Animal hoarding disorder (AHD) is classified as a psychiatric obsessive-compulsive condition characterized by animal accumulation and often accompanied by unsanitary conditions and animal cruelty. Although AHD may increase pathogen transmission and spread, particularly for zoonotic diseases, human and dog exposure in such cases has yet to be fully established. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess Brucella canis in 19 individuals with AHD (11 households) and their 264 dogs (21 households) in Curitiba, the eighth largest city in Brazil, with approximately 1.8 million habitants. Anti-B. canis antibodies were detected by the 2-mercaptoethanol microplate agglutination test (2ME-MAT) and by a commercial lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), while molecular detection of previously positive seropositive samples was performed by conventional PCR. Although all the human samples were 2ME-MAT negative, 12/264 (4.5%, 95% Confidence Interval: 2.0–7.0%) dog samples were 2ME-MAT and LFIA positive, with 2ME-MAT titers ranging from 20 to 640. At least one dog in 4/21 (19.0%, 95% CI: 2.0–46.0%) households was seropositive. Despite the absence of seropositivity in individuals with AHD and the comparatively low seroprevalence in dogs, B. canis circulation and outbreaks should be considered in such human populations due to the high burden and recurrent character of B. canis exposure in high-density dog populations and the constant introduction of susceptible animals. Author summary: Individuals with animal hoarding disorder (AHD), a psychiatric obsessive-compulsive disorder, are considered among the most vulnerable people due to their precarious sanitary conditions and exposure to several zoonoses, including canine brucellosis, a neglected and underreported disease of public health concern worldwide. Close and continuous human contact with unhealthy and unassisted dogs may increase pathogen transmission and spread, which is worsened by elderly people's difficulty accessing health services and lack of hoarding control and management programs. The present study assessed B. canis as a silent pathogen in this hard-to-access vulnerable population, along with their dogs. Although all the individuals with AHD included herein were seronegative and their dogs presented relatively low seroprevalence, B. canis infection and outbreaks should always be considered, particularly due to unsanitary household conditions, the high density of dog populations, and the constant introduction of susceptible dogs of unknown origin. Thus, dogs seropositive for B. canis living in households of people with AHD should be considered a warning to local public health authorities. In conclusion, serological and molecular assessments of B. canis in people with AHD and other vulnerable populations may serve as instruments for effective public health policies, including diagnosis, control, monitoring, and prevention. Several smallholder pig farms exist in Brazil in parallel with industrial pig farming, which is carried out on large-scale farms. This study aimed to describe the smallholder pig production systems in the Metropolitan Area of Curitiba. For this, a questionnaire was applied in loco by interviewing 362 farmers. The labor force was exclusively family-oriented (93.4%), 50% of the farms had between 1.1 and 10 acres, 98.3% raised other animal species (i.e., poultry), and in 80.9% of the properties they cultivated mainly corn. Farrow-to-finish operations were developed in 57.2% of the farms, the swine were kept in a confined system in 62.5%, and the swine were kept outdoors in 20.7%. Of the farrow-to-finish operations, 40.1% had between 11 and 20 pigs, while in the fattening farms, 88.4% had up to 5 pigs. Most of the visited properties (79.6%) had pigs with undefined breeds. In terms of feeding practices, corn, and locally available vegetables were the most commonly used. In addition, 38.1% of farmers used commercial concentrate, usually with other feed. Reproduction was exclusively by natural mating, and the most frequently weaning age (46.9%) was two months. All the interviewees raised swine primarily for their consumption, with 78.7% also selling the animals. In the studied region, farmers obtained their family income by combining farming with other activities and stated that pig production contributed little to this income, and was developed mainly as a family tradition. Purpose: The study aims to understand how dynamic capabilities (DCs) contribute to business model innovation (BMI) in sustainable family farming. The agrifood sector has been seeking solutions for the development of agroecological markets. Thus, the authors have analyzed the challenges imposed to innovation and sustainability strategic management and the value proposition to sustain the business over the years. Design/methodology/approach: Considering the complexity of organizations and through an exploratory multiple case study of initiatives identified in the Organic Fair of Curitiba's Passeio Público, it was possible to analyze the evolution of the business models (BMs) and the fair itself. Furthermore, it was possible to identify the DCs within the influence of agroecosystem elements on the innovation development. Findings: Analyzing each case individually, the authors understood the different dimensions of the evolution of BMs considering the organizational complexity. The authors conclude that the balance between organizational practices and changes in the environment, engagement and learning plays a significant role in the developing competitive advantage. The same applies to the patterns that precede the development of DCs and BMs. Originality/value: The article investigates innovation in agroecological BMs from a dynamic capability perspective. The agroecological BM is a subject that is still little discussed in the literature. Several diseases are difficult to control specially in subtropical regions and perennial hosts where the pathogen survive easily within the plant. The aim of this study was to identify which pathogens are surviving after end of one season and at the beginning of the next season to inform which pathogens represent potential risk as primary inoculum to the next season. Survival of pathogens on apple tree twigs was evaluated during dormancy and on beginning of vegetative growth in four orchards located in the two main apple production regions: Palmas and metropolitan region of Curitiba, in Paraná State, Brazil. For this purpose, 10 cm long asymptomatic twigs were collected from 10 randomly selected plants, 24 twigs per plant. Half of the twigs were left directly (without disinfection) in humid chambers for 30 days at 25°C. The other half of the twigs were disinfected and kept in a freezer for 12 hours at -16°C by the Over Night Freezing Incubation Technique (Onfit) and then kept in a humid chamber for 30 days at 25°C. The fungi Colletotrichum sp., Botryosphaeria sp., Alternaria sp., and Fusarium sp. were detected in the two sampled dates and methodologies in all evaluated regions. Neonectria ditissima was only detected in both orchards from Palmas. The genera found surviving on twigs were confirmed molecularly by BLASTn and were pathogenic in wounded fruits from the cultivar 'Gala'. Our results indicate that pathogens are surviving in orchards after winter treatment and throughout the apple season, being potential sources of inoculum for infections in flowers and fruits, where the pathogens detected cause important diseases as bitter rot, Neonectria fruit rot, white and black rots, and possibly cause Alternaria and Fusarium rots which have not been extensively studied in Brazil.
