During the 1960s and 1970s, the Russian conceptual artist Ilya Kabakov was a galvanizing figure in Moscow's underground art community, ultimately gaining international prominence as the “leader” of a band of artists known as the Moscow Conceptual Circle. Throughout this time, he created texts that he would distribute among his friends, and by the late 1990s his written production amounted to hundreds of pages. Devoted to themes that range from the “cosmism” of pre-Revolutionary Russian modernism to the philosophical implications of Moscow's garbage, Kabakov's handmade booklets were typed out on paper, then stapled or sewn together using rough butcher paper for their covers. Among these writings are faux Socialist Realist verses, theoretical explorations, art historical analyses, accompaniments to installation projects, and transcripts of dialogues between the artist and literary theorists, critics, journalists, and other artists. This volume offers for the first time in English the most significant texts written by Kabakov. En 1998, à l'initiative du Lieu, centre en art actuel, se tenait à Québec une rencontre internationale relatant l'art action des vingt dernières années, en effectuant un retour critique sur les années soixante et soixante-dix. This study employs cognitive theory as a heuristic framework to interrogate the agency of female types in select Italian Renaissance paintings, with emphasis on Venus, Medusa, the Amazon, Boccaccio's Lady Fiammetta/Cleopatra, Susanna, the Magdalene, and the Madonna. The study disrupts assumptions about the identity of sitters and readings of paintings as it challenges paradigms of female representation. It interrogates why certain paintings were crafted, by whom and for whom. Works are placed in the context of meta-painting, with stress on the cognitive decisions negotiated between patron and artist. The ludic aspects of several paintings are examined with a fine grain semiotic approach to expand their iconographies. Psychoanalytic readings are unpacked, based on the flawed mythological metaphors and incomplete clinical studies of Sigmund Freud's theorizing. The rubric of female agency is deliberately selected to unify popular but enigmatic master paintings of disparate subjects.

Responding to many recent calls for redress and restitution, Richardson summarises the historical and current situation and attributes its problematics to the fact that theorists and historians have taken the concept art as a generic that includes both design and craft – which are actually and validly distinguishable from art by application of the concept function/al ­– or else ignored the two entirely. Considering the concept function/al, he maintains, calls into question the view that the three may be sub-classes of the one class: whereas in a work of art, typically there is a resolution of the tension between form and content, in works of design and craft the resolution is between form and function. How this recognition can clarify the issue informs the entire book. The book's other major thesis is the realisation that aesthetic values are inherently human and that, therefore, they apply not only to art but to life in general. Far from being frivolous or a mere ‘emotion', the aesthetic is a sense of equivalent psychic status to sight and hearing ­and, like them, is employed at almost every moment of our daily lives – which fact grounds art, design and craft deeply in human life. This is reflected in the universal use of the human form (including the exhibition of sexual characteristics) in art. The eternal conflict between making art and making a living from making art is examined and contrasted to the rarely-recognised, but positive, role of design in planning and industry. Richardson also critiques common theories of representation and composition, including ‘creativity', Albertian perspective and scientific and geometric theories of beauty and composition; also the relevance of the camera and the computer in the field.

Reliant on the patronage of the wealthy, it is during this period that Beethoven penned many fine works. What ties western art together?
