribution map was also determined while taking into account the possible precipitation of the secondary austenite phase (γ2-phase) and the analysis of the dynamic recrystallization process according to the applied deformation temperature. The deteriorated plasticity arising from the insoluble precipitates may lead to cracks during the rolling of FeCrAl alloys. The microstructure evolution and hot deformation behavior of an FeCrAl alloy were investigated in the temperature range of 750–1200 °C and strain rate range of 0.01–10 s−1. The flow stress of the FeCrAl alloy decreased with an increasing deformation temperature and decreased strain rate during hot working. The thermal deformation activation energy was determined to be 329.49 kJ/mol based on the compression test. Then, the optimal hot working range was given based on the established hot processing maps. The hot processing map revealed four small instability zones. The optimal working range for the material was identified as follows: at a true strain of 0.69, the deformation temperature should be 1050–1200 °C, and the strain rate should be 0.01–0.4 s−1. The observation of key samples of thermally simulated compression showed that discontinuous dynamic recrystallization started to occur with the temperate above 1000 °C, leading to bended grain boundaries. In this study, the microstructural evolution of a Ti-15Mo medical alloy was investigated, when the in situ cyclic tensile strain had 2% amplitude and the tension–compression cyclic deformation had 1%, 2%, and 3% amplitude. The Vickers hardness and wear resistance of the alloy were also optimized due to the grain-refining effect after cyclic deformation and annealing. The twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) was considered the main deformation mechanism of the Ti-15Mo alloy during the tensile–compressive cycle deformation with suitable strain amplitude. The {332}<113> twins and boundaries were the main contributors to the grain refinement. The optimal microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance were obtained in the alloy deformed by tension–compression cyclic strain with a 3% strain amplitude. The wear resistance of the annealed alloy in Hank's solution was excellent in contrast to the original Ti-15Mo alloy due to its reasonable microstructure and hardness. It is clear that abundant twins were formed and retained in the coarse grains of the original alloy after cyclic deformation and annealing, which provided the expected refined grains and performance. The deformation behavior and microstructure of 6061 aluminum alloy processed by severe plastic deformation (SPD) using biaxial alternate forging that can evaluate the forming limit and mechanical properties of alloys, simultaneously, were investigated in this study. A finite element (FE) analysis on the biaxial alternating forging process, considering the strain-hardening coefficient and forging pass of the material, was conducted. When the strain-hardening coefficient is 0, an average effective strain of 440% was found within a diameter of 4 mm in the core of the workpiece after eight passes, while it was 300% at the same pass number when the strain-hardening coefficient was 0.2. The average effective strain estimated from the FE analysis was about 264% after eight passes of forging, which is considered to be a level of SPD that significantly exceeds the elongation of the raw material. As a result of the tensile test according to the forging pass, after two passes, the strength of the material could be gradually improved without significant degradation of elongation. Even though a large strain of 264% was found after eight passes were applied, deformed grains and twins with no recrystallized structure in optical microstructures with different forging passes were found. This study investigates the microstructures and deformation mechanism of hetero-structured pure Ti under different high strain rates (500 s−1, 1000 s−1, 2000 s−1). It has been observed that, in samples subjected to deformation, the changes in texture are minimal and the rise in temperature is relatively low. Therefore, the influence of these two factors on the deformation mechanism can be disregarded. As the strain rate increases, the dominance of dislocation slip decreases while deformation twinning becomes more prominent. Notably, at a strain rate of 2000 s−1, nanoscale twin lamellae are activated within the grain with a size of 500 nm, which is a rarely observed phenomenon in pure Ti. Additionally, martensitic phase transformation has also been identified. In order to establish a correlation between the stress required for twinning and the grain size, a modified Hall–Petch model is proposed, with the obtained value of K t w i n serving as an effective metric for this relationship. A review of studies on the electroplastic effect on the deformation process in various conductive materials and alloys for the last decade has been carried out. Aspects, such as the mode and regimes of electric current, the practical methods of its introduction into materials with different deformation schemes, features of deformation behavior accompanied by a pulsed current of different materials, structural changes caused by the combined action of deformation and current, the influence of structural features on the electroplastic effect, changes in the physical, mechanical, and technological properties of materials subjected to plastic deformation under current, possible mechanisms and methods of physical and computer modeling of the electroplastic effect, and potential and practical applications of the electroplastic effect are considered. The growing research interest in the manifestation of the electroplastic effect in such new modern materials as shape-memory alloys and ultrafine-grained and nanostructured alloys is shown. Various methods of modeling the mechanisms of electroplasticity, especially at the microlevel, are becoming the most realistic approach for the prediction of the deformation behavior and physical and mechanical properties of various materials. We researched the cold and hot composite-forming process, setting the forming speed at 2 m/min, the induction heating frequency at 40 KHz, and the induction current at 3000 A, and manufactured curtain wall steel with sharp corners. We analyzed the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deformation zone of the sharp-edged section using a tensile test, impact test analysis, metallographic observation (OM), fracture morphology observation, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The results show that the formed profile had a 96% reduction in the radius of the outer fillet and a 76% increase in the thickness of the corner compared to the pre-formed shape. The tensile strength increased by 3.6%, and the elongation after break increased by 13%. MgO expansive agent (MEA) has the potential to meet the shrinkage compensation demands for concrete in different types of structures due to its designable reactivity and expansion properties. This study investigated the impact of three types of MEAs with different reactivities as well as curing temperature on the autogenous deformation, mechanical properties, and the microstructure of cement-based materials. The results showed that MEA type R exhibits a faster and larger hydration degree and expansion in cement mortars than MEA type M or type S in early ages under 20 °C, while when the curing temperature increases to 40 °C and 60 °C, MEA type M and type S present with significant accelerations in the hydration degree, leading to accelerated expansion rates and significantly increased expansion values compared to MEA type R. Under 40 °C, 5% MEA type M and type S present with 2.2 times and 1.1 times higher expansion in mortars than 5% MEA type R, respectively, and 8% MEA type M and type S present with 7.1 times and 5.6 times higher expansion in mortars than 8% MEA type R, respectively. Under 60 °C, 5% MEA type M and type S present 4.0 times and 3.1 times higher expansion in mortars than 5% MEA type R, respectively, and 8% MEA type M and type S present 7.0 times and 6.6 times higher expansion in mortars than 8% MEA type R, respectively. However, the increase in porosity, especially for large pores with pore size greater than 50 nm as well as the microcracks induced by the 8% dosage of MEA type M, type S, and high curing temperature of 60 °C, result in a decrease in strength of about 30% for the cement mortars. The results indicate that MEA type R is more suitable for shrinkage compensation of cement-based materials with lower temperatures, while MEA type M and type S are more suitable for shrinkage compensation of cement-based materials with higher temperatures. Under high-temperature and low-constraint conditions, the dosage of MEA needs to be strictly controlled to prevent negative effects on the microstructure and strength of cement-based materials. The hot deformation behavior and dynamic softening mechanism of 7B50 aluminum alloy were studied via isothermal compression experiments in the range of 320–460 °C/0.001–1.0 s−1. According to the flow curves obtained from the experiments, the flow behavior of this alloy was analyzed, and the Zener–Hollomon (Z) parameter equation was established. The hot processing maps of this alloy were developed based on the dynamic material model, and the optimal hot working region was determined to be 410–460 °C/0.01–0.001 s−1. The electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microstructure analysis of the deformed sample shows that the dynamic softening mechanism and microstructure evolution strongly depend on the Z parameter. Meanwhile, a correlation between the dynamic softening mechanism and the lnZ value was established. Dynamic recovery (DRV) was the only softening mechanism during isothermal compression with lnZ ≥ 20. Discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) becomes the dominant dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism under deformation conditions of 15 < lnZ < 20. Meanwhile, the size and percentage of DDRXed grains increased with decreasing lnZ values. Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of LZ91 Mg-Li alloy processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at an ambient temperature were researched in this paper. The microstructure analysis demonstrated that significant grain refinement was achieved after HPT processing with an average grain size reducing from 30 μm (the as-received condition) to approximately 230 nm through 10 turns. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed LZ91 alloy was consisted of α phase (hexagonal close-packed structure, hcp) and β phase (body-centered cubic structure, bcc) before and after HPT processing. The mean value of microhardness increased with the increasing number of HPT turns. This significantly increased hardness of specimens can be explained by Hall-Petch strengthening. Simultaneously, the distribution of microhardness along the specimens was different from other materials after HPT processing due to the different mechanical properties of two different phases. The mechanical properties of LZ91 alloy processed by HPT were assessed by the micro-tensile testing at 298, 373, 423, and 473 K. The results demonstrate that the ultra-fine grain LZ91 Mg-Li alloy exhibits excellent mechanical properties: tensile elongation is approximately 400% at 473 K with an initial strain rate of 1 × 10−2 s−1. This paper presents results of investigation of multifunctional β-Ti alloy Gum Metal subjected to tension at various strain rates. Digital image correlation was used to determine strain distributions and stress-strain curves, while infrared camera allowed for us to obtain the related temperature characteristics of the specimen during deformation. The mechanical curves completed by the temperature changes were applied to analyze the subsequent stages of the alloy loading. Elastic limit, recoverable strain, and development of the strain localization were studied. It was found that the maximal drop in temperature, which corresponds to the yield limit of solid materials, was referred to a significantly lower strain value in the case of Gum Metal in contrast to its large recoverable strain. The temperature increase proves a dissipative character of the process and is related to presence of ω and α″ phases induced during the alloy fabrication and their exothermic phase transformations activated under loading. During plastic deformation, both the strain and temperature distributions demonstrate that strain localization for higher strain rates starts nucleating just after the yield limit leading to specimen necking and rupture. Large-scale, high-strength aluminum alloy forgings are essential components in the aerospace industry, with benefits including increasing strength and decreasing weight. Accurate shape-property control is the secret to forging quality. This study uses the alloy 7050 to experimentally evaluate the parametric influence of cold compression on residual stress and mechanical characteristics. The evolutions of mechanical properties, microstructure and residual stress are theoretically studied using various cold compression strains from 1% to 5% on an equivalent part, of which the results are further applied on a complicated rib-structured die forging. It is demonstrated that increasing the compression strain reduces the tensile strength of the material, but has little impact on conductivity and fracture toughness. According to the TEM results, compression also encourages the precipitation and growth of precipitated phases, particularly in positions with high dislocation densities after aging. Cold compression significantly reduces residual stress; nevertheless, as compression strain increases, residual stress first decreases and then increases. With the use of rib-structured forging, it is observed that the compression strain for 7050 aluminum alloy ranges from 2% to 4%, and the combined pressing method of the rib and web improves the uniformity of residual stress. Cellular automata (CA) are efficient and effective numerical tools for modeling various phenomena and processes, e.g., microstructure evolution in plastic working processes. In many cases, the analysis of phenomena can be carried out only in a limited space and on representative volume. This limitation determines the geometry of CA space hence boundary conditions are very important issues in modeling. The paper discusses different boundary conditions that can be applied to modeling. Taking into account the transformation of the modeling space, the model should allow the selection of boundary conditions. The modeling of certain phenomena and processes is directly related to changes in the geometry of a representative volume and therefore may require changes or reorganization of the modeled CA space. Four reorganization options are presented: halving, cutting and bonding, doubling, and straightening. A choice of boundary conditions may depend on particular space reorganization as used for the modeling of microstructure evolution. A set of decision rules for selecting space reorganization options taking into account the changes of CA shape and sizes is also presented. The aims of this paper were to: (a) demonstrate how iso-thermal plots of the Wilshire equation can be used to identify the correct structure of this equation (which in turn enables a meaningful description of the creep mechanism involved in deformation to be made); and (b) show how a generalized specification of batch to batch variation could produce less conservative predictions of the time to failure associated with a given degree of risk. Such predictions were obtained using maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of a generalised F distribution. It was found that the original Wilshire-Scharning assumption of a constant activation energy for this materials is incorrect. Consequently, their interpretation of deformation being due only to dislocation creep with deteriorating microstructure at long duration test times appears to be ill founded, with the varying activation energy suggesting instead that deformation is due to grain boundary sliding accommodated by either dislocation and diffusional creep with dominance changing from the lattice to the grain boundaries as the temperature changes. The presence of a second phase in Al-Cu-MG alloys, with various sizes and supersaturation-solid-solubility, which can be changed by pre-heat-treatment, could have remarkable influence on hot workability and mechanical performance. In the present work, a continuously cast 2024 Al alloy was homogenized and then subjected to hot compression and continuous extrusion (Conform) along with the initial as-cast alloy. The results showed that the 2024 Al alloy specimen with pre-heat treatment had a higher resistance to deformation and dynamic recovery (DRV) during hot compression process compared with the as-cast sample. Meanwhile, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was advanced in the pre-heat-treated sample. After the Conform Process, the pre-heat-treated sample also attained better mechanical properties without additional solid solution treatment. The higher supersaturation solid solubility and dispersoids generated during pre-heat treatment was proved to play a key role in restricting boundary migration, tangling dislocation motion and promoting the precipitation of S phase, which raised resistance to DRV and plastic deformation and enhanced the mechanical properties. In this work, the effect of the Ru element on the γ′-phase evolution and deformation mechanism in the fourth-generation Ni-based single-crystal superalloy was investigated. Results show that the Ru element alters the distribution coefficient of other elements in the alloy to produce reverse partitioning behavior, which leads to a difference in microstructure between 0Ru and 3Ru. The addition of Ru triggered the incubation period before the beginning of the primary creep stage, which depends on the creep temperature and stress during creep deformation. TEM results revealed that Ru addition inhibits the slip system {111}<112> at medium-temperature (760–1050 °C) and high-stress (270–810 MPa) creep, which brings a considerably low creep rate and high creep life to the Ru-containing alloy. The 2198 Al–Li alloy has unique superiority in mechanical performance and has been extensively used in the aerospace field. In this study, the hot deformation behavior of the 2198 Al–Li alloy was investigated on a Gleeble-1500 thermomechanical simulator with a strain rate of 0.01–10 s−1 in the temperature range of 330–510 °C. The Arrhenius constitutive equation of the alloy was established based on the true stress–strain curves to describe the rheology behaviors during the deformation of the alloy. The processing maps under the strain of 0.2–0.8 were constructed, which indicates the efficiency of power dissipation and instability of the deformed alloy. It was found that the instability domains are more likely to occur in the regions of low deformation temperature and high strain rate, corresponding to the high Zener–Hollomon (Z) parameter. The microstructure evolution of the studied alloy with different Z parameters was characterized. Then, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior was studied by electron backscatter diffraction, and the misorientation angle of deformed specimens was analyzed. The effect of different deformation temperatures and strain rates on the microstructure of the alloy and the behavior of dislocations and precipitations were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and geomatic dynamic recrystallization (GDRX) mainly occur at the deformation conditions of a low Z value, and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) is likely to occur with increasing Z values. In this article, hot compression tests on the additively produced 18Ni-300 maraging steel 18Ni-300 were carried out on the Gleeble thermomechanical simulator in a wide temperature range (900–1200 °C) and at strain rates of 0.001 10 s−1. The samples were microstructurally analysed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). This showed that dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was predominant in the samples tested at high strain rates and high deformation temperatures. In contrast, dynamic recovery (DRV) dominated at lower deformation temperatures and strain rates. Subsequently, the material constants were evaluated in a constitutive relationship using the experimental flow stress data. The results confirmed that the specimens are well hot workable and, compared with the literature data, have similar activation energy for hot working as the conventionally fabricated specimens. The findings presented in this research article can be used to develop novel hybrid postprocessing technologies that enable single-stage net shape forging/forming of AM maraging steel parts at reduced forming forces and with improved density and mechanical properties. Clarifying the deformation behaviors of microstructures could greatly help us understand the precipitation-strengthening mechanism in alloys. However, it is still a formidable challenge to study the slow plastic deformation of alloys at the atomic scale. In this work, the phase-field crystal method was used to investigate the interactions between precipitates, grain boundary, and dislocation during the deformation processes at different degrees of lattice misfits and strain rates. The results demonstrate that the pinning effect of precipitates becomes increasingly strong with the increase of lattice misfit at relatively slow deformation with a strain rate of 10−4. The cut regimen prevails under the interaction between coherent precipitates and dislocations. In the case of a large lattice misfit of 19.3%, the dislocations tend to move toward the incoherent phase interface and are absorbed. The deformation behavior of the precipitate-matrix phase interface was also investigated. Collaborative deformation is observed in coherent and semi-coherent interfaces, while incoherent precipitate deforms independently of the matrix grains. The faster deformations (strain rate is 10−2) with different lattice misfits all are characterized by the generation of a large number of dislocations and vacancies. The results contribute to important insights into the fundamental issue about how the microstructures of precipitation-strengthening alloys deform collaboratively or independently under different lattice misfits and deformation rates. Creep deformation is an important aspect of magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) used as a structural material. In this study, the shrinkage and creep deformation behaviors of three different MPC concretes were observed for 550 days. The mechanical properties, phase composition, pore structure, and microstructure of MPC concretes after shrinkage and creep tests were investigated. The results showed that the shrinkage and creep strains of MPC concretes stabilized in the ranges of −140 to −170 με and −200 to −240 με, respectively. The low water-to-binder ratio and the formation of crystalline struvite were responsible for such low deformation. The creep strain had almost no effect on the phase composition; however, it increased the crystal size of struvite and reduced the porosity, especially the volume of pores with diameters <20 nm and >200 nm. To explore room-temperature strengthening and high-temperature ductility, a lightweight novel Mg-1.85Gd-0.64Al-0.62Zn alloy was fabricated by innovative multidirectional forging and a hot-rolling technique. Microstructures and mechanical properties were studied at room and elevated temperatures with an optical microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, and a tensile tester. An ultimate tensile strength of 260 MPa, yield strength of 171 MPa, and elongation of 20.4% were demonstrated at room temperature. The room-temperature strengthening mechanisms were identified by strengthening the model estimation. A type C Portevin-Le Chatelier effect was discovered and elucidated in this alloy. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the phase composition is α-Mg solid solution and (Mg, Al)3Gd, Al7Zn3, and Al2Gd intermetallic compounds. Examination of the microstructure at elevated temperatures revealed that dynamic recrystallization and dynamic grain growth occur. In particular, it was discovered that bimodal microstructures or incomplete dynamic recrystallization microstructures exist in high-temperature deformation. A maximum quasi-superplasticity of 228.4% was demonstrated in this alloy at 673 K and 5.0 × 10−4 s−1. Flow stress curves showed that the present alloy exhibits Sotoudeh–Bate curves or a long intermediate strain-hardening stage followed by a strain-softening stage. A modified Zerilli–Armstrong constitutive equation incorporating the number of dislocations was established. The power-law constitutive equation was established to identify the deformation mechanism. Both constitutive models had good predictability. At 673 K and 5.0 × 10−4 s−1, the stress exponent was 4, and the average deformation activation energy was 104.42 kJ/mol. The number of dislocations inside a grain was 146. In the present work, the microstructure, phase composition, and temperature dependence of the mechanical properties and fracture micromechanisms of low-carbon steel produced by conventional casting and electron beam additive manufacturing have been studied. Regardless of the manufacturing method, the phase composition of steel consists of ferrite with an insignificant fraction of carbides (pearlite grains in both types of steel and single coarse precipitates in the additively fabricated one). It was shown that the studied steels are characterized by a strong temperature dependence on yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. At T = 77 K, both types of steel are characterized by high strength properties, which decrease with increasing test temperatures up to 300 K. In addition, all deformation curves are characterized by the presence of a yield drop and yield plateau over the entire temperature range under study (77 K–300 K). A decrease in test temperature from 300 K to 77 K leads to a change in the fracture micromechanism of the steels from a dimple fracture to a cleavage one. Despite the similar deformation behavior and strength properties, the additively fabricated steel possesses lower elongation to failure at 77 K due to an insignificant fraction of coarse precipitates, which assists the nucleation of brittle cracks. Cu-Ni-Si alloy is the key raw material for the lead frame of large integrated circuits. The disordered grain orientation of alloy billet, high hardening rate, residual stress, and poor surface quality of cold working strips seriously affect its processability. In order to improve the cold-working properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy, two kinds of C70250 copper alloy strips were produced through hot mold continuous casting (HMCC) and cold mold continuous casting (CMCC) technology. The effects of solidified microstructure on the cold-working deformation behavior, mechanical properties, and residual stress of the alloy were studied. The results show that C70250 copper alloys with columnar grain and equiaxed grain were prepared through HMCC and CMCC. After a 98% reduction in cold rolling, columnar grain strip surface quality was very good, and the elongation was still as high as 3.2%, which is 2.9 times that of equiaxed grain alloy. The residual stress of equiaxed grain strips reached 363 MPa, which is 2.7 times that of columnar grain strips. During the cold rolling process, equiaxed grain strips are prone to cause intersecting plane dislocations, stacking faults, shear bands, and grain breakage during large deformation cold rolling. The columnar grain strip causes parallel plane dislocations, stacking faults, and shearbands. Furthermore, the deformation structure was found to be uniform, and, ultimately, the alloy formed a fibrous structure. Therefore, the elongation and latter distortion of columnar grain strips improved after being put through large deformation cold rolling, which greatly reduced residual stress. A comprehensive study was performed of the deformation and temperature behavior during quasi-static tension, as well as the peculiarities of accumulation and dissipation of energy during plastic deformation. Microstructural analysis at the pre-fracture stage of pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy in the coarse grain (CG) and ultrafine-grained (UFG) states was also conducted. It was shown that substructural and dispersion hardening leads to a change in the regularities of dissipation and accumulation energies during deformation of the samples of the pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy in the UFG state. Some features of structural transformations during deformation of the pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy samples in the CG and UFG states were studied. A band and cellular-network and fragmented dislocation structure was formed in the case of the CG state, while large anisotropic fragments were formed in the UFG state, thus specifying a local softening of the material before fracture. Selective laser melting (SLM) is a promising manufacturing method for the construction of complicated precision parts. However, deformation of the overhang during the fabrication process and post treatment is still a common problem. In this paper, the effect of the scanning route on the residual stress and deformation of fabricated AlSi10Mg overhang specimens by SLM was investigated. Different scanning routes for the overhang including longitudinal direction, transverse direction, and the alternation between these two scanning routes in consecutive layers were studied by experiments within this study. Numerical simulation was utilized to measure the stress of the specimens while deformation prediction was used for the different scanning routes. Both the experimental and simulated results showed that the scanning route had a substantial influence on the residual stress and deformation of the specimens. The longitudinal scanning resulted in significant upward bending deformation of the overhang as it was cut from the baseplate. However, there was less deformation for the overhangs fabricated by transverse and alternating scanning routes. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) is a critical property of metastable β Ti alloys in aerospace applications. In this work, the HCF behavior and corresponding microscale deformation mechanisms of a metastable Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe (Ti55511) alloy with a basket-weave structure were investigated. HCF and its deformation mechanisms of a Ti55511 alloy were systematically studied in the deformed condition by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that the Ti55511 alloy exhibited an excellent HCF strength (107 cycles, Kt = 1, R = 0.06) of 738 MPa. The fractographic investigation demonstrated that fatigue striations and secondary cracks were the main features in the crack initiation zone. Dislocation analyses indicated that the HCF deformation of the basket-weave microstructure was mainly affected by the dislocation slipping of the primary α (αp) phase. In addition, the dislocation pile-up at the αp/βtrans interface led to crack initiation. EBSD analyses indicated that the prismatic type slip system of the αp phase was preferentially activated during the HCF deformation process of the Ti55511 alloy, followed by the basal type and pyramid type systems. The study of fatigue behaviors for nickel-base superalloys is very significant because fatigue damage results in serious consequences. In this paper, two kinds of heat treatment procedures (Pro.I and Pro.II) were taken to investigate the effect of heat treatment on microstructures and fatigue behaviors of a nickel-base superalloy. Fatigue behaviors were studied through total strain controlled mode at 650 °C. Manson-Coffin relationship and three-parameter power function were used to predict fatigue life. A good link between the cyclic/fatigue behavior and microscopic studies was established. The cyclic deformation mechanism and fatigue mechanism were discussed. The results show that the fatigue resistance significantly drops with the increase of total strain amplitudes. Manson-Coffin relationship can well predict the fatigue life for total strain amplitude from 0.5% to 0.8%. The fatigue resistance is related with heat treatment procedures. The fatigue resistance performance of Pro.I is better than that of Pro.II. The cyclic stress response behaviors are closely related to the changes of the strain amplitudes. The peak stress of the alloy gradually increases with the increase of total strain amplitudes. The characteristics of constitutive behavior and microstructure evolution of GW103K magnesium alloy were investigated via hot compression tests at a strain rate of 0.001–1 s−1 and a temperature of 623–773 K. The rheological stress of GW103K alloy decreased with increasing temperature or decreasing strain rate during hot deformation. Three models including the Johnson Cook (JC) model, the strain-compensated Arrhenius (SCA) model and back-propagation neural networks (BPNN) were applied to describe the constitutive relationships. Subsequently, the predictability and precision of the models were compared by evaluating the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square errors (RMSE), and relative errors (RE). Compared with the JC and SCA models, the BPNN model was more efficient and had higher prediction accuracy in describing flow stress behavior. Furthermore, EBSD maps confirmed that magnesium alloy easily causes dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during hot deformation. Hot deformation behaviors of an antibacterial 50Cr15MoVCu tool steel were studied. The flow stress curves presented three typical characteristics: (i) a single peak dynamic recrystallization curve, (ii) a monotone incremental work-hardening curve, and (iii) the equilibrium dynamic recovery curve. The flow stress increased with the increase of the deformation rate at each deformation temperature and decreased with the increase of the deformation temperature at the same deformation rate. The hot workability behavior of antibacterial Ti6Al4V-5Cu alloy was investigated using a hot compression experiment in the temperature range of 790–1040 °C and strain rate of 10−3–10 s−1 with a strain of 0.4. The deformation behavior of the alloy was characterized by Gleeble 3800 compression experiment, and the relationship among deformed microstructures and deformation parameters was established. The deformations of Ti6Al4V-5Cu alloy were temperature and strain rate-dependent. Higher temperature and lower strain rate made power dissipation efficiency (η) increase and reach 89%. The activation energies (Q) in the dual-phase (α + β) and single β phase regions were calculated as 175.43 and 159.03 kJ mol−1, respectively. In the dual (α + β) phase region, with an increase in strain rate, flow-softening behavior was dominated, however in the single β phase region such as processing at 940 °C. Flow stress increased slightly in which work-hardening behavior was dominated (especially between strain rates of 10−3–1 s−1). The deformation at various conditions exhibited different stress-strain profiles, providing an insight that work hardening and flow softening coexisted in Ti6Al4V-5Cu alloy. The relative intensity of oscillatory change in flow stress profile decreased as the strain rate decreased. Electron beam additive wire-feed manufacturing of Cu-3wt.%S-0.8wt.%Mn bronze thin wall on a stainless steel substrate has been carried out at heat input levels of 0.19, 0.25, and 0.31 kJ/mm. The microstructures of as-deposited metal ranged from low aspect ratio columnar with equiaxed grain layers to zig-zagged and high aspect ratio columnar, as depended on the heat input. Post-deposition annealing at 900 °C for 6 h resulted in recrystallization of the high aspect ratio columnar grains with further grain growth by boundary migration. Pre-deformation by 10% thickness reduction and then annealing at 900 °C for 6 h also allowed obtaining recrystallized grain structures with less fraction of twin boundaries but higher fraction of high-angle ones, as compared to those of only annealed sample. Axial compression-compression fatigue experiments on open-cell copper foams with different pore size were investigated in this paper. The effects of the strain amplitude on the fatigue properties were studied and found that there is an exponential relationship between the fatigue life and strain amplitude. The experimental results indicate that a smaller pore size is related to a lower fatigue life. The microstructures of failed copper foam tested at low stress amplitude were observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), suggests that different pore size related to different fatigue behavior. The complex deformation usually involves wide strain-rate change. However, few efforts have been devoted to investigate the effect of strain rate history on the tensile behavior of α + β titanium alloy. In present paper, tensile tests of Ti-6.6Al-3.3Mo-1.8Zr-0.29Si alloy were carried out under both constant and variable strain-rate conditions within the region from 10−3~500 s−1. A single stress pulse experimental technique was utilized to conduct the recovery tests. The strain-rate history effect was examined. It is found that the flow stress is independent on the strain rate history, though the alloy exhibits obvious positive strain rate sensitivity. The Taylor-Quinney coefficient of the plastic work converted to heat is proved as 0.9 at high strain rates. The cavitation fracture mechanism is revealed by microstructural observation over the full range explored. In basis of the experimental results and other pulished literatures, empirical Khan-Huang-Liang constitutive model was suitably modified to account for the strain-rate dependent behavior. Abstract The effect of cold rolling on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al- and C-containing CoCrFeNiMn-type high-entropy alloy was reported. The alloy with a chemical composition (at %) of (20–23) Co, Cr, Fe, and Ni; 8.82 Mn; 3.37 Al; and 0.69 C was produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis with subsequent induction. In the initial as-cast condition the alloy had an face centered cubic single-phase coarse-grained structure. Microstructure evolution was mostly associated with either planar dislocation glide at relatively low deformation during rolling (up to 20%) or deformation twinning and shear banding at higher strain. After 80% reduction, a heavily deformed twinned/subgrained structure was observed. A comparison with the equiatomic CoCrFeNiMn alloy revealed higher dislocation density at all stages of cold rolling and later onset of deformation twinning that was attributed to a stacking fault energy increase in the program alloy; this assumption was confirmed by calculations. In the initial as-cast condition the alloy had low yield strength of 210 MPa with yet very high uniform elongation of 74%. After 80% rolling, yield strength approached 1310 MPa while uniform elongation decreased to 1.3%. Aluminum single crystal with 99.999% purity was deformed at room temperature by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to 16 passes. Grain size and misorientation of processed samples were quantitatively characterized by TEM and EBSD. The results show that the refinement efficiency of high purity aluminum single crystal was poor in the initial stage. Extrusion by fewer ECAP passes (n ⩽ 8) resulted in only elongated grains containing a large number of subgrains and small misorientations between grains. Stable microstructures of nearly equiaxed grains with high misorientations were obtained by 15 passages, indicating that the initial extremely coarse grains and highly uniform grain orientation are not conducive to the accumulation of strain energy. The mechanical properties of the high-strength low-alloy pipeline steels were mainly controlled by the subsequent phase transformations after rolling. The influence of hot uniaxial compression on the phase transformation of acicular ferrite was explored by viewing of the deformation degree, the deformation temperature, and the strain rate. The results show that the increase of deformation amounts raises the transformation starting and finishing temperature during the subsequent cooling and also promotes the polygonal ferrite transformation, which leads to the decrease of Vickers hardness accordingly. With the increasing of the deformation temperature, the achieved microstructure becomes coarsened and thus decreases the hardness. As the strain rate increases, the microstructure is refined and thus the hardness increases gradually; increasing the strain rate appropriately is beneficial to the refinement of the microstructure. The effects of a high-velocity impact on the microstructure, phase transformation and mechanical property of aged Ti49Ni51 alloy are investigated. The transformation behavior and microstructure along the impact direction after impact emerge with regionalization characteristics, including a deformed region near the crater (0–4 mm) and an un-deformed region of the distal crater (5–6 mm).
