The paper analyzes the application of the numerical findings of the program, which is becoming increasingly difficult for civil and structural design. Since, as in many other countries, the verification of design using a software model is now required by current Italian codes as well. Given this, the structural engineer must provide a technical report using a licensed software tool, attached to other project documents to get the Seismic Authorization at the local Civil Engineering Department offices. Following a brief explanation of structural analysis methodologies, this study presents a criterion for assessing the applicability of numerical findings obtained using any structural software. Three case studies of this criterion are shown to demonstrate how to check them using simple manual calculations: (i) the normal stress in RC columns subjected to gravity loads; (ii) the periods of vibration, participating masses, and seismic base shear derived from dynamic modal analysis; and (iii) the main parameters characterizing the pushover curves of existing buildings. Finally, this work underlines the significance of confirming the application of numerical results obtained by software in civil and structural design. The offered criteria and scenarios exhibit realistic techniques to ensure accuracy and reliability in structural performance assessment, according to the structural requirements imposed by current codes in Italy and similar countries. This paper investigates the creation and use of integrated IFC models to modernise traditional processes for applications to building authorities for structural engineering approvals and permits. First, we provide a brief overview of e-permit systems in the AEC sector, with the focus on solutions that implement openBIM standards like IFC, MVD, and IDM. Second, we conduct a study on the information requirements of Italy's seismic-authorisation processes relating specifically to the field of structural engineering. Third, we describe preliminary research on defining the structural engineering information that needs to be incorporated in the IFC format for e-permitting scopes. Fourth, we present our early work on the development of an MVD that would enable the automatic extraction of integrated IFC models. Fifth, we illustrate the reference workflow of the Str.E.Pe. project and propose a preliminary proof-of-concept that makes use of an IFC model, which has been integrated with structural information to support the activities of the building authority in Avellino. The of- ficers there have developed a SWOT analysis using IFC models to assist them in assessing the compliance of structural projects with seismic requirements. In the state-of-the-art of structural engineering the actions for design or assessment of bridges should derive from a probabilistic (i.e., frequentist) characterization of the loads. Data from weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems can inform stochastic models for traffic loads. However, WIM is not widespread, and data of this kind are scarce in the literature and often not recent. Due to structural safety reasons, the 52 km long A3 highway in Italy, connecting the cities of Naples and Salerno, has been equipped with a WIM system which has been operational since the beginning of 2021. The system's measurements of each vehicle transiting over the WIM devices, impede overloads on the many bridges featured in the transportation infrastructure. By the time of this writing the WIM system has seen one year of uninterrupted operation, collecting more than thirty-six million datapoints in the meantime. This short paper presents and discusses these WIM measurements, deriving the empirical distributions of traffic loads and making the original data available for further research and applications. Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) using satellite data is revealing a promising tool for monitoring long-term deformation phenomena in critical infrastructural systems. Nevertheless, its use in structural engineering is still quite limited and a general understanding of its potential is still missing, especially when dealing with bridge structures for which specific methods of data processing and displacement assessment with error quantification need to be developed, accounting for the type of deformation phenomena and for the orientation of the bridge. In order to partly fill this research gap, this paper proposes a post-processing methodology to derive two-dimensional displacement configurations of multi-span bridges with properly defined error bounds, using both ascending and descending Synthetic Aperture Radar acquisitions. In order to obtain an engineering meaningful estimate of the uncertainties affecting the reconstructed bridge deformations, both random and systematic errors are quantified, accounting for the orientation of the bridge with respect to the Line-Of-Sights of the satellites, the hypothesized deformation plane and the accuracy of InSAR measurements. The proposed procedure has been applied to the illustrative case study of the Albiano-Magra Bridge in Italy, collapsed on 8 April 2020. The results, referred to the monitoring period 2015–2020, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in supporting engineering assessments. In particular, an initially temperature-induced stationary deformation phenomenon has been observed, with all spans moving upwards or downwards during summer and winter. Afterwards, displacements of increasing amplitude for two side spans have been observed during the three years preceding the failure, providing information on the possible cause of collapse. The diffusion of seismic structural health monitoring systems, evaluating the dynamic response of engineering structures to earthquakes, is growing significantly among strategic buildings. The increasing availability of valuable vibration data is being backed by continuously evolving techniques for analysing and assessing structural health and damage. Within this framework, the paper proposes a novel model-driven vibration-based methodology to support the assessment of the damage level in masonry buildings hit by earthquakes. The leading idea is to exploit, in the pre-event phase, synthetic equivalent-frame modelling and nonlinear dynamic analyses to systematically relate the gradual reduction of natural frequencies to increasing levels of structural damage. The resulting behavioural chart (seismic chart) of the building, constructed by employing computational tools and robustly defined on a statistical base, may provide the theoretical expectation to ascertain a certain level of seismic damage, based on the decrease in vibration frequency experimentally identified in the post-event phase. The methodology is firstly formalized, integrating common identification techniques with a novel damage grade estimation procedure, and finally exemplified for a monitored strategic masonry building damaged by the 2016–2017 Central Italy earthquake sequence. The outcomes of this application confirm the operational validity of the methodology, which can be intended as effective support for the decision-making process regarding structural usability and safety in the post-earthquake scenario. A close relationship between civil protection organizations and scientific community is widely recognized today at international and European level as being of paramount importance for the effectiveness of research products in their application for disaster risk management. In this perspective, European research projects on risks are more and more focused on application oriented outcomes, requiring the involvement of civil protection organizations, and creating a well-structured knowledge network within a European civil protection framework. For about forty years, the Italian civil protection has been relying upon the contribution of the scientific community to find the best solutions based on the most advanced and consolidated knowledge, for activities that concern the management of the entire disaster risk cycle. The interactions between civil protection and scientific community in Italy are mainly based on the so-called Competence Centers, i.e. the scientific operational partners of the Civil Protection Department (DPC), and on the Major Risks Commission, i.e. the technical-scientific advisory body of DPC. They both work with an interdisciplinary, multisectoral and, when necessary, multi-hazard risk approach. This paper aims to describe how Competence Centers presently operate, in a way that has evolved over the years. The focus will be on scientific activities and products related to the earthquake and structural engineering science, emphasizing the way of operating and collaborating of Competence Centers, consistently with the principles of the Italian Civil Protection Code. ShakeMap is the tool to evaluate the ground motion effect of earthquakes in vast areas. It is useful to delimit the zones where the shaking is expected to have been most significant, for civil defense rapid response. From the earthquake engineering point of view, it can be used to infer the seismic actions on the built environment to calibrate vulnerability models or to define the reconstruction policies based on observed damage vs shaking. In the case of long-lasting seismic sequences, it can be useful to develop ShakeMap envelopes, that is, maps of the largest ground intensity among those from the ShakeMap of (selected) events of a seismic sequence, to delimit areas where the effects of the whole sequence have been of structural engineering relevance. This study introduces ShakeMap envelopes and discusses them for the central Italy 2016–2017 seismic sequence. The specific goals of the study are: (i) to compare the envelopes and the ShakeMap of the main events of the sequence to make the case for sequence-based maps; (ii) to quantify the exceedance of design seismic actions based on the envelopes; (iii) to make envelopes available for further studies and the reconstruction planning; (iv) to gather insights on the (repeated) exceedance of design seismic actions at some sites. Results, which include considerations of uncertainty in ShakeMap, show that the sequence caused exceedance of design hazard in thousands of square kilometers. The most relevant effects of the sequence are, as expected, due to the mainshock, yet seismic actions larger than those enforced by the code for structural design are found also around the epicenters of the smaller magnitude events. At some locations, the succession of ground-shaking that has excited structures, provides insights on structural damage accumulation that has likely taken place; something that is not accounted for explicitly in modern seismic design. Industrial Architecture and their associated engineering structures have a clear objective. They need to be designed and constructed to allow for a product production independently of their nature. In the early XX century German Architecture, especially with the "Bauhaus" movement and others, such as Pier Luigi Nervi in Italy, provided a great impulse to the concept of Industrial Architecture constituting pieces of art. Today, we find examples of industrial buildings that are excellently preserved, and the management of their changing flexibility demand generate engineering judgement to accommodate new "production options" with a safe performance.
