India is a global hotspot for irrigation-induced groundwater withdrawal, leading to widespread lowering of water levels, in turn resulting in disproportionate access to irrigation supplies among farming communities. Efforts to mitigate the situation, however, have fallen short, largely due to technocentric vision (e.g. microirrigation adoption) of the regulatory authorities (RAs), which does little to integrate the vast groundwater-dependent socioecologies with the decision making system. In view of that, we invite the RAs to deliberate upon a cap-and-trade mechanism that proposes to mobilize the farmers at every aspect of planning and execution, while to tackling multiple challenges simultaneously: (a) restrict groundwater pumping to a pre-defined safe level (cap), (b) creating a shared space/quotas for all to pump (allocation); and (c) making provisions for trade of allocations. The latter further augments farmers' access to groundwater (and irrigation). Using a systematic bibliometric analysis of relevant world literature and contextual appraisal of groundwater-irrigation landscape in India, we develop a conceptual framework of cap-and-trade in three parts. In the first Pre-implementation stage, we emphasize a reality check study to assess ground conditions, if favorable for a cap-and-trade approach (existing social, economic, institutional circumstances). Next, in the Implementation stage, (1) we recommend an integrated hydrogeological-hydrometeorological modeling to determine flexible capping arrangements, with the possibility of delineating certain priority regions (coastal ecosystems); (2) for allocations, a reasonable fraction of the cap over a defined period; we envision a thoroughly participatory arrangement, centering on four action areas: identifying, informing, consulting, and involving the farmers, alongside all stakeholders engaged in the groundwater-irrigation decision making; (3) for trade, we urge the RAs to create win-win situations for both the sellers and buyers; develop the transaction protocols on certain foundational principles (e.g. simplicity, transparency and consistency); strengthening of local institutions, and development of targeted financial support schemes. We consider the third part of the narrative, Post-implementation stage, as a real game changer, comprising of a monitoring, auditing (performance benchmarking) component coupled with multitiered outreach-mentoring drives that demonstrate to the farmers the benefits of becoming part of the cap-and-trade program. Overall, a main motivation to present this research is to shatter the age-old socio-cognitive beliefs/taboos around groundwater pumping (My land, My Water), breaking the hegemony of the water sellers (rich/wealthy large landholder clans), to potentially, create a social norm whereby the farmers realize the value of restricting groundwater pumping and sharing for mutual prosperity., (© 2023. Concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) like arsenic, uranium, iron, and nitrate in the groundwater of the Majha Belt (including Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot districts) in Punjab, India were measured to evaluate the health risks associated with its consumption and daily use. The average concentrations of these elements in some locations exceeded the WHO-recommended values. Arsenic and iron toxicity levels were found to be higher in the Amritsar district, while uranium toxicity was more prevalent in Tarn Taran. The Trace Element Evaluation Index suggests that Amritsar is one of the districts most affected by toxic elements. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) guidelines, the HQ values of U, Fe, and nitrate were less than one, indicating that there is no non-carcinogenic health risk for adults and children. However, the hazard quotient (HQ) value for arsenic was greater than one, indicating a higher possibility of health risk due to arsenic in the study area. The total hazard index values of 44.10% of samples were greater than four for arsenic, indicating that people in the Majha Belt are at a very high health risk due to the usage of water for drinking and domestic purposes. The cancer risk assessment values for arsenic in children (5.69E + 0) and adults (4.07E + 0) were higher than the accepted limit of USEPA (10 -4 to 10 -6 ) in the Majha Belt. The average radiological cancer risk values of U for children and adults were 8.68E-07 and 9.45E-06, respectively, which are well below the permissible limit of 1.67 × 10 -4 suggested by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of DAE, India. In this study, groundwater irrigation potential zones are identified by measuring an integrated irrigation water quality index using a GIS platform in the Vishwamitri River Basin (VRB) region, Gujarat, India. Classification of different irrigation potential zones is about the collective paraphernalia of thematic maps, namely, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Na + , Cl - , and HCO 3 , which principally regulate the groundwater quality for irrigation. The EC, SAR, and chloride values are > 3000 µS/cm, > 9 meq/L, and > 10 meq/L, respectively, indicating 98.78%, 41.78%, and 84.88% of the total area, respectively, belong to groundwater both hazardous and unsuitable for irrigation. Similarly, 39.55% of the total area is unsuitable for irrigation due to its high Na - , which principally regulate the groundwater quality for irrigation. The EC, SAR, and chloride values are > 3000 µS/cm, > 9 meq/L, and > 10 meq/L, respectively, indicating 98.78%, 41.78%, and 84.88% of the total area, respectively, belong to groundwater both hazardous and unsuitable for irrigation. Similarly, 39.55% of the total area is unsuitable for irrigation due to its high Na + concentration. The permeability, porosity, and infiltration risk usually appear when excessive sodium ions reduce the rate of flow of irrigation water which moves in the lower soil zones. Similarly, high bicarbonate and chloride concentrations have been denoted to hamper the development of several crops causing symptoms analogous to lime-induced chlorosis due to toxic effects of the salt. The final irrigation potential map is marked by four levels, such as "most suitable," "moderately suitable," "moderately unsuitable," and "unsuitable for irrigation." Approximately, 56.69% of the total VRB region are covered with unsuitable for irrigation purposes. In such areas, irrigation must be avoided in usual conditions, and the halophytes, namely, Khati palak (Atriplex stocksii), Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album), and Rudravanti (Cressa cretica) should be recommended with high soil permeability and proper drainage facilities. The soil must be highly permeable for groundwaters with high salinity and sodicity. The water scarcity and deteriorating water quality are major issues of concern to the agrarian state of Punjab, India. The focus of the study is to assess the status of drinking water and sanitation systems of Punjab using an exhaustive dataset of 1575 drinking water samples from 433 sampling locations in 63 urban local bodies of Punjab. Water security index (WSI) indicate that out of 63 urban local bodies, 13 are categorized into good class, 31 fall under fair class, and 19 fall under poor class. The access indicator under sanitation dimension shows that Bathinda region has maximum sewerage network coverage relative to other regions, whereas ca. 50% of the ULBs in Amritsar region do not have sewerage facility. It is clearly depicted that the variation in WSI is mainly attributable to sanitation dimension (10-22.5) as variation in water supply dimension (29-35) is relatively less. Hence, emphasis on indicators and variables of sanitation dimension is required for the improvement of overall WSI. The assessment of qualitative aspects of drinking water and health risk depicts that the drinking water quality of southwest part of the state (i.e. Malwa region) is under good quality class contrary to its poor groundwater quality. Kapurthala district shows high health risk due to the presence of trace metals despite being classified into good class within water security index. The drinking water quality is better and health risks are minimal in regions where drinking water is supplied via treated surface water sources (e.g. Bathinda region). Furthermore, the results of health risk assessment correlate with M[Formula: see text]-Water Quality Index outcome owing to presence of trace metals in groundwater above permissible limits. The current research is focused on detecting a river basin suitable for agriculture and priority for management using a new clustering tool of groundwater quality with fuzzy logic technique in R and Geographical Information System. A new fuzzy clustering-soft computing technique has been executed to determine the different hydrochemical zones considering 13 essential parameters such as electrical conductivity, hardness, chloride, sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium carbonate, soluble sodium percent, magnesium hazard, permeability index, potential salinity, residual sodium bicarbonate, Kelly's ratio, synthetic harmful coefficient, and exchangeable sodium percentage. The derived fuzzy C-mean clustering (FCM) outperformed other available hard computing techniques like hierarchical clustering, K-means clustering, and agglomerative clustering. It divided the sampling sites into 2 clustering groups (FCM I and FCM II) which has been validated using fuzzy silhouette index (0.85), the partition coefficient (0.76), the partial entropy (0.68), and the modified partition coefficient (0.52). The hydrogeochemical analysis confirmed that the rock-water interaction, chemical weathering, and ion exchange process are predominant in the aquifer system of the study area. According to the correlation plots, the studied groundwater samples largely evolved from [Formula: see text], mixed [Formula: see text] types, and [Formula: see text] types. The spatial distribution map and the hydrochemical analysis also gives a clear depiction of the fluoride (> 1.0 mg/l) and high iron (> 0.3 mg/l) contamination in groundwater quality, making it unsuitable for both drinking and irrigation. A fuzzy EDAS priority map has been prepared based on all the irrigation suitability parameters which concludes that the groundwater at the upstream and downstream section of the basin requires the most attention. Based on the highest priority for management, five zones have been delineated: very high (5.98%), high (22.31%), medium (16.39%), low (32.30%), and very low (23.02). The northern Ganga basin is one of the most densely populated basins in the world. Most agricultural and industrial contaminants drained in the river length are likely to be accumulated in the lower part of the Ganga basin. In this study, we have used ten parameters obtained from 495 sampling locations, besides using long-term climate data (GLDAS_NOAH025_M) to understand the irrigation suitability using the TOPSIS model. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model using TOPSIS has been used to make the best choices from the available finite number of alternatives based on their ranking. The entropy weights for the irrigation suitability parameters such as electrical conductivity (Ec), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), magnesium hardness (MH), sodium percent (Na%), total hardness (TH), Kelly's ratio (KR), permeability index (PI), chloride concentration (Cl - ), groundwater level fluctuation (GWLF), and the Lang factor (Df) are found to be 0.08, 0.14, 0.02, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, 0.01, 0.32, 0.29, and 0.01, respectively. We find that SAR, Cl - , and GWLF control the water quality for irrigation in the Lower Ganga basin since these parameters have relatively higher entropy weights (more than 0.10). The results obtained from the computed performance index or the closeness coefficient show that the area percent having very good and good groundwater quality for irrigation in the Lower Ganga basin is 77.03% and 22.97% respectively. The land-use change dynamics for the between 2000 and 2015 estimated using the transition matrix shows a positive percentage change for settlement (133.50%), wetland (35.04%), and bare area (0.98%); however, several other classes such as the agriculture (- 0.85%), forest (- 0.49%), grassland (- 14.38%), sparse vegetation (- 11.39%), and water (- 4.12%) show a decreasing trend. The highest amount of percentage change was observed in settlement areas which were contributed by other land-use classes such as agriculture (694.43 km 2 ), water (41.61 km 2 ), forest (16.77 km 2 ), and grassland (1.86 km 2 ). Groundwater quality in Yalamlam basin, Saudi Arabia, was appraised for drinking, irrigation, livestock and poultry applications by international standards, drinking water quality index (DWQI), irrigation water quality (IWQ) parameters, and irrigation water quality index (IWQI) calculations. Potential non-carcinogenic health risks due to high NO 3 - water were assessed for various age groups using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) models. Groundwater samples (n = 40) were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and major and minor constituents. The average total dissolved solids (TDS), EC, and total hardness (TH) in the groundwater are 3478 µS/cm, 1739 mg/l, and 1240 mg/l, respectively. High salinity, TH, NO - water were assessed for various age groups using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) models. Groundwater samples (n = 40) were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and major and minor constituents. The average total dissolved solids (TDS), EC, and total hardness (TH) in the groundwater are 3478 µS/cm, 1739 mg/l, and 1240 mg/l, respectively. High salinity, TH, NO 3 in this aquifer restrict the usage of groundwater for drinking. DWQI values suggest that only 47.5% of samples are potable. According to USEPA recommendation, 72.5%, 80%, and 100% of samples for NO - , and F - in this aquifer restrict the usage of groundwater for drinking. India is the second largest sugarcane-producing nation with water footprints ~ 104 BCM/year of which 80% met from groundwater of deep wells. The large-scale groundwater management practices were found mostly untenable affecting the sugarcane agrarian and associated sectors. We developed a cell-level (2 km × 2 km) decision support system employing the integrated hydro-geophysical investigations in sugarcane agro-watershed (399 km 2 ) beset over granitic aquifer systems of Tattihalla River watershed, Southern India. The refined hydrogeological conceptual model derived from electrical resistivity tomography and groundwater level (head) has been accounted into the numerical modeling. The model was run on transient mode for four stress periods during 2015-2017 and validated with calculated and observed heads. The normalized RMS error 7.57% of the validated model conveys its robustness and estimates groundwater budget at the demarcated 77 cells. The theoretical scenarios for water level projections against the increased groundwater pumping rates of 10%, 25%, and 50% were generated. It showed a declining trend of water level for the projected 10-year period with varied magnitude and vulnerability for drought conditions. The different time periods of water level touching the basement (i.e., dry borewell) infers a distinct hydrogeological property of an individual cell advocating to adapt a cell level management plan. The present study envisions the influences of land use dynamics on the spatial trend of groundwater depth levels over a period of two decades in the south region of NCT Delhi, India. The findings have inferred that among five major LULC categories, built-up has shown a sprawling trend (+2.17 km 2 /year) from the north, northeastern, and central portions to the confined patches observed in the south and southwest fringes of South Delhi from 2001 to 2021. Likewise, vegetation class has also witnessed significant increment (+1.91 km 2 /year) to the peripheral boundary, i.e., southern, southwest/eastern fringes, and central portions under recent initiatives of city forests, plantation drives, and urban green spaces programs. On the contrary, a negative rate of change has been observed in fallow land (-2.78 km 2 /year), agriculture (-1.22 km 2 /year), and water bodies (-0.07 km 2 /year). LULC transition matrix has also showed prominent conversion of fallow land into vegetation and built-up class, and change of vegetation into built-up, and fallow land category. Subsequently, corresponding LULC maps have been superimposed with long-term trends of groundwater depth levels (as spatial contours). For entire South Delhi region, depth to water levels ranged from 2.02 to 66.45 meters below ground level (mbgl) where shallower depths followed a negative trend and remain persistent throughout the time period in north and northeastern fringes. Higher fluctuations in groundwater depletion with positive trends directly get influenced with allied land use transitions such as a steady increase in built-up area and steeper depth levels (> 40 mbgl) as observed in central, southwestern, and southern parts. Moreover, buffer peripheries in the proximity of groundwater monitoring stations viz., Hauz Khas, Pushp Vihar, Jamali, Gadaipur, and Bhatti Kalan have observed deeper groundwater levels allied to built-up expansion. Thus, groundwater depletion trends can be ascribed to the incessant conversion of recharging areas into impervious zones along with uneven distribution of groundwater usage and supply. Conversely, expanding vegetative land has also shown improved groundwater depth levels. River water pollution and water-related health problems are common issues across the world. The present study aims to examine the Jalangi River's water quality to assess its suitability for drinking purposes and associated human health risks. The 34 water samples were collected from the source to the mouth of Jalangi River in 2022 to depict the spatial dynamics while another 119 water samples (2012-2022) were collected from a secondary source to portray the seasonal dynamics. Results indicate better water quality in the lower reach of the river in the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Principal component analysis reveals that K + , NO 3 - , and total alkalinity (TA) play a dominant role in controlling the water quality of the study region, while, CaCO 3 , Ca 2+ , and EC in the pre-monsoon, EC, TDS, Na + , and TA in the monsoon, and EC, TDS and TA in the post-monsoon controlled the water quality. The results of ANOVA reveal that BOD, Ca 2+ , and CaCO 3 concentrations in water have significant spatial dynamics, whereas pH, BOD, DO, Cl - , SO 4 2- , Na + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , CaCO 3 , TDS, TA, and EC have seasonal dynamics (p < 0.05). The water quality index depicts that the Jalangi River's water quality ranged from 6.23 to 140.83, i.e., excellent to unsuitable for drinking purposes. Human health risk analysis shows that 32.35% of water samples have non-carcinogenic health risks for all three groups of people, i.e., adults, children, and infants while only 5.88% of water samples have carcinogenic health risks for adults and children. Evaluation of aquifer potential is essential, as the potable water demand has increased globally over the last few decades. The present study delineated different zones of groundwater potential and groundwater quality of the Kallada River basin (KRB) in southern India, using geo-environmental and hydrogeochemical parameters, respectively. Geo-environmental variables considered include relative relief, land use/land cover, drainage density, slope angle, geomorphology, and geology, while hydrogeochemical parameters include pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Cl - , Fe 3+ , and Al 3+ concentrations. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used for categorizing groundwater potential and quality zones. Nearly 50% of KRB is categorized as very high and high groundwater potential zones, occupying the western and midland regions. The central and west-central parts of KRB are characterized by excellent groundwater quality zones, while the eastern and western parts are characterized by good and poor groundwater quality zones, respectively. By integrating the groundwater potential and groundwater quality, sustainable groundwater management is observed to be necessary at about 54% of the basin, where site-specific groundwater management structures such as percolation ponds, injection wells, and roof water harvesting have been proposed using a rule-based approach. Groundwater is one of the important sources available for drinking, agricultural, domestic, and various other purposes in the study area. Study area is having agricultural importance and is famous for Basmati rice production in the world. In order to assess water suitability for irrigation and drinking purposes, 25 sampling sites were selected and water samples were collected from handpumps, borewells and motors from May 2022 to June 2022. Fifteen physico-chemical parameters and water quality index (WQI) was calculated to assess the drinking water suitability. The results obtained then compared with the BIS (2012) and WHO drinking water guidelines. For irrigation water suitability, irrigation water quality index (IWQI) and other indices were calculated. Heavy metal health risk assessment was also evaluated using target hazard quotient (THQ), carcinogenic risks (CR), non-carcinogenic risks, heavy metal pollution index (HPI), etc. Study found 60% of water samples under poor category of WQI. All water samples were found suitable for irrigation purposes according to different indices except for permeability index for which only 32% samples were found suitable. IWQI classifies 52%, 32%, and 12% of water samples under moderate, low, and no restriction category respectively. Groundwater of the study area found to be contaminated with copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) while low contamination of zinc (Zn) and arsenic (As) was found according to heavy metal evaluation index (HEI). High contamination of chromium (HPI= 9740.8) and lead (HPI=188) was recorded as per HPI. HQ value for men, women, and children in case of zinc were found safe while HQ values for copper and lead in all population groups were found at risk. Overall, the study area was found highly contaminated with the lead, copper, and chromium concentrations. The availability of potable drinking water is a tough challenge particularly in arid and semiarid regions as it is closely linked to human health. Fluoride and nitrate are widely reported concern in different districts of Rajasthan. Therefore, this study was engaged in the Churu District of Rajasthan to appraise the water quality especially in reference to fluoride and nitrate and health risk associated with its consumption. The overall potability of water was evaluated using water quality index and PCA indicated major sources responsible for water contamination. A total of 515 groundwater samples were collected from different locations of Churu District and16 water quality parameters were analyzed as per the standard protocol of APHA. The results showed that the values for all analyzed water quality parameters were greater than the prescribed limit of WHO and BIS. F - levels in 191 samples and nitrate levels in 147 samples were found to be over than BIS-acceptable limit. The results of the fluoride and nitrate risk assessment revealed that the Hazard Index value was greater than one of 393 groundwater samples for males, 403 groundwater samples for females, and 397 groundwater samples for children, indicating that drinking groundwater poses a significant health risk in the study area. Only 46.02 percent of groundwater samples may be utilized for drinking, according to the water quality index (WQI), while the remaining are unfit for drinking purpose without treatment. The huge number of variables impacting the overall quality and chemistry of groundwater were reduced using principal component analysis (PCA), which identified four key components that account for 69.11 percent of variance in the dataset. This study examines the uranium, fluoride, and nitrate dispositions in groundwater as well as potential health risks in Kota district, Rajasthan, India. Total 198 groundwater samples were collected in both dry and wet periods and analyzed for physicochemical parameters along with U, F - , and NO 3 - using standard methods. Wetlands are the most productive and dynamic ecosystems, which have continuously been influenced by social and economic development. As a result, the pollution of wetland surface water and groundwater in adjacent regions has become an emerging global issue that requires constant monitoring and assessment. The current study investigates the natural and anthropogenic processes that influence surface and groundwater chemistry in and around Saman wetland (a Ramsar site) in the Ganges River Basin, India. Various physicochemical parameters are analyzed, and different hydrochemical indices are utilized to evaluate surface and groundwater quality for domestic and irrigation purposes. It is observed that the waters are alkaline in nature and dominated by moderately hard to hard types. An increase in the concentration of nitrate (NO 3 - ) content in studied groundwater samples is mainly governed by geogenic processes. The Suruliyar sub basin in Tamil Nadu, India, was monitored for the assessment of water and soil quality. Surface water, groundwater, and soil samples were collected during the pre-monsoon (June 2016) and post-monsoon (December 2016) seasons within the sub basin area and analyzed for various physical, chemical, and biological properties, namely, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium, magnesium, sodium, nitrate, sulfate, fluoride, chloride, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and total and fecal coliform. All the values were compared with Indian and global standards, and the values for each parameter were within the permissible limits. However, some samples were edging toward the upward limit. Fecal coliforms (14 to 36 counts per 100 ml) were present in the river water, thus indicating anthropogenic contamination. Correlation analysis confirmed that TDS was significantly positively correlated with most of the cations and anions. Groundwater was assessed using several indices, such as the Piper diagram, United States Salinity Laboratory diagram, sodium adsorption ratio, and sodium percentage. Results showed that all the groundwater samples could be used for irrigation purposes; however, the chloride contents exceeded the permissible limit. Soil analysis results showed that all nutrients were within the permissible limits. Drought assessment showed the existence of both dry and wet years occurring most frequently, which might have a strong influence on the quality of water and soil parameters. The hydrosphere although covering almost 70% of the Earth contributes only 3% of fresh water out of which groundwater covers almost 98%. The presence of some unwanted substance in this limited natural resource causes pollution when the substance causes serious harm to human beings and to the total ecosystem in a way. Arsenic is such a pollutant that is most naturally released in groundwater and long-term exposure to As-rich groundwater causes skin lesions and often leads to different types of cancers in humans. Rupnagar district in the Malwa region of Punjab is situated alongside the river Satluj which is one of the five important tributaries of Indus. The lowest reported concentration of As in this district is 10 µg/L and the highest is 91 µg/L. The higher values of As (> 50 µg/L) that are above the permissible limit of IS 10500, 2004 in drinking water, are dominantly found in the western and south-western parts of the district. The average hazard quotient (HQ) indicates high risk for the consumers of the As-polluted groundwater in the district. The present study deals with the major cause of high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater and its correlation with intensive agriculture in the Rupnagar district. Owing to the large size of the district, GIS techniques like ArcGIS 10.4.1 and QGIS 3.22.8 software were used for analysis in this study. The study reveals that high As concentration (> 50 µg/L) is mostly found in agricultural lands and moderate concentration of As (10-50 µg/L) in groundwater is distributed all over the district and are mostly reported from the urbanised areas. Overall, the water table shows a declining trend but no such decline is observed in the western and south-western parts of the district. As pollution in groundwater can also be caused due to water level decline owing to intensive agriculture and rapid water abstraction though As is naturally sourced in groundwater. The quality of groundwater in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh is poorly studied despite the fact that it is the only supply of water for both drinking and irrigation and people use it without any pre-treatment. The evaluation of groundwater quality and suitability for drinking and irrigation is presented in this study. According to the findings, the majority of the samples had higher EC, TDS, and TH levels, indicating that they should be avoided for drinking and irrigation. The positive correlation coefficient between chemical variability shows that the water chemistry of the studied region is influenced by geochemical and biological causes. According to the USSL (United States Salinity Laboratory) diagram, most of the samples fall under the C2-S1 and C3-S1 moderate to high salt categories. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and analyse the water quality in the Tulsishyam region in terms of corrosive and scaling properties. Thermal water samples (TWS), groundwater samples (GWS), and riverwater samples (RWS) were collected and analysed for a variety of geochemical parameters in various locations throughout the Tulsishyam region. The pH of such thermal springs ranges between 7.1 and 7.4, suggesting that they are neutral, and the temperature ranges between 39 and 42 °C. To determine the corrosive and scaling properties of water, various indices such as the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), the Puckorius Scaling Index (PSI), the Ryznar Stability Index (RSI), and the Larson Index (LaI) are used. According to the indices described previously, all water samples are extremely corrosive to intolerably corrosive with a significant abrasion rate. The chemical composition of the fluids is also investigated in relation to the weathering processes. Sulphate has a significant negative link with chlorine and a weak correlation with bicarbonate, whereas chlorine has a moderate correlation with bicarbonate, according to multivariate analysis. The present study assessed the human health risk exposure from the consumption of poor quality groundwater in the Lucknow area, a part of Central Ganga alluvial plain in India. Around 27 (n = 27) groundwater samples were collected from the study area. The analytical results of the samples (n = 27) collected indicate silicate and carbonate weathering is the dominant process along with cation exchange, sulfide oxidation, and reverse ion exchange. The type of groundwater is Ca 2 -Na-HCO 3 - type having all cations and anions within permissible WHO limits except for iron (Fe 2+ ) and nitrate (NO 3 - ). The high concentrations of Fe 2 and NO 3 - in samples indicate the possibility of a non-geogenic point source for the same in an urban-influenced environment. The ionic concentration of dissolved constituents is used in weighted overlay analysis to generate the water quality index (WQI). WQI indicates that most urban areas (~ 98.52%) have fallen in the good to excellent category except few situated in the highly populated parts of Lucknow. The ionic concentrations of Fe 2+ and NO 3 - have been further used to estimate human health risk by integrating regional urban population density data in Lucknow. Groundwater contamination is a major concern in front of the scientific community because it is directly related to human health, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, a comprehensive study was engaged to evaluate the water quality, potability, and human health risk assessment due to the consumption of fluoride- and nitrate-contaminated water in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. In order to assess the water quality, samples were collected from 87 locations in the study region, and a total of 16 parameters were analyzed as per the standard methods. The results showed that the value of the number of quality parameters consisting of pH, EC, TDS, fluoride, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, and total alkalinity was higher than the recommended limit of BIS and WHO. The fluoride in 11% and nitrate in 6% of samples were observed to exceed the permissible limit of WHO. The results of risk assessment due to fluoride and nitrate revealed that hazard index values of 71% of groundwater samples for males, 78% of groundwater samples for females, and 75% of groundwater samples for children were greater than 1, indicating the significant health hazard due to consumption of groundwater. The water quality index (WQI) found that 39% of groundwater samples belong to categories that cannot be used for drinking purposes. Principal component analysis (PCA) reduced the large number of variables affecting the overall quality and chemistry of groundwater and determined four major components which account for 69.50% variance in the data. Around the globe, seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifer is a significant problem. Excessive groundwater extraction because of population growth, industrialization, tourism, and other anthropogenic activities and geogenic processes initiates and accelerates this problem. The contaminated groundwater impacts the health, economic activities, and social and cultural development of coastal regions. This work aims to explore the current status and a holistic comprehending review of geophysical studies applied to delineate the seawater intrusion in the high-quality coastal aquifers in India, as well as its origin and causes, mitigation strategies, and recent advancements in geophysical techniques to access the qualitative and quantitative properties of the complex aquifer system. In arid and semiarid regions, groundwater is required for the drinking, agriculture, and industrial activities due to scarcity of surface water. Groundwater contaminated with high concentrations of fluoride and nitrate can severely affect human health in these regions. Twenty-eight groundwater samples from rural habitations of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, India, were collected in March 2018 and subjected to analysis for water quality parameters. Fluoride and nitrate concentrations in groundwater varied from 0 to 5.74 mg/L and 10.22-519.64 mg/L, respectively. Nitrate content of about 86% samples and fluoride content of about 54% exceeded the permissible limit of Bureau of Indian Standards (IS:10,500) as well as World Health Organization standards. All groundwater samples belonged to poor to unfit drinking water quality index. Principle component analysis elucidates the anthropogenic contribution to high nitrate concentrations observed in this area. Noncarcinogenic human health risk evaluated from high nitrate and fluoride in drinking water for children, men, and women points to the fact that noncarcinogenic risk is exceeding the allowable limit to human health. The predominating hydrochemical facies in the area is Na + -HCO 3 - -Cl - followed by Na + -Mg 2+ -HCO 3 . Groundwater sources are drastically changing in their quantity and quality depending on local and regional level natural and anthropogenic factors, influencing their suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes. The objective of this study is to characterize the hydrochemistry and assess the groundwater quality in the fluvial deltaic plains of Cauvery river basin, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 50 georeferenced groundwater samples were collected across Needamangalam block of Thiruvarur district and analyzed for major ions and hydrochemical processes. The results showed an ionic sequence of Cl - > Na + > HCO 3 - > Mg 2+ > Ca 2+ > CO 3 2- based on their relative proportions. The scatter diagram indicated that groundwater chemistry was mostly influenced by weathering dominance followed by evaporation and silicate weathering. The dominant hydro-chemical facies were Na 4 2- > K + based on their relative proportions. Groundwater contamination becomes an alarming threat to the provision of ecosystem services and natural resources. A very high level of groundwater contamination has been observed in the northeastern states particularly in North Tripura district. Therefore, the present study considered the region as a case study to evaluate the hydrogeochemical facies, heavy metal pollution and irrigation indices, and their impact on human health. For the investigation, we have collected a total of 35 groundwater samples from North Tripura district. Hydrogeochemical facies through Piper plot reflect Ca 2+ -Mg 2+ -HCO 3 - and Na + as dominant water types. Gibbs plot identifies the dominance of rock-water interaction process in groundwater hydrochemistry. Geochemical plots indicate the dominance of silicate weathering, ion exchange and carbonate dissolution processes in groundwater mineralisation. The order of trace metal contaminations follows Fe > As > Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb. Results of heavy metal indices suggest above 80% samples are at high risk due to high Fe contamination. The risk of the heavy metal indices is associated with rising elevation in southern part of North Tripura. Findings of health risk assessment study imply that children face much carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks than adults because of unsafe levels of Fe and As. Multivariate statistical tools are applied to unravel interrelationships among all ions and trace metals as well as probable hydrogeochemical processes in groundwater. Irrigation suitability of groundwater has also been evaluated by using irrigation suitability parameters, i.e., Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Permeability Index (PI), Kelly Ratio (KR), Percentage Sodium (% Na), and Magnesium Hazards (MH). Based on the analysis, it was determined that most of the samples were suitable for irrigation in the area. Irrigation practices are found to be unsuitable for Kelly's ratio of 37.5%, MH 60%, and RSC 55% samples. WPI and Pearson's correlation matrix (PCA) have suggested a significant linear relationship among the water quality parameters based on the test results. A total of fifty groundwater samples were collected in the western part of Nizamabad district, Telangana State, India. The results obtained were compared with the IS 10500 standard, which shows more than 80% of the samples are unfit for drinking purposes. The results were also analyzed to know the irrigation suitability, where about 80% of the samples are fit for agricultural use. For the major ions in groundwater quality for irrigation and drinking, contradictory locations exist which are majorly caused by geogenic (silicate weathering minerals) and anthropogenic (fertilizers, manure, and industrial effluents) sources. The hydrochemical facies of CaCl and mixed CaMgCl and NaCl water types were dominant in pre- and post-monsoon seasons. The spatial distribution diagrams of the major ions were high concentration in northern areas followed by western and south-western portions. As per the groundwater quality of pollution index (GQPI), most of the study region (62%) comes under the low contamination zone and the rest (38%) under the moderate to unacceptable zone. We assessed groundwater pollution index (GPI) and groundwater quality of coastal aquifers from Tiruchendur in South India for drinking and irrigation by evaluating the physico-chemical parameters of 35 samples of mainly Na-Cl type in an area of 470 km 2 with respect to the World Health Organization (WHO) standard as well as by estimating different indices such as total hardness (TH), sodium percentage (Na%), magnesium ratio (MR), Kelley's ratio index (KR), potential salinity (PS), Langelier saturation index (LSI), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), sodium adsorption rate (SAR), permeability index (PI), and the irrigation water quality index (IWQI). Minimal influence of aquifer lithology and the dominant influence of evaporation on groundwater chemistry reflected the semi-arid climate of the study area. Electrical conductivity (EC) of about 89% of the samples across 418 km 2 exceeded the permissible limit and Ca values of 74% of samples, however, remained within the allowable limit for drinking. More chloride was caused by influx of seawater and salt leaching and higher K was due to excessive fertilizer usage for agriculture. The spatial distribution map created using inverse distance weighting (IDW) method shows that the suitable groundwater is present close to the river basin. GPI values between 0.40 and 4.7, with an average of 1.5, classify insignificant pollution in 43% of the study region and the groundwater suitable for drinking purposes. In addition, 17% of the groundwater samples are also marginally suitable for drinking. The irrigation water quality indices provided contradictory assessments. Indices of TH, Na%, MR, PS, and LSI suggested 32-95% of the samples as unsuitable for irrigation, whereas the indices of RSC, SAR, and PI grouped 72-100% samples as permissible for irrigation. The IWQI map, however, indicated that the groundwater from more than half of the study area are not apt for irrigation and the groundwater of about one-third of the area could only be applied to salt-resistant plants.

Water quality index and chemometric methods were employed to assess the groundwater quality and contamination sources in the upper Ganges basin (UGB) and lower Ganges basin (LGB) as groundwater is a sole source for drinking, domestic and agricultural uses. Groundwater samples were collected from UGB (n = 44) and LGB (n = 26) and analysed for physicochemical parameters. Groundwater in this basin is desirable (51%) to permissible (TDS < 1000 mg/l, 96%) classes for drinking. Chemical constituents in the groundwater are lower than the maximum allowable limit recommended by the WHO for drinking except K. Drinking water quality index (DWQI) values reveal that groundwater belongs to excellent (89%) and good (10%) classes. However, the high concentrations of Fe and Mn in 61 and 77% of samples, respectively, restrict the usage for drinking according to USEPA recommendations. A study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of groundwater in the drought-prone Shanmuganadhi River basin of south India for best agricultural practices since the surface water that exists in this basin is not sufficient to meet out the demand. As the quality of groundwater is not uniform in the hard rock aquifers of this basin, the work was carried out to demarcate the suitable groundwater quality zones for the agricultural activities. Sixty-one groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for various parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, TDS, major cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , and K + ) and anions (Cl - , SO 4 2- , HCO 3 - , PO 4 ). To demarcate the feasible zones for agricultural practices, irrigation water quality parameters like EC, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), percent sodium (Na %), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard ratio (MHR), Kelly's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI) were computed. Furthermore, the irrigation water quality representation diagrams like USSL, Wilcox, and Doneen were prepared, and their outputs were spatially plotted using the Geographical Information System (GIS) to identify the suitability domains of groundwater for irrigational practices. Interpretation of irrigation water quality parameters and diagrams indicate that 2% of groundwater samples represented "low" salinity, 26% of samples represented "medium" salinity, 66% of samples represented "high" salinity, and 6% of samples represented "very high" salinity. Similarly, about 59% of samples represented the low alkaline/sodium category and 41% of them represented the medium alkaline category. The USSL output shows that about 2% of samples of the basin signified "low salinity with low alkalinity" category (C1S1), 28% of samples signified the "medium salinity with low alkalinity" category (C2S1), 33% of samples signified "high salinity with low alkalinity" category (C3S1), 28% of samples signified the "high salinity with medium alkalinity" category (C3S2), and 10% of samples signified the "very high salinity with medium alkalinity" category (C4S2). Groundwater is suitable for irrigation in 277.52 km 3- , NO 3 - . This study recommends that groundwater with moderate suitability could only be used for irrigating permeable soils and for cultivating salt-tolerant crops. The addition of gypsum to soil might be helpful to increase the infiltration capacity and osmotic activity. However, poorly suitable area should be avoided for agricultural practices.- ). Fluoride contamination in groundwater is a major problem throughout the world as well as in India. High-fluoride content was reported in the hot springs of Atri and Tarbalo sites in Odisha, India, and residents of nearby villages showed the manifestations of fluorosis. Around 39% of the groundwater samples showed fluoride concentration > 1 mg/l, higher than the desirable limit specified by the WHO. The dominant chemical facies of groundwaters were ions of Ca-Mg-HCO 3 and Ca-Na-Cl, which infers the lithological control over the hydrochemistry of this area. A strong correlation between fluoride and other major ions could not be found, suggesting that multiple processes are responsible for the enriched fluoride concentration observed in the study area. The major geochemical processes include dissolution of fluoride-bearing minerals from the rocks, evapotranspiration, agricultural input and mixing of cold groundwater with hot spring water containing high fluoride. The maximum fluoride exposure doses through drinking water from fluoride-contaminated tube wells were estimated to be 0.07 mg/kg/d for infants, 0.125 mg/kg/d for children and 0.06 mg/kg/d for adults, which are higher than the minimum risk level (0.05 mg/kg/d). Exposure doses of fluoride indicate that exposure risk is doubled for children in comparison to infants and adults, which might cause severe dental fluorosis and other ailments. Considering the environmental and hydrological set up of the study area, membrane defluoridation process can be suggested as the best remediation method. Nalgonda technique, dilution of fluoride-rich groundwater and better nutrition containing calcium and vitamin C are other possible options that can be included for early mitigation of fluoride contamination.

In this investigation, the geochemical progression of a total of 31 groundwater samples of pre-monsoon season was assessed with categorization based on entropy weight water quality index and risk assessment on public health in the semi-arid area of Godavari basin, Maharashtra, Central India. Graphically, the major groundwater types identified were Ca-HCO 3 , mixed Ca-Mg-Cl, and mixed Ca-Na-HCO 3 . Based on [Mg 2+ /Na + ] with [Ca 2+ /Na + ] and [HCO 3 - /Na + ] with [Ca 2+ ] plots, carbonate and silicate weathering were identified as a major geochemical process governing groundwater chemistry. Based on the irrigation water quality index, 90.3% of samples were found excellent for irrigation and 6.4% of good quality for irrigation. Groundwater and saline water interaction is the most common processes in the coastal aquifers that alters the quality of aquifer waters. The quaternary alluvium aquifer system is a significant water resource of southeast coastal Tamil Nadu that provides water supplies for industrial, agriculture, and domestic utilities. Hydrogeochemical investigations were attempted to analyze groundwater-saline water interactions for which a total of three hundred and sixty samples representing surface water, pore water, and groundwater samples collected from three significant locations (location A, B, and C) and analyzed for major ion concentrations. Piper plot infers surface and pore water samples representing saline water type (Na-Cl) in all the three locations due to tidal variation and sand dominant surface layer. Groundwater samples represent (Ca-HCO 3 ) type at location A due to fresh groundwater discharge, mixed or subterranean estuary (Ca, Mg-Cl, HCO 3 ) at location B due to conversion of freshwater (Ca-HCO 3 ) at low tide to saline water (Na-Cl) at high tide, and saline (Na-Cl) water at location C due to proximity and influence of tides. The Cl - /HCO 3 - plot represents two water types, such as fresh groundwater (0.5) and strongly affected by seawater intrusion (6.6). Evaluation of seasonal and spatial variations in vulnerable zones for poor groundwater quality is essential for the protection of human health and to maintain the crop yields. With this objective, groundwater samples were collected seasonally (i.e., pre- and post-monsoon) from the Yellareddygudem watershed of Telangana, India. These samples were analysed for major chemical parameters (pH, TDS, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , [Formula: see text], Cl - , [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and F - ). Geographical information system (GIS) tools were used to delineate the seasonal and spatial variations for vulnerable zones related to the drinking groundwater quality index (DGQI) and irrigation groundwater quality index (IGQI). Geochemical facies and relations, Piper diagrams, and principal component analysis indicated that the weathering, dissolution, leaching, ion exchange, and evaporation were the primary processes controlling the groundwater quality seasonally. Human influences were the secondary factors. The TDS, Na + , K + , Cl - , [Formula: see text], and F - parameters were observed to be within the drinking water quality standard limits in most post-monsoon groundwater samples. However, the DGQI showed an increase in the number of samples with unsuitable quality for drinking in the post-monsoon period compared with the pre-monsoon period. The IGQI demonstrated that the number of samples with unsuitable quality for irrigation increased in the post-monsoon period compared to the pre-monsoon period. The differences in the vulnerable zones between the pre- and post-monsoon periods were due to variations in groundwater recharge, following the topography. Thus, the present study will help decision makers to plan groundwater treatment measures within vulnerable zones.

In this study, the quality of groundwater was assessed in a semi-arid region of India by using an entropy weighted water quality index (EWQI) and a pollution index of groundwater (PIG). The present study describes the water quality scenario of some freshwater springs of South Kashmir during the two-year period (2013-2015) because of rising pollution risks endangering water resources globally. The accessibility to quality drinking water has become a challenge and is receiving renewed attention. A total of 96 samples from twelve springs were collected and analyzed for major drinking water quality parameters. Piper trilinear and Durov diagram depicted dominance of Ca-Mg-HCO 3 hydrochemical facies and simple dissolution and mixing process. Water quality was falling in very good to excellent class and well within the desirable limits of WHO thereby indicating huge potential for meeting rising drinking water demand. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed the generation of three components (PC1, PC2, and PC3) with higher eigenvalues of 3 or more (3-6) explaining 40, 21, and 17% of the overall variance in water quality data sets, respectively. The components obtained from PCA indicate that the parameters responsible for variations are mainly related to discharge, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (natural), nutrients (agriculture), and cation and anions (lithology). The results suggest that the hydrochemistry of springs is jointly controlled by lithology and anthropogenic inputs.

In the current survey, different hydrogeochemical processes governing the geochemistry of aquifers, the usefulness of groundwater for regular consumption, and agricultural purposes were evaluated around the Tummalapalle area. One hundred forty-four borehole locations were chosen to characterize the major physicochemical components of the aquifer water. The analysis results of pH inferred that the groundwater is nominally acidic to basic, and pH ranged from 6.6 to 8.4. The average concentrations of TDS, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , total hardness (TH), HCO 3 - , and total alkalinity (TA) are within the allowable limits of potable water quality as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and WHO. However, the average concentrations of Na + , K + , Cl - were all below the permissible limit. All samples were analyzed with the help of Piper and Chadha charts to determine the dominant hydrogeochemical components of groundwater. The characterisation of solid waste (SW), leachate, is essential for developing an appropriate management strategy or treatment method. However, due to a range of contributing factors, such as waste type and dumping site locations, forecasting leachate quality is often challenging. This research article discusses leachate quality indicators and the temporal variations of leachate quality collected throughout various seasons and after 1-2 years of storage. In addition to that, the article also provides the data of different physicochemical parameters of SW and ground water (GW) quality collected from of Pirana solid waste dumping area (Pirana SWD), Ahmedabad, India, and surrounding areas throughout various seasons. The parameters like pH, COD, TDS, sulphates, nitrates, ammonia nitrogen, hardness, and heavy metals were all monitored to see whether there any temporal variations. When leachates were obtained 'fresh,' all parameters evaluated showed significantly higher values. As time passed, the values of the parameters (COD, ammonia nitrogen) stabilised. Heavy metals such as Hg, As, Pb, and Cr were detected in both fresh and old samples. Similarly in SW, the presence of heavy metals Hg (0.39 ppb), Pb (1.12 ppb), and Cr (16.86 ppb) were also detected. The purpose of this study is to identify suitable areas for the exploitation of groundwater for human consumption by analysing Cl/Br and other indicators of wastewater influence on groundwater quality in and around the twin megacities of Kolkata and Howrah, located on the complex deltaic system of south Bengal Basin in India. About 18%, 56.5%, 28% and 35.5% of the 287 groundwater samples comply with the Indian acceptable limits (ALs) of TDS, Cl, Fe and Mn, respectively. About 29% of the 279 samples analysed have Cl/Br < 268 where the excess Br is derived from organic degradation. About 30% samples have Cl/Br > 308 clustering mainly around a palaeo-channel indicating wastewater contamination. In addition to these, many samples have NO 3 /Cl > 0.0002 and SO 4 /Cl > 0.014, indicating that the groundwater is contaminated by wastewater from sewage and septic tank leakage. The concentrations of metals (Fe, Mn) and As are also higher than AL particularly on either side of the palaeo-channel, which may affect the human body functions. The localised recharge of wastewater also contains high SO 4 . Sulphate reduction in the aquifer sequesters the As in groundwater into the neo-formed arsenopyrite. Based on the estimated water quality index, the groundwater samples have been classified into four types-highly suitable (28.17%), moderately suitable (23.94%), doubtful (15.85%) and unsuitable (32.04%) for drinking purpose. The first two types cover about 62% of the study area. But the highly urbanised area of Kolkata and Howrah city and the industrial areas in the southern fringe of Kolkata city have the latter two types of groundwater. The over-withdrawal of groundwater may expedite the quality deterioration of 'highly and 'moderately suitable water' of the study area into 'doubtful' and 'unsuitable for drinking' categories through mixing mechanism in the aquifer., (© 2022. Evaluation of groundwater quality and related health hazards is a prerequisite for taking preventive measures. The rural region of Telangana, India, has been selected for the present study to assess the sources and origins of inferior groundwater quality and to understand the human health risk zones for adults and children due to the consumption of nitrate ([Formula: see text])- and fluoride (F - )-contaminated groundwater for drinking purposes. Groundwater samples collected from the study region were determined for various chemical parameters. Groundwater quality was dominated by Na + and [Formula: see text] ions. Piper's diagram and bivariate plots indicated the carbonate water type and silicate weathering as a main factor and man-made contamination as a secondary factor controlling groundwater chemistry; hence, the groundwater quality in the study region is low. According to the Groundwater Quality Index (GQI) classification, 48.3% and 51.7% of the total study region are excellent (GQI: < 50) and good (GQI: 50 to 100) water quality types, respectively, for drinking purposes. However, [Formula: see text] ranged from 0.04 to 585 mg/L, exceeding the drinking water quality limit of 45 mg/L in 34% of the groundwater samples due to the effects of nitrogen fertilizers. This was supported by the relationship of [Formula: see text] with TDS, Na + , and Cl - . The F - content was from 0.22 to 5.41 mg/L, which exceeds the standard drinking water quality limit of 1.5 mg/L in 25% of the groundwater samples. The relationship of F - with pH, Ca 2+ , Na + , and [Formula: see text] supports the weathering and dissolution of fluoride-rich minerals for high F - content in groundwater. They were further supported by a principal component analysis. The Health Risk Index (HRI) values ranged from 0.20 to 20.10 and 0.36 to 30.90 with a mean of 2.82 and 4.34 for adults and children, respectively. The mean intensity of HRI (> 1.0) was 1.37 times higher in children (5.70) than in adults (4.16) due to the differences in weight size and exposure time. With an acceptable limit of more than 1.0, the study divided the region into Northern Safe Health Zone (33.3% for adults and 28.1% for children) and Southern Unsafe Health Zone (66.7% for adults and 71.9% for children) based on the intensity of agricultural activity. Therefore, effective strategic measures such as safe drinking water, denitrification, defluoridation, rainwater harvesting techniques, sanitary facilities, and chemical fertilizer restrictions are recommended to improve human health and protect groundwater resources., (© 2022. Seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers is a major concern due to geogenic and anthropogenic activities leading to declining groundwater quality. The present study focuses on deciphering the sea water intruded zones and its extent in the Quaternary alluvial aquifer system in the coastal belt of Digha, West Bengal, India. In this study, 36 groundwater samples were collected during pre-monsoon (2020). Subsequently, an integrated approach of hydrogeological, hydrogeochemistry, bulk magnetic susceptibility, isotopic, multivariate statistical, and geochemical modeling is adopted. Spatial distribution maps of hydrological parameters (salinity, conductivity, TDS) and major ion concentration (Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , SO 4 2- , F - ) suggest that the northern, south-west, and eastern parts of the study area are largely affected by saltwater intrusion and are corroborated with seawater mixing index (SMI). Based on sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (Na%), and Permeability index (PI) distribution maps, the same locations are identified under critical condition for the suitability of groundwater for irrigation. The order of concentration of cations and anions in the water samples are Na - ) suggest that the northern, south-west, and eastern parts of the study area are largely affected by saltwater intrusion and are corroborated with seawater mixing index (SMI). The hydrochemical facies evolution diagram depicts 81% of water samples are in the freshening phase, and 19% are in the intrusion phase. The various bivariate plots revealed that ion exchange, reverse ion exchange, silicate weathering, seawater mixing, and anthropogenic inputs are the governing factors that control groundwater evolution. R-mode factor analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and agglomerative hierarchical cluster (AHC) also indicate the influence on groundwater from seawater mixing and/or seawater intrusion. The superlativeness of bulk magnetic susceptibility (χ) analysis of water samples in delineating seawater intruded zones is elaborated. Saturation index (SI) shows that groundwater is saturated (> 0) with calcite, dolomite, and aragonite, plausibly due to seawater ingression. Stable isotopic analysis of δ -  > Br - O (- 7.00183 to - 1.37 ‰) suggests precipitation recharge/paleo-water at some locations and evaporation enrichment of groundwater. It is recommended to increase groundwater recharge, reduce groundwater extraction at critically affected locations, and have regular monitoring and management to control seawater intrusion.- respectively. Rainfall is the major source for groundwater recharge in basins areas of central region of India. Now a day, the river basins are experiencing acute shortage of water which has resulted in lowering of groundwater level and drying up of water bodies. In order to maintain water sustainability; a composite hydrologic index was developed in the Betwa basin of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh states, India. The index was developed using principal component analysis through hydrologic, topographic as well as geographic parameters derived from the Soil and Water Assessment Tool and MODFLOW model. The geomorphological parameters were categorized, on the basis of groundwater recharge potential and weight ranged from 1 to 4. The geomorphologic parameters, that is, soil type (T), slope (S), runoff ratio (R), and evapotranspiration (ET) were integrated into a single indicator of composite hydrologic index. Soil type and ET were the major factors that directly affected the groundwater recharge. These two parameters together explained 86% of total variability in the data. Based on the analysis of the four parameters that affected groundwater recharge, composite hydrologic index (CHI) was classified into very good, good, moderate, and low grade. The CHI was statistically validated using standardization methods. The index was developed as a water management tool to measure a sustainability state relative to a groundwater recharge potential, which allows for spatial and temporal comparison. A three-dimensional variable-density finite element model was developed to quantify the impact of groundwater over use on submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). The model was applied to the Arani-Korttalaiyar river basin, north of Chennai, India. This region has an upper unconfined and lower semi-confined aquifer extending up to 30 km inland from the coast and beyond this distance; the two aquifers merge and become a single unconfined aquifer. The model simulated that during the period from 2000 to 2012, the flux of seawater to the aquifer has increased from 17,000 to 24,500 m 3 /day due to over-exploitation of groundwater from the semi-confined aquifer. Where as in the unconfined aquifer, SGD has been taking place. Scenarios showing the impact of newly constructed  managed aquifer recharge structures, 10% additional increase in rainfall recharge, and termination of pumping from five well-fields on the groundwater conditions in the area were studied. The model predicted a SGD of 85,243 m 3 /day from the unconfined aquifer and 22,414 m 3 /day from the semi-confined aquifer by the end of 2030. By adopting managed aquifer recharge methods, seawater intrusion (rate of 4,408 m 3 /day) can be reduced and SGD (rate of 22,414 m 3 /day) increased. The rate of SGD increase and the movement of seawater to aquifer can be completely prevented in the semi-confined aquifer by adopting these management options by 2030. Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, is anthropogenically active and geologically belongs to the Delhi super-group. A study was designed to understand the geochemical processes controlling the elemental mobility in the groundwater. Sampling sites were divided into three zones, i.e. copper, quartzite and granite mine zones depending on the type of mineral excavated. A total of 32 representative groundwater samples were collected and analysed for heavy metals and radionuclide (U) using ICP-MS. A maximum U concentration (average 87 µgL -1 ) is observed in the quartzite mine zone, and minimum (average 13 µgL -1 ) is found in the copper mine zone samples. A high concentration of U (maximum of 430 µgL -1 ) in groundwater is attributed to mineral dissolution due to geogenic and anthropogenic activities. Despite the presence of Jaspura and Gothra granitoid in the copper mine zone, the abundance of U is low suggesting the scavenging of U by sulphides or iron oxides. Additionally, at the confluence of two geological groups, Fe concentration is found high with a low concentration of U which further confirms scavenging of U. It is evident from the results that in the absence of iron-bearing sulphides, U concentration in groundwater would be very high compared to the current concentration. It also indicates low concentration of U in the copper mine zone is due to dissolution of Fe sulphide-rich waste. The study was conducted to explore the influence of geomorphic features scattered throughout the area on the occurrence and distribution of arsenic in shallow groundwater. GIS techniques were frequently used to identify the geomorphic features and to correlate with arsenic distribution patterns. The study shows that the occurrence of geomorphic features and their distribution have a vital role in the heterogeneous distribution pattern of arsenic in shallow groundwater. The frequency distribution of geomorphic features is found similar to the arsenic distribution pattern. The moderate to highly contaminated zones are mostly consolidated to the central and southeastern part of the study area. Arsenic contamination levels are varying in different fluvial plains of the study area following the trend of Older Deltaic Plain (ODP) > Older Flood Plain (OFP) > Active Flood Plain (AFP). It has also been observed that arsenic contamination along the different geomorphic features follows the trend of abandoned channels > back swamps > other water bodies > swamps > cut-off meanders > meander scars > ponds > oxbow lakes > channel bar > point bars >channel islands. The present study provides surface water types and water quality indices (WQI) for 70 large coastal rivers of the Western Ghats (WG). Irrespective of seasons and lithology, concentration of cations (Ca 2+ > Na + > Mg 2+ > K + ) and anions (HCO 3 - > Cl - >SO 4 2- > NO 3 - > PO 4 3- ) follow a typical trend all along the coast. The WG rivers can broadly be classified as calcium-bicarbonate-chloride (Ca 2+ -HCO 3 - -Cl - ) type. Pearson correlation analysis of major ions demonstrates natural sources influence on the riverine water composition across the WG region. Gibbs plot suggests water composition of these rivers is the result of the interaction of rock and precipitation. It means that ionic contributions from precipitation and chemical weathering of rock-forming minerals largely determine surface water quality. This biodiversity hotspot is facing high population pressure and anthropogenic activities. Despite it, quantitatively, all the physical parameters and chemical constituents are within the permissible limits of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), thus making it suitable for drinking and domestic purposes. About 86% of the surface water samples are found to be suitable for irrigation (KR < 1) in non-monsoon seasons. Rivers near to Goa coast are only found unsuitable (KR > 1) for irrigation exclusively during non-monsoon seasons. From the majority of the calculated indices, it may be inferred that the river waters draining from the WG region are suitable for irrigation. Overall, the calculated WQI for studied rivers showed excellent to good water quality for drinking, agriculture, and aquatic life in monsoon seasons, which are then ranked from good to marginal in non-monsoon seasons., (© 2021. Sustainable management of groundwater resources requires detailed basin-wide water assessments. Semi-urbanized areas surrounding metropolitan cities in the western part of India were assessed for their suitability for domestic, irrigation, and industrial purposes. These study areas reflect rapid urban growth with residential complexes, combined with agricultural, horticultural, and industrial uses. Therefore, 68 representative groundwater samples were collected during the pre-monsoon (PRM) and post-monsoon (POM) seasons of 2015 and analyzed for major ions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking standards, parameters like EC, TDS, TH, HCO 3 , Ca, and Mg were found to exceed the desirable maximum limits, and the B and F content exceeded the permissible limits. The drinking suitability was studied using the modified water quality index (MWQI). The irrigation suitability was assessed using indices such as sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), percent sodium (%Na), and permeability index (PI). The industrial suitability was evaluated based on Langelier saturation index (LSI), saturation index (SI), Ryznar stability index (RSI), etc. MWQI results corroborate that 52.94 and 70% samples fall in no pollution category, and 47% and 30% samples were identified to be in the moderate category of pollution in the PRM season and POM season, respectively. The spatial variation maps of LSI, SI, RSI, Puckorius scaling index (PSI) and Larson-Skold index (LaI) show that the majority of the samples in the PRM season have low to insignificant scaling and corrosive potentials as compared to POM samples. The study results provide reliable information for water reserve managers to prepare the sustainable and more accurate basin management plans.

An increased nitrate (NO 3 ) concentration in groundwater has been a rising issue on a global scale in recent years. Different consumption mechanisms clearly illustrate the adverse effects on human health. The goal of this present study is to assess the natural and anthropogenic NO - concentrations in groundwater in a semi arid area of Rajasthan and its related risks to human health in the different groups of ages such as children, males, and females. We have found that most of the samples (n = 90) were influenced by anthropogenic activities. The background level of NO 3 - ) values of groundwater nitrate were an average of 0.895 for males, 1.058 for females, and 1.214 for children. The nitrate health risk assessment shows that about 38%, 46%, and 49% of the samples constitute the non-carcinogenic health risk to males, females, and children, respectively. Children were found to be more prone to health risks due to the potential exposure to groundwater nitrate.3 - had been estimated as 7.2 mg/L using a probabilistic approach. About 93% of nitrate samples exceeded the background limit, while 28% of the samples were beyond the permissible limit of 45 mg/L as per the BIS limits. The results show that the oral exposure of nitrate was very high as compare to dermal contact. With regard to the non-carcinogenic health risk, the total Hazard Index (HI Total ) values of groundwater nitrate were an average of 0.895 for males, 1.058 for females, and 1.214 for children. The nitrate health risk assessment shows that about 38%, 46%, and 49% of the samples constitute the non-carcinogenic health risk to males, females, and children, respectively. Children were found to be more prone to health risks due to the potential exposure to groundwater nitrate.

This study used geochemical modeling to understand the chemical evolution of groundwater, entropy water quality index to assess the aptness of groundwater for human consumption, and total hazard index to determine the possible non-carcinogenic risks among children, women, and men in an urban-industrial area (Tiruppur region) of southern India. For the above purposes, 40 groundwater samples were collected from tube and dug wells, and they were tested for various physicochemical parameters. Fluoride and nitrate levels ranged from 0.10 to 2.70 mg/l and 10 to 290 mg/l, respectively. Nearly, 50% of the fluoride samples and 58% of the nitrate samples exceeded the WHO limits of 1.5 and 45 mg/l, respectively. The majority of the groundwater samples (22.5%) represented Ca 2+ -Na + -Cl - water type while the remaining samples exhibited mixed water types. Approximately, 85% of the samples indicated high levels of salinization since they had Revelle index > 0.5 meq/l. The saturation index (SI) revealed that mineral weathering; dissolution of halite, gypsum, and anhydrite; and precipitation of calcite and dolomite contributed to groundwater chemistry. Based on the entropy water quality index (EWQI), none of the groundwater samples was characterized as excellent or good water quality while 57.5% of the samples had medium water quality, and 32.5% and 10% of the samples exhibited poor and extremely poor water qualities, respectively. The last two categories are designated as unfit for consumption. The cumulative health risk (nitrate and fluoride together) ranged from 0.97 to 11.16 for children, 0.60 to 10.54 for women, and 0.39 to 6.92 for men. These values represent health risks among 88%, 80%, and 73% of the groundwater samples for children, women, and men, respectively. Therefore, proper measures should to be done to reduce the health risks associated with high nitrate and fluoride in the groundwater of the study area, which is used for drinking purposes.

The artificial recharge is an alternative technique to augment surface water and groundwater and for providing continuous supply of water to the demand regions. The scope of contemporary study helps in evaluation of groundwater potential zones and to find proper zones and sites for groundwater recharge using geospatial and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques. In this study, the pragmatic methodology was proposed for the implementation of water harvesting structures. The satellite and conventional datasets with field inferences were systematically processed to obtain various thematic information of the study area. The analytical hierarchical process (AHP) in geographical information system (GIS) was utilized to assign the geometric mean and the normalized weight for the individual features. Further, groundwater potential zones were identified, and they were categorized into four types viz. very high (523.58 km 2 ), high (798.22 km 2 ), moderate (646.04 km 2 ) and low (456.66 km 2 ). Nearly, 54.52% of the study area falls in the 'very high' to 'high' potential categories. The GIS-based Boolean logical method was also executed to identify suitable areas for creating recharge structures such as check dams (127.47 km 2 ), percolation ponds (115.23 km 2 ), flood and furrows (63.01 km 2 ) and ditch and furrows (1046.31 km 2 ). Based on the above results, 36 water harvesting structures were promoted to augment the groundwater resources of the basin. The highest priority was given to check dams (19 Nos), followed by percolation ponds (7 Nos), flood and furrows (5 Nos) and ditch and furrows (5 Nos). The suggested structures would improve the groundwater availability for agriculture and domestic purposes in the study area. Further, the outcomes could deliver a scientific procedure to the decision makers and water scientists for effective water resources development and management planning. Overall, the integrated remote sensing, GIS and MCDA methods are an efficient and useful tool for planning and improving groundwater recharge in the basin scale.
