Professor Margaret Archer is a leading critical realist and major contemporary social theorist. This edited collection seeks to celebrate the scope and accomplishments of her work, distilling her theoretical and empirical contributions into four sections which capture the essence and trajectory of her research over almost four decades. Long fascinated with the problem of structure and agency, Archer's work has constituted a decade-long engagement with this perennial issue of social thought. However, in spite of the deep interconnections that unify her body of work, it is rarely treated as a coherent whole. This is doubtless in part due to the unforgiving rigour of her arguments and prose, but also a byproduct of sociology's ongoing compartmentalisation. This edited collection seeks to address this relative neglect by collating a selection of papers, spanning Archer's career, which collectively elucidate both the development of her thought and the value that can be found in it as a systematic whole. This book illustrates the empirical origins of her social ontology in her early work on the sociology of education, as well as foregrounding the diverse range of influences that have conditioned her intellectual trajectory: the systems theory of Walter Buckley, the neo-Weberian analysis of Lockwood, the critical realist philosophy of Roy Bhaskar and, more recently, her engagement with American pragmatism and the Italian school of relational sociology. What emerges is a series of important contributions to our understanding of the relationship between structure, culture and agency. Acting to introduce and guide readers through these contributions, this book carries the potential to inform exciting and innovative sociological research.

This book explores the possibility of alienation amongst the British working-class and argues that the class is, in fact, alienated. Its point of departure is the right-communitarians, who outline how the working class has become alienated as a result of a loss of its political agency, the breakdown of its communities, and the undermining of its dignity. However, where these scholars tend to propose solutions from a right-communitarian perspective, this book adopts a more inclusive, left-wing, position to address working-class concerns.

The contributors to this volume take up the theme of instructed and instructive actions. Harold Garfinkel, the founder of ethnomethodology, initiated the study of instructed actions as a way to elucidate the embodied production of social order in real time. Studies of instructions and the actions of following them provide empirical content to the classical theoretical issue of how rules, norms, and other normative guidelines are conveyed, understood, and used for producing social actions and structures.The studies in this volume address novel technologies of instructed action and non-obvious ways in which ordinary actions turn out to be instructive for participants in immediate situations of action and interaction. In some cases, the studies address specialized practical, artistic, and recreational activities, and in others they address commonplace modes of action and interaction. In all cases, they focus on how the manifest organization of specific activities is organized with and without explicitly formulated instructions.This book will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in ethnomethodological approaches to research by contributing to understandings of how specific actions are instructed and instructive in the circumstances in which they are produced.

This open access book constitutes a transnational and multidisciplinary inquiry of the most pressing challenges faced by young people Not in Employment, nor in Education or Training (NEET) in rural areas across Europe.. Rural NEETs are one of the most invisible segments of the youth population, in spite of the fact that the percentage of NEETs is higher in the countryside, compared to those in suburban and urban areas across the EU and many of the Southern and Eastern European countries. This book identifies and analyses different factors that may contribute to or hamper youth social development and social inclusion. Among them are main individual features of rural NEETs, the quality and characteristics of rural NEETs'informal social networks and support, the singularities of formal and non-formal education in rural areas and how they shape the transition from school to work, the role of employment services in providing adequate institutional support, the importance of policy package designor the role of new paradigms of rural development to uphold vulnerable young people in the European countryside. The contributions offered in this book provide a new model of analysis and comprehension of rural NEETs'personal development and social inclusion. This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the'post-industrial'societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality.

This book uses Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson's The Established and The Outsiders to map selected established-outsiders figurations in Poland after 1989. Looking at gender and sexual orientation, nationalism and patriotism, race and class, antifeminism and homophobia, elitist and populist imaginaries, religious and political ideals and ideologies, hate speech, and the crisis of the rule of law, this book tracks how inequalities are transformed into figurations of the have and the have-nots by way of spatial, symbolic and institutional exclusion. This edited collection is rooted in a socio-historical understanding of the trajectory of Polish society before and since the fall of Communism over thirty years ago, and a critical assessment of the dramatic turn that Polish society has taken since the beginning of the democratic backsliding in 2015.

Räumliche Ungleichheiten innerhalb von Staaten haben jüngst an Bedeutung gewonnen, wie die geografische Verteilung von Wahlergebnissen in vielen Ländern zeigt. Das Buch analysiert die Rolle von Indikatoren sowohl für die Messung von räumlichen Disparitäten als auch für die Steuerung kompensatorischer Interventionen des Staates. Indikatoren vermessen Raum typischerweise in einem territorialen Schema, was nicht unbedingt den durch Praktiken konstituierten Räumen entspricht. Der Band untersucht die Territorialpolitik staatlicher Akteure in den Politikfeldern Kommunalfinanzen, Bildungsinfrastruktur, Regionalförderung und Asylverwaltung primär am Beispiel Deutschlands. Er zeigt, dass Indikatoren nur in einigen dieser Politikfelder eine Schlüsselstellung erreicht haben.

In den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten sind die Anteile befristeter Beschäftigungsverhältnisse bei jungen Erwachsenen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in anderen spätkapitalistischen Gesellschaften deutlich angestiegen. Eingebettet in fortdauernde Trends einer Verringerung wohlfahrtsstaatlicher Sicherungsstandards hat diese Entwicklung dazu beigetragen, dass sich Übergänge in stabile berufliche Karrieren und planbare private Zukunftsgestaltungen diversifizieren und verzögern. In der vorliegenden Studie wird eine soziologische Erklärung der Auswirkungen befristeter Beschäftigung auf private und partnerschaftliche Zukunftsgestaltungen von jungen Erwachsenen theoriegeleitet ausgearbeitet und empirisch überprüft. Da mit der Ausweitung befristeter Beschäftigung das klassische männliche Ernährermodell in Begründungsnot gerät, so die zentrale These, werden Neuaushandlungen von Geschlechterrollenarrangements in jungen Partnerschaften erforderlich. Nicht allein sozioökonomische Risiken imKontext befristeter Beschäftigung, auch die sich wandelnden geschlechter- und erwerbsbezogenen Rollenerwartungen wirken sich verzögernd auf private und partnerschaftliche Zukunftsgestaltungen aus.Die Studie richtet sich an Forschende, Lehrende und Studierende der Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft, Psychologie und in benachbarten sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Das Buch stellt eine empirische Analyse der subjektiven Bedeutung von Armut und sozialer Aus-grenzung innerhalb eines gewandelten sozialstaatlichen Arrangements dar. Es zeigt auf, dass von Armut betroffene Menschen ständig damit konfrontiert sind, dass sie von ihren eigenen Idealen, Wünschen und Überzeugungen abweichen und diese nicht realisieren können. Zugleich wird gezeigt, dass die Entstehung und Etablierung von Hilfsangeboten der ‚Tafel‘ auf die Existenz von Armut innerhalb der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft verweist und ein Symbol der Transformation des Sozialstaats darstellt. Während die Nutzer•innen der ‚Tafeln‘ auf die Hilfen angewiesen sind, versetzen diese sie zugleich jedoch nicht in der Lage, die Armutssituation zu überwinden.

Seit 2018 gibt es das Grundlagenwerk „Praxis der Sinus-Milieus® - eine autoritative Darstellung des Milieuansatzes von SINUS und dessen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten, also eine Publikation, die die Gültigkeit der Sinus-Milieus im Kontext der soziokulturellen Dynamik begründet, ihre Aktualität in Zeiten von Digitalisierung und Globalisierung untermauert und ihren Nutzwert für Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft wie für den institutionellen Bereich deutlich macht.Diese Grundsatzveröffentlichung ist jetzt komplett überarbeitet, aktualisiert und ergänzt worden. This open access book critically examines discussions on digitalisation and individual opportunities for socio-economic advancement. Contrary to the prevailing narratives of “digital empowerment” and opportunities for every individual, this book argues that digitalisation massively curtails social advancement opportunities, consolidating existing social relations. From a spatial perspective, Scheffer demonstrates how socially disadvantaged groups are faced with reproducing mechanisms as part of a new data economy. Surprisingly, the more intensively digital services are used, the more this happens.Building on Löw´s sociology of space and Bourdieu´s concept of habitus, this book shows how practices of social exclusion are transferred to the digital present in an innovative way. Auf der Grundlage von Theorien zu sozialen bzw. relationalen Räumen, die der bloßen Vorstellung von Raum als feste Größe, als Container, in dem sozialen Prozesse lediglich verortet werden, den Rücken kehren, soll in den Beiträgen des Bandes nach den räumlichen Praxen, den Wissensbeständen und Diskursen über Räume und damit nach den Konstitutionen von Raum gefragt werden, die in der Stadt wirksam werden und städtische Inklusions- sowie Exklusionsmechanismen produzieren.

Since its existence in the 1950s, consumer policy in Germany has been understood and pursued primarily as a bundle of actions and measures initiated and institutionalised by the state. In many cases, the state has also issued corresponding mandates and set up support models, which has created the impression that we are basically dealing with a'consumer policy from above'imposed by macro-politics. Not that there have not been repeated attempts in the past decades to give impetus to consumer policy from the middle of civil society - often in the form of small citizens'initiatives. And in recent years in particular, a number of new consumer organisations have emerged which operate much closer to the grass roots. Nevertheless, the impression seems to have taken root among the large, government-related'players'in the field, who have been in the'business'for decades, not to mention government-internal consumer policy, that consumer policy concerns a policy field that is essentiallyordered by a collaboration of the state on the one hand, and consumer protection organisations representing all consumers equally on the other, while the many small consumer initiatives, not even started by individual committed consumers, regularly fall behind in comparison. This perspective refers largely to the view of and from the centre of politics. This volume is intended to go some way towards countering the institutionally prevailing impression that, in principle, there is only'consumer policy from above'that is really effective and assertive.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. This book explores the idea that alternatives to our present condition are available in the present, such that a search for alternatives must involve rigorous study of some of its central texts, events, and thinkers. Through engagement with selected modern thinkers, texts, and events, it imagines a different future from the position of the current postcolonial moment, indicating the possibilities that emerge from the present and which shape contemporary radical thinking. This book applies the general theory of critical rationalism in order to develop a new sociology of the open society, in general, and a new analysis of the transition from a closed society to an open society in particular. It presents a criticism of Karl Popper's analysis of human action for opening up a closed society, followed by a critical study of the mainstream sociology to show how justificational models of knowledge and rational action have prevented sociology from addressing the contribution of human action to social change.This book provides new sociologies of closed and open societies. It argues that in the closed society'a low level'of critical rationality is activated by people to define the meaning of the good life and social institutions of law, polity and economy. The anthology presents the social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of work and gainful employment from a multidisciplinary perspective of social and economic sciences. Specifically, it deals with the analysis of changes in work processes and relations in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Different facets of the discussion are taken up, and the topic of'work, precarity and COVID-19'is discussed along a wide range of diversity categories (age, gender, disability, social origin, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their intersections (intersectionality). At the same time, the focus is on discussing alternative models and ways of dealing with the current crisis that (re)establish social justice and inclusion through work.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. This open access book is a collection of articles based on presentations from the 2020 Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos conference that gives an overview of conference outcomes. This book addresses the manifold crisis of current societies and understands it as a failure of normative social structuration. As an exemplar for this development, it analyses the decline of welfare state models and the corresponding societal compromise. Yet, it evaluates them as a symptom of a wider malaise of normative orders in complex societies. The question thus arises as to how social science can study the ongoing societal transformation. The book frames the phenomenon as ‘normative intermittency'to capture its fluid alternation of social structuration and destructuration and develops its analysis in three steps: first, it draws a theoretically reflected symptomatic of its occurrences; it then establishes the sociological diagnosis necessary to understand its unfolding and finally evaluates its political outcomes. Methodologically, the book advocates a complete overhaul of the analytical frames of sociology to gauge the intermittent rhythm of the ongoing societal transformation. Thus, it develops an innovative reading of classical sociological theory beyond a number of unreflected axiomatic assumptions of the current sociological mainstream. Thanks to the assessment of the political outcomes of failing social structuration the book turns to a discussion of the development of possible emancipation paths in the form of ‘transformative social action'; reflexively, this accounts for the results of the sociological diagnosis of the crisis of normative social orders. The main analyses within the book scrutinise a number of empirical phenomena that establish normative intermittency in current societies and refer to the major debates that are taking place on the related topics in the state of art of sociological and political theory.

Der Sammelband stellt aus multidisziplinärer Perspektive der Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften gesellschaftliche Folgen der COVID-19 Pandemie im Bereich Arbeit und Erwerbsarbeit dar. Konkret geht es um die Analyse der Veränderung von Arbeitsprozessen und -verhältnissen im Zuge der COVID-19 Pandemie. Es werden unterschiedliche Facetten der Diskussion aufgegriffen, und entlang verschiedenster Diversitätskategorien (Alter, Geschlecht, Behinderung, soziale Herkunft, Ethnie, Religion etc.) und ihren Überschneidungen (Intersektionalität) wird das Thema'Arbeit, Prekariat und COVID-19'diskutiert. Gleichzeitig liegt der Fokus darauf, alternative Modelle und Wege im Umgang mit der aktuellen Krise zu diskutieren, die soziale Gerechtigkeit und Inklusion durch Arbeit (wieder)herstellen.

Few concepts are as central to sociology as institutions. Yet, like so many sociological concepts, institutions remain vaguely defined. This book expands a foundational definition of the institution, one which locates them as the basic building blocks of human societies—as structural and cultural machines for survival that make it possible to pass precious knowledge from one generation to the next, ensuring the survival of our species. The book extends this classic tradition by, first, applying advances in biological evolution, neuroscience, and primatology to explain the origins of human societies and, in particular, the first institutional sphere: kinship. The authors incorporate insights from natural sciences often marginalized in sociology, while highlighting the limitations of purely biogenetic, Darwinian explanations. Secondly, they build a vivid conceptual model of institutions and their central dynamics as the book charts the chronological evolution of kinship, polity, religion, law, and economy, discussing the biological evidence for the ubiquity of these institutions as evolutionary adaptations themselves.

Datengrundlage des Sammelbandes, dessen Beiträge frei zum Download zur Verfügung stehen, sind mehrere Umfrageprojekte, die teils in mehreren Erhebungswellen über die Krisenzeit durchgeführt haben. Die Beiträge im Buch fokussieren primär auf die Zeit des ersten Lockdowns in Österreich und diskutieren – basierend auf den empirischen Befunden – die Folgen der Corona-Krise auf verschiedene Bereiche des Lebens.

Saatgut steht im Zentrum eines Transformationsprozesses, der weltweit mehr als zwei Milliarden Menschen betrifft. In dieser Studie über Kleinbäuerinnen und Kleinbauern in Tansania wird untersucht, wie lokale Saatgutsysteme in den soziokulturellen Strukturen kleinbäuerlicher Lebenswelten verankert sind. Am Beispiel des Saatguts wird damit die enge Verwobenheit landwirtschaftlicher und sozialer Praxis nachgezeichnet und es wird herausgearbeitet, wie einzelne von außen herangetragene Modernisierungsprozesse weitreichende Konsequenzen für das kleinbäuerliche Zusammenleben nach sich ziehen. Die Studie liefert eine konkrete, detaillierte und differenzierende Darstellung des bäuerlichen Alltags sowie über den Umgang der kleinbäuerlichen Haushalte mit Saatgut. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den Saatgutaustauschbeziehungen und wie diese in der Untersuchungsregion sowohl soziale Sicherheit als auch gesellschaftliche Kohäsion stiften. Die Studie basiert auf umfangreicher Feldforschung und intensiven Gesprächen mit Bäuerinnen und Bauern, die in der Arbeit auch selbst zu Wort kommen.

Diese Publikation untersucht „Transformationsprozesse am Fluchtort Stadt“, die sich vor und nach der verstärkten Fluchtzuwanderung im Untersuchungsraum Hamburg der Jahre 2015/2016 nachweisen lassen. Kenntnisleitend war dabei die Frage, inwiefern Flucht und Zuwanderung von Geflüchteten nicht mehr nur als vorübergehende und kurzfristige Phänomene betrachtet und als Reaktion auf einen „Ausnahmezustand“ gedacht werden, sondern auch auf institutionellen/strukturellen Ebenen Transformationen auslösen und deshalb in regulärer Stadtpolitik und Stadtentwicklung zu berücksichtigen sind.Der theoretische Zugang erfolgte entsprechend der interdisziplinären Ausrichtung des Projekts mit einer wechselseitigen Bezugnahme auf bildungstheoretische, stadtsoziologische und migrationstheoretische Überlegungen. Empirisch wurden zunächst Transformationsprozesse administrativer und institutioneller Strukturen und deren Spuren in den Lebenslagen Geflüchteter in den Blick genommen. Abschließend erfolgt eine kontrastierende Diskussion der Hamburger Befunde zu den vielfach bundesweit als vorbildlich beurteilten kommunalen Strategien und Praktiken des Umgangs mit Flucht•Migration in Schwäbisch Gmünd sowie eine Reflexion ethischer Fragen in der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Flucht•Migration.

This book looks at the background to the policy of free movement in Europe and discusses the consequences. European integration changed migration conditions considerably: Under the concept of'freedom of movement', border crossings between EU member states as well as work and settlement by nationals of other member states were largely facilitated; internal borders thus lost their significance. At the same time, the question of how to deal with a common external border and the migration of'third-country nationals'gained in importance. The essential explains why migration from outside Europe was increasingly understood as a problem of security policy and why this still determines the measures for designing a common external border today.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines expandierenden Privatschulsektors einerseits und der Konzeption der für allen gemeinsamen Grundschule andererseits untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit, ob private Grundschulen in Deutschland Bildungsungleichheiten verstärken. Betrachtet werden einerseits die Selektivität der Privatschulwahl und andererseits die Effekte, welche der Besuch einer privaten Grundschule auf die Kompetenzentwicklung hat. Beide Aspekte werden auf Basis von Daten des Nationalen Bildungspanels untersucht. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass die Wahl einer privaten Grundschule insbesondere in städtischen Gebieten und in Ostdeutschland vom Bildungsniveau und vom kulturellen Kapital der Eltern abhängt. Wird die soziale Selektivität der Privatschulwahl berücksichtigt, zeigt sich kein Effekt privater Beschulung auf die Entwicklung von Lese- und Mathematikkompetenzen.

It is often claimed that the disjunction or opposition between ‘action'theories and ‘structural'theories rests on a misunderstanding of what social structure is. A clear understanding of social structure dissolves this apparent opposition. It is argued that social structure is a real social fact but has no separate and substantive existence apart from the minds and actions of the individual and collective actors who produce and reproduce it. It is argued that it is possible to distinguish between ‘figurational structures'of interaction and the deeper ‘formational structures'. Social interaction occurs within specific social worlds to form an extensive interaction order. The pattern of interactions comprises a figurational structure that can be mapped and explored through the methods of social network analysis. A figurational structure can be partitioned into the deeper, emergent levels of a formational structure that comprises class relations, divisions of gender and ethnicity, and a range of other divisions. This book examines the use of the sociological imagination to identify and explore formational structures and suggests the formal, analytical methods that can support these explorations. The two levels of structure are seen as the spheres of microsociology and macrosociology, respectively. These levels can be theorised in terms of processes of social integration and system integration. The use of the ideas presented in the book is illustrated through a brief case study of class relations in French political history from the Revolution to the Third Republic.

Soziale Ungleichheiten sind eine zentrale Herausforderung für die europäische Integration. Die zahlreichen räumlichen und sozialen Spaltungslinien in Europa gefährden nicht nur den nationalen, sondern auch den europäischen Zusammenhalt. Die Ursachen für Benachteiligungen, Armut und Ausgrenzung werden von den Bürgern auch auf europäischer Ebene verortet. Auf Grundlage aktueller Daten über das Leben und Arbeiten in Europa werden in dem Buch die nationalen und transnationalen Muster sozialer Ungleichheiten analysiert und damit ein besseres Verständnis der Europäisierung gesellschaftlicher Konflikte ermöglicht.

This book explores the thought of Pierre Bourdieu, one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century, proposing a modification and extension of his concept of habitus. Building on Bourdieu's notion of the translational reproduction of social structure – the idea that while social classes move in the same direction, dominant groups are able to preserve their relative power position, thus maintaining the structure of the gap – the author proposes that as social structures change, habitus change correspondingly, and thus become plural. Informed by Norbert Elias'process sociology, this volume offers examples of habitus pluralisation, arguing that this modification of Bourdieu's thought renders it more suitable for the study of social changes and represents the development of a path that Bourdieu himself had begun to explore in the later stages of his career. As such it will appeal to scholars of sociology and social theory with interests in historical sociology, process sociology, social structures and the thought of Bourdieu.

Agent-based modeling/simulation is an emergent approach to the analysis of social and economic systems. It provides a bottom-up experimental method to be applied to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. This book includes selected papers presented at the Eighth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2013. At the workshop, 23 reviewed full papers were presented and of those, 13 were selected to be included in this volume.

Und welche Bewältigungsstrategien werden von Bildungsaufsteiger•innen und ihren Eltern im Hinblick auf die Veränderungen und Herausforderungen entwickelt, die durch intergenerationale soziale Mobilität entstehen? Diese Fragen beantwortet die Autorin mit einer biografietheoretischen Mehrgenerationenstudie. Sie rekonstruiert das komplexe Zusammenspiel von gesellschaftlichen Gelingensbedingungen, herkunftsbedingten Orientierungsstrukturen und familialen Beziehungsdynamiken in Familien, in denen die Kinder das Phänomen der sogenannten ‚Bildungsvererbung‘ überwinden. Es zeigt sich, dass sich ein Bildungsaufstieg immer im Spannungsfeld zwischen Loslösung von der Familie und Bindung an das Herkunftsmilieu bewegt und einen Sozialisationsprozess in alternativen sozialen Wirklichkeiten bedeutet.. In dieser Studie werden familiale Figurationen herausgearbeitet, die vor diesem Hintergrund Bildungsressourcen begründen oder auch Umstände, die im Prozess des Bildungsaufstiegs der biografischen oder familialen Bearbeitung bedürfen.

In Europa schrumpft die Mittelschicht, was für eine Reihe von EU-Mitgliedsländern bislang kaum untersucht wurde.
