Professor Margaret Archer is a leading critical realist and major contemporary social theorist. This edited collection seeks to celebrate the scope and accomplishments of her work, distilling her theoretical and empirical contributions into four sections which capture the essence and trajectory of her research over almost four decades. Long fascinated with the problem of structure and agency, Archer's work has constituted a decade-long engagement with this perennial issue of social thought. However, in spite of the deep interconnections that unify her body of work, it is rarely treated as a coherent whole. This is doubtless in part due to the unforgiving rigour of her arguments and prose, but also a byproduct of sociology's ongoing compartmentalisation. This edited collection seeks to address this relative neglect by collating a selection of papers, spanning Archer's career, which collectively elucidate both the development of her thought and the value that can be found in it as a systematic whole. This book illustrates the empirical origins of her social ontology in her early work on the sociology of education, as well as foregrounding the diverse range of influences that have conditioned her intellectual trajectory: the systems theory of Walter Buckley, the neo-Weberian analysis of Lockwood, the critical realist philosophy of Roy Bhaskar and, more recently, her engagement with American pragmatism and the Italian school of relational sociology. What emerges is a series of important contributions to our understanding of the relationship between structure, culture and agency. Acting to introduce and guide readers through these contributions, this book carries the potential to inform exciting and innovative sociological research.

This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the'post-industrial'societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality.

This book uses Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson's The Established and The Outsiders to map selected established-outsiders figurations in Poland after 1989. Looking at gender and sexual orientation, nationalism and patriotism, race and class, antifeminism and homophobia, elitist and populist imaginaries, religious and political ideals and ideologies, hate speech, and the crisis of the rule of law, this book tracks how inequalities are transformed into figurations of the have and the have-nots by way of spatial, symbolic and institutional exclusion. This edited collection is rooted in a socio-historical understanding of the trajectory of Polish society before and since the fall of Communism over thirty years ago, and a critical assessment of the dramatic turn that Polish society has taken since the beginning of the democratic backsliding in 2015.

Räumliche Ungleichheiten innerhalb von Staaten haben jüngst an Bedeutung gewonnen, wie die geografische Verteilung von Wahlergebnissen in vielen Ländern zeigt. Das Buch analysiert die Rolle von Indikatoren sowohl für die Messung von räumlichen Disparitäten als auch für die Steuerung kompensatorischer Interventionen des Staates. Indikatoren vermessen Raum typischerweise in einem territorialen Schema, was nicht unbedingt den durch Praktiken konstituierten Räumen entspricht. Der Band untersucht die Territorialpolitik staatlicher Akteure in den Politikfeldern Kommunalfinanzen, Bildungsinfrastruktur, Regionalförderung und Asylverwaltung primär am Beispiel Deutschlands. Er zeigt, dass Indikatoren nur in einigen dieser Politikfelder eine Schlüsselstellung erreicht haben.

This open access book constitutes a transnational and multidisciplinary inquiry of the most pressing challenges faced by young people Not in Employment, nor in Education or Training (NEET) in rural areas across Europe.. Rural NEETs are one of the most invisible segments of the youth population, in spite of the fact that the percentage of NEETs is higher in the countryside, compared to those in suburban and urban areas across the EU and many of the Southern and Eastern European countries. This book identifies and analyses different factors that may contribute to or hamper youth social development and social inclusion. Among them are main individual features of rural NEETs, the quality and characteristics of rural NEETs'informal social networks and support, the singularities of formal and non-formal education in rural areas and how they shape the transition from school to work, the role of employment services in providing adequate institutional support, the importance of policy package designor the role of new paradigms of rural development to uphold vulnerable young people in the European countryside. The contributions offered in this book provide a new model of analysis and comprehension of rural NEETs'personal development and social inclusion. This book therefore establishes the state of the art regarding available knowledge on rural NEETs, and represents an inspirational resource for new research agendas on the subject of vulnerable rural youth in Europe. The contributors to this volume take up the theme of instructed and instructive actions. Harold Garfinkel, the founder of ethnomethodology, initiated the study of instructed actions as a way to elucidate the embodied production of social order in real time. Studies of instructions and the actions of following them provide empirical content to the classical theoretical issue of how rules, norms, and other normative guidelines are conveyed, understood, and used for producing social actions and structures.The studies in this volume address novel technologies of instructed action and non-obvious ways in which ordinary actions turn out to be instructive for participants in immediate situations of action and interaction. In some cases, the studies address specialized practical, artistic, and recreational activities, and in others they address commonplace modes of action and interaction. In all cases, they focus on how the manifest organization of specific activities is organized with and without explicitly formulated instructions.This book will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in ethnomethodological approaches to research by contributing to understandings of how specific actions are instructed and instructive in the circumstances in which they are produced.

Seit 2018 gibt es das Grundlagenwerk „Praxis der Sinus-Milieus® - eine autoritative Darstellung des Milieuansatzes von SINUS und dessen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten, also eine Publikation, die die Gültigkeit der Sinus-Milieus im Kontext der soziokulturellen Dynamik begründet, ihre Aktualität in Zeiten von Digitalisierung und Globalisierung untermauert und ihren Nutzwert für Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft wie für den institutionellen Bereich deutlich macht.Diese Grundsatzveröffentlichung ist jetzt komplett überarbeitet, aktualisiert und ergänzt worden. Die vorliegende Neuauflage enthält die zwischenzeitlich upgedateten, d.h. neu konstituierten Sinus-Milieumodelle für Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz, das neue Migranten-Milieumodell und das neue internationale Meta-Milieumodell. Außerdem wurden wichtige Anwendungsbereiche der Sinus-Milieus ergänzt: ein Kapitel zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit, ein Kapitel zur Markenwahrnehmung, ein Kapitel zur politischen Transformationsberatung, ein Kapitel zur milieuspezifischen Entwicklung von Personas und anderes mehr.Das vorliegende Buch liefert Informationen über die Sinus-Milieus „direkt von der Quelle“, aus Sicht der Erfinder, Entwickler und Anwender des Ansatzes. An der Strukturierung der Stadt nach neoliberalen und auf Standortvorteile abzielende Marktmechanismen sind viele verschiedene Akteur:innen, Behörden, Institutionen und „beschwerdemächtige“ Interessengruppen beteiligt. Auf der Grundlage von Theorien zu sozialen bzw. relationalen Räumen, die der bloßen Vorstellung von Raum als feste Größe, als Container, in dem sozialen Prozesse lediglich verortet werden, den Rücken kehren, soll in den Beiträgen des Bandes nach den räumlichen Praxen, den Wissensbeständen und Diskursen über Räume und damit nach den Konstitutionen von Raum gefragt werden, die in der Stadt wirksam werden und städtische Inklusions- sowie Exklusionsmechanismen produzieren.

Das Handbuch führt in den aktuellen Diskussionsstand der sozialwissenschaftlichen Entwicklungsforschung ein und liefert einen systematischen Überblick über die Vielfalt der vertretenen Paradigmen und Forschungsfelder. In die 2. Auflage wurden drei neue Kapitel aufgenommen. Die anderen Beiträge wurden aktualisiert. Ein Sach- und Personenverzeichnis vervollständigt den Band.

Was richten öffentliche Eingriffe gegen das Geschäft mit Boden und Immobilien aus? In den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten sind die Anteile befristeter Beschäftigungsverhältnisse bei jungen Erwachsenen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in anderen spätkapitalistischen Gesellschaften deutlich angestiegen. Eingebettet in fortdauernde Trends einer Verringerung wohlfahrtsstaatlicher Sicherungsstandards hat diese Entwicklung dazu beigetragen, dass sich Übergänge in stabile berufliche Karrieren und planbare private Zukunftsgestaltungen diversifizieren und verzögern. In der vorliegenden Studie wird eine soziologische Erklärung der Auswirkungen befristeter Beschäftigung auf private und partnerschaftliche Zukunftsgestaltungen von jungen Erwachsenen theoriegeleitet ausgearbeitet und empirisch überprüft. This book applies the general theory of critical rationalism in order to develop a new sociology of the open society, in general, and a new analysis of the transition from a closed society to an open society in particular. It presents a criticism of Karl Popper's analysis of human action for opening up a closed society, followed by a critical study of the mainstream sociology to show how justificational models of knowledge and rational action have prevented sociology from addressing the contribution of human action to social change.This book provides new sociologies of closed and open societies. It argues that in the closed society'a low level'of critical rationality is activated by people to define the meaning of the good life and social institutions of law, polity and economy. This open access book critically examines discussions on digitalisation and individual opportunities for socio-economic advancement. Contrary to the prevailing narratives of “digital empowerment” and opportunities for every individual, this book argues that digitalisation massively curtails social advancement opportunities, consolidating existing social relations. From a spatial perspective, Scheffer demonstrates how socially disadvantaged groups are faced with reproducing mechanisms as part of a new data economy. Surprisingly, the more intensively digital services are used, the more this happens.Building on Löw´s sociology of space and Bourdieu´s concept of habitus, this book shows how practices of social exclusion are transferred to the digital present in an innovative way. The image of “mirrored” spaces describes a new mechanism that explains social exclusion in the age of digitalisation. Since its existence in the 1950s, consumer policy in Germany has been understood and pursued primarily as a bundle of actions and measures initiated and institutionalised by the state. In many cases, the state has also issued corresponding mandates and set up support models, which has created the impression that we are basically dealing with a'consumer policy from above'imposed by macro-politics. Not that there have not been repeated attempts in the past decades to give impetus to consumer policy from the middle of civil society - often in the form of small citizens'initiatives. And in recent years in particular, a number of new consumer organisations have emerged which operate much closer to the grass roots. Nevertheless, the impression seems to have taken root among the large, government-related'players'in the field, who have been in the'business'for decades, not to mention government-internal consumer policy, that consumer policy concerns a policy field that is essentiallyordered by a collaboration of the state on the one hand, and consumer protection organisations representing all consumers equally on the other, while the many small consumer initiatives, not even started by individual committed consumers, regularly fall behind in comparison. This perspective refers largely to the view of and from the centre of politics. This volume is intended to go some way towards countering the institutionally prevailing impression that, in principle, there is only'consumer policy from above'that is really effective and assertive.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. Das Buch stellt eine empirische Analyse der subjektiven Bedeutung von Armut und sozialer Aus-grenzung innerhalb eines gewandelten sozialstaatlichen Arrangements dar. Es zeigt auf, dass von Armut betroffene Menschen ständig damit konfrontiert sind, dass sie von ihren eigenen Idealen, Wünschen und Überzeugungen abweichen und diese nicht realisieren können. Zugleich wird gezeigt, dass die Entstehung und Etablierung von Hilfsangeboten der ‚Tafel‘ auf die Existenz von Armut innerhalb der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft verweist und ein Symbol der Transformation des Sozialstaats darstellt. Während die Nutzer•innen der ‚Tafeln‘ auf die Hilfen angewiesen sind, versetzen diese sie zugleich jedoch nicht in der Lage, die Armutssituation zu überwinden.

Die Geschlechtersegregation am Arbeitsmarkt und die sich dadurch ergebenden Unterschiede zwischen Frauen und Männer in Hinblick auf Tätigkeitsfelder, Positionen, Stundenausmaß, Einkommen, Aufstiegschancen usw. sind in der sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Forschung vielfach beleuchtet worden. It discusses caste, specifically the identity of integration for Dalit migrants and the social work profession to integrate a marginalized community. Der Band leistet eine theoretisch fundierte und praxisnahe Perspektivierung sozio-technischer Transformationsprozesse im Bereich Sozialer Arbeit. Dabei stehen die Inklusionspotentiale sowie die Exklusionsdynamiken im Fokus, die sich aus den sozio-technischen Transformationsprozessen ergeben. The anthology presents the social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of work and gainful employment from a multidisciplinary perspective of social and economic sciences. Specifically, it deals with the analysis of changes in work processes and relations in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Different facets of the discussion are taken up, and the topic of'work, precarity and COVID-19'is discussed along a wide range of diversity categories (age, gender, disability, social origin, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their intersections (intersectionality). At the same time, the focus is on discussing alternative models and ways of dealing with the current crisis that (re)establish social justice and inclusion through work.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. „Exkludierende Solidarität der Rechten“ erkundet das Potential des Konzepts der „exkludierenden Solidarität'als theoretischen Ansatz zur Analyse von politischen Programmatiken, sozialen Welt- und Wertvorstellungen sowie medialen Diskursen im Kontext rechter Parteien und Bewegungen. Welche Formen nimmt Solidarität im Rechtspopulismus an? Wie findet sie gesellschaftliche Resonanz? Und wer wird einbezogen bzw. ausgeschlossen? Neben theoretisch-begrifflichen Erörterungen des Konzeptes diskutieren die empirischen Beiträge sowohl aktuelle sozialpolitische Strategien als auch mediale Erscheinungsformen exkludierender Solidarität und beleuchten die Affekte, die hinter den Erfolgen rechter Gruppierungen stehen.

Der Open Access-Band arbeitet das Themenfeld Polizei und Rassismus umfassendauf. In 33 Beiträgen werden behandelt:• Grundlagen zum Phänomen Rassismus,• relevante Befunde zur Polizei als Organisation und zu ihrer Praxis,• Entstehungszusammenhänge und Folgen von Rassismus in der Polizei,• Methoden der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung und• Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Umgangs mit dem Problem.Angestoßen durch die Geschehnisse und Diskussionen in den USA beschäftigt Rassismus als mit der Polizei assoziiertes Problem auch hierzulande die öffentliche Debatte äußerst intensiv. Dabei wird offenbar, dass die Organisation Polizei in der diversen Gesellschaft vor besonderen Problemen und Herausforderungen steht, denen sie bislang nur in Ansätzen begegnet und wenig gewachsen zu sein scheint. Zugleich fehlt es im deutschen Kontext bisher an einem hinreichend breiten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisstand zu Rassismusin der Polizei. Vor diesem Hintergrund bietet der Band eine Grundlage für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, indem er den Forschungsstand aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammenführt und systematisch aufarbeitet. Die Beiträge können als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Forschung dienen, sollen aber auch eine Übersetzung der Befunde der Rassismusforschung in Richtung Polizei leisten.

Diese Publikation untersucht „Transformationsprozesse am Fluchtort Stadt“, die sich vor und nach der verstärkten Fluchtzuwanderung im Untersuchungsraum Hamburg der Jahre 2015/2016 nachweisen lassen. Kenntnisleitend war dabei die Frage, inwiefern Flucht und Zuwanderung von Geflüchteten nicht mehr nur als vorübergehende und kurzfristige Phänomene betrachtet und als Reaktion auf einen „Ausnahmezustand“ gedacht werden, sondern auch auf institutionellen/strukturellen Ebenen Transformationen auslösen und deshalb in regulärer Stadtpolitik und Stadtentwicklung zu berücksichtigen sind.Der theoretische Zugang erfolgte entsprechend der interdisziplinären Ausrichtung des Projekts mit einer wechselseitigen Bezugnahme auf bildungstheoretische, stadtsoziologische und migrationstheoretische Überlegungen. Empirisch wurden zunächst Transformationsprozesse administrativer und institutioneller Strukturen und deren Spuren in den Lebenslagen Geflüchteter in den Blick genommen. Abschließend erfolgt eine kontrastierende Diskussion der Hamburger Befunde zu den vielfach bundesweit als vorbildlich beurteilten kommunalen Strategien und Praktiken des Umgangs mit Flucht•Migration in Schwäbisch Gmünd sowie eine Reflexion ethischer Fragen in der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Flucht•Migration.

In diesem Buch wird der aktuelle Zustand der österreichischen Sozialpartnerschaft und ihrer Kontextbedingungen aus verschiedenen disziplinären Perspektiven (Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft,Rechtswissenschaft und Wirtschaftswissenschaft) in ausgewählten Bereichen beschrieben und diskutiert. Im Fokus stehen die Antworten sozialpartnerschaftlicher Akteure auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche, politische, rechtliche und wirtschaftliche Herausforderungen, wie etwa Digitalisierung, Transnationalisierung von Wertschöpfungsketten, ökologische Transformation, neue Formen der Beschäftigung, Arbeitsmigration und die Neuordnung der politischen Kräfteverhältnisse.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines expandierenden Privatschulsektors einerseits und der Konzeption der für allen gemeinsamen Grundschule andererseits untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit, ob private Grundschulen in Deutschland Bildungsungleichheiten verstärken. Betrachtet werden einerseits die Selektivität der Privatschulwahl und andererseits die Effekte, welche der Besuch einer privaten Grundschule auf die Kompetenzentwicklung hat. Beide Aspekte werden auf Basis von Daten des Nationalen Bildungspanels untersucht. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass die Wahl einer privaten Grundschule insbesondere in städtischen Gebieten und in Ostdeutschland vom Bildungsniveau und vom kulturellen Kapital der Eltern abhängt. Wird die soziale Selektivität der Privatschulwahl berücksichtigt, zeigt sich kein Effekt privater Beschulung auf die Entwicklung von Lese- und Mathematikkompetenzen.

Der Band präsentiert aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse des Zentrums für Rechtsextremismusforschung, Demokratiebildung und gesellschaftliche Integration (KomRex) der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Im ersten Teil werden neben Analysen zum Thema Rechtsextremismus und Radikalisierung aktuelle Befunde der politischen Einstellungsforschung vorgestellt, die u. a. auf Daten des jährlich durchgeführten Thüringen-Monitors basieren. Der zweite Teil fragt nach Grundlagen für eine zeitgemäße Demokratiepädagogik und Extremismusprävention sowie nach den Voraussetzungen für eine erfolgreiche Integration von Migrant•innen.

Saatgut steht im Zentrum eines Transformationsprozesses, der weltweit mehr als zwei Milliarden Menschen betrifft. In dieser Studie über Kleinbäuerinnen und Kleinbauern in Tansania wird untersucht, wie lokale Saatgutsysteme in den soziokulturellen Strukturen kleinbäuerlicher Lebenswelten verankert sind. Am Beispiel des Saatguts wird damit die enge Verwobenheit landwirtschaftlicher und sozialer Praxis nachgezeichnet und es wird herausgearbeitet, wie einzelne von außen herangetragene Modernisierungsprozesse weitreichende Konsequenzen für das kleinbäuerliche Zusammenleben nach sich ziehen. Die Studie liefert eine konkrete, detaillierte und differenzierende Darstellung des bäuerlichen Alltags sowie über den Umgang der kleinbäuerlichen Haushalte mit Saatgut. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den Saatgutaustauschbeziehungen und wie diese in der Untersuchungsregion sowohl soziale Sicherheit als auch gesellschaftliche Kohäsion stiften. Die Studie basiert auf umfangreicher Feldforschung und intensiven Gesprächen mit Bäuerinnen und Bauern, die in der Arbeit auch selbst zu Wort kommen.

It is often claimed that the disjunction or opposition between ‘action'theories and ‘structural'theories rests on a misunderstanding of what social structure is. A clear understanding of social structure dissolves this apparent opposition. It is argued that social structure is a real social fact but has no separate and substantive existence apart from the minds and actions of the individual and collective actors who produce and reproduce it. It is argued that it is possible to distinguish between ‘figurational structures'of interaction and the deeper ‘formational structures'. Social interaction occurs within specific social worlds to form an extensive interaction order. The pattern of interactions comprises a figurational structure that can be mapped and explored through the methods of social network analysis. A figurational structure can be partitioned into the deeper, emergent levels of a formational structure that comprises class relations, divisions of gender and ethnicity, and a range of other divisions. This book examines the use of the sociological imagination to identify and explore formational structures and suggests the formal, analytical methods that can support these explorations. The two levels of structure are seen as the spheres of microsociology and macrosociology, respectively. These levels can be theorised in terms of processes of social integration and system integration. The use of the ideas presented in the book is illustrated through a brief case study of class relations in French political history from the Revolution to the Third Republic.

This open access book addresses the important and neglected question of older workers who are excluded from the labour market. It challenges post-capitalist discourses of active ageing with a focus on restrictive end-of-career and retirement measures. The book demonstrates how a paradigm shift is generating real processes of exclusion for important sectors of the population. By providing strong empirical evidence from different contexts, the impact of different life course trajectories on the risks and the opportunities at the end of career are demonstrated. The organisation of workplace and institutional frameworks which reinforce inequalities are also presented. As such the book is an essential reading for students, academics and policy makers who seek to understand how exclusion processes operate to the disadvantage of older workers in the labour market.

Datengrundlage des Sammelbandes, dessen Beiträge frei zum Download zur Verfügung stehen, sind mehrere Umfrageprojekte, die teils in mehreren Erhebungswellen über die Krisenzeit durchgeführt haben. Die Beiträge im Buch fokussieren primär auf die Zeit des ersten Lockdowns in Österreich und diskutieren – basierend auf den empirischen Befunden – die Folgen der Corona-Krise auf verschiedene Bereiche des Lebens.

This book addresses the manifold crisis of current societies and understands it as a failure of normative social structuration. As an exemplar for this development, it analyses the decline of welfare state models and the corresponding societal compromise. Yet, it evaluates them as a symptom of a wider malaise of normative orders in complex societies. The question thus arises as to how social science can study the ongoing societal transformation. The book frames the phenomenon as ‘normative intermittency'to capture its fluid alternation of social structuration and destructuration and develops its analysis in three steps: first, it draws a theoretically reflected symptomatic of its occurrences; it then establishes the sociological diagnosis necessary to understand its unfolding and finally evaluates its political outcomes. Methodologically, the book advocates a complete overhaul of the analytical frames of sociology to gauge the intermittent rhythm of the ongoing societal transformation. Thus, it develops an innovative reading of classical sociological theory beyond a number of unreflected axiomatic assumptions of the current sociological mainstream. Thanks to the assessment of the political outcomes of failing social structuration the book turns to a discussion of the development of possible emancipation paths in the form of ‘transformative social action'; reflexively, this accounts for the results of the sociological diagnosis of the crisis of normative social orders. The main analyses within the book scrutinise a number of empirical phenomena that establish normative intermittency in current societies and refer to the major debates that are taking place on the related topics in the state of art of sociological and political theory.

Few concepts are as central to sociology as institutions. Yet, like so many sociological concepts, institutions remain vaguely defined. This book expands a foundational definition of the institution, one which locates them as the basic building blocks of human societies—as structural and cultural machines for survival that make it possible to pass precious knowledge from one generation to the next, ensuring the survival of our species. The book extends this classic tradition by, first, applying advances in biological evolution, neuroscience, and primatology to explain the origins of human societies and, in particular, the first institutional sphere: kinship. The authors incorporate insights from natural sciences often marginalized in sociology, while highlighting the limitations of purely biogenetic, Darwinian explanations. Secondly, they build a vivid conceptual model of institutions and their central dynamics as the book charts the chronological evolution of kinship, polity, religion, law, and economy, discussing the biological evidence for the ubiquity of these institutions as evolutionary adaptations themselves.

This open access book is a collection of articles based on presentations from the 2020 Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos conference that gives an overview of conference outcomes. The vision of the conference has been to unite researchers, scientists, physicians and other healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and students from across the world to discuss research advancements, identify gaps, and develop actionable goals to translate basic research findings into clinical best practices, effective community interventions, and professional training programs to decrease cancer risks and eliminate cancer disparities for Latinos. This book looks at the background to the policy of free movement in Europe and discusses the consequences. European integration changed migration conditions considerably: Under the concept of'freedom of movement', border crossings between EU member states as well as work and settlement by nationals of other member states were largely facilitated; internal borders thus lost their significance. At the same time, the question of how to deal with a common external border and the migration of'third-country nationals'gained in importance. The essential explains why migration from outside Europe was increasingly understood as a problem of security policy and why this still determines the measures for designing a common external border today.

Die Publikation präsentiert Ergebnisse eines transdisziplinären BMBF-Forschungsprojektes zur Integration besonders benachteiligter Gruppen in städtische Wohnungsmärkte und Quartiere und ergänzt diese mit Befunden zu Diskriminierung von Zuwanderer•innen sowie zu Strategien und Instrumenten aktueller Integrationspolitik und -praxis in verschiedenen deutschen Städten.

This book examines the history of racial classifications in Puerto Rico censuses, starting with the Spanish censuses and continuing through the US ones. Because Puerto Rican censuses were collected regularly over hundreds of years, they are fascinating “test cases” to see what census categories might have been available and effective in shaping everyday ones. Published twentieth-century censuses have been well studied, but this book also examines unpublished documents in previous centuries to understand the historical precursors of contemporary ones. State-centered theories hypothesize that censuses, especially colonial ones, have powerful transformative effects. In contrast, this book shows that such transformations are affected by the power and interests of social actors, not the strength of the state. Thus, despite hundreds of years of exposure to the official dichotomous and trichotomous census categories, these categories never replaced the continuous everyday ones because thecensus categories rarely coincided with Puerto Rican's interests.

In Europa schrumpft die Mittelschicht, was für eine Reihe von EU-Mitgliedsländern bislang kaum untersucht wurde. Dies trifft auch auf Österreich zu, welches sich durch Umbau der Sozialpolitik, Flexibilisierung des Arbeitsmarktes, Zuwanderung und einem Aufstieg rechter politischer Parteien in einem starken Umbruchprozess befindet. Dies ist der Hintergrund für eine in diesem Sammelband erstmalig vorgenommene Analyse des Schrumpfens der österreichischen Mittelschicht. Der Band ist multidisziplinär angelegt (Autor•innen aus Soziologie, Ökonomie, Politikwissenschaft, Zeitgeschichte), und versammelt theoretisch orientierte und empirische Beiträge etablierter Autor•innen wie auch Nachwuchswissenschaftler•innen.

Das vorliegende Buch erklärt mithilfe des Konzepts der emotionalen Qualität einer Politikidee, weshalb die deutsche Bevölkerung die Rente mit 67 stärker ablehnte als andere, ebenso einschneidende Rentenreformen. Dafür werden zunächst die Geschichte des Reformvorhabens (der Politikidee) rekonstruiert, die Umstände der Verabschiedung des Reformgesetzes analysiert und dessen Abstraktionsgrad bestimmt. Den Mittelpunkt des Arguments bildet die diskurslinguistische Mehr-Ebenen-Analyse der Topoi in den Rechtfertigungen der Regierung für ihr Reformhandeln. Der Autor kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die von Politik und Bevölkerung in Deutschland althergebrachte Ablehnung des späteren Ruhestands nicht mehr kurzfristig durch eine Post-Entscheidungskommunikation der Regierung aufzubrechen war.

The HIV epidemic remains one of the most challenging of modern times, despite the enormous promise of anti-retroviral treatment. This open access book investigates the link between income inequality and socio-economic residential segregation in 24 large urban regions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. It offers a unique global overview of segregation trends based on case studies by local author teams. The book shows important global trends in segregation, and proposes a Global Segregation Thesis.Rising inequalities lead to rising levels of socio-economic segregation almost everywhere in the world. Levels of inequality and segregation are higher in cities in lower income countries, but the growth in inequality and segregation is faster in cities in high-income countries. This is causing convergence of segregation trends. Professionalisation of the workforce is leading to changing residential patterns. High-income workers are moving to city centres or to attractive coastal areas and gated communities, while poverty is increasingly suburbanising. As a result,the urban geography of inequality changes faster and is more pronounced than changes in segregation levels. Rising levels of inequality and segregation pose huge challenges for the future social sustainability of cities, as cities are no longer places of opportunities for all.

In this third iteration of the classic work The Impacts of Racism on White Americans (1981, 1996), a new generation of scholars make the case that racism often negatively affects Whites themselves, especially during the Trump era. In 1981, Impacts introduced an alternative understanding of racism, arguing that it went beyond white-black and/or inter-race relations. Instead, the book proposed that the problem of race in the U.S. is fundamentally one of white identity and culture and that racism has substantial negative effects on White Americans. This volume advances these propositions through three key areas: (1) Trump-era cultural and institutional racism, bolstered by the use of historical notions of racial hierarchy; (2) institutional and interpersonal racism, which in turn drive individual racist behaviors; and finally, (3) racism's interactional sequences and how they impact anti-racism efforts. As each chapter author explores an iteration of these racisms, they also explore how racist attitudes produce disadvantage among White Americans.
