Introduction: Critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) is a term that refers to ductus-dependent structural anomalies of the heart that may be fatal or require invasive management in the first month of life., Objective: To know the prevalence and distribution of CCHD among newborns in Argentina, compared to other countries, and the proportion of prenatal detection and perinatal mortality., Material and Methods: Data provided by the National Network of Congenital Anomalies (Red Nacional de Anomalías Congénitas de Argentina, RENAC) for the 2009-2018 period and by other surveillance systems in the United States, Europe, and Colombia were used. For Argentina, the proportion of prenatal detection, perinatal mortality, and CCHD prevalence in newborns by jurisdiction and health system subsector were analyzed., Results: The prevalence of CCHD was 11.46 (95% confidence interval: 11.02-11.92) every 10 000 births. Prenatal detection was possible in 43.93% of cases, and perinatal mortality was 25%. Tetralogy of Fallot was the most frequent specific defect. The prevalence of CCHD and percentage of prenatal detection was significantly lower in the public subsector, whereas perinatal mortality was higher in this subsector. The prevalence of CCHD was lower than in the United States (NBDPN) and European (EUROCAT) registries. The Bogotá Registry showed different specific prevalence values., Conclusion: The prevalence of CCHD is lower than what has been observed in other countries, and even lower in the public sector of Argentina. The need to improve prenatal detection and implement pulse oximetry among newborns as a mandatory and universal screening is emphasized.

Este artículo analiza la cobertura mediática del avance de la pandemia de Covid-19 en Argentina y la medida de aislamiento social preventivo y obligatorio decretada por el gobierno nacional. Destaca tendencias problemáticas y buenas prácticas según un enfoque teórico-normativo, y las vincula con las características históricas del sistema de medios en el país. Utiliza una perspectiva teórico-metodológica que concibe a la comunicación como un derecho humano fundamental, esencial en una sociedad democrática y a los medios de comunicación de masas como vehículo fundamental para su ejercicio, y se apoya en las recomendaciones formuladas por organismos internacionales, organizaciones de la sociedad civil e instituciones nacionales. Introduction: The World Health Organization recommends prioritizing safe and effective drugs proven by clinical or epidemiological studies. However, in population groups with little research, a drug can be used for an indication or pharmaceutical form different from that approved by the regulatory agency (off-label), extrapolating data from studies in adults and exposing pediatric patients. to develop an Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) due to safety considerations that have not been systematically studied. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), a high-cost drug, is used with scant evidence in some low-prevalence pathologies. This paper describes and analyzes the off-label use of IVIg at the J. P. Garrahan Pediatric Hospital., Methods: Observational, descriptive, prospective study on off-label indications of IVIg. The sampling technique was non-probabilistic and for convenience during 7 months., Results: 305 IVIg infusions were studied, corresponding to 111 patients. The indication classification showed that 22% (n=67) of the infusions were off-label. In neurology there was a higher percentage of off-label indications (46%) and within them 45% corresponded to the use in neurological disorders. 81% of the doses indicated off-label were in the range 0.8-1g/kg. The off-label infusions presented 61.5% (n=8) of the ADRs. Those from the Neurology service represented 87.5%; 75% being from the "Neurological disorders" group., Conclusion: In some cases, IVIg was indicated in an off-label manner, finding a statistically significant relationship with the appearance of ADR. This paper examines the significant contribution of Dr. Valentín Grandis and Dr. Virgilio Ducceschi to the founding and development of experimental physiology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Córdoba (UNC), Argentina. Although the most notable contribution to the field of experimental physiology in Argentina is attributed to Bernardo Alberto Houssay, this study highlights the importance of the previous and fundamental efforts of Grandis and Ducceschi, two Italian professors whose work in Buenos Aires and Córdoba laid the foundations for research and teaching in this discipline. The paper details how, in 1904, the arrival of Valentin Grandis at the UNC marked the formal beginning of the teaching and practice of experimental physiology at the institution, followed by the incorporation of Virgilio Ducceschi, who continued and expanded Grandis' legacy. The work of these two Italian masters involved not only the installation of a state-of-the-art laboratory but also the establishment of a solid academic and scientific foundation that would influence future generations of Argentine physicians and researchers. Through a detailed analysis of their biographies, scientific contributions, and the impact of their work, this paper illustrates how Grandis and Ducceschi were key figures in the development of medical science in Argentina, particularly in the field of experimental physiology. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of their educational approach and their ability to train disciples who would continue their research, thus ensuring the permanence of their legacy at the National University of Córdoba and in Argentine science in general. In conclusion, this paper vindicates and celebrates the contributions of Valentín Grandis and Virgilio Ducceschi to the initiation of research and experimentation in physiology and biological chemistry at the UNC, highlighting their importance in the advancement of medicine and science in Argentina., (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba)

Introduction: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. This symptomatology can appear or be exacerbated with changes in routine and in the patient's usual environment. The lockdown situation during the COVID-19 pandemic has meant a drastic and unexpected change in the daily life of the general population, with a particular impact on the most physically and mentally vulnerable groups, including patients with cognitive impairment., Aim: To know the impact of lockdown measures imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic on neuropsychiatric symptomatology in people with mild cognitive impairment and dementia., Materials and Methods: Exploratory systematic review, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, of Pubmed and Psycinfo databases papers published from January 2020 to April 2021 which related confinement due to COVID-19 with the presentation or worsening of neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with mild cognitive impairment mild or dementia., Results: Worsening of neuropsychiatric symptoms was observed in patients with dementia and mild cognitive impairment, especially agitation/aggression, anxiety, depression and apathy. Neuropsychiatric symptoms were more common in patients with dementia than in those with mild cognitive impairment, although their typology varied depending on the severity of dementia., Conclusions: During lockdown a worsening in the psychobehavioral area has been observed in people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Therefore, considerations arise on the need of promoting social contact in people with mild cognitive impairment and dementia, avoiding situations of isolation and low stimulation.

Azospirillum brasilense Az39 has been used since more than 30 years by several companies in South America for biofertilizers production. This strain may promote plants growth and development, as well as the ability of inoculated plants to tolerate environmental stresses, which determines an increase in the productivity under field conditions. At present, there are no protocols in Argentina to confirm the identity of Az39 in commercial products; however, such biofertilizers are formulated almost exclusively with this strain. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to develop a molecular methodology that allows the accurate identification of A. brasilense Az39. Using the complete genome sequence and several bioinformatics tools, fragments of DNA present only in the Az39 genome were recognized. A set of PCR primers to amplify these sequences were designed, and the specific products were observed only in the strain of our interest. The sensitivity of the methodology was evaluated, where the strain could be detected up to a titer of 10 5 CFU/ml (4.5 ng/μl ADN) or 10 2 CFU/ml (0.88 ng/μl DNA) or in a minimal concentration of 0.098 ng/μl DNA, depending on the DNA extraction methodology used. Primers were tested against direct samples of commercial inoculants and cultures, in both cases there were specifics products, both in direct samples and in confirmatory tests from isolated colonies from those products. The aim of this paper is to account for the modalities in which Malvinas veterans' health was constituted as a problem requiring state intervention between 1984 and 2000. In order to do so, we have focused on the concept of problematization as a way to analyze practices and political thought. The text consists of three sections: the first one presents the methodological basis of the analysis of public policies, whereas the second and third ones intend to analyze a series of laws, bills, decrees, reports and other documents produced by different state spheres about war veterans and their health situation. The hypothesis that we propose is that the Malvinas veterans were problematized as a marginal segment of the population, although the stabilization of a specific treatment took more than fifteen years to materialize.

This paper analyze multiple experiences about the functioning of the first Open-Door in Argentina's inside, the "Asilo Colonia Regional Mixto de Alienados Oliva", created in the province of Cordoba in 1914. We approach a set of clinical histories and specialized publications of the institutional bulletin, deepening in theoretical and therapeutic processes articulated during the first decade of hospitalization of a patient who lived in Oliva most of her adult life. This study case questions the relevance given to this madhouse as a space of reclusion and social control. We show that, in a context of crisis about institutional resources and transformation into psychiatric models, the configuration of know-what and know-how of these alienists did not constitute a monolithic authority, accounting for how the behaviors of patients and their relatives, values and social uses defined types of income, diagnoses and treatment possibilities.

Taking into account the discontinuity between the body and the soul as a manifestation of the dominant "great division" of modernity, this paper intends to reflect critically on the scope of this division in the analysis of the therapeutic dimension of New Age style spirituality. Through participant observation, open-ended interviews and shared experiences with members of a spiritual movement of Indian origin, The Art of Living, carried out between 2012 and 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, we describe two processes. First, the institutional discourse of the movement and its location within public disputes regarding the tension between the therapeutic and the religious. Second, we analyze regimens of everyday relationships that produce multiple agencies and a spiritual grammar. We then suggest the importance of attending to a relational and assembled framework that challenges the more conventional dualism between the therapeutic/religious in the light of a more general contemporary process of ordinarization in the management of well-being.

Drinking water monitoring plans are important to characterize both treated and untreated water used for drinking purposes. Access to drinking water increased in recent years as a response to the Millennium Development Goals set for 2015. The new Sustainable Development Goals aim to ensure universal access to safe drinking water by 2030. Within the framework of these global goals, it is crucial to monitor local drinking water systems. In this paper, treated and untreated water from different sources currently consumed in a specific town in Salta, northern Argentina, was thoroughly assessed. Monitoring extended along several seasons and included the physical, chemical and microbiological variables recommended by the Argentine Food Code. On the one hand, treated water mostly complies with these standards, with some non-compliances detected during the rainy season. Untreated water, on the other hand, never meets microbiological standards and is unfit for human consumption. Monitoring seems essential to detect anomalies and help guarantee a constant provision of safe drinking water. This paper presents the results of an ethnographic study of an obstetric center within a hospital of Greater Buenos Aires and an analysis of the spatio-temporal dimension of hospital care. The fieldwork, carried out between 2007 and 2011, followed the everyday dynamics of the hospital and included observation in the obstetrics unit (waiting areas, the obstetric center where births and emergencies receive care, and the ambulatory care, ultrasound, and hospitalization rooms, among others) as well as spaces such as the appointments and statistics offices, the office of social services, the central hall, the pharmacy, and hallway waiting areas. Interviews were carried out with department heads, obstetricians, nurses, social workers, staff of the laboratory and the appointment and statistics offices, volunteers and patients. In this way, the article analyzes the medical-bureaucratic routines in the admission and hospitalization of women in the obstetrics center; the disputes, transactions and negotiations occurring among professionals, patients and families; the delimitation of spaces; and the temporal sequences and hierarchies involved in the passage from the "outside" to the "inside" of the hospital.

The collection of fungal pathogens and symbionts of insects and other arthropods of the Centro de Estudios Parasitológicos y de Vectores, La Plata, Argentina, is unique because it preserves in vivo and in vitro cultures of fungal pathogens. This culture collection is open for research, teaching, consulting services, and strain deposit. It contains 421 strains belonging to 23 genera (16 Ascomycota, 4 Entomophthoromycotina, 2 Glomeromycota and 1 Oomycota), and the cultures are preserved by different methods such as cryopreservation in freezer at -20°C and -70°C, paper, distilled water and lyophilization. Fungi were isolated from insects, other arthropods, and soil (by using insect baits and selective media). Species were identified by morphological features and in a few strains by molecular taxonomy (PCR of rDNA). This collection is a reference center for species identification/certifications, research and teaching purposes, strain deposit, transference and consultancy services, and its overall goal is to preserve the fungal germplasm and ex situ diversity. Most of the strains are native of Argentina. Recommendations for Hepatitis C screening based on risk factorsfor transmission proved to be ineffcient. Accordingly, the CDC recommended to screen all American individuals born between 1945-1965, based on data from population prevalence of infection. The effectiveness of implementing these recommendations in other contexts and/or populations can be estimated, in principle, knowing the age distribution of infected individuals. There is no data on population prevalence in our country. Yet we can know the age distribution of cases of Hepatitis C who accessed the health system. The aim of this paper is to analyze the distribution by birth cohort ofcases registered as "Hepatitis C" in the Sentinel Units for Viral Hepatitis in the 2007-2014 period. This will contribute to the identification, if any, ofa cohort in which case the recommendation of screening could be addressed, based on risk factors inherent to our country and our epidemiological reality. The age distribution of our cases was wider and younger than those of the population supporting the recommendation of the CDC and this suggests -beyond the difference in the populations being compared- is due to a range of risk factors and age at different infection between USA and Argentina. Thus, based on these results, the recommendation of the Argentine Consensus for Hepatitis C in 2013 to screen all individuals once in life is supported.

This paper analyzes problems experienced by policy-holders of voluntary private health insurance plans in Argentina when insurance companies fail to comply with the Consumer Protection Code. The sample consisted of consumer complaints filed with the Consumer Protection Bureau and rulings by the Bureau from 2000 to 2008. One striking issue was recurrent non-compliance with services included in the Mandatory Medical Program and the companies' attempts to blame policy-holders. According to the study, the lack of an information system hinders scientific studies to adequately address the problem. Thus, a comparison with studies on health insurance in other Latin American countries highlighted the importance of such research, the relationship to health systems, constraints on use and denial of citizens' rights to healthcare, and the increasing judicialization of healthcare provision.

The Atlantic Forest represents one of the global priority eco-regions for biodiversity conservation. In Argentina, this is represented by the Paranense Forest, which occupies much of the Misiones Province. In this paper, an updated list of land mollusks from Misiones Province is presented, and its species richness was evaluated comparing protected and unprotected areas. For this, we reviewed La Plata Museum Mollusk Collection, updated the literature review, and developed some field work between 2009 and 2010. For the areographic work, a grid (50 x 50 km) was applied to a Misiones province map. In this region, large areas of native vegetation constituting the Paranaense Forest still persist, and include protected areas such as the Iguazú National Park and Puerto Peninsula Provincial Park. These areas have been the most explored at the malacological level (both terrestrial and aquatic environments), a fact that is consistent with the greater number of records found, which may also be the explanation for the highest number of species recorded in the region. A database containing 497 records was compiled. The number of species occurring in this Province was increased from 28 to 56; 11 of which were exotic species. A total of 38 of the species occurred in protected areas and 53 in unprotected areas; and 25 species were micro-mollusks. Orthalicidae was the family with the highest species number (10) and the widest distribution, occupying 16/20 sampling units. Megalobulimus was the genus found in a greater number of sampling units (14/20). The highest values of specific richness of land gastropods were found in Northern Misiones (R=32). This richness was similar to that previously reported for the Tucumán Province, although species occurring in both provinces were mostly different. The richness in Misiones Province border areas, as the Republic of Paraguay and the state of Santa Catarina (Brazil), was about twice that found in the province. The present study showed the existence of poorly explored areas at malacological level, especially in Central and Eastern Misiones. Data presented here will allow focus future sampling efforts on such areas, so patterns of species distribution can be better defined.

This paper aims at developing a political and historical reconstruction of the period spanning from the late nineteenth century to the present. In particular, this work investigates the relationship between the Argentine State and workers' unions and the impacts of that relationship in the establishment, consolidation and potential decline of the health coverage system administrated by unions, in Argentina called obras sociales. This work will also support the hypothesis that the financing obtained by union leaders through this health coverage system has been an efficient instrument for sustaining a centralized union model and has in some cases guaranteed the continued governance of both union leaders and different national governments.

In this paper we analyze the degree of equity in access to the public health care system in the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Through a quantitative retrospective study, we analyze the inequalities in the distribution of the total public health expenditure per capita. This variable is used as a proxy for the ability of the inhabitants of each jurisdiction to access health care services. The results indicate the existence of large disparities in the levels of expenditure devoted to the population without health coverage. Moreover, the existence of greater health care needs (estimated using infant mortality rates and percentage of homes with basic needs unmet) does not translate into higher levels of public expenditure. Finally, we detect a positive association between the relative wealth of municipalities (measured by the gross geographic product per capita) and the public health expenditure per capita.

This paper develops the methodological principles of pooled analysis design, using it to study situations of vulnerability among drug users at a regional level. Data from thirteen cross-sectional studies carried out in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay between 1998 and 2004 were integrated. A critical review of the concept of data matrix which identifies four structural components, allowed us to: define the units of analysis spanning the different original populations; identify a core of common variables (social and demographic characteristics, drug use, sexual practices, serology of blood-borne and sexually transmitted diseases) with their respective values; examine the indicators, dimensions and procedures used to measure the variables; and establish their compatibility with a thematic and comparative analysis of data collection tools. The main result was a new data matrix with 3,534 cases. Multidisciplinary collaboration between teams and institutions from the three countries made it possible to maximize the available sources in order to analyze characteristics of the local contexts and of the overall regional.

This paper analyzes the discourses of Argentine doctor and public health professional Leopoldo Bard using three texts on drug abuse published between 1923 and 1933. These texts embody the debates of the time regarding the role of the State, public policies at the national and regional level and, particularly, the US influence in Argentina exerted through the figure of Dr. Bard. The legislative measures and policies of that time, undoubtedly of a repressive character, were key in the State's advances into the private sphere and in the increasing importance of professional organizations in the definition of the material and symbolic borders of the socially acceptable, including those related to drug use. The multiple purposes these policies seem to satisfy are also highlighted: at the local level they enable other forms of repressing conflicts arising from immigration, while at the international level they appease US requirements.

Objective: To evaluate by biochemical parameters iron and zinc nutritional status in women with and without pica diagnosis during pregnancy., Methodology: During puerperium 109 women were evaluated at Fiorito Hospital, Argentina. Pica diagnosis was made in 42 women while 67 did not refer the practice. Fasting blood samples were obtained and analyzed in a hematology analyzer for values of red blood cells, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit. Serum zinc and erythrocyte zinc was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry., Results: Substances consumed during pica practice were: earth, ice, brick, paper, desinfectant and dog food. Women with pica diagnosis had higher a rate of family history of pica and personal antecedents of pica in childhood (OR: 15.9). Sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics and neonatal birth weight were similar between both groups, although women with pica diagnosis had lower values in mean corpuscular volume (p = 0,008), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (p = 0,009) and erythrocyte zinc (0,008). Applying a logistic regression model, erythrocyte zinc was the only biochemical indicator associated with pica practice (p = 0,028)., Conclusions: At puerperium, women with pica during pregnancy could have lower levels in biochemical parameters for iron and zinc status so we suggest that early diagnosis of pica could help to identify micronutrient deficient.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze changes produced in the public health system of Córdoba during the peronist government and the performance of the provincial state in the process. We study the increase of health services, public social spending, health agencies and bureaucracies of the state of Córdoba between 1943 and 1955.

The institutionalization of clinical research in Argentina reached its point of greatest maturity with the creation, in 1957, of the Institute of Medical Investigations (Instituto de Investigaciones Médicas) of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and the drive of the man who was its director for almost 20 years, Alfredo Lanari. In this paper I analyze the ways in which he generated a style of clinical research and a referential position in local medical field that allowed him to carry out said institutional realization. This achievement was the result of a personal enterprise and at the same time part of a larger context of transformations within the medical discipline world-wide and at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. This study was carried out combining oral and documentary sources, such as interviews with physicians at the Institute of Medical Investigations, members of the journal Medicina and of the Argentine Society of Clinical Investigation (Sociedad Argentina de Investigación Clínica), as well as academic files and scientific articles.

Southern Cone Sub-Regional Project on Cystic Echinococcosis Control and Surveillance: Argentina, Brasil, Chile and Uruguay, is a joint and collaborative tool with the aim of promoting the implementation or the strengthening of programs for disease control. The paper describes the background, the institutional aspects that regulates the structure and functions, as well as the guidelines defined in the technical and operational project. The article emphasize the achievements through Projects of Technical Cooperation among Countries, and the development of integrated and innovative approaches for prevention and control of the disease and training of human resources of the control programs. Some of the challenges are: to achieve the sustainability of the project, implementation of technical groups for analysis and assessment at request of the countries, improvement of the regional information systems, to continue training human resources of the control programs and to expand and strengthen the technical cooperation among countries.

The present paper focuses on the reconstruction of the historical circumstances of knowledge production as well as and the debates about endemic goiter disease during the period 1916-1955 in Argentina. Taking into account the social, political and material dimensions, this text explores the re-signification of scientific and medical knowledge oriented to the prevention and health treatment, through the positioning of several social actors engaged all along the period, and the diverse historical and institutional contexts.

Chagas disease is one of the main endemic illnesses in Latin America. Since 1969 up to the present, the treatment of chronic Chagas patients has been the object of a scientific-medical controversy mobilizing several bodies of knowledge and actors. The resolution of the controversy has direct effects on the health of patients; however, they have been systematically excluded of public debates. In this paper we identified and specified four different steps of the controversy, showing the different positions adopted by the actors implicated, analyzing their statements, the scientific knowledge mobilized during the debates and the consequences for the establishment of norms for the treatment. We conclude showing that what makes up the central issue of the controversy is not what the actors implicated explicitly state as it but the criteria (technical and cognitive) through which are measured and defined "illness" and "cure" states. This research is about a case study in Argentina.

This paper discusses the professionalization of nurses in Argentina during Peron's administration (1946-1955). We will focus on two nursing schools during such period: Escuela de Engermas de la Secretaría de Salud Pública (1947) and Escuela de Enfermeras "7 de mayo" member of Fundación Eva Perón (1950). We will analyze the institutional disputes over budgetary positions in the context of greater government intervention in public health issues.

Objective: This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a Public Health program for the elderly based on health promotion and pathologies prevention, in order to avoid complications associated with illnesses and improves the quality of life (QOL) in elderly adults (EA)., Methods: A 12 month intervention studies used 700 EA randomized in 2 groups: intervention and control. Each group was submitted to pre-post intervention measurements that included weight, height, blood pressure (BP), cholesterol, lipids, glycaemia, cardiovascular (infarct, stroke) and bone fractures events, hospitalization, and a QOL survey. Intervention consisted of periodic physical activity to fortify muscular groups, as well as recreational activities, nutritional and food manipulation training visits. A medical student was assigned to each participant from the intervention group to assure periodical contact and to share activities. The control group continued with their normal activities during observational period., Results: The intervention group showed a significant reduction in the BP, lipids and cholesterol values compared to control group. Reduction on cardiovascular events (-31%), hip fractures (-18.2%) and number of hospital admittance (-21.1%) were obtained for group A in relation to B. The QOL survey showed 28.7% improvement for group A compared with 33.4% improvement compared with control group., Conclusion: The health program with exhaustive follow-up administration, significantly reduced risk factors and complications associated with aging.

We present a learning experience conducted in the Chair of Dermatology Clinic of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, National University of Cordoba in the context of curriculum change. For comprehension,present a theoretical framework and practical from the conceptualization of the "portfolio" teaching and its role teaching and learning paradigms sustained constructivist medical education. The portfolio Teach-ing is not a collection of papers, but a coherent set of experiences led thoughtful learning between teachers and students. During the first half of the twentieth century, the presence of leprosy in modern societies provoked various reactions. As ancient prejudices had not disappeared yet, the medical-legal discourse dealt with a problem that exceeded the strictly sanitary framework. From a scientific perspective, this paper analyzes the way in which answers find that seemed the population and the future of the race in the physical and symbolic isolation of the leper, were developed in Argentina. In that context, the eugenics legitimated strong restrictions of rights to sick persons on whom this ancestral stigma continued to carry much weight.

Tuberculosis was a stigmatized disease, with a strong social meaning developed by medicine itself. In this paper, we make an analysis of the medical conceptions about the disease, and their repercussions on patients in a special place such as tuberculosis sanatoriums. In the first place, we enumerate the sanatoriums in the province of Cordoba, after that, we study the medical views about the sanatoriums and the infection, as a central element for hospitalized patients with tuberculosis. Later, we analyze the myths generated around the disease, and finally, we try to understand how these myths made possible to create a particular social group within those sanatoriums.

A report and an updated list with comments on the species of freshwater molluscs of Argentina which covers an area of 2 777 815 km2 is presented. Distributions of Gastropoda and Bivalvia families, endemic, exotic, invasive as well as entities of sanitary importance are also studied and recommendations on their conservation are provided. Molluscs related to the Del Plata Basin have been thoroughly studied in comparison to others areas of the country. This fauna exhibits relatively the biggest specific richness and keeps its affinity with the fauna of other regions of the basin in areas of Paraguay and Brasil. The 4 500 records of molluscs considered in this paper arise from the study of the collections of Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia", Buenos Aires; Museo de La Plata, La Plata and Fundación "Miguel Lillo", Tucumán. These institutions keep very important collections of molluscs in southern South America. Field information has recently been obtained and localities cited by other authors are also included in the data base. Until today, 166 species have been described, 101 belonging to 10 families of Gastropoda and 65 to 7 of Bivalvia. Families with highest specific richness are Lithoglyphidae (22) and Sphaeriidae (25), respectively. The number of endemic species (those present only in Argentina) by family is: Gastropoda: Ampullariidae (1), Cochliopidae (10), Lithoglyphidae (11), Thiariidae (3), Chilinidae (11), Lymnaeidae (2) and Physidae (2?); Bivalvia: Hyriidae (1?); Etheriidae (1?) and Sphaeriidae (10). Families with a distribution that comprise almost the whole country are: the Sphaeriidae and the gastropods Cochliopidae, Chilinidae and Lymnaeidae. Families Erodonidae and Solecurtidae (Bivalvia) were registered in mixohaline environments from Buenos Aires province. Gastropod families Thiaridae and Glacidorbiidae show a very restricted distribution. The rest of the families are present mainly in the center and north of the country. Species of sanitary interest are the propagators of: schistosomiasis -Biomphalaria peregrina, B. straminea y B. tenagophila, Planorbidae-, fasciolasis -Lymnaea viatrix and L. columnella, Lymnaeidae- and dermatitis -Chilina gibbosa and C. fluminea, Chilinidae. Invasive species are: Corbicula fluminea (Corbiculidae) and Limnoperna fortunei (Mytilidae). The construction of new areas for the protection and conservation of the high risk endemic species of freshwater molluscs is a priority. It is necessary to give special attention to the species of the patagonic mountain range and of the mesopotamic area of the Del Plata Basin.

A four year study was conducted on a natural population of immature stages of Aedes aegypti after the re-invasion of Argentina by this vector in 1987. Thirty six plastic containers with 700 ml of dechlorinated water were placed in the La Plata Zoological Garden, La Plata, Argentina. A strip of filter paper around each container was added to facilitate egg counting. Eggs, larvae and pupae were counted weekly in each container from September, 1996 to August, 2000. After egg counting, papers were submerged to facilitate egg hatching and a new paper was placed in each container. Presence of A. aegypti immature stages was recorded from December-January to June during each of the four years of this study. In 1997, 13,105 eggs, 7,978 larvae and 1,476 pupae were registered with 54.7 % positive containers; during 1998, 8,194 eggs, 668 larvae and 142 pupae were recorded with 28.3 % positive containers; 13,510 eggs, 3,690 larvae and 743 pupae were registered during 1999 with 56.7 % positive containers; and 16,327 eggs, 4,669 larvae and 715 pupae during 2000 with 59.3 % of containers with presence of A. aegypti. Egg number and hatching rate were drastically reduced in 1998 when temperatures from December to May were 1 to 2.5 degrees C lower than the other years of this study. These colder than usual temperatures in the summer of 1998 were a consequence of the El Niño event.

The "Cuestionario de Intereses Profesionales (CIP, Vocational Interests Questionnaire)" was developed by Fogliatto et al in three different versions: a paper and pencil-based one, a computer-based one, and a revised form. The instrument was originally created for the assessment of vocational interests of adolescents assisting the last years of the secondary school in Argentina. The aim of the present study was to adapt the inventory for the adolescents coursing the initial period of the secondary school. Psychometric studies analyzing the factorial structure of the instrument and internal consistence of their scales were accomplished. Additionally, evidences of criterion validity concerning to a specialized field of the secondary school and career choice intentions were analyzed. Results bring initial validity evidence of this new version of the CIP, which its main utility is career counseling applied to late-adolescence. Further studies are required in order to validate this instrument for being utilized in counseling of adolescent facing decisions related to specialty choice of the secondary school.

The objective of this paper was to validate tools for schoolchildren to help control Chagas disease vectors in their own homes. Two types of tables were produced, one reporting on the presence of risk factors in residences and the other to record the presence of triatomines. The materials were tested in the field by 100 students from an endemic area in Argentina and validated by technical personnel. The results obtained by students concerning the percentage of households with risk factors and vector-positive residences were similar to those obtained by the technical personnel. This information allowed teachers to classify the risk levels in the residences as at "high-risk", "risk", or "no risk". The information provides an important aid for health workers, and it is therefore recommended to include this educational strategy in the surveillance phase of the Chagas disease control program.

Five fungal species were isolated and identified in food products: Ascotricha chartarum, Leptosphaerulina argentinensis, Veronaea coprophila, Scolecobasidium constrictum and Coremiella cubispora. A. chartarum was isolated from paper bag containing sugar and the other four from tomato sauce. Except for L. argentinensis, the other four were new reports and the five species were isolated for the first time in Argentina.

Unlabelled: Chagas disease is an endemic public health problem in the Province of San Luis, Argentina. The objective of this work was to evaluate the application of a screening method, focusing on the biochemical processing of capillary samples and diagnostic testing., Material and Methods: In the year 2002, samples of capillary blood were collected from 250 children in their homes; the samples were placed in glycerin buffer and processed by quantitative PHA and ELISA. The results were compared with venous blood samples from the same children, that were analyzed using the same assays, as well as by IFA, the standard method., Results: The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were 98.03, 92.96, 78.12, and 99.46%, respectively., Conclusions: The serological assays PHA and ELISA conducted simultaneously were sufficiently sensitive and specific, thus validating the screening method. By analyzing the influence of early Pasteurian thought on health discourse and practice, this paper discusses the thesis postulating an opposition between pre- and post- Pasteurian hygiene. Focusing on an analysis of the sanitary strategies to control lower-class housing that were proposed by Argentine and Brazilian hygienists, the author identifies the breaks and continuities between classical hygiene and hygiene reorganized by microbiology.

This paper deals with corruption and the lack of transparency in public sector purchases as well as with the main instruments to obtain adequate results in purchase negotiation.Firstly, we discuss how corruption causes concern to national governments, international organizations, academic centers, non-governmental organizations and society in general. The consequences of corruption in Argentina and other Latin American countries are highlighted, especially the effect of corruption on economic growth and the way it creates economic inefficiency and inequality.Secondly, the database created by the Subsecretary of Strategic Management of the Autonomous Government of the City of Buenos Aires is analyzed. The central purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the Administrative Reform of 1998 on the prices of 24 products acquired by 13 general acute care hospitals from 1998-1999. The weighted prices, the number of units purchased and the total number of contracts given in this period, as well as the products with the greatest utilization rate, are analyzed. Multivariante analysis was used to identify hospitals with appropriate activity and efficient budget administration (activity and negotiation indicators). Price development was analyzed using the regression technique (ordinary least squares), which demonstrated an 8% reduction in prices for the year 1999. The contribution of each hospital to this variation is presented using dummy variables. Thus, six of the 13 hospitals significantly contributed to the decrease in prices. Of these six, three hospitals also contributed to reduction in price dispersion. The results obtained allow us to conclude that, if public hospitals have adequate purchase negotiation instruments and a uniform legal framework, they can achieve a good level of activity. Furthermore, public hospitals can contribute to reductions in price and price dispersion, at the same time as improving efficiency in the assignation and utilization of resources.
